Choose the right variety(ies) CHARACTERISTICS TO CONSIDER: • Heat level. • Plant growth habit • Culinary type (spice or vegetable type)

2. Chillies need a long growing season so should

• Colour • Earliness • Yield

1.

Sow early be started early in the year. Sow the seeds sometime between January and mid-March. Go for the earlier date for the slower growing habanero (Capsicum chinense) varieties.

Do not 3. prick out too early 4. Provide plenty of light

Seedlings should have at least two true leaves when pricked out. They should be handled with great care, and in particular, the roots and stems must not be damaged.

Light makes plants grow, and chillies need a lot of it. Generally, the more sunshine a chilli plant has, the earlier, bushier and healthier it will be. Low light levels result in thin, spindly plants.

5. Keep the temperature high

Chillies are tropical plants with an uncompromising need for heat at all stages of their life. Artificial heat should be provided for germination and during transplant production; mature plants should be kept indoors in the warmth of a polytunnel, greenhouse or conservatory.

6. 8. Control

Maintain fertility levels

Chillies need high levels of nutrients to produce a good crop.

7.

Water

diligently

Germinating seeds must never be allowed to dry out. Older plants need regular watering, particularly in sunny weather.

9.

aphids

Aphids, also know as greenfly, are the most serious pest of chillies. If your plant gets infested they must be controlled. For details on control see our website.

Provide 10. Harvest support regularly

Tall-growing varieties and those with large fruit need some sort of support to hold them upright and stop the stem and branches from breaking.

The more you harvest, the more fruit the plants will produce. To get the best yields the chillies should be picked off the plants regularly.

Frittata 45 mins A DARING ADVENTURE! serves 4-6

What You Need Need:

How To Make Make:

1. • 6 medium eggs, preferably free-range Recipe2.

• 120g Mexicana, grated • 1 tbsp oil • 2 large onions, peeled and cut into thin slices • 1 red pepper, cored and sliced • 500g potatoes, peeled and cut into large, evenly sized pieces • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cook the potatoes in salted boiling water until tender. Drain. Line a 18cm (7 inch) round cake tin.

3.

Preheat oven to 200°C / 180°C fan / gas mark 6 and place a baking tray on the middle shelf.

4.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and when hot saute the onions and peppers until soft but not coloured; about 5-6 minutes.

5.

Whisk together the eggs season well and set aside.

6.

Slice the cooked potatoes into discs approximately 5mm thick.

7.

Layer the sliced potatoes, onions and pepper and grated Mexicana in the prepared tin; pour over the egg mixture. Press a fork over the surface to ensure the egg mixture is evenly distributed and level.

8.
