DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME
A very warm welcome to the August edition of Dorset Business Focus – and it literally is a very warm welcome with the temperature at a scorching 30c (that’s an incredible 87F in old fashion money); summer has arrived at last. I want to begin by discussing Freedom Day, Monday 19th July, the day I am actually writing this introduction. Freedom Day certainly doesn’t feel like the big mask-tearing off celebration Boris was talking about a few weeks ago. In fact we’ve seen a huge shift in the approach from Government as we see infection rates soar, medical experts publicly challenge the Government on the removal of requirements and retailers and transport providers state they will still be asking people to continue to wear masks. The return to work call has certainly been diluted and businesses are now encouraged to think about bringing staff back to work – as opposed to the big return Boris was originally talking about. The ‘irreversible’ Freedom Day relaxations also do not seem to be irreversible and many businesses we speak to have real concerns as we look to the future. Of course we cannot go on like this forever and we have to open the economy up – but let’s not throw common sense away in the process and we must take a cautious and sensible approach as we do this.
As a member of the Poole BID board, I was over the moon when Poole BID recently got the go-ahead for a further after a successful ballot. I think the BID team are doing a great job and there is definitely a sense of renewed positivity and energy about Poole. This new 5 year term allows the Poole BID Board to agree a long term vision and plan for the BID area, and working closely with BCP Council and other key stakeholders such as Legal and General, there is a tremendous opportunity for Poole to be at the forefront as we see high streets across the UK transition to much broader use. The Poole BID directors recently spent s couple of hours having a walk through the whole BID area, from the Dolphin Centre to the Quay and whilst it is clear there is still much to do to tidy the town up and restore pride in Poole, the commitment and energy is there from the Poole BID team. Until next time Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

MSP Capital support Ugandan Orphanage AFC Bournemouth’s principal partner MSP Capital are sending over 40 shirts to Uganda as part of the special Arnaut Danjuma goals competition. The competition, which went live in April, encouraged supporters from across the globe to replicate Danjuma’s goal of the season contender against Blackburn Rovers. The competition even reached East Africa with the eventual winner coming from a young entrant in Uganda. Kiwa, part of the Ugandan Cherries – an orphanage based in Bugembe, showed some excellent skills finding the top corner in replicating the Supporters’ Player of the Year’s strike. Fans and followers of the MSP Capital Twitter feed were asked to vote on their favourite, with Kiwa winning with a resounding 69.5% of the votes. A signed football shirt and ball from Danjuma himself are on the way over to Kiwa, but MSP wanted to go the extra mile and continue the excellent work happening at the orphanage. The Ugandan Cherries are a community-based orphanage and football academy, inspiring health, fitness and focus with the beautiful game. 4

Formed by Coach Kiizza, girls and boys of all ages are taught and as a die-hard AFC Bournemouth fan, he has helped form an unlikely alliance with the Cherries on the south coast. MSP Capital are further supporting the Ugandan Cherries by donating an extra 40 shirts to clothe the entire team of future players. Martin Higgins, MD at MSP Capital and a life-long Cherries fan, said: “We were blown away by the response to the competition, which initially began as a fun way to add entertainment for AFC Bournemouth fans in lockdown and spread a bit of cheer to our followers. “To see that joy spread even further takes our company mission of elevating access to community sports to the next level. “We’re grateful to AFC Bournemouth for making this happen and excited to work on more initiatives in the future.” www.afcb.co.uk /company/dorset-chamber/

Dorset Chamber members, Vitality have announced that UK businesses will now be able to receive a free, comprehensive - yet easily digestible - report that illustrates the value they can expect from introducing Vitality Health Insurance into their business and engaging employees with the Vitality Programme. The report, which enables businesses to quantify the tangible benefits that the Vitality Programme can provide, will also detail the health and wellbeing initiatives most likely to improve their business alongside information on how their business compares to similar companies in their industry. lifestyle areas such as physical activity, smoking and nutrition, along with its impact on clinical risk factors including: blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and BMI. Improvement in each of these risk factors can be associated with positive impacts on individuals’ health (resulting in higher life expectancy), workplace health-related productivity and job satisfaction. Novo Nordisk, a leading UK pharmaceutical company which drives change to defeat diabetes, obesity, rare blood and endocrine disorders, saw that over a five year period of engaging with the Vitality Programme, the proportion of employees doing less than the recommended amount of physical activity3 improved by 50%; 43% of those not eating their recommended daily portion of fruit and vegetables are now eating at least five portions per day; and in addition, employees also reduced the estimated health-related productivity loss by 11 days per year (after three years). Pippa Andrews, Director of Corporate Business at Vitality said: “We’ve always known
the positive impact that the Vitality Programme has on workforces and businesses alike, but now – through the Return on Investment Calculator – we can show companies its value in real-terms. “The past year has been extraordinary and challenging for all and – with many adapting to new ways of working – never before has it been more important for companies to understand the health and wellbeing of their employees and put in place initiatives to help improve it. “Our research has found that not only does the Vitality Programme benefit individual employees through increased health-related productivity levels, job satisfaction and even employee life expectancy – it also improves a company’s workplace culture and bottom line.” The new tool is available now to businesses on the VitalityHealth business websites and to advisers via the online literature library or directly at www.vitality.co.uk/roi-calculator/ 5

Dorset Chamber Invests in Audio-Visual Conference Room Making Zoom & Microsoft Teams meetings more accessible for Dorset Chamber members. Having recently joined Dorset Chamber, Yury Desiderio – Managing Director of Walcom Integration soon found himself in conversation with Steve Bulley about how they could help add value for the membership. Recognising that the boardroom could have its value increased beyond a simple meeting room. With the current climate being what it is budget was always a consideration, however, Walcom Integration was able to propose a solution that not only met Dorset Chamber’s budget but also gave them more than they had perhaps anticipated. The proposal included not only re-utilising the existing TV Screen but with the addition
of a mini-computer and a combined Smart Soundbar, the boardroom now could operate in a number of different ways. This now means that the Boardroom can operate as a Video Conference facility as well as being able to manage the regular Chamber Zoom Network Events. The integrated Soundbar, microphones and camera really does come into its own when there is an online conference in progress as there is no need for additional microphones, the camera can be activated to auto frame the person speaking or it can be set to the optimum view of the room with an exceptional wide angle of image capture. Zoom or Microsoft

Teams meetings for the Chamber or any of the membership are also an added bonus as they can use their own logins through the ‘Guest Wi-Fi’ at Dorset Chamber. Outside of it being a better meeting space, it is now an in-house facility where Steve or any member of Dorset Chamber’s team can work, logged into their own system, to make calls or plan for meetings and presentations. This saves disruption in the office and avoids the use of personal computers for Dorset Chamber operations helping also to maintain security. So, all round a win, win for Dorset Chamber and for one of the newest members, Walcom Integration.

OnBuy raises £35M in impressive Series A+ funding round UK-based platform OnBuy.com sets its sights on unicorn status following successful raise UK-based online marketplace OnBuy.com has announced the closing of £35 million in series A+ funding through VC and strategic technology investors. Since its inception in 2016, OnBuy has existed to disrupt the status quo around eCommerce, taking on the industry giants that currently dominate the market. With its ‘level playing field’ offering, OnBuy has attracted more than 7,000 retailers, hosting over 36 million products on the platform. Built on a foundation of trust and transparency, the Bournemouth-based company vows never to compete with its retailers, simply offering a fairer marketplace to host well-known brands both big and small, and high-quality products at great prices. In just four explosive years, OnBuy has grown to £155M annualised GMV with only £8M in total investment until now. The new investment of £35M, which will be a mix of debt and equity, will fuel further meteoric growth for OnBuy, with sights firmly set on reaching unicorn status in the coming years. Significant input comes from players including Bring Ventures, Norway Post venture arm, Fuel Ventures, Guy Hands (founder and chairman of Terra Firma Capital Partners), Knut Frängsmyr (Deputy CEO of Klarna) and Richard Goulding (founder of Play.com) amongst other strategic investors. In addition to external investment, a fully funded £2M allocation was set aside for existing retailers currently using the platform. This funding will enable OnBuy to further develop its product offering for both sellers and consumers and importantly, pursue global expansion. Prior to this investment round, OnBuy raised
£5m in funding led by Fuel Ventures following an exceptional period of growth through the first half of 2020. This investment allowed OnBuy to expand its leadership team and enter a fruitful phase of development and further growth. Cas Paton, founder and CEO of OnBuy, comments, “The global eCommerce market is expected to total $4.2 trillion* by the end of 2021, a figure that is set to grow even more over the next few years, however it’s alarming to see that the industry is still following the same detrimental and unfair marketplace model that has existed for years. I created OnBuy to provide something unique: a clear, level playing field – and in our 4 years of rapid growth, it’s clear to see that this is a model that works to everyone’s advantage. “This investment will allow us to unlock even more potential and take OnBuy to the next level with an even better, easier to use product than ever before. We’ve made it this far with the help of our early angels, amazing team,

trusted retailers and of course all of our amazing customers, but we’re not nearly done yet. We’re here to make noise, challenge the status quo and change the digital marketplace landscape forever.” Thomas Tscherning, Bring Ventures, EVP Norway Post comments, “OnBuy has experienced tremendous growth and we believe the company has a very promising future ahead. We look forward to being a part of OnBuy’s continued growth through this venture investment that we believe will strengthen our portfolio of e-commerce activities.” Knut Frängsmyr comments, “Having watched OnBuy for some time, I’ve continuously been impressed and inspired by how they put their customers first - buyers and sellers. In an everchanging landscape, sometimes simplicity and fairness will prevail. The growth opportunities ahead for OnBuy and the team are tremendous, and I am thrilled to be invited to join this journey.” With the closing of this fundraise, OnBuy look forward to progressing with a roadmap of announcements in the coming 12-24 months which will include the development of a consumer app, improvements to the product infrastructure, the launch of new partnerships as well as further news of global expansion. www.onbuy.com

The Tank Museum scoops awards for online shop The Tank Museum has scooped two major industry awards for its online shop, following its impressive financial performance during the pandemic. The Dorset museum won Best Online Shop at the recent The Cultural Enterprises Awards and Shop of the Year at The Museum and Heritage Awards in July, fending off competition from the London Transport Museum and National Museums Liverpool among others. Tankmuseumshop.org, which was developed with Bournemouth based JD Ecommerce, achieved over £1m of sales in 2020 compared with just over £100,000 in 2019 – protecting jobs and creating new ones at the Dorset charity. Simon Prager, Head of Commercial Operations, “Winning this award for The Best Online Shop and Shop of the Year is testament to the hard work of our whole team and we are delighted and very proud to have been recognised by the Association of Cultural Enterprise.” Nik Wyness, Head of Marketing, “Loyal support from an existing social media audience has proved to be paramount in the success of the Museum’s Online Shop. “At the beginning of 2020, we already had over 240,000 subscribers on YouTube and an audience of 310,000 followers on Facebook, giving us one of the biggest social media presences of any Museum outside of the US. “When lockdown hit and the Museum was closed, we were able to go these engaged audience and ask them to support us by buying from the online shop. “Product placement in our Curator Q&A’s and on the end of our YouTube videos, as well as ‘Product of the Day’ posts on Facebook enabled us to reach our audience in a way that was in-keeping with The Tank Museum brand.” The Museum used its unique collection to develop products specifically for the online audience, with the Sherman tank slippers quickly becoming 2020’s best-seller. After appearing in several Curator Q&As, the Curator’s dog, Finn, became an unexpected star, enabling the sale of collie hand puppets and dog toys. Increased website traffic and a larger product range resulted in the need for a complete online shop rebuild, to provide better functionality and easier navigation, allowing users to navigate to any product within three-clicks. A combination of the new website, competitive pricing and digital advertising on Facebook, YouTube and Google Shopping, meant that the online shop attracted a multitude of new customers and generated sustainable growth, protecting at least 20 jobs and creating 4 new ones. Judges from the Association of Cultural Enterprise commented, “Absolutely astonishing achievements from The Tank Museum, who have gone above and beyond to connect with their audience and create opportunities for creative commerce – thinking outside the box and responding to opportunity”. When asked why The Tank Museum won Shop of the Year, the Museum and Heritage Awards Judges said “For their outstanding performance with brave moves at critical times, this winner demonstrated stunning business achievements with relatively small investment and, in the direst circumstance imaginable”. The Tank Museum have been shortlisted for a further award, the Website of the Year at the UK Digital Growth Awards. To see the award-winning Online Shop visit www.tankmuseumshop.org.

Tap into your feminine side What makes a leader confident is the ability to call upon their feminine energy. So often in our world of business we tend to think of strength as a quality that comes from a place of firm determination and a will to succeed no matter the cost. Even though we might want to think of a strong business leader as being defined in this masculine way, what really makes a person confident is their ability to call upon their feminine energy to any situation that may arise. Listening to the feminine side of ourselves may not seem easy at first for this type of energy is something that is often suppressed in many aspects of our everyday lives. If we can connect with this part of who we are, we will find that there is an unlimited source of strength available to us. Our capacity to tap into our intuition, consider the needs of those around us, and to view a situation with compassion are ways that we can show the world of business the true value that is part of our feminine energy. When we learn to incorporate this source of strength into our daily tasks and decision-making, we will find that we can be more flexible and open to the things that happen in business and more open to new ideas. Not only will we see the world in a different light, but we will start to realise the potential of this approach to both empower ourselves and those around us.

Misery to Renewal:
Professor Nigel Jump from Bournemouth University talks about the Misery Index. Some years ago, a Misery Index was invented (by Okun) to give politicians and policy makers a simple tool to measure current economic performance. In basic terms, since both are ‘harmful’ for households and firms, it adds the inflation rate and the unemployment rate together. If the result is high and rising, it’s ‘bad’ and, if it’s low and falling, it’s ‘good’. The real world is more complicated, of course. For many of us, unemployment is ‘worse’ than inflation and the two factors should be weighted accordingly. Also, there are other factors to consider, notably the index can be ‘improved’ (Barro) to also take account of interest rates and per capita growth relative to trend or some indicator of sustainability. (There is also an issue about the damage that negative inflation might mean.) Currently, the UK misery index is 2.1% inflation (CPIH measure) plus 4.7% unemployment, giving 6.8% overall. As the chart shows, this is not yet high historically but, of more interest is where it is going: both elements of the index are expected to rise further over the year ahead. First, notice that there is a strong correlation between economic downturns and the ‘misery’ index. The 1991 and 2011 peaks followed or accompanied recessions and/or debt crises. (What is it about years with a 1 at the end!?). Second, ‘misery’ was relatively low in 2020. Efforts to restrict the economic impact of the pandemic prevented an upsurge in ‘misery’. The concern now, however, is that an acceleration is underway. Even though interest rates are low, and growth is rebounding, the economy faces more ‘misery’ in the period ahead. Meanwhile, how, and when, does the other source of ‘misery’ - the pandemic itself, end? Most scientists believe it ends by Covid19 turning into an endemic disease. Successful and widespread vaccination prevents many deaths but does not overcome or remove the infection entirely. Covid19 will not disappear, and herd immunity will not provide comprehensive
prevention. It is more likely that human immune systems improve their ability to counter the virus and the virulence of the virus itself wanes. The problem is that, whilst most flu epidemics seem to run out of steam in about 2 years, the Sars (Covid) strains seem to evolve relatively slowly and can produce worse variants. Some experts believe we may be in a rolling sequence of pandemic waves for up to five years (2024) before the virus becomes endemic and largely manageable. Others, however, suggest that the USA (and other well-vaccinated and high case number countries), could be emerging into a new reality after the next winter (2022). As we assert frequently, productivity is what drives living standards over the long run but, since the mid-2000s, there has been little or no positive news on this front. Because of this adverse trend in output per hour, some estimates suggest the UK economy has lost one fifth of its real incomes potential (across many firms and sectors). Covid19 and its effect on the health service shows some of the problems: whilst the NHS response to the pandemic has meant more efficient use of some technology and organisation (increased productivity), it has also meant a less efficient use of space and some loss of functionality (lower productivity). The net opportunity costs of displaced treatments have yet to be evaluated, but the building backlog of non-covid19 work is worrying. There are also problems with measurement of GDP potential and real output linked to poor statistics on natural capital, human and social capital, intangible and institutional capital, especially as ‘new’ growth is increasingly less material in nature. The pandemic has shown there is a great need for data improvement and for recognising the value of the data itself in economic performance: a need for economists to get out of their silos and address more of the underlying normative questions. The need to ask what should be, as well as
the technical question of counting what is. The issue then is how do we manage the two miseries: the rising economic misery of higher inflation and unemployment and the persistent health misery of Covid19. Inflation is ‘cured’ by effective monetary policy, which will mean higher interest rates and less monetary growth, and effective capacity/ supply chains, which means better regional and trade development. Unemployment is ‘cured’ by productivity growth through investment, innovation, skills, entrepreneurship, and competitiveness. Covid19 is not ‘cured’ as such but becomes less damaging over time by falling virulence and rising immunity. All this management requires human ingenuity, persistence, and hope. Hope needs to be backed by technological development and improved infrastructure, supported by political openness and positive consensus in favour of trade and the development process. The vision thing means ‘greener’ growth and changing tastes about what is valued: what growth is and what it is for, and what the ‘new’ consensus counts as social satisfaction and wealth success. The agrarian economy became a manufacturing economy, which became a service economy. Now, we are probably switching to a less tangible, new value economy based on planetary sustainability and interhuman communication and enrichment. This sounds to me like a focus on: • the ‘good’ rather than the ‘evil’; • ‘trust’ rather than ‘suspicion’; and • ‘understanding’ rather than ‘ignorance’. There is a huge role for all the educators, development agents and business growers in this transformation from misery to renewal. www.bournemouth.ac.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS
I hacked my friend’s website after a SIM swap attack Here’s how easily your phone number could be stolen, why a successful SIM swap scam is only the beginning of your problems, and how you can avoid becoming a victim of it We hear of SIM swapping / SIM hijacking / SIM swap scams all the time, yet many people think it can’t happen to them, so I tested a SIM swap attack on a friend – let’s call him Paul – to help people fully understand the risks. How it works All I needed for the test was Paul’s real name and phone number. Paul owns a real estate agency selling luxury properties in one of the most expensive locations in the UK. Like many people, his contact details are on his website and with some good old-fashioned internet research (or open-source intelligence, aka OSINT) I found out a whole lot more. Acting like a true threat actor, I recorded any information I could find about Paul online, without submitting friend requests or follows on his social media. While some bad actors request a connection, for this experiment I kept my distance as I do know a lot about him. It didn’t take long to find out a tremendous amount of information about Paul, especially through his public Instagram feed and wideopen Facebook posts. I was located dates and numbers that meant something to him, digging around for birthdays and anything else that looked of chronological interest. I soon found birth dates both for Paul and his son – I only needed to see public posts before, during and after their birthdays to work out the exact dates. Most people in the UK use one of a small number of telecommunication companies, so I started with one and got lucky with the first company - it was Paul’s provider. After going through the system and getting hold of a very helpful agent I said I was Paul and gave his corresponding phone number. I then had to pass security. For telecommunication companies, security is to prove who you are by giving two digits from a previously agreed PIN code. Lots of people may memorise credit card PIN numbers or the code to unlock their phones, but this is largely due to the need to actively use these codes; I doubt many people log into their phone provider’s account often enough to memorise their code. TRAP 1: using a PIN that is easily memorable, e.g. a birthday, more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
which came in handy for my experiment. I don’t know how many cracks at the code you get, but it is more than one. As part of the verification process I first submitted ‘1’ and ‘1’ (Paul’s son was born in 2011). It was wrong - but the agent gave me another go. I chose ‘8’ and ‘2’ (Paul was born in 1982), passed security and was asked to describe my problem in greater detail. I gave a distressed account of how my phone had been stolen, how it was vital the SIM card was stopped, and that I had purchased a new SIM card and needed it ported across. I had a new SIM card ready to place into a spare phone and after giving the agent the new SIM number she confirmed the number would be ported within hours. At this stage, Paul may have noticed his network signal dropped and no text messages were coming through, but he would still have had access the internet via Wi-Fi (he did, as he was in the office when I called his mobile provider). Within two hours of turning my spare phone on and off multiple times I was granted full access to Paul’s number. I tested it by ringing my phone from the spare phone - the new SIM in my spare phone was now acting as Paul - his name appeared on my phone when it rang. This is where the danger really can start. The consequences I knew it was only a matter of time before Paul figured something was up, so I went to his website and noted the host - a popular website builder. I used his email address against the “forgotten password” link (a hacker’s favourite button) to submit my request and see what would happen. As Paul is moderately aware of cyberattacks, he had two-factor authentication (2FA) set up but to my joy, only via SMS – TRAP 2. Within seconds a code was sent via SMS to my spare phone. I entered it into his website and hey presto, I could now change his password. I could have completed similar actions on Paul’s social media and web-based email, but I had made my point and decided to retract. I did think it fun to place a huge smiling mugshot of myself on his front
page, which made for an interesting chat when I rang him on his landline to tell him his updated website was looking great. Paul was gobsmacked, but impressed at how quickly I had taken control of his most valuable asset. Protect yourself There are two main ways to thwart SIM swap attacks: • Never use anything linked to you in your PIN codes or passwords. • Where possible, replace SMSbased 2FA with an authenticator app or physical security key. • This would have stopped me gaining access to Paul’s mobile phone account, but more importantly, I couldn’t have changed his passwords. Once passwords are stolen, criminal hackers can block genuine account holders and it is extremely difficult, or even impossible, to regain control. The consequences for bank, email and social media accounts are particularly dire. As for Paul, I returned control of his SIM and website, helped him set up an authenticator app and he changed his mobile provider’s PIN code. I also helped him remember the code by teaching him the ways of a password manager. Just as importantly, I advised him to stop sharing sensitive personal information on social media and limit who can see posts or other material there. www.eset.com

Completing the form: • Follow instructions carefully • Adhere to word/character limits • Use N/A where not applicable, so the reader knows you’ve acknowledged the question Basic info: • List all your education and qualifications most recent first if the order isn’t stated. Emphasise subjects, modules, projects and dissertations relevant to the employer and the job. • In the employment and work experience section, give brief details of each, including voluntary and unpaid work if you wish. Use the responsibilities sections to get across your achievements as well as the skills and qualities you developed and demonstrated in each role. • When it comes to personal interests and achievements, employers are looking for clues to your personality. If you have a lot of interests and achievements, select those which demonstrate skills the employer is seeking. Activities that demonstrate leadership and team working skills are particularly relevant. • Many forms have an Equal Opportunities section that asks for details such as your ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation. This helps employers measure how successful they are at attracting applicants from different sections of the population, and your responses are not used for recruitment decisions. Answering such questions is normally optional. Motivational questions: Stay away from generic answers to these types of questions... Why do you want the job? Why do you want to work for our organisation? Your own background research will enable you to answer these questions more effectively. Your answers will help to evidence your motivation and demonstrate that your understanding of the opportunity is realistic. Whatever captures your attention, try to be as specific and authentic as possible.
Quadrant2Design Announce Launch of their New Website Market-leading exhibition stand designer, Quadrant2Design, have announced the launch of their new website. The Bournemouth based company, which has been running for over 20 years, decided it was time for a re-vamp.
It can be appropriate to tell a mini-story of how you demonstrated a competency in your past experience. Use the STAR structure for best effect: • Situation – Provide some brief details about the situation so that the reader can understand the context of the example • Task – Explain the objective/purpose, i.e. what you were aiming to do • Action – Describe what you did. Summarise your actions in 4 or 5 individual steps, if possible • Result – Finish with the outcome. Show that you met your objectives and, if appropriate, comment on what you learnt from the experience A top tip here is to draft and save all your question responses in a Word document, so you’ve always got a copy to reflect upon should you be invited for an interview. This enables you to proofread and also, you might send it to someone else to check before sending your application off. Our final top tip is that before writing any responses to questions, make sure you have done your research into the opportunity and reflect on how you meet the requirements.
MD Alan Jenkins said “We’d had the old website for a number of years so the time had come to refresh it to reflect our new branding and bring it up to date”. The new website, which can be found at www. quadrant2design.com, features a cleaner, stripped back design. It contains information on the business, the stands they build, and exhibiting as a whole. The company’s custom modular exhibition stands are adaptable and re-useable stands that are designed to be unique to each customer. The large-scale graphics, photo flooring, and features such as product showcases and interactive presentations, enable exhibitors to have a real presence at shows. Also on the website are examples of the company’s work, they design and build over 600 stands a year and offer customers a free redesign of their stand for every show they attend. There are a number of testimonials from happy customers who have benefitted from the company’s store and rebuild option, which takes the stress out of exhibiting. The pandemic did disrupt business however, all live shows were cancelled in the last year so the company was hit hard. It managed to survive by cutting costs and reducing in size to a skeleton staff. Now that the economy is opening up again and live shows are set to recommence in May, business is once again booming for the company and they are hiring many new staff to cope with the increased demand. Alan went on “Covid hit our industry hard, many of our competitors have gone under. We were fortunate enough to have the resources to weather the storm. It shows our customers that we are a secure, reliable business they can depend upon, and we can’t wait to get back to live shows”. The new website launch is perfect timing for the fresh start Quadrant2Design has planned for the coming months. The resuming of live events will be a welcome sign that things are starting to return to normal after a difficult year.

Competency-based questions: These are common and are designed so that you can effectively evidence the relevant competency (skill) that the recruiter is looking for. Do your research, and you should be in a better place to answer them. Here are some examples of competency-based questions... (make sure you read the questions carefully to be sure you’re focusing on the correct competency) • Describe a difficult problem you have solved. How did you analyse and solve it? What did you learn from the experience? (Problem-solving) • Give an example of when you have worked in a team. What was your role and what did you contribute to the team performance? (Team working) • Describe a project, activity or event you have planned and taken through to a conclusion. Include your objective, what you did, any changes you made to your plan, and state how you measured your success. (Planning)

Dorset 3 peaks
(with all the peaks in between)
by Louis Pulford | photos by Philip Cox
A moody start to the day set the tone for the arduous task my brother and I had ahead of us. Overcast, grey and gloomy – sounds a bit dour right? Well no, this was exactly what we needed. We were walking from Pilsden Pen, via Lewesdon to Bulbarrow Hill. Had it been sunny, I think I would have probably quit half way, due to experiencing a training walk with Ben a week earlier in the belting sun. I suffered serious sunburn so the last thing I wanted was hot conditions. We got lucky and what a beautiful day we had ahead of us. All 12 walkers met in a car park in Dorchester at around 6am and were bundled into a minibus and a van due to social distancing. The team assembled at the base of Pilsden Pen. We had a safety briefing and meet and greet with the guides from Charity Challenge, Laura, Brendon and Andy. All were highly approachable and overly positive – the sort of people you need on a 12-hour walk up every known hill in the North Dorset area. So after the brief we embarked on our mammoth journey, high-spirited, raring to go and all smiles as we chatted to other walkers. The guides were supporting us along the way with checkpoints, water and snacks. I mainly dug into the easy peelers as I love those citrusy little gems of goodness. There were plenty of water top ups too that kept us hydrated. The route was incredible, ranging from road walking, to navigating up streams, breezing through meadows, going round farmers’ crops, ascending and descending hills offering us incredible views and passing through a Holloway too. The guides had really done a great job of mixing up the terrain and offering us a challenging
set of paths, something I find really cool when going on a long walk – the more varied the better. We went through a deer enclosure and saw a herd of white deer, which was up there on the highlight list. We also had a lunch stop where lunch was prepped for our hungry ‘walking’ bellies. As the day went on, we acquainted ourselves with others in the team and the guides were constantly impressed at our pace. We made the nine-hour mark one hour and 40 minutes early; Andy almost looked shocked when we arrived. With a few injuries in tow and a couple of dropouts at this point, we still had a way to go. Stopping and sitting down for me was not an option. During the last few hours my knee began locking up when going down steep descents, which posed a problem because I slowed the whole team down, but I wasn’t going to give up so close to the end. Thanks to Sue, for the walking pole, I pushed harder to get to the end. Approaching Bulbarrow, the final summit, gave me a feeling of relief until I actually started walking
up the almost vertical hillside. After 12 hours of trekking my body was exhausted, so the last ascent after the countless hills we had already climbed was daunting, and others felt it too, but we made it. The team was strong and absolutely championed the walk, doing it in record time with this particular organisation, (I am not sure on any other records). Another notable hill was the one with the Cerne Abbas giant on it – that was a beast. I’d like to give a shout out to Suzy for keeping me company and great conversation, Hilary for being the ultimate power walker, Phillip for being a machine and taking all the photos, Brendon the guide who stuck with me as my knee was locking up, and to my brother, Ben, for finishing first and beating everyone to the top of Bulbarrow Hill. Well done to the rest of the team who took part during the day. Ben and I raised over £1,000 for Diverse Abilities on this charity challenge and we would like to thank all of you who have generously donated. REIDsteel unveils major new redevelopment plans Global structural steel firm John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has announced major new redevelopment plans in Dorset. The £30m turnover company aims to build a modern, cutting-edge manufacturing facility along with new offices in Christchurch. Including landscaping and environmental improvements, the scheme is proposed for REIDsteel’s home of more than 50 years in Reid Street and an adjacent site formerly occupied by Peeks Party Store and Monkey Madness soft play centre. REIDsteel, which employs more than 130 people, has launched a consultation programme today to seek the views of the community and other stakeholders before submitting a planning application. Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, said: “As a local business of many years’ standing, our heart is in Christchurch. “Our exciting proposals represent a multimillion-pound investment in the town and the local economy while safeguarding the future of our business for many years to come.”
Simon added: “We are keen to hear views about our scheme, with more details available on a dedicated website. “They matter to us and will inform our plans moving forward.” REIDsteel previously gained planning permission for 170 homes on its site so it could relocate outside of the town centre. Its directors decided to revisit the scheme when the opportunity became available to remain in the town with space to reconfigure and internalise its operations under one roof. The proposals include construction of the new factory and offices with access on to Reid Street. The majority of existing buildings on the site would be demolished. Simon said: “The layout of our current site leads to inefficiencies which reduce our competitiveness, hampering our ability to grow the business. “Redevelopment would bring multiple

manufacturing processes into a single, automated production line under one roof, including steel delivery and unloading. “This would give us a safer working environment, more control and the ability to implement new technology to improve productivity. “It would improve the local environment by cutting down on noisy outdoor handling operations and reducing interruptions to traffic flow on Fairmile caused by restricted access to our existing stockyard. “The redevelopment would allow us to continue our growth trajectory and bring greater employment to the Christchurch area with more high-skilled jobs.” REIDsteel designs, manufactures and builds many kinds of steel framed structures, including cladding and glazing, across the UK, Europe and the world. These include aircraft hangars, bridges, sports stadia, factories, churches, industrial and commercial buildings and hurricane resistant structures. To date it has exported to more than 140 countries. It contributes more than £2m to the local supply chain. www.reidsteelredevelopment.com

2020/21 has changed almost every aspect of how and where people work. The pandemic has seen local employers adopt new recruitment strategies and embrace more diversified recruitment options – including apprenticeships and upskilling staff - which they may not have considered pre March 2020. Add the effect of Brexit, which has seen far fewer European applicants for positions in areas including hospitality, healthcare, construction/manufacturing skills and it is safe to say that recruitment over recent months has been challenging. Our Employer Services team works hard with local employers supporting recruitment – identifying new apprenticeships opportunities and employment initiatives. We are starting to see more potential candidates coming forward to fill vacancies. As we move into recovery, employers must take into account the negative effect of the pandemic on younger entry level workers. Little or no exam and workplace experience, loss of social interaction and limited opportunity to experience and build the transferable skills part-time employment traditionally develops, will undoubtedly affect confidence and self-esteem. We should not underestimate our role as employers and training providers in the holistic support required for applicants. As the new academic year approaches we encourage students to undertake work experience to gain confidence prior to taking on a job or work-based training opportunity, such as an apprenticeship. We expect the phasing out of furlough, proposed reinstatement of universal credit criteria and arrival of school leavers to the marketplace should see many more applicants now actively looking for employment. With apprenticeship incentives and the Kickstart Scheme still in place now is a good time to consider reshaping and upskilling your workforce in preparation for the recovery months ahead. Two winners for Weymouth College at the prestigious 2021 BTEC Awards At July’s 11th annual Pearson BTEC Awards ceremony, the exceptional achievements of Weymouth College BTEC students Tamryn Williams (Construction) and Meredith Samways (Sport) were celebrated as they were each awarded a coveted Bronze BTEC Learner of the Year Award. Commenting on Tamryn’s achievements Maria Norris (BTEC and HNC lecturer, Weymouth College) said: “We’re all very proud of Tamryn’s achievements here at Weymouth College and in admiration of her determination and commitment to her course especially through the pandemic. We look forward to seeing her gain a successful future career in Civil Engineering.” Meredith’s success was similarly wholeheartedly praised by Martin Oliver (Tutor and Head of School, Sport and Public Services): “Meredith thoroughly deserves this National recognition and has been a fantastic Sport and Exercise Science student at Weymouth College. Her strong work ethic and supportive nature leave me in no doubt that she will have a fantastic career as a Primary School teacher and we wish her all the very best in her future career.” At the online awards event on the 7th July 2021, 19 category award winners were celebrated from around the UK and internationally in subjects such as Health and Social Care, Performing Arts, Engineering, IT, Business and Sport. BTEC and Weymouth College alumnus Gareth Ellis Unwin - Academy Awardwinning producer and Head of Film and Animation at ScreenSkills – was among those presenting awards. /company/dorset-chamber/
Cindy Rampersaud, Senior Vice President, BTEC and Apprenticeships at Pearson, said: “2021 has been another extraordinary year for our BTEC learners, tutors, teachers, colleges and schools and I am delighted that today we are able to come together and celebrate this year’s winners - and all of the individuals who will be awarded a BTEC qualification this year. The hard work and commitment demonstrated by our award winners, all of whom have achieved great things, during a time of unprecedented disruption, is extraordinary and I am proud we are able to celebrate their achievements.” Nearly a million learners across the globe completed BTEC courses over the past year; the career-focused qualifications are a vital route for those pursuing careers in sectors such as IT, business, the creative industries, healthcare, engineering, construction and future industries. This is especially important in the current context as the UK responds to the global pandemic and looks to kickstart projects to speed economic recovery. Jonathan Ledger, Skills Specialist at The Department for International Trade commented: “I must emphasise the importance of BTEC as a career-focused type of qualification and that for me is key. This is all about delivering the right skills to the right people at the right time in the right way and BTEC qualifications do just that. For me, BTEC qualifications are a game changer. They change lives and they help people improve and contribute to business and society in a big way. A huge congratulations once again to all the winners and all of the nominees.” www.weymouth.ac.uk

Smart meters, you should! You’ve probably seen the Albert Einstein advert on TV asking you to “Join the quiet revolution”, which is the Smart Energy GB governmentbacked campaign to help Britain understand the importance of smart meters and their benefits to people and the environment. Rob Anderson Director at D&A Procurement says: “ If you’re serious about helping to tackle the climate crisis, having a smart meter is not optional it is a must in the future, because if we all make little changes to take control, monitor and use less energy that becomes a big difference, which will not only lower our bills, but reduce our carbon footprint as well.” From January 2022 all energy suppliers will have binding annual installation targets with the government to offer free smart and advanced meters to their remaining nonsmart home and small business customers by the end of 2025, so no more estimated bills or supplying meter readings. The 1st generation advanced meters (SMETS1) installed since 2013 don’t have a display feature to monitor usage and don’t always allow you to switch supplier without losing the ability to send readings automatically. The 2nd generation smart meters known as (SMETS2), installed since 2018 are made up of 2 parts the meter itself with a builtin communication hub and some form of portable display or online app showing you the usage data 26

shared with your supplier in pounds and pence. “The government has put in place a programme to move the SMETS1 advanced meters onto the new network, giving them the same benefits as the new ones and if yours is not compatible then it will be replaced with one that can.” Added Rob Having a smart meter fitted in your home or business is optional, but for the desired effect to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions we all need to be hooked up to the new network to make a big difference, so maybe in time it will become mandatory. Rob said: “You will be contacted by your Energy Supplier to have a smart meter installed free of charge, so ask them if it is a SMET2 with a real-time usage display, otherwise
/company/dorset-chamber/
you may end up with a SMETS1without this capability as allot of suppliers are still trying to use up their old stocks. However, you can contact your supplier about having one fitted now, but you will probably have to pay.” There is no up-front cost for a smart meter, which is being funded by the energy suppliers, so will somewhere down the line be absorbed into the cost of everyone’s energy bills. The real-time display should theoretically lead to cost savings, as research suggests that people who monitor their energy consumption use less. Right to Work Checks The 1st July 2021 saw the end of the grace period for EU citizens to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, and the introduction of significant changes for employers to carry out Right to Work Checks for EU citizens wanting to work in the UK. It is no longer sufficient for an employer to just check and obtain a copy of an EU citizens Passport or ID card to verify eligibility to work and secure a statutory excuse, although it can still be good practice to keep a copy on file. Businesses must now conduct an online check for all prospective EU employees via the employer’s portal on the GOV.UK website, this can be done with the use of a candidate’s date of birth and a unique share code which can be obtained either from the applicant, or by direct e-mail from right.to.work.service@notifications. service.gov.uk The Home Office has updated their Right to Work Checklist and this can be found via the link: https://www.gov.uk/government/ publications/right-to-work-checklist As with most changes in legislation, the new process is bound to create additional challenges to start with, as of course not all candidates will be aware of the changes, and they may not know how to obtain the share code. The good news is, for once it is a very straight forward process which can be done via the applicant’s portal on the GOV.UK website. All applicants are required to keep their details updated on the portal should any of them change (for example when they obtain a new Passport or ID). It is worth noting that there is currently a backlog of EUSS applications awaiting decisions from the Home Office. In these cases businesses can support themselves with the Employers’ check online service via the GOV.UK website to obtain a Positive Verification Notice to be able to employ the candidate whilst they await a decision on their application. Hopefully, the new processes will quickly become the norm for both candidates and employers alike.
Lush deal
Cosmetics retailer Lush has signed a 10-year lease on a brand new warehouse in Poole as part of its sustainability strategy. The 40,128 sq ft detached building at Fleets Corner Business Park will house the Lush Greenhub recycling operation for empty product bottles and containers returned by ecoconscious customers as part of its Bring it Back scheme which was rolled out across the UK and Ireland this year. Property consultancy Vail Williams, a Dorset Chamber member, acted in the deal on behalf of Lush, which is headquartered in Poole and has 951 stores globally selling vegetarian bath bombs, haircare, skincare and makeup. Goadsby represented Federated Hermes. Legal firms Edwin Coe in Lincoln’s Inn, London, represented Lush and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP in Manchester acted for the landlord. Simon West, a Partner at Vail Williams working from the consultancy’s Bournemouth office, said: “This is a significant property deal in Poole, with Lush generating local employment and reusing containers and packaging in an environmentally responsible manner.” Natalia Davies, Environmental Officer at Lush Manufacturing, said: “The relocation and upsizing of our Greenhub enables us to accommodate the commitment we have made to our customers with our new Bring it Back scheme. The space allows us to have full control and transparency in dealing with our own waste from our manufacturing processes. “Our aim is to evolve from being a recycling hub to become a circular hub using the guiding principles of Zero Waste & Circular Economy. Our vision is to create no waste and use the
right systems that have no impact on our planet. Fleets Corner is rapidly becoming an ideal home for many of our large departments. “The collaboration between Fleets Estate and Lush will for sure support us in our mission to Leave The World Lusher Than We Found It, with innovation and environmentally friendly practices and alternatives to our buildings.” Unit M, one of five new warehouse units, comprises a ground floor of 35,967 sq ft and first-floor offices of 4,161 sq ft. There is parking for 78 vehicles on a 2.1-acre site, which includes a gated yard. Internal eaves height is 11.7m, with four electric loading doors and motion sensor lighting on the first floor.Fleets Corner Business Park has 560,000 sq ft of commercial accommodation, comprising distribution warehousing, trade, light industrial and office accommodation. The Benefits to Branded Workwear From corporate businesses to charities and sole traders, it has been proven that investing in branded workwear results in a multitude of benefits for your business and beyond. Brand Identity If your objective is to increase overall brand awareness, then clothing your staff in eyecatching, modern, and practical clothing is a great way to put your brand in front of clients and the general- public. Your teams will be commuting to and from their place of work via petrol stations, coffee shops and superstores and other public spaces, so this is a great opportunity for your brand to be noticed. We recommend choosing your garments carefully. Don’t just go for the obvious colours – consider reflecting your brand in the colours used on the base clothing. Alternatively, with new print technology, such as DTG (Direct to Garment) printing, your workwear branding can go well beyond that of just an embroidered logo and the cost of such a bespoke look has decreased dramatically in recent years. Consider adding a phone number, or website to your workwear – a useful way to increase potential engagement. Staff Morale Workforces feel more valued if they are supplied with quality and comfortable workwear. It often increases employees feeling of belonging to an organisation and can often enrich a positive team culture. Innovation in corporate and safety clothing means that workwear is more comfortable and has been designed to be more attractive than

ever before, therefore more workers are happy to wear clothing supplied by their employer. Return on Investment. If your business currently advertises in the regional press, compare the current ROI to the level of exposure branded workwear could give you over a sustained period Vs the short bursts of limited page coverage you get from printed advertising. Investing in branded workwear will pay dividend for months and years. Safety & Security Clearly, if your place of work presents and health & safety challenges, an employer has a duty of care and legal obligation to provide the appropriate protective wear. This presents another opportunity to reflect your branding on garments such as headwear and hi-vis clothing. Clearly, if your employees are wearing distinctive branded clothing, it is easier to identify visitors to your site as well as find your employees faster in shared working environments. with Frettens Solicitors Airbnb is a letting website where property owners rent out their properties on a short-term let basis. A short-term letting is potentially anything falling short of an assured shorthold tenancy agreement. Such a letting is often used when a property is vacant for a brief period, such as your home or holiday flat. Are short-term lettings allowed in a block of flats? Whilst each case will rest on its own merits, and more than likely come down to the interpretation of the flat lease, the answer has been an almost resounding no – it is not permitted. The majority of residential flat leases will contain wording in them preventing the leaseholder from doing the following: • Running a business from their property; • Diminishing the nature and character of the block; • Causing a nuisance or annoyance to their neighbours or neighbouring properties; • Letting their property on a short-term basis. Short-term lettings breach most, if not all, of the above clauses found in many leases, as well as potentially breaching the buildings insurance or the mortgage terms. If a leaseholder is breaching their lease by permitting a short-term letting, the freeholder or management company for the block can commence forfeiture proceedings against the offending leaseholder. If the practice of short-term letting is not stopped without delay by the offending leaseholder, the courts could provide a forfeiture Order. The leaseholder may also have to bear any legal costs incurred. Will Bartley, Property Litigation Lawyer, says: “Court action should be the last resort, and early legal assistance and correspondence can often be the difference between a negotiated settlement and a drawn-out and costly Court Application process.” This column is taken from Will Bartley’s Property Litigation Q&A, which can be read at length here: www.frettens.co.uk/site/ blog/litigation-blog/property-litigationqa-july-2021-airbnb-short-term-lettings Contact Information: Phone: 01202 499255 Email: wbartley@frettens.co.uk

South Coast Social Turned Five! One of the south coast’s biggest specialist social media agencies; South Coast Social hit a new milestone last month as they officially celebrated their 5th birthday since the company was founded. From starting out as a business idea crafted from a dining room table during her maternity leave, Managing Director Clare Groombridge has grown the company from their initial launch brands to currently working with over forty global businesses, specialising in social media content creation, community management and paid social campaigns. The business also employs seven people locally with a Head Office in central Bournemouth, with plans to expand the team further in 2021 to accommodate the requirements of their expanding client base. Managing Director Clare Groombridge comments: “I’ve always believed in celebrating our yearly ‘birthday’ (the date the company was registered) to highlight how far we’ve come, especially after the incredibly tough last year we’ve all had due to the pandemic
- we were no exception as a business. With statistics showing that 20% of companies fail in their first year and around 60% will go bust within their first three years, we’re proud of the strong foundations we’ve built - not only are we one of the leading social media agencies on the south coast, we have an incredible client portfolio of exciting global brands, a sister company in SCS Media and a soon to be launched training department. We also have some very big plans on the horizon for the remainder of 2021! However, for a long time now SCS has not been about me. I’ve stepped back and let my amazing team take the reins. I’m truly lucky to be surrounded by such a brilliant, talented and creative bunch who make me laugh on a daily basis. Being their boss is an honour and our success and reputation is just as much down to them” www.southcoastsocial.com

Ten Promotions announced as Frettens continue to grow Frettens have announced their biggest series of promotions in the firm’s 43-year history. Ten of the team have been promoted to new positions, including five new partners, as the firm continues to build on their recent success. Managing Partner, Matt Fretten on the latest round of promotions “Our team have been absolutely incredible in the past 18 months. Their collective hard work, application, and agility has meant that we are emerging from lockdown in a significantly stronger position than we entered. We’ve grown by over 50% in the last three years and have already added 10 new faces to the team this year. As we succeed as a business, it is important that those responsible for that success are rewarded and able to grow with us.” Five new partners Five new partners have been named, bringing the total number of partners at the firm to 11. Andrew Stynes, Ben Cobb, Michelle Petersen, Paul Burton and Simon Immins are all promoted from associate to partner. They will each continue to head up their departments in Christchurch, or the firm’s new Ringwood office. Karen Edwards has been promoted to Head of the Corporate & Commercial team, which recently welcomed experienced corporate and Intellectual Property solicitor Sarah Sillar. Amy Langlois, Anna Curtis and Kym Gaisford have all been promoted to Associate. Lewis Barr is promoted to Marketing and Commercial Director, two and a half years after joining the firm as Marketing Manager.
Career progression at Frettens Matt Fretten continues: “Two of the ten (Amy and Karen) did their training contracts here and have been with us since starting their career in law. On the other hand, four of them (Ben, Simon, Lewis, and Anna) have arrived since 2018 and made an impact in a short period of time. We have introduced a lot of new faces into the business recently and are still actively recruiting for several other roles. It is important that anyone joining us knows that if they do well, there is no limit to their progression.” Reaction to the promotions Ben Cobb on his promotion to partner: “I’ve been promoted twice in three and a half years, so there’s no policy that says ‘you have to have been here X number of years before you get promoted’. I’m not micromanaged and it’s a good size of firm in that we’re big enough to have good quality work but not so big that you’re simply a number. Everybody knows everyone.” Anna Curtis on her promotion to associate: “I have just been promoted to associate on what is essentially my 2 year anniversary of starting at Frettens. It was made quite clear to me at the interview that those people that work hard and want to progress their career within the firm will be given the help and support to do that, and that is what has happened in my case.” www.frettens.co.uk

How to manage remote performance management Remote and hybrid working arrangements look set to become the ‘norm’ for many workplaces going forward. This means managers will need to implement ongoing measures for effective remote performance management. Here are my top tips: Clear expectations are key to effective performance management whether employees are in the workplace or working remotely. A lack of clear expectations may lead to confusion, disagreements, and frustration. When it comes to what people need to achieve, we suggest focussing on output – what does the employee need to do to support the organisation’s wider aims and objectives? Ensuring employee wellbeing whilst they are working from home may be challenging, as you may not see your team or have the same spontaneous conversations as you would in the workplace. As such, regular check-ins via phone or video call to discuss what they are working on and how they are can be very beneficial as part of this. Managers may want to ensure that you arrange a mixture of 121 and team communication opportunities (e.g., via Zoom or on days when people physically attend work). It is also important during check-ins to discuss what has been achieved, again focussing on output – what have they done rather than how did they spend their time achieving it. This enables employees to feel trusted to manage their time, which can have a motivational effect, alongside positive feedback and recognition. Employees should also be encouraged to take their usual breaks, such as for lunch, and finish on time. Working from home can blur the boundaries between work and personal lives, leading people to work longer hours in some cases, which may result in burnout. Clear expectations and regular communication will be important for managers and employees, as we hopefully transition to a more stable time. If you would like any advice on managing employees remotely, please get in touch with a member of the ViewHR team today for an initial discussion. Crypto assets and Taxes With bitcoin advancing by more than 300 per cent in 2020, we take a look at how digital assets eg Bitcoin can be taxed. Any crypto transaction locking in a gain (even only in a digital sense) is subject to capital gains tax, however, depending on how your crypto assets were received, they can also be subject to income tax, inheritance tax or NI contributions. Capital gains tax Usually, individuals hold crypto assets as a personal investment, which means that they will be liable to pay capital gains tax (CGT) when they dispose of their crypto assets. There is an annual allowance of £12,300 for an individual. Income tax and National Insurance You will be liable to pay income tax (as opposed to CGT) and National Insurance contributions on crypto assets received: from your employer as a form of non-cash payment; for “mining”, which in this context means verifying additions to the blockchain digital ledger (mining will typically involve using computers to solve difficult maths’ problems in order to generate new crypto assets); or from “airdrops.” This is where you receive an allocation of tokens or other crypto assets, for example, as part of a marketing or advertising campaign. If you run a business by carrying on a financial trade in crypto assets, the “taxable trading profits” generated by the business will be subject to income tax. Inheritance tax and the remittance basis Crypto assets held by UK residents are seen as being located in the UK. The concept of “domicile” is therefore irrelevant when it comes to crypto assets. This means that a UK resident’s crypto assets will fall in their estate for inheritance tax purposes. This also means that the remittance basis would not apply to crypto assets. For instance, if you are a UK resident and trade in bitcoin, you will be subject to UK tax on all profits generated, regardless of whether you are a remittance basis user.
Wellbeing at work Fiona Clarke, emotional wellbeing therapist at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, explains how to improve your team’s wellbeing at work The impact of the pandemic on employee wellbeing has been extensive and wideranging, with the effects on emotional wellbeing likely to continue long after the virus has been brought under control. The Nuffield Health Healthier Nation Index reports that 41% of people stated their mental health had deteriorated during the past 12 months, with ‘pressures linked to work’ having the biggest impact on the nation’s mental health. It is clear that employees need additional support from their employers as they navigate ongoing change and uncertainty. Fiona Clarke, emotional wellbeing therapist at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, highlights why wellbeing and mental health is an important topic and explains what employers can do to support their teams and increase wellbeing at work, especially in the new era of hybrid working. “In the past, wellbeing and mental health support in the workplace has been overlooked leading to reduced productivity, low job satisfaction and increased sickness. More recently, presenteeism and ‘burn out’ are increasing, with employees juggling work and home life from the same location meaning that they can never fully switch off from work and are constantly on the go. “If your organisation has made the shift to hybrid working, adapting wellbeing and mental health support for your employees is imperative to ensure they are given the support they need when working both remotely as well as on site.” So, what can employers do to help staff and improve wellbeing at work? Lessen the stigma and encourage open communication – There is now less stigma surrounding mental health, with an increased awareness that it is an essential part of health and well being. It is important however that increased awareness translates into action. One thing I’ve noticed when talking to clients recently, is that they are unaware of what support their workplace has to offer to them. By talking openly about wellbeing and backing it with action managers can help eliminate a

workplace culture that implies the job comes before personal needs. Having regular oneto-one contact with employees to check in on how they’re doing allows them to build their confidence, so they are encouraged to approach a manager sooner rather than later. Train managers - managers should be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to deal with the wellbeing of employees. Investing in training to prepare managers for the demands of remote working means they can quickly recognise signs of distress and have the skills and confidence to support others. Compassionate management with good communication skills are key to supporting employee wellbeing. Every team member is different and it’s important to value employee opinions and consider them. Introduce mental health champions or mental health first aiders – mental health champions or first aiders are employees that take on a voluntary role to help colleagues with wellbeing or mental health concerns. Following training, they take on an active role to look out for signs of emotional distress, and are a point of contact for those who may be experiencing difficulties. During this new era of hybrid working, it’s even more important to set up a ‘buddy system’ for all new starters. Done well, a buddy system facilitates an immediate personal connection between new hires and the wider business. Good internal communications – keeping employees in the loop about company activities reduces the sense of isolation people can feel, particularly when your teams are working flexibly. Make sure you ask employees what would be helpful for them rather than make assumptions on what you think they would find helpful. “A great employer and manager know how to look after their team. We all have mental health, regardless of background, position or status, and this can change, depending on our circumstances and what is happening around us. Early and appropriate intervention that employers can take is so important in helping to alleviate any growing concerns.” Fiona Clarke runs a weekly clinic on Mondays at the hospital and appointments can be made following a telephone assessment. Nuffield Health can provide fast access, bespoke quality services and strategies to meet the needs of your employees. From awareness and education, right through to prevention and treatment. 742,000 dead a year … Not a warzone … Not a natural disaster … BUT the world’s workplaces. Cancer caused by work exposure to carcinogenic substances accounts for more deaths than work accidents, but it is an avoidable cancer. In the UK alone, almost 14,000 new cases of cancer are registered a year – 4,000 because of asbestos, and 10,000 linked to exposures from silica dust to diesel fumes. Workers risk getting lung, skin or bladder cancer because of what they do for a living, and thousands will die as a result. But with understanding of the risks and the correct equipment to use, this can be prevented. Many employers are unaware of the impact of carcinogenic exposure … and many don’t know what to do about it. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, IOSH’s “No Time to Lose” campaign aims to get the causes of occupational cancer more widely understood. Tower Supplies offers free workplace resources to help organisations educate to beat occupational cancer – timely as it was World Lung Cancer Day on 1st August. The Challenge of Getting Back to Business As businesses across Dorset emerge from the constraints of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Dorset Gateway team is soon to launch a new programme of support funded by BCP Council’s Bounce Back Challenge Fund. Whilst some businesses have weathered the storm of the last 14 months, there is no getting away from the fact that most have endured some monumental challenges. Whilst the government’s roadmap towards getting life back to some sort of normal has moved forward, there will no doubt be some challenges later in the year after the summer boom. More than 21,000 business loans totalling over £0.85bn were given to Dorset businesses between April 2020 and 31 March 2021. During that period, more than 134,000 employees have been put on furlough at some point and to varying degrees. Whilst these measures have helped to keep businesses open and have so far avoided mass redundancies, clearly there have been casualties with businesses either folding or having to radically change what they do and how they do it. Looking at key statistical indicators, we’re aware there is a long recovery ahead for local businesses. Latest figures from Dorset’s Labour Market Insights show that at the end of May 2021, 27,000 people remained on furlough and 6.7% of 18-24 years olds were unemployed across the county. With the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme – or Furlough Scheme as it has become known – winding down and the first loan repayments now being made, businesses now face another challenge; simply put, “what next?” Businesses will be considering their cash position even more closely. Hopefully the easing of restrictions will allow for a bumper period particularly in those parts of the more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
economy such as retail tourism and hospitality that have been decimated by the pandemic. There is no doubt, that taking the time to reflect on decisions made during the pandemic and revisiting strategies will be crucial to the future of many businesses in Dorset and across the rest of the UK. To help with the road ahead we are developing a specialist business support programme called Back to Business. Funded as part of BCP Council’s Bounce Back Challenge Fund, it will be available to all businesses based in the Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council area, irrespective of size, type or sector. The one eligibility criteria is that you must be looking pro-actively at how you can recover and thrive post-Covid. Back to Business involves a threestep process: a business health check; improvement workshops tailored to address the areas the health check identifies; and the chance to access focussed-funding of up to £2,000 towards the specialist support you need most.

Gov’t Cashback Not Just During Coronavirus A bespoke arts and crafts business has received £170k cashback from the government over the past 6 years scheme, an average of £28k a year. They manufacture materials for the arts and crafts DIY market and this is not in a traditional sector that would be associated with R&D. This case highlights that a business in any sector that is involved in any form of unique innovation that incurs costs via the payroll or external labour, can benefit from this very generous scheme.
Many businesses will have been looking to take advantage of any government grants or loans available during the Coronavirus. However, an annual cashback for innovative businesses has been available for the last 20 years and has the advantage of being a means of funding that doesn’t have to be paid back. Rob Sowden, innovation tax incentives consultant operating from Bournemouth, provides the example of a family owned business that has received £170k cashback over the past 6 years via the government’s Research & Development (R&D) tax credits
Many businesses have missed this incredible funding support from the government because they have tried to self-assess their eligibility or the opportunity may never have been raised by their accountant. It is not primarily an accounting workstream, it is about technology and identifying anything in the production of a product, or processes used, that requires iterative steps to get to an outcome, whether successful or not. The claims provider I introduced this business to assigned a technical analyst to assess what the client does and to compile a robust report for submission to HMRC. The company’s accountant receives copies of the reports and submits them to HMRC for a very rapid annual cashback.

If trading revenues have been lower during the pandemic, the great thing with this scheme is it allows a business to recoup a percentage of costs they incurred for the prior two years, providing an unexpected lump sum that is not taxed again and goes straight to the bottom line. A business doesn’t even have to be profitable or have paid corporation tax to qualify for a cashback. That puzzles many business owner/directors, but it is true. My advice to businesses is, don’t try and guess if you are eligible, obtain a free eligibility assessment based on a technical appraisal. Be aware that if your accountant offers to do the claim, they will likely ask you to produce the
technical report. Have you got time to read and interpret correctly the legislation? Even if you have received benefit under the scheme, get it checked out as to whether you have received maximum entitlement as you can claim any shortfall for the past two years, but there is a two year deadline, so year-end dates are critical. Business Cash Enabler provides a free service to businesses to check eligibility for innovation tax incentives. The client specified 10” in-wall touchscreens, an Artcoustic - 13 channel Dolby Atmos surround Sound with 4K laser projector and a nightclub sound system Luke Crutcher said: “Working abroad had its challenges, however the team were able to import all the necessary tech and deliver the project on time and on budget. We even managed to oversee the build of an exclusive bar area.” Living Home Tech are no strangers to demanding projects having featured on the BBC’s ‘Basement Wars’ and Grand Designs programs, where Londoners were documented as they expanded their homes the only way they could, underground. www.livinghometech.co.uk

important cause. Judging by the number of staff taking part in the race, we certainly have an active and healthy workforce.” “We chose to run for Julia’s House as we are inspired by their incredible work supporting families of children with lifelimiting conditions and aim to raise £2,000 for the charity. Every £100 raised, will help Julia’s House to provide an hour of care at home for a life-limited child and provide respite for their family.” “We’re so grateful for the support of the OnBuy team and wish them lots of luck with their training,” says Julia’s House Public Fundraising manager, Laura Maidment. “Support from local businesses makes such a difference to our fundraising, which in turn makes a huge difference to the

Employment Law:
Covid-19 and the future of the workplace Head of Employment at Steele Raymond, Deborah West, considers the future of the workplace in a post-covid world and the changes to employment law which may now be necessary to reflect a markedly changed ‘world of work’. The pandemic has introduced us to lots of new things – wearing masks, social distancing, and staying at home. But one of the most significant changes for a large portion of the labour market, the impact of which is likely to be felt well beyond the end of the pandemic, has been the requirement to work from home. The biggest real-life experiment in the world of work Pre-Covid, many employers would have baulked at the idea of any significant element of home working, concerned that employee productivity and engagement would fall. However, in what has no doubt been the biggest real-life experiment in the world of work – this has not proved to be the case. Both employers and employees have been innovative in the flexibility they have demonstrated in adapting to new ways of working, greatly assisted by technology – a little more than a year ago, few of us had even heard of Zoom or Teams – let alone realising that they would become part of our daily working lives. Successive lockdowns have meant that many employees have now spent more than a year working from home, and all the signs are that significant numbers would like to continue at least an element of that.
as it may seem for employers. Public Health England have suggested people should continue to work from home for the next four to six weeks where possible. A stance which seemed to gain the support of the government and Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who expressed the need for employees to return to their offices on a more gradual basis. Regardless of timelines, the concept being considered by many large employers is one of ‘hybrid working’ – whereby employees spend some time in the office for the purposes of collaborating with colleagues and client meetings and work the remainder from home. In doing so, there are a range of legal practicalities that employers will need to consider, ranging from amending employment documentation to how employees can be effectively managed and supervised remotely. Employers will also need to be careful that they do not inadvertently trigger a two-tier workforce, resulting in inequalities between those in the office who have more face time with management and those working from home. However, this a chance for employers to take a closer look at what has and has not worked
during this period of enforced remote working to come up with creative solutions that work for both businesses and their employees. Is employment law fit-for-purpose in a post covid world? Whichever route that employers choose to take; whether they opt for a full return of their employees to their physical office locations, a fully remote approach or a hybrid of the two, there is no doubt that existing employment law will need to evolve alongside these changes in order to maintain appropriate protections for both employers and employees. One obvious area in need of review is the law relating to health and safety of employees, given that is predicated on the basis of work and home being separate places. *The information set out in this article is correct at the date of publication (July, 2021). The effect of coronavirus on businesses is a fast-changing area and so it is important to obtain legal advice to ensure you are properly protected.

What are the downsides to an increase in homeworking for employers and employees? Although the positives in homeworking have been clear to see, we must also not forget that what might be a welcome move for employers and employees in one sector, is another sector’s death knell. With plans afoot for many office workers to retain at least an element of homeworking, the footfall in our city centres will inevitably dwindle and impact upon the viability of many food and drink outlets and retail stores more generally. Also, the increased acceptance of the ‘Zoom’ meeting, whether such meetings are hosted from home or the office, will no doubt see a reduction in business travel as employers seek to avoid the time and expense which come with face-to-face and onsite meetings. The way we work as a result of the pandemic will therefore not only impact upon how we work but will also influence the types of jobs that will be available to do. Will hybrid or flexible working be the new normal for employees? From July, employers are considering what a return to normal working will mean for them. The situation is however not as clear more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Greendale Construction start £1.4 million warehouse construction at Yeomans Way Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited has started work on a £1.4 million contract for Ilchester Estates, to construct three new warehouse units with ancillary trade counters, on land at Yeomans Way, Castlepoint, Bournemouth. Formed from a steel frame with an in situ concrete floor, the structure’s roof is clad in composite cladding panels featuring rooflights and photovoltaic panels. Externally, a combination of facing brickwork and composite cladding panels form the elevations.
Declan Miles, CM/QS, Greendale Construction Limited, commented: “Greendale is pleased to be working on this project for Ilchester Estates, with Vail Williams LLP acting on their behalf in relation to the development which is due for completion in January 2022. We’re also delighted to be working with Poole based Lionel Gregory Architects, and structural engineers, Godsell Arnold Partnership, also based in Poole.” www.greendaleconstruction.com
Jet black to the future The publishers of Dorset View and Viewpoint have stepped into the future and set an example in their industry by choosing to buy an electric vehicle for their magazine deliveries well ahead of government proposals to phase-out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030. All the directors of the family-run publishing company in Ferndown were in favour of taking this step to go ‘green’. With vans currently in very short supply, it was a stroke of luck that one was available from Hendy in Poole, the Renault Pro+ dealer. When Pulford Publicity’s managing director Ben Pulford spoke to commercial sales advisor at Hendy, David Southwell, he was told that there was one Renault Kangoo van coming in that was going to be used as a display model and that no other EV vans were in stock. Both Pulford Publicity and Hendy are members of Dorset Chamber and through this connection were able to strike a deal for the purchase of the new van. Dorset Chamber have access to manufacturer discounts from Renault for their members and Pulford Publicity were delighted to receive this added bonus. “We were able to utilise a government grant and the chamber connections to help push the deal forwards swiftly,” said Ben when David handed over the vehicle over on 5 July. “We are pleased to do our bit for the environment,” added Louis Pulford. The government is offering grants for the purchase of new low-emission vehicles, which is given to the vehicle dealerships and manufacturers direct. The grant amount varies 46

depending on the category of the vehicle. For small vans like the Renault Kangoo a grant for 35 per cent of the purchase price up to a maximum of £3,000 is offered. From 1 April 2021 until 31 March 2023, companies investing in qualifying new plant
and machinery assets, which includes new vans, can claim a 130 per cent super-deduction capital allowance. Pulford Publicty were able to take advantage of the benefits of going green and have reduced their carbon emissions as a result.
Dorset Chamber members have access to an exclusive affinity scheme offering between 11-27% off new Renault cars and vans. /company/dorset-chamber/
