DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME
Hello and welcome go the July edition of Dorset Business Focus, Dorset’s leading business magazine. As always, you’ll find this month’s magazine packed full of local business news, useful information and topical articles. Our cover story this month celebrates our new Peer Networks programme, funded by and delivered in partnership with Dorset LEP. This builds on the success of our first programme and has been hailed as one of the leading Peer Networks programmes in the UK. Peer Networks is a high value programme to truly turbocharge your business as we all look to a new bright future post-Covid. Meeting monthly (virtually) in facilitated groups, each Peer Network group meeting has a themed presentation on a key business issue and the group is then able to discuss and share how they could implement this learning in their respective businesses. The true strength of this programme is the ability to discuss and share issues with like-minded business people in an environment where confidentiality and respect are paramount. Our next round of Peer Networks begin in September. The programme is free and represents a very rare opportunity to access such high quality support at no cost. I’d thoroughly recommend this to all business owners, directors and senior managers and early booking is advised to secure your place. I’d also like to mention another hugely exciting project we are launching, funded by BCP Council as part of their covid-recovery support. We will be delivering a business transformation programme, working with former CEO of Sunseeker and Lotus Cars and former head of global marketing for JLR,
Phil Popham. Phil is a highly experienced business leader with a very strong track record in business transformation within some of the world’s leading brands. Working with Phil, we are delivering a business transformation workshop and following this, 20 businesses will have the opportunity to have one to one support from Phil in their business. This represents an extremely rare and unique opportunity to have free access to support at this level. Look out for these workshops and early booking is definitely advised. As always we have a packed forward events plan and we are delighted to announce major improvements in our events booking system for visitors to our website. As a business, we continue to modernise and embrace innovation and technology and these improvements are the result of a new CRM we have implemented. This has been a significant project for the Chamber over the last few months and will result in significant improvements to internal processes and high levels of automation. As a business we continue to really embrace innovation and technology and for us really highlights why it’s so important businesses have this focus. Finally we have just produced our annual review for the last financial year and you can see this on our website. Dorset Chamber weathered the storm very well with the hard work of our team and the
great support of our members, business partners, board, ambassadors and other partners – a huge personal thank you. We are very focused on continuing to do our best to support our members and the wider business community and we’ll be here to do our very best for you as we all look to more positive times. Lockdown Upgrade Opportunity / Marriott Prepares for Returning Guests
The Spa at Chewton Glen Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary
Lockdown at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott hotel and the flags are blowing softly in the breeze, the calm and quiet allowing the waves to be heard. The beach down below sparse with people except for the occasional surfer or early morning runner. Within the hotel a small team of staff work diligently around the clock to keep the daily requirements of the building ticking over while the rest wait in eager anticipation for news of a date for their return. The closure does however bring one benefit, the opportunity to gain full access to the 160 guest rooms to allow the upgrade of air conditioning throughout, ahead of the busy summer season! Today…the cheerful echo of voices and the hustle and bustle of the beach and promenade returns while up above the hotel stands proud with the doors open, guests arriving and bags being unloaded. Children are in reception with new buckets and spades whilst in the background telephones are ringing with guests excitedly making reservations and confirming meetings and events. With the philosophy of Marriott being take care of the associates and they will take care of the guests we have never been so ready to get back to doing just that here at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott and we cannot wait to welcome you!
Sleek, sophisticated and serene are the three simple words that put the Spa at Chewton Glen back on its pedestal, as one of the best hotels spas in the world, and a true ‘English Original’. Thirty years ago the inspired decision was made to build a worldclass spa at Chewton Glen, it was officially opened in June 1991 by his late Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It is hard to imagine today when spa culture is so embedded into our psyche that this controversial construction project divided the hospitality sector causing a tremendous stir, but we have always liked causing a stir and creating outstanding hospitality experiences. Another decision made in late 2019 to update the award-winning spa facilities at Chewton Glen in readiness for celebrating our 30th Anniversary, was also not without incident - but who could have imagined when our interior design consultant Anita Rosato finalized her plans for updating the spa that COVID-19 was waiting to make its dramatic appearance and an transformative spa renovation, due to be completed in the spring of 2020, would be subject to shut down when it was 90% finished and just one week away from re-opening. However, re-open it did and the angelic white, slate grey and zen calm mood board that Anita created now has spa goers feeling 10 years younger in 10 seconds – or so we are told!

Top tips for entrepreneurs from OnBuy founder and CEO, Cas Paton:
How can a global business support its local community?
It may come as no surprise that corporate social responsibility (CSR), as well as pursuing the environmental social and governance agenda (ESG), has become a must for businesses across the world. Those that are committed to CSR and ESG know that it can lead to an enhanced reputation. So, how does your business give back to its community? If you’re not sure, then it’s time to figure out how it can. As a business owner with a growing firm, it’s your responsibility to support the community whenever you can. You and your employees can make a huge difference in helping others. From our headquarters in Poole, OnBuy has become the world’s fastest-growing online marketplace, according to Alexa rankings, and we’re pressing ahead with global expansion which will see us in a range of countries – including US, France, Spain, and UAE – by year-end 2023. Even though our business has an ever-growing reach, supporting small and local is still highly important to us. Our business model is based on fairness and transparency, so we’re always focussed on doing the right thing, not the biggest thing when it comes to CSR and
charity support. That’s the only way it should be in my opinion. We’re proud to support music festival Teddy Rocks, having first sponsored the event in 2018. Teddy Rocks Festival takes place in Blandford and raises money for children’s cancer charity, Teddy20. Our sponsorship deal helps to cover the running costs of the festival, allowing Teddy Rocks Festival to donate all proceeds raised to Teddy20. This year, we’ve also spread a little magic to The Rainbow Trust Children's Charity, which provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness, donating 100 magic kits to families it supports. Plus, many of the OnBuy team are currently in training for October’s Bournemouth Marathon to raise money for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice. Here are some of my top tips on how your business could support the community:
As a business owner with a growing firm, it’s your responsibility to support the community whenever you can. 8

Support a youth sports team – chances are someone on your staff has a child on a youth sports team. You may be able to supply kit or funds it needs. Sponsor an event – sponsoring an event such as a local marathon, or even your employees participating, can be a great way to show support. Volunteering – volunteer your time. Whether big or small, businesses can show their support by encouraging employees to volunteer. Allow your employees time to volunteer to a cause of their choice. Donate your knowledge – you might be an expert now, but you were once a beginner, right? Before you became a leader in your industry, you were hungry for knowledge so why not look to support others in your industry looking to grow. As an expert, your knowledge is of value to others so share it! Good deeds aside, giving back is important from a business perspective as it can create stronger customer relationships, improve employee morale and consumers value social responsibility. I would always advise making sure whatever activity you are doing; it ladders back up to your purpose and values too. You can start anytime, so start today. www.onbuy.com

The President’s Column by Caron Khan
Why change is actually your biggest ally As an agent of change, my role is to work with businesses to take them through transition. I identify and instigate change, and then I support them through it. Sometimes they take a bit of persuasion; sometimes they’re led willingly. But how do I deal with change on both a professional and personal level? I spend my day-to-day life leading organisations through sometimes difficult transitions, and yet, when the laptop’s switched off and life’s throwing its own curveballs in my direction, how do I cope? I’ve experienced a lot of changes; they’ve come at me from all directions, and they haven’t always been welcomed with open arms. Some changes have felt painful, some have felt positive. All of them have felt ‘unknown’. Don’t hang on to something that isn’t working anymore It’s this sense of the unknown that lies at the heart of our fear of change. We fear the unfamiliar, and this causes us to hold tight to the status quo, even if the status quo isn’t working for us anymore. But the truth is this: Change is the only constant in life – nothing stays the same! So, if nothing stays the same, and change is our one true guarantee, then surely we should be approaching it with acceptance and respect. We should recognise that change has actually shaped our entire life, through childhood, adulthood, relationships, jobs, health… the list goes on. And whilst change may have felt frightening at the time, we tend to look back and recognise its inevitability, and its unavoidable place in our lives. On a professional level, I experience change all the time. Perhaps I’ll gain or lose a client, or their needs shift. Maybe I’ve taken the client to such a positive space, they can move forward without my support. For me, this is a job well done! The key to dealing with all these changes is to embrace them. If you see life’s changes as an evolution and an opportunity to learn and move forward, then the only way is up. Next time you’re faced with a change, take a moment to remind yourself of these three key points: Remember that change is inevitable – nothing stays the same Approach change with acceptance and respect – it can be your greatest ally Work with change and allow it to unfold organically – resistance is futile! Women’s team promoted to National League AFC Bournemouth is delighted to announce the promotion of its Women’s team to the FA National League. Steve Cuss’ side will move into the fourthtier next season and compete in South West Division One. The decision comes after the club applied for a process of upward movement, after the season was declared null and void for the second year in a row due to the Coronavirus pandemic. With the introduction of a tier system in December and a national lockdown coming into place in January, it meant that the Cherries had played just one league game in 2020/21, an 11-0 win away at Oxford City. An impressive FA Cup run also saw them reach the first round proper for just the second time in history, having knocked out Southampton Women and Buckland Athletic of the National League in the process.
After a disrupted season, and the side being sat top of the league in March last year, before the 2019/20 campaign was curtailed, Cuss couldn’t be happier to see his side promoted. Speaking with afcbTV, he said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the news that we'll be going into the National League next season. "It's been a disruptive couple of years with the pandemic and the regular season being declared null and void, but we're thrilled that our results have been taken into account and we've been rewarded with promotion. "I'm so proud of the girls. Their attitude has been fantastic, they've always had a smile on their face and this is exactly what they deserve." www.afcb.co.uk

David Sidwick, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner
wants to see local businesses thrive Long before I chose to have anything to do policing, my background was firmly in the business world. After early jobs in retail, hospitality and sales and following university I joined the pharmaceutical industry as a representative for ParkeDavis, eventually working my way up to join the company’s UK Management Board. I later set up my own business which facilitated the education of more than 17,500 secondary care consultants, so like many entrepreneurs I have sat in a small room with nothing but a dream of building something. So, I understand the concerns and issues affecting businesses large and small. When I campaigned to be Dorset’s Police and Crime Commissioner, I listened carefully to the views of our county’s business community. This included conducting what I believe was the first specific business crime survey to understand concerns, as well as talking to companies face to face. Now I have taken up office, I am absolutely committed to working with businesses as I endeavour to make Dorset the safest county in the UK. But before I talk more about my plans, it might be helpful to give a brief summary of what I do. The role of PCC has been around since 2012 but still is not well understood.
So very briefly, one of the PCC’s roles is to work closely with local organisations – which of course includes businesses – to prevent and tackle crime and promote community safety, and to make sure the views of local people are taken into consideration. A PCC sets the policing budget, which includes setting the policing element of the council tax – the precept. The commissioner also appoints new Chief Constables, which is something I’ll be focussing on over the next few months as I ensure the best possible candidate is appointed to replace James Vaughan following the great contribution he’s made to policing in Dorset. But the PCC represents the people above all else and so I will be consulting with the public and producing a Police and Crime Plan outlining local priorities for the Force. This is something I started work on as soon as I began my term of office and people can look out for more information about how I’ll be asking them for their views later this summer. Clearly, there are a lot of details yet to be revealed, but rest assured the needs of the business community will be addressed by this plan.
I want to robustly focus on cutting crime and increase visible community policing in Dorset. We need to fight organised crime, particularly the county lines drugs gangs who have brought violence into some of our towns, as well as tackle hidden problems such as domestic abuse, child abuse, hate crime, modern slavery and cyber crime. None of this work can be done in isolation and businesses, whether large or small, are part of the lifeblood of our county and the centre of our communities, so this is something we need to tackle together. I want to develop local issues for local problems. What works in Sherborne may well not be the same as what works in the centre of Poole, so I want local businesses to form part of the decision-making process about how we make our communities safer. I’d like to see the network of Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) expanded, as these do an

excellent job of encouraging muchneeded investment into our towns as well as funding schemes to cut anti-social behaviour. I’d also like to see more Shop Watch schemes helping protect against shoplifting and other crimes. I would like reporting made easier and a closer connection with the police so we can address these issues. CCTV has transformed the way that police and other partners are able to manage incidents in real time, as well as investigate crimes and bring those responsible to justice, so I will investigate opportunities for using this technology more effectively to protect our retail businesses. And most importantly I want to seek ever greater support for victims, which of course includes victims of business crime, because ultimately it is for these people that we need to bring about change. This has been an incredibly tough year for us all, and I want to see businesses in our county thrive as we emerge from the pandemic. Protecting them against crime is an essential part of how we can do that, and I look forward to working with you over the next few years to make these ambitions a reality. www.dorset.pcc.police.uk @DorsetChamber

Apprenticeship cash boost means up to £3,000 extra for businesses taking on apprentices It’s an exciting time for businesses looking to take on new apprentices, as the previously announced cash boost to the apprenticeship incentive scheme became available to claim from 1st June. Employers are free to choose how to spend the cash, and many decide to put it towards the training, travel or uniform costs for the apprentice. The benefits of apprenticeships for businesses are well documented. In fact, the National Apprenticeship Service state that the average apprenticeship improves productivity by £214 a week. Phil will begin his new role in January 2022 and joins the College with a wealth of experience in the education sector with previous leadership and director roles at Grimsby and Lincoln College. More recently, Phil was Deputy Principal at Rotherham College and is currently Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Selby College in Yorkshire. Commenting on his new role, Phil said: “I am absolutely delighted and very proud to have been selected to lead Bournemouth and Poole College at a time when technical skills for work, or further education study, are both vital to local people of all ages. The College plays a pivotal role in delivering this and training the workforce of the future. I look forward to growing our connections with key sectors such as engineering, health and digital when I start my new role.” The College’s Chair of the Corporation, David Ford, added: “Phil demonstrates a huge passion for learning, forward vision and commitment to the highest quality of teaching. We are confident that Phil’s experience and skills will lead us on the next part of our journey.” Phil’s appointment coincides with current Principal, Diane Grannell’s retirement, after serving six years in her role at the College. Diane said: “Although it is with a heavy heart that I am leaving Bournemouth & Poole College, I am pleased to hand over its leadership to such capable hands. I wish Phil all the best in his new role and hope to see The College continue to grow and develop in the coming years. “During my remaining time at The College, I will work closely with Phil to ensure he has everything in place for his new position.” Phil will join The College at a pivotal time with its Lansdowne site to soon benefit from the government’s national £1.5bn fund to improve its learning environments. Additionally, new courses are continually launching in exciting new sectors. www.thecollege.co.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS
What do you need to know when setting up a business? Karen Edwards is a Commercial Associate at Frettens Solicitors and is recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ in the Legal 500, the leading independent guide to law firms and lawyers in the UK. Here, in the first article since the launch of our new website, she details some key points to consider when starting up a business, including legal requirements and some practical pointers too. How do I start up a new business? Setting up a new business can be a daunting, as well as exciting, time. Figuring out what needs to be put in place in legal and practical terms can feel like a bit of a minefield. This article sets out a quick guide to the common issues every business start-up should consider before they begin to trade, whether this is as a sole trader, through a partnership (or LLP), or as a limited company. Following these steps will help to ensure that the correct building blocks are in place. What legal requirements are needed to start a business? Whilst there are limited requirements actually imposed by law when setting up a business,, here are some of the incredibly important ways that you can protect yourself and your business: • Get internal agreements in place • Prepare and issue employment contracts • Get some terms and conditions drawn up • Make sure your business has obtained all the necessary licences, consents etc. • If operating from rented premises, ensure that there is a formal lease in place • Protect intellectual property rights What agreements do I need to start my business? A shareholders agreement and a partnership agreement are commonly used when starting a new business, but; are they really necessary? Is it necessary to have a shareholders agreement? If you choose to operate under a limited company which has multiple shareholders, put a shareholders agreement in place. This governs the relationship between the shareholders by setting out their rights and obligations and in turn, reducing the risk of any disputes in the future. What is a partnership agreement and do you need one? If you intend to operate as a partnership, a partnership agreement should be entered into, which sets out terms such as how profits and losses will be shared, the decision making process, and what happens should someone want to leave the partnership. Is it a legal requirement to have a contract of employment? Employers must, by law, have employment contracts (or at least a statement of terms and conditions of employment) in place regardless of the number of employees it engages. In the same way, ensure that any relevant more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
policies are in place (these are often presented within an employee handbook), such as those relating to sickness, parental leave, GDPR and working from home. At Frettens, we can help you draft a contract of employment. How can I ensure that my employees don’t become my competitors? Protect the goodwill you are likely to build up in the future by ensuring that those working in the business agree to adhere to a duty of confidentiality and to restrictions preventing them from competing with the business during their employment with, and (for a certain time) after they leave, the business. However, always remember that any restrictions must be reasonable to protect the legitimate interests of the business. Our employment team can advise you on the inclusion of confidentiality clauses and restrictive covenants within contracts of employment. Does a new business need to have some terms and conditions? The short answer is that this is always advisable. It is crucial to make customers (whether these are businesses or consumers) aware of the terms on which your business trades. This can avoid costly and time-consuming disputes arising in the future. In her first article, my colleague Olivia Parksinson wrote about terms and conditions; detailing what you need to include in them. What licences and permissions does a new business need? Ensure that you have obtained all of the necessary licences, consents, permissions, accreditations etc. required for the type of business being operated. For example, planning permission may be required for the specific use of a premises, certain accreditations might be required before services can be provided and licences may need to be acquired before certain goods can be sold. What do you need to consider as a business operating from rented premises? If operating from rented premises, ensure that there is a formal lease in place so that you have the comfort of knowing there is security of tenure. The goodwill that you build up may become associated with the location of your business, so this is another reason to make sure occupation is secured. Our Commercial Property Team can help you with any commercial lease related queries. How can intellectual property be useful to new businesses? Your business trademark could hold significant value, so it is crucial that this is registered with
the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to prevent others from using it, or worse still, registering it before you do. In the same way, make sure that any trading name you wish to use does not infringe any thirdparty intellectual property rights. The IPO website has a useful tool for checking what trademarks are already registered. What other things do start up businesses need to consider? There are as many practical issues as there are legal ones when starting out in business. Here are some other areas that you should consider: Funding a new business Ensure that you have necessary funding in place to allow the business to have a sufficient capital to get started with. Speak to your bank manager to see what facilities are available and if there is access to any grants for the type of business you are intending to run. If you are required to provide security for any lending, make sure you take legal advice. Insuring a new business Get the right insurance cover. This is certainly worth a mention for the obvious reason that things can go wrong, so it is fundamental that for you and your business there is some level of protection. We would always recommend that you speak to an insurance provider before starting to trade. IT considerations Ensure you have sufficient IT systems in place. You may require a range of hardware and software for your business to run effectively and efficiently. If a supplier asks you to enter into a formal contract (which is more than often the case), take legal advice to ensure that you are not signing up to unfavourable terms. Protection against cyber crime It is also worth noting the risks of cybercrime, which can cause businesses significant loss, so we would always recommend that you get sufficient protection in place and educate yourself and your staff on what to look out for. Monetary considerations Speak to your accountant to take advice on areas such as registering with HMRC, who will be responsible for preparing accounts and how payroll with will administered.

Free Business Customer Credit Checks with Acquit Debt Recovery Ltd Dorset Chamber has added business customer Credit Checks to its growing list of member benefits, by partnering with Debt Collection and Outsourced Credit Control specialist Acquit Debt Recovery Ltd to provide members with the new service. Dorset Chamber members can now request up to 5 free business Credit Checks per month, helping members to improve cash flow and reduce the potential for bad debt. Diane Bantten, owner and Director of Acquit Debt Recovery Ltd, whose legal background provides clients with a unique and bespoke service, explains: “It’s simple: cash is king and knowledge is power. Businesses who undertake due diligence before providing goods and services to new customers can safeguard against unpaid invoices and save themselves a lot of time and pain chasing payments. Credit checks not only look at whether a customer can pay, they also throw up any reported issues they may have had paying other providers in the past.” Acquit Debt Recovery Ltd’s success in this field is down to Diane’s 25+ years of experience as a Lawyer before launching Acquit Debt Recovery Ltd in 2010. Unlike some law firms undertaking debt 20

recovery services and who often automate debt recovery letters and indeed the whole process of recovery, Diane take a different approach. By assessing and handling each case herself, Diane offers a very personal approach fees are added to the debt – along with late payment compensation and interest. More often than not the client ends up “in pocket” not out of it. Diane’s legal expertise can also catch debtors off-guard, as they sometimes believe they are dealing with a ‘standard’ debt recovery agency instead of a lawyer who is well versed in this field. Ian Girling, Chief Executive at Dorset Chamber said: “We have spent a lot of time talking with members and the pandemic has highlighted that good cash flow management is crucial for all businesses. We believe it is very important to support our members by providing this service to safeguard against bad debt in the first place and working with Diane was the obvious choice.” Members can use an online form to request a business customer Credit Check Report within 48 hours of submission. Investing in the future, the Blue Sky way! We are delighted to share that our apprentice, Lewis Baldwin, has passed the first of his Financial Planning exams putting him well on the way to achieving his ambition of becoming an Independent Financial Adviser. Lewis joined Blue Sky in late 2020 as Trainee Financial Planner and Admin Support. Our Managing Director, Gary Neild, found him to be engaging and incredibly willing to invest in his own career from the outset and so, despite the pandemic, was delighted to offer Lewis a fulltime apprenticeship role. “As an ex-teacher, I love to help develop the minds of younger people. There’s something special about Lewis though – he’s always upbeat, keen to learn and thrives on the working environment we create. His zest for life has been a tonic during the last year and it’s such a pleasure to be part of his journey into our industry.” Lewis was enrolled with the Chartered Institute of Insurance’s Aspire Financial Adviser Apprenticeship Programme at the start of January 2021. The apprenticeship runs for 24 months and consists of exams, written assignments and off-the-job training.
We asked Lewis to share his favourite things about working with Blue Sky. Here’s what he said: “Number one has to be the culture in the team. I have worked for companies where you are deemed a cog in the wheel, and it is all about the money. Here at Blue Sky, I feel valued and can make a real impact. In addition, I enjoy the banter in the office. I also thrive on the fact that we all go above and beyond for clients. That commitment to service really matters to me and I know we make a difference to people’s lives and financial situation. I have first-hand experience too as my father became a Blue Sky client this year, after years or stressing about money. The cash flow plan enabled him to see he wouldn’t run out of money and could enjoy his money more. It really has been life changing for him.”
Tammy Dimond is Lewis’s direct line manager, responsible for ensuring Lewis is trained and challenged in his daily work. His core responsibilities right now are general admin to help the business run smoothly and effectively, sending Discovery Forms and Risk Questionnaires to clients, helping the paraplanners and advisers prepare for Client Reviews and dealing with Letters of Authority forms. A year from now, Lewis hopes to have completed three more exams and be closer to completing his apprenticeship. The whole team at Blue Sky will do all we can to support Lewis in his growth and development as we see apprenticeships as a means of investing into the future of our industry. www.blueskyfp.co.uk
The Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning includes six exams, the first of which Lewis passed on the 14th May:
•
R01 Financial Services Regulation and Ethics R02 Investment Principles and Risk R03 Personal Taxation R04 Pensions and Retirement Planning R05 Financial Protection R06 Financial Planning Practice
• • • • •
Lewis diligently spent over 100 hours revising and preparing for this exam. On completion of all exams, Lewis will obtain his Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning; the basic regulatory requirement to give financial advice to clients in the UK. Once he’s done this, he will go on to specialise as each of our team have done.
The cash flow plan enabled him to see he wouldn’t run out of money and could enjoy his money more. It really has been life changing for him. 22

protection with Tower Supplies
Dorset: A PostPandemic Boom? As we emerge from the ravages of the pandemic there are definite signs that businesses in Bournemouth are getting back to normal.
“Anyone can sell safety but you wouldn’t buy safety from anyone” That’s the dictum of the British Safety Industry Federation’s Registered Safety Supplier Scheme – a membership that Tower Supplies joined in 2017. Every year Tower’s quality processes are audited by the BSiF – they also take a Tower product for physical testing and inspection as well as reviewing all the documentation. Tower are proud to be members of the BSiF as the federation’s purpose and goal is for a better, safer work environment for those exposed to risk and to be a point of excellence. As Tower’s Director of Marketing I attend the BSiF’s AGM, conference and events, and I am a member of the federation’s Special Interest Groups that meet to discuss legislative developments and their implications for products. The BSiF provides support to members like Tower whose role is to help keep people safe and healthy at work. As distributor of personal protective equipment, Tower is also part of the BSiF’s Registered Safety Supplier Scheme that aims to enhance quality and capability, driving up standards in the PPE supply chain. Tower, as a BSiF member, has the right to use the Primary Authority status by partnership with Trading Standards. For buyers/users this means that we are being recognised as a point of excellence. To prove such expertise and experience, Tower voluntarily enrols staff onto the federation’s OFQUAL qualification (called the Safe Supply Accreditation) designed for people that sell safety equipment. Tower has a 100% end theory test pass rate – I’m pleased to confirm I’m qualified and can say “Anyone can sell safety but you wouldn’t buy safety from anyone”. Local insurance entrepreneur and owner of Coversure Poole, Weymouth and Maidstone, John Palmer shares his thoughts on this. As the owner of a string of insurance brokers with specialisms in everything from business to landlord insurance, John is ideally placed to tell us how the local economy is faring. And, as you can see from the following, he feels that there’s plenty of reason to be believe that 2021 will not just be a year of recovery, but of growth. How has business been since we came out of lockdown? Have you seen a rise in activity? We’ve never been busier. Since early March when plans for easing restrictions were announced we seen a flood of quote requests. From taxi drivers to tradesmen, everyone’s been gearing up to get back to normal. Has covid changed the way your customers work? What does the ‘new normal’ look like for SMEs do you think? It’s had an impact on everybody. For some, like our taxi insurance customers it’s been relatively slight in terms of day-to-day operations – facemasks, cleansing interiors between fares and the like. For others, such as our business insurance clients, its been much more significant. Many have decided to make remote working a long-term option and we’ve seen a lot more request for homeworkers’ insurance. I think overall the new normal will be all about flexibility when it comes to office-based work, though for many others – like us – face-to-face service will remain the ideal. There’s been a lot of talk in the press about people moving from the south east to places like Bournemouth – which offers coast and countryside. Have you seen more activity in the property insurance sector? The property market has gone nuts! I read on Zoopla the other day that prices have risen by 14.79% in the last year in Bournemouth. We’ve never seen so many requests for home, holiday home and landlord insurance quotes. The whole working from home thing has turned Dorset into a Mecca for those seeking the perfect work-life balance, and who can blame them? Tourism and hospitality are key sectors for the Dorset economy and both have had a tough time this year. Are there signs of this improving? We have a lot of hospitality and event clients and when the first lockdown hit they were really worried. Furlough saved a lot of them from going under, but its not been easy. They had some respite in the summer, which was madly busy around here, but loss of the Christmas trade was another blow. The limited reopening has given cause for optimism and if our holiday let clients are to be believed we’re in for an incredibly busy summer across the county. /company/dorset-chamber/
Insurance, like advertising, is a good barometer of the state of economy. What’s the consensus on the future of the Dorset economy? Are local business people optimistic about the future? Yes and its growing. I think most business owners just wanted to weather the storm and come out the other side. As restrictions have lifted everyone’s seen a surge of pent-up demand and the biggest problem now is being able to service everyone’s needs. The surge of new people coming to the area will fuel this growth and I think we’re in for a golden age. Commercial vehicle insurance is a big part of your business and that’s a market that’s changed rapidly in the last few years thanks to the death of diesels and the rise of electric vehicles. Are you seeing taxi drivers and fleet owners looking for EV cover? It’s still a relatively small part of our business, but it’s growing and will soon or later be the only game in town. From what I hear sales of new electric and hybrids are racing up and even CV drivers like taxis and couriers are choosing them owing to the cost savings and the increased restrictions on polluting vehicles. Time will tell, but if it means cleaner air then its good by me. What are your hopes for 2021 for both your business and Bournemouth? For me I just want to have a period of calm in which I can do my job and continue to grow my business. 2020 had more than enough drama for me and I’ll be happy to see us getting back to normality. As for the town – and the county for that matter – I think its an incredibly exciting time. More and more people want to be here, businesses are opening up all over the place and it seems the sky’s the limit! www.coversure.co.uk

Dorchester gets a ground-breaking new App! Dorchester now has a great new resource for locals and visitors. Key Digital working with The Dorchester Business Improvement (DBID) in partnership with Dorchester Town Council has launched an exciting, feature-rich smartphone App which should prove to be a real hit with both visitors to Dorchester and the local community. Phil Gordon, DBID Project Director told us “This is a fantastic tool to provide you with information about almost anything you might want to know to help make your visit to town an enjoyable one. With great innovation and a lot of hard work, especially by the team at Key Digital, I think we have produced something incredibly special for our County Town! Dorset Council have now closed the TIC in the library and so, the timing of this project could not have been any better – You can think of it as a kind of……… TIC in your pocket! The DBID also set up a network of Tourist Information Points around town (TIP’s) in shops and attractions in town that will continue to stock some literature for visitors to town.” The brand-new smart phone App for Dorchester, called ‘Discover Dorchester’, is designed and built in Dorchester. The purpose of the ‘Discover Dorchester App’ is to promote the town, its heritage, attractions and the town’s businesses. Firstly, for visitors coming (or thinking of coming) to the South West, so that they can discover how much there 26

is to see and do in Dorchester, plan an itinerary, or just navigate around town when they arrive. Secondly, for the local population, to be informed about events and special offers in town, make a list of their favourite places/shops or just explore and discover new shops or other businesses around town centre. David Lakins, Owner of Key Digital “As a local digital agency I am delighted the Key Digital Agency team were given the opportunity to deliver such an innovative solution to help the visitor economy of Dorchester bounce back after lockdown”. Neil Strudwick DBID Chairman states “The Dorchester BID started discussing the idea with our digital partners (Poundbury-based Key Digital) some time before Christmas as they had already developed an App for a holiday park client and felt that with some further development, it could work well for Dorchester! DBID had discussions about the proposed App with Dorchester Town Council early this year and we were delighted to learn that they would like to partner with us and jointly fund the App project”. Dr Jon Murden, newly appointed Chairman of the Dorchester Tourism Partnership and Director of the totally refurbished Dorset Museum that re-opens on the 28th May comments “The Discover Dorchester app is a fantastic innovation and gives you an instant connection in the palm of your hand with /company/dorset-chamber/

Cllr Gareth Jones, Mayor of Dorchester said “The new Discover Dorchester app is an impressive resource for visitors to the town, helping them to get the most from their visit to the town. The wide range of town information will be equally valuable to residents. The Town Council is delighted to be partnering with the Dorchester BID in this exciting initiative”. Protecting your business against fraud Scams targeting businesses are common and it is important to be alert to these. We look at a few here. Have you received a request to change a supplier’s bank details? A fraudster may have gained access to a compromised email account belonging to the employee of a supplier’s finance team. This may be used to communicate with you to change bank details. Always check directly with the supplier on a known telephone number (not one on the communication) before making any payment. Have you received a large (or unusual) order out of the blue? Be wary if the payment is made by cheque or Bank Draft as often fraudsters get in contact to amend or cancel the order and request a refund asking for an electronic payment. It often turns out the original cheque or Draft is returned unpaid and you incur the resulting loss. Ask questions when taking an unusual order, make sure the payment has cleared and irreversible before making any refund especially if this is requested to be paid to a different account or by a different method. Have you received communication from your bank regarding suspicious transactions, malicious software or there’s an internal investigation and you must avoid contacting bank staff? Contact is often notified as urgent to get you to act as quickly as possible, giving you minimal time to think about whether the call is fraudulent. In the moment, panic or a lack of concentration can happen so it is important to take a step back, think twice and double check first by calling back the Bank on a known number, not one that someone has given to you. Conclusion Regular staff training and vigilance is key, alongside keeping up to date on possible scams via your bank’s security section on their website and that of the National Cyber Security Centre. Building Resilience for Business Leaders
– top leaders ask ‘how is the boss’? Inspired by Dorset Chamber’s ‘Got your 6’ initiative, British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) included a session on the impact of mental health challenges amongst our business leaders in their recent two-day conference. The BCC has 53 accredited UK chambers and over 70 global affiliate members and the online event attracted attendees from all over the world. The debate was facilitated by Past President and GU6 lead, Liz Willingham who was accompanied by Paul Farmer, CEO of Mind and Lord Mark Price from WorkL. A live audience Q&A completed the session. The pandemic has highlighted more than ever the ‘human’ behind the worker, including the boss, and talking about our pressures and struggles has hopefully become more acceptable. Having an insight to people’s personal lives whilst working from home, with the toddler or pet Zoom intrusion, has perhaps created a new opportunity for two-way dialogue about how we, as people, are feeling, whatever our role or responsibility in our organisations. The debate pursued an avenue as to how can we develop a balanced approach to build resilience, from peer support – just as the GU6 programme offers – to self-awareness and how we have to start looking at ourselves and our lifestyles to make sure we are fit for the future. As individuals we will have a different toolkit – it’s not a one size fits all. If our leaders are in good shape, it bodes better for our wider economy. As we head
into the next chapter of pandemic easing, we are likely to see the full repercussions of our challenging past year or so and making sure we have resilience and energy to see us out the other side is something we all need to take responsibility for. Liz was pleased the GU6 initiative, supported by Lester Aldridge, has made an impact on discussion surrounding the strength of our leaders on a global stage. She said; “It was great to discuss the subject with such high level individuals who both had fascinating perspectives on how our business leaders should position themselves post pandemic.” “I can see the range of opportunities we have for GU6 here in our home county growing and growing. Individuals within our business community are becoming increasingly engaged with the initiative; the future looks exciting. If we catch one leader who is struggling, we have done the right thing.” www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/gu6-dorset

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS
Are we witnessing a sea-change in how we look at business leadership? “As things begin to open back up, it is becoming very apparent that employees need a new style of business leadership to remain engaged.” Says Lee Groombridge of 7PM2™ Coaching, Mentoring & Training Company With some high-profile news stories in the past month, and many more to follow, a business owner or leader is being made aware of workforces now requiring much more from a job than just a pay cheque. The last 16 monthsor so have been challengingfor many businesses, however it’s safe to say that some have prospered, some have been put on hold, while some have sadly failed to survive. Although business success has varied there will be some common challenges facing each and every business owner and leader moving forward. Sure, there may be multiple economic hurdles or business function issues and yet potentially the largest challenge is going to be with people. Attracting, developing, caring for and retaining talent. Why is this challenge on the increase and why is this happening now? There is a hot topic currently around flexibility of remote working which highlights this change, but this is a bit of a distraction from what is really going on. Employee wellbeing has seen a meteoric rise and yet this is just surface level evidence that employment, from an employee perspective, has changed. We are witnessing the fact that people’s priorities have rearranged and the hierarchy of what is most important to them about a job has evolved. If we are to be honest, this was happening well before the impact of the pandemic, however it would be naive to ignore that this has accelerated the change. This is mainly due to the lockdown arrangements people have experienced. People have formed new insights on life in general and this period has been long enough to undeniably understand everyone has developed new behavioural habits, some conscious and some unconscious. The pandemic has been an almost perfect illustration and metaphor to describes the period of time we are all in. We are in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous time (commonly known as VUCA) and as a business owner or leader you will need to get familiar with this term as it is not going away anytime soon – if ever! This is responsible for the change in attitude towards work, and in turn business leadership. For certain industries this constant and unpredictable change magnifies that traditional, outdated business approaches to management and leadership, some of which originate from the industrial revolution, are no longer adequate to enable a business to thrive. The stability and security once provided by an employer can no longer be offered meaning other values are relied upon and required to inspire and motivate a workforce. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
What we are seeing is a real shift in the purpose behind an employee seeking a particular employer or company. It is no longer solely focused on seeking out an established business for financial security. Sure, security still registers as important for some and yet there is an expectation now for alignment with a person’s personal values and purpose, a desire to belong to the right tribe. A tribe to enable the person to be positively motivated, encouraged and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. A tribe that also allows them to live a full life away from work. Let’s look at a literal definition of Leadership: Someone who has a clear vision of a better world, with a problem or pain solved, then able to articulate and communicate that vision to other people and inspire them to change and follow them on a journey. Moving forward a business leader will need the ability to clearly communicate their vision and purpose to succeed in business. Not much changes here, however the big shift is that there is necessity to have flexibility of communication not only for customers but also the individuals you motivate and lead within your business. This can be framed as leading with emotional intelligence. This form of leadership can only be consistently achieved if the Leader is operating from a place of self-awareness. Awareness of their own emotional states coupled with the ability to control their own emotional state. Then, and only then, are you able to be in a position to understand other people’s emotions and motivations in order to lead them. Without this style of leadership, you might find it hard to consistently attract, lead and retain talent for your business in the future. So, before we react to the issues we face, focusing on employees, we need to proactively focus on the leaders. Give them the tools to operate from a sound mental state which will allow them to have a greater impact on those they are responsible for. Let’s help Leaders become better leaders! www.7pm2.com

How to create a fantastic employment proposition Now is the time for businesses to evaluate their employee proposition as we transition back into the workplace post pandemic. A new report found that a third of workers could leave their job if employers do not continue to provide flexible working beyond the pandemic. Businesses now risk their employees feeling dissatisfied and in today’s competitive job market, the cost of this in recruitment and retention terms far outweighs the cost of employee satisfaction. With the end of restrictions in sight, increased confidence will see a spike in employees’ changing roles. There has been a temporary shift in employee mindset during the pandemic; job security has become more valued than job satisfaction. However, employers must turn their attention to how they can retain talent when employees become confident about the security of employment, the job market and focus again on job satisfaction. Employers must prepare themselves for the fact that demand for talent is and will continue to increase rapidly in the coming months, resulting in aggressive hiring and a rise in salaries. The employer brand is the identity of a company as an employer of choice. Establishing an internal and external employer brand requires an understanding of both employee and the company’s needs and desires. Satisfying current employees as well as getting the attention of new talent is key. Answering questions such as what the company’s strategic objectives are, what the employee’s career objectives are, why do people stay with the company and why do people leave will help to generate the Employer Value Proposition (EVP). The EVP fundamentally describes: ‘why work ‘here’ versus somewhere else?’ and is the set of unique employer offerings that are considered valuable to top talent. If you would like support understanding or developing your EVP or have questions about your current retention or attraction plans, please get in touch with a member of the ViewHR team today. with Frettens Solicitors On 10 June, the judgment was released confirming that the Employment Appeal Tribunal had upheld Maya Forstater’s appeal that the original tribunal panel was wrong to determine that her beliefs were not ‘worthy of protection in a democratic society’. The EAT had to decide whether Ms Forstater’s beliefs on transgender rights meet the definition under section 10 of the Equality Act 2010. In the ruling, Mr Justice Choudhry recognised that for a belief to not fall within this definition means that an individual may be denied fundamental rights to free speech and belief. Courts are obliged to consider this in making decisions. The EAT were clear to add to the judgment that: The Tribunal is not adopting a position on the transgender rights debate; Cases involving harassment of and discrimination towards transgender people remain an issue to be determined on their facts by the Employment Tribunal in line with the Equality Act; Transgender people remain protected by the Equality Act, whether by section 7 (gender reassignment) or otherwise as appropriate; and Employers and service providers remain able to provide safe working environments for transgender people free of harassment and discrimination. It’s clear that this judgment does not allow a free-for-all approach to manifestations of beliefs in the workplace. The effect of this judgment in law, is only that Ms Forster’s belief was capable of falling within s10 of the Equality Act. A Tribunal is yet to determine if she was actually discriminated against. “I do not believe this makes it more problematic for employers to address internal workplace disputes. Ultimately, there will be a conflict between an individual’s identity and the beliefs of another and the employer retains a duty to both.” You can read this article at length on our brand-new website, just go to frettens.co.uk/ site/media-centre/ Contact Information: Chris Dobbs Phone: 01202 499255 Email: cdobbs@frettens.co.uk
Why is there such a candidate shortage for jobs? With many employers and certainly all recruitment agencies locally feeling the pinch trying to find staff for both temporary and permanent roles, Helen Stacey – MD of Aspire Jobs explains the issues in the current marketplace. “The employment market across the UK has proved to be very resilient as we approach the easing of restrictions. There are now a lot of temporary and permanent jobs out the in the marketplace but with a shrinking candidate pool it is becoming increasingly hard to fill those roles. This is hugely frustrating for both agencies and employers as it will stifle growth. There are a few key reasons for this that you need to be aware of: • The Jobs market has picked up across most industry types • Lack of confidence in the economy causing people to think really hard before applying for new roles • Furlough scheme – whilst it’s been amazing it’s really starting to hold back the employment market – if you are employed currently and move jobs, you won’t be entitled to furlough if anything happens • Lack of EU Workers – a lot of workers from the EU have returned to their home countries during 2020 and now, due to new regulations, are struggling to come back into the UK • Benefits culture – controversial I know but universal credit applications are not being made to apply for roles Helen continues – “according to the most recent data from The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) which is the governing body for the recruitment industry in the UK we see: • • • •

I would add that if you aren’t ready to recruit (i.e. you may be going on holiday) then don’t even advertise now. You need to be able to move quickly and react IMMEDIATELY as candidates are moving so quickly – sometimes within a day of applying for a role. I have found my job has become more of a coach and am constantly coaxing candidates who may be understandably nervous about moving jobs. Don’t get me wrong there are people out there and we are making placements but it’s taking longer and is becoming harder. It’s actually great news for the economy that the jobs market is booming – long may it continue” “I’m happy to chat to anyone who wants further information on the local employment market and can be contacted on 07974 429217 or email helen@aspirejobs.co.uk” www.rec.uk.com/our-view/news/pressreleases/permanent-staff-appointments-riserecord-pace-pandemic-restrictions-easefurther-may www.aspirejobs.co.uk

Busting all your live chat myths:
Is it time to reconsider your digital communication channels? Your customers don’t want to be kept on hold whilst listening to fairly terrible music. They want their questions answered now, so email is no good. Audiences have made it clear that what they really want from a business is immediacy… and with live chat, you can offer that. 41% of people expect to see a live chat on your website. This percentage gets even higher for mobile users, with over half of people expecting to find some sort of instant communication service. Since the ‘70s, live chat has been growing in popularity. Businesses from numerous industries, all over the world, are embracing the leading digital contact method for online customers. If customer service matters to you, live chat should be top of your list. So why are so many small businesses not utilising this immediate communication channel? Well there are a lot of myths putting business owners off. We’re here to bust them and tell you exactly what you can expect after installing a live chat on your website. Top 4 Live Chat Myths First thing’s first, any business can take advantage of live chat. Whether you’re a huge eCommerce company or an independent accountant, this service will benefit your customers. So let’s talk about some of the reasons you might be against the idea... #1 Live Chat is Controlled by a Scripted Robot False. While there are different products and options available, chatbots aren’t the only way you can utilise live chat on your site. Some people like to use an automated message to get the conversation started, others like to be fully in-control of the communication they’re having with their customers. Most live chat software offers a mobile app which sends any messages that come through straight to your phone. It has never been easier to personally respond instantly to any messages that come through. Chatbot or no 36

chatbot, we’ll leave it up to you to decide how you want to operate your live chat. #2 You Have to be Online 24/7 So you understand that your chat doesn’t have to be controlled by a robot, but what about when you want to switch off in the evening? One thing that puts business owners off the idea is the thought of live chat messages pinging to their mobile out of office hours. That’s understandable. No one wants that. Again, most of the available software allows you to allocate your business hours. When you’re at your desk, you’ll receive the notifications and be able to respond in real time. When you’re putting your feet up in the evening, the messages will divert to your chosen email address. #3 Live Chat Installation is Too Expensive One of the top concerns, particularly with small businesses, is cost. Luckily, live chat is one of the cheapest and most cost-effective options when it comes to digital communication channels. Depending on the features your business needs, you might find that there is no monthly fee associated with your live chat at all. The only cost to your business will be installation of the software on your site… unless, of course, you’re a Dorset Chamber member and want to take advantage of free installation on any Wordpress website. #4 No One Uses Live Chat The stats in the introduction do enough to bust this myth. Your customers do use live chat (when it’s available). Almost half of your visitors expect you to offer it. Yet, while 90% of businesses agree that they need social media to offer better customer service, only 9% of businesses are using live chat. /company/dorset-chamber/
More than three quarters (79%) of visitors prefer using live chat to communicate with businesses. Think about it. If you’ve got a question about a product, want a quote for a service or have a general customer enquiry wouldn’t you want a response immediately? Remember, people won’t wait for your response if it’s urgent. Why Your Business Needs Live Chat Okay so all of your live chat myths are busted. Hopefully, you’re warming to the idea of installing one on your website. Just in case you aren’t convinced, here are a few more statistics that are impossible to argue with. Does your business care about and want to improve customer satisfaction? Live chat is the best communication tool to make that happen. A study by SuperOffice in 2020 found that live chat had an 82% satisfaction rating, compared with only 61% for email and 44% for phone. Perhaps your customer satisfaction is at an all time high, but you want to increase sales and generate more leads. I’m sure you already know what I’m going to say… A 2021 study by Reve found that customers who engaged with a business via live chat were 82% more likely to make a purchase! It’s difficult to argue with numbers like that. So if you want to increase customer satisfaction whilst reaching your businesses sales goals, you need to seriously consider getting a live chat installed on your website. As always, Digital Storm are on hand to get your live chat installed and talk to you about the new array of features at your fingertips.

How to find your lost pensions We are increasingly accruing workplace pension pots and then losing trace of them: how can you track down your money? If you’ve worked for more than one company during your career, then it’s likely that you’ve paid into several different workplace pensions. What happens to our pensions when we leave? They’re all out there, waiting to be claimed. Pension Tracing Service How do you track down your lost pension pots and what to do once you find them? Go to the gov.uk Pension Tracing Service at www.gov.uk/find-pension-contactdetails . You can also call 0800 731 0193 or contact them by post. You will need the names of companies who have employed you. This will work even if the company no longer exists and you can get the name a bit wrong and it will give you closest matches. Note that the service will not tell you whether you have a pension, or what its value is. What it will do is tell you the name and contact details of who’s running the company pension scheme. What can you do with previous workplace pensions? So, once you’ve found your pensions, what do you do next: can you cash in a pension from an old employer? With any pension, you can’t access the holdings until you’re 55. For small pension pots, you might just want to encash them once you reach this age. Many of us will also want to know what our pensions are invested in and whether this reflects our values. This is where a professional adviser is really invaluable. They can ascertain whether your pensions are working hard to achieve your goals and objectives. Funding available for Dorset employers to train and re-engage staff after lockdown Dorset businesses can access funded training to develop staff and aid their recovery from the Coronavirus Pandemic as part of the Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) programme which Locomotivation deliver in Dorset as part of a network of training providers. This funding could be used to enable businesses to re-engage staff, some of which may be returning from a long period of furlough, by accessing fully funded, short to medium term qualifications and training. Jon Baglow, SSW Programme Manager at Locomotivation, says: “We are delighted that Skills Support for the Workforce funding is available to assist businesses to help their staff re-engage or even in some cases refresh their skills after what has been a very difficult time since the pandemic started”. “For instance, in Dorset we know the Leisure, Tourism and Hospitality Industry has been hit particularly hard over the past year and with this programme we could support new or returning staff by offering fully funded level 2 certificates in Hospitality, Professional Cookery, Leisure Operations and Fitness Instructing over the coming months. These are short courses that shouldn’t take more than 6 months to complete.” The Skills Support for the Workforce programme launched in 2019 and helps support small and medium-sized businesses in Dorset to upskill their employees with training courses and qualifications to grow their business and boost the local economy. The general aims of the programme as well as the achievement
of certificates and awards are progression outcomes including apprenticeships, further education or progression within their work such as a promotion, increased pay or responsibility. Ian Girling, Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber added: “We think this is an excellent programme and we very much encourage businesses and employees to take advantage of this opportunity. As we look to the future, a skilled workforce is fundamental to the growth of our economy.” Locomotivation has been a delivery partner for this programme in the county since the beginning and feels that the need to support and engage staff has never been greater, given the disruption to working life over the past year. These opportunities aim to help businesses and staff to get back into the flow of their roles and start the long recovery. Following successful delivery, the programme has been extended to March 2023 along with additional funding to that already secured for Dorset employers. The programme is managed by Serco and is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). A broad range of certificates as well as bespoke in-house training packages can be put together in discussion with Locomotivation and can be developed to suit individual business needs across multiple industries. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Importing problems on the horizon for 1st July
#GetBusinessDone
Is there a huge headache for UK importers on the horizon with Postponed VAT, Duties and Declarations delayed until 1st July? International Trade Specialist, Frances Fawcett works with importers and exporters and there is cause for concern. Here, she explains why. The story so far… The impact of Brexit and the end of the transition period on 31st December has been widely felt and widely reported. Many of the niggles and challenges that we all saw in January have calmed down and goods are flowing more smoothly. It has taken some time, it has taken all parties getting to grips with new processes and, unfortunately, led to some businesses discovering new costs to doing business with EU suppliers and customers. Some of these are direct costs, other costs are in terms of time and administration. However, most regular exporters will probably have reached an understanding of the processes that are now required. I’d like to say that importers have reached the same clarity, but I fear not. This is because, whether they realise it or not, they haven’t been as exposed to some of the realities because of schemes in place to make things easier. Naturally we welcome these schemes, but they can sometimes leave things hidden and it’s critical that importers are aware.
2. Was the import declaration correct? •
You must check information such as goods value, Commodity Codes and Country of Origin because these are used to calculate the import fees due, and you will want them to be calculated accurately.
•
It is possible to submit your own declarations, but most businesses use someone else to deal with customs for them. Customs Agents are extremely busy post-Brexit but fortunately this is a service provided by most Chambers of Commerce, so you may wish to start there.
Duties What do I need to do about it? For all goods that you have imported from the EU since 1st January 2021: 1. Check that you know the Country of Origin of the goods you have purchased. •
Delayed import declarations
Your suppliers should include this on their invoices, but you must check. Not all EU businesses were ready for the end of the transition period so may not have updated their documents.
What is it? Recognising that considerable changes might be needed post-Brexit and the end of the transition period, HMRC announced that importers could defer import declarations. All goods coming into the UK from overseas must enter the country with an import declaration. This was already the case for imports from outside of the EU and it is now also true for imports from the EU from 1st January 2021. In July of last year (2020), HMRC announced that UK importers could defer declarations until 1st July 2021. This was welcome news and offered a period of 6 months before declarations would be required However, traders are obliged to record goods in their own records so they can provided the information to HMRC later. There is also an obligation to account for duties and VAT, but more on that later.
2. You will also need to know the Commodity Code of the goods that you have imported.
What do I need to do about it?
1. Use the Commodity Code to verify whether import VAT applies. • It does apply to most goods at 20%.
For all goods that you have imported from the EU since 1st January 2021: 1. Has an import declaration been completed? • Transporters sometimes submit declarations if asked as part of the service they provide so you will need to find out if this was the case. If no one asked them to, they almost certainly didn’t. If an import declaration hasn’t been completed, ensure you have all the records you need about the goods you have imported. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
•
Again, you can check your supplier invoices, but you will also need to satisfy yourself that, if a Commodity Code is given, it is accurate.
•
If none is given, you will need to determine the codes using the UK Trade Tariff.
3. If you do discover that you now have duties to pay, consider opening a Duty Deferment Account with HMRC. •
Opening an account is free of charge and cheaper than using a transporters deferment account as no fees apply.
Postponed VAT Accounting What do I need to do about it? For all goods that you have imported from the EU since 1st January 2021:
2. Access your Postponed VAT import statement. •
You will need your normal Government Gateway user ID.
•
Statements show postponed VAT unless customs declarations were delayed.
•
Note that statements are only available for 6 months – make sure you download and retain them!
Import VAT payable in the UK can be recovered by VAT registered businesses so although there is an administrative process here, there may not be a cost to your business. Do you know if a declaration has been made on your import? The Incoterms® rule determines whether you (the importer/buyer) or your supplier (the seller) are responsible for import procedures when goods arrive in the UK. Any rule other than DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means that you, the buyer, are responsible. So, unless you are buying under DDP, you will need to make sure an import declaration is made. I recently met a business with an EU supplier taking care of the whole shipment to their door, so they assumed that included the import declaration. The Incoterm® rule quoted was EXW which is not suitable for an international trade transaction and clearly wasn’t the correct rule as the buyer had organised none of the shipment. They therefore had no idea whether an import declaration had been completed and could probably assume it hadn’t. Could import VAT be sitting waiting to be included on your next VAT return without you realising? PVA works so seamlessly that many transporters are assuming traders are using it – why wouldn’t they? There could, therefore, be a host of transactions sitting on a monthly statement that you didn’t even know existed. But surely someone will be catching this as the goods cross the border into the UK? This is a very dangerous assumption and I have seen enough to know that isn’t the case. The UK has taken a “low touch” approach to ease the changes faced by businesses after the end of the transition period. That means that just because the goods have arrived as expected, you cannot assume that all the correct processes were followed.

Pre Covid 19 - it was estimated that nearly 70 million days were lost each year to staff absence caused by stress, depression and anxiety - costing the UK economy in excess of £70 billion per year. Given the measures the Government has taken recently – lockdowns, work from home, furlough, social distancing - it seems that the mental health impact upon employees in all sectors has been potentially brutal and remains long lasting. Around 1 in 5 (21%) adults experienced some form of depression in early 2021; this is more than double that observed before the pandemic (10%) (ONS). With the ongoing impact of COVID-19 yet to be fully understood by business leaders, utilising training to ensure staff have adequate support for their mental health and wellbeing would seem both time critical and of vital importance. 60% of employees say they’d feel more motivated and likely to recommend their organisation as a good place to work if positive action was taken to support mental health and wellbeing. Investing in a fully supportive and comprehensive mental health support network for staff can also help to reduce staff turnover, sickness absence and presenteeism – a cost in underperformance estimated at around £605 per employee. At Weymouth College we work closely with Public Health Dorset – as a preferred training provider – to deliver Mental Health First Aid for Adults to a wide range of businesses and employers across Dorset, and will be adding Mental Health First Aid for Youth to our training portfolio in the coming weeks. We have a team of 16+ trained Mental Health First Aiders onsite to listen to, reassure and support staff and adult learners across campus and we provide our staff with an accessible programme of wellbeing days, free fitness activities and supportive mental health and wellbeing newsletters. OnBuy delivers a little magic to the homes of vulnerable children with a magic show and DIY gift sets Dorset-based OnBuy.com has spread a little magic to The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity by donating a total of 100 magic trick kits to families the Trust cares for. On delivery of the kits a magician performed a virtual magic show for the whole family to attend. The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness, and the magic kits were distributed to families under the Trust’s care in Dorset and Hampshire as well as in the northwest of England – the respective birthplaces of OnBuy and its CEO, Cas Paton. These regions provided OnBuy with a perfect opportunity to give back to the local communities it’s connected with. Cas Paton, founder and CEO of OnBuy, said: “The past year and a half has been challenging to say the least, so we jumped at the chance to bring a touch of magic to families that need it most. With millions of products at our fingertips, we were inclined to support local families in a unique and interesting way. The donation of
these kits, along with the show from a Dorset-based magician, gave us that opportunity and the morning of wizardry and illusion certainly brought a smile to both the kids’ and parents’ faces! ” The families under Rainbow Trust’s care have predominantly been shielding throughout the pandemic due to the complex conditions of their children, so a magic show was hosted over Zoom to bring the experience to the comfort of their homes and to ensure all families in both areas were able to take part. The show took place in the OnBuy offices based in Poole on Saturday 19th June. To donate to Rainbow Trust, please visit www.rainbowtrust.org.uk/donate
New type of bugs found in gardens The move to home working in garden offices is creating major security risks, according to a leading cyber security company. C3IA Solutions, which is headquartered in Poole, Dorset, said business rivals can more easily insert listening devices into these remote spaces. While conducting sweeps in clients’ homes they became aware that outside garden offices had not been captured in the scope of work. Initially during lockdowns, the major cyber threat was because company computers had been taken from offices and their security not necessarily reconfigured for homeworking, leaving them open to hackers. Now, with many companies abandoning offices and moving permanently to remote working, new risks are presenting themselves. A survey by Moneypenny has shown that around four per cent of home workers do so from garden offices, which is tens of thousands of people. This figure is only growing, with shed providers reporting a huge increase in orders as people prepare to work from home full time. Matt Horan, co-founder of C3IA Solutions, said: “Sometimes people are more relaxed about security at home than they are in the office because they are always there. “But garden offices do present increased risks. Firstly the physical security can be weak. They are often made of wood and can be broken into easily. “They can be located in the garden away from the householders and often not covered by the home’s security systems or CCTV. “Conversations inside them can be easily overheard, and it is simple to plant listening devices. “The surveillance devices are extremely cheap, /company/dorset-chamber/
small and powerful and you’d be surprised how easy it is to plan them. “Usually we carry out Technical Surveillance Counter Measures in large office blocks and on superyachts – and we work all over the world. “Many of our staff are ex-military and have high levels of security clearance so we work in some sensitive locations. “But this type of bug-sweeping work is becoming more common in business and the move to home offices is seeing us push to get these outbuildings captured in our scope of work to mitigate the risks to our clients. “We are able to survey the entire security and advise on how to reduce threats – and a surveillance sweep takes a short time in a singleroom environment. “Those who have called us in suspect that private conversations or information has leaked and want to make sure it never happens again. “Planting listening devices sounds a bit like something from a film, but it is very now tempting in business as a way to gain extremely valuable information for little cost and risk.” www.c3ia.co.uk

New campaign “Light On” shines a light on mental health across Dorset
FOCUS ON
recruitment with Mploy Staffing Solutions
Light On is a life-changing campaign launching across Dorset to tackle the stigma of talking about mental distress and emotional struggle – particularly among men. A network of organisations including local businesses, the public sector, and charities including Dorset Mind have joined forces to build mental wellbeing together and put an end to men dealing with mental health difficulties alone. Light On urges men to go beyond banter and talk openly about how they are feeling and whether they are coping. It aims to train champions and ambassadors to spread this message across the whole of Dorset reaching men where they work, exercise, socialise and live. Local businesses will be encouraged to join the campaign as it gains momentum to share the message to ‘turn your light on’ and give permission to someone to have a conversation about mental health. Andrew Coleman, founder of Light On says, “It is time to put an end to the silent struggle among men because of the stigma about talking when you’re not coping very well. This silence is leading to pain, suffering and suicide - and it has to stop. This campaign will save people’s lives because it will make it OK for people to have a conversation and ask for help. It will transform the way Dorset people, men in particular; deal with mental health and mental health difficulty. We want as many people as possible to share our message and to get involved. We want thousands of people to ‘turn their Light on’ with us.” Andy is one of a group of men who met through local charity Dorset Mind and wanted to do more to help other men who may be struggling. All these men have personal experience of the difficulties and damage caused by mental health problems, with many of them losing friends or colleagues to suicide. Ty Temel, Owner of Halo Bournemouth comments, “A year ago we started talking about how we could stop this wave of distress amongst men in Dorset that is leading some to take their own lives. It’s great that this campaign coming to fruition – as the start of a larger piece of work. There are so many of us who have lain awake at 3am wondering how much longer we can cope and not knowing where to turn. We wanted to create a campaign that showed people that it’s OK to talk, it’s OK to say you’re not coping well and it’s OK to get help.” The Light On strategy was built using panels of men across Dorset who came together to share how they felt. They helped to shape the campaign’s focus on making more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
sure that men knew how to talk as well as when to talk. Training and workshops will be offered in later phases of the campaign. Importantly, they will be encouraged to have courageous conversations that go beyond everyday banter. Marianne Storey, CEO at Dorset Mind says, “This is such a vital campaign for people in Dorset, particularly at this time as we recover from the Covid19 pandemic. Even more people than ever are struggling with mental distress and it is essential that we create a county that is open and compassionate about talking about it. I believe that Light On is going to save lives. If enough people get involved and turn their ‘Lights On’ then more people can come forward and ask for help. And if we all play our own vital role in this campaign then we can all contribute to preventing distress and ultimately suicide. We must not give up until everyone has the help they need.” A survey is being carried out by Bournemouth University to find out what men in Dorset feel about their mental health - and what might be stopping them seeking help. The findings will be used to help the Light On team further develop their campaign. It’s set to run for 5 years across Dorset and is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of people. Local businesses such as Osprey, AFC Bournemouth and BCP and Dorset Councils are already on board and the organisers are expecting many more to sign up online as word spreads across the county. www.lightonmh.uk

Pressure on Pay Rates Recruitment is back with a bang! After over a year of relative inactivity, the gradual easing of lockdown has brought greater certainty across the local business community, and it seems everyone is in the mood for recruiting. This is great news and proves that the economy is finally on the path to recovery; however contrary to popular belief the available candidate market across all sectors is as tight as I have known in over 20 years in recruitment and this is making recruitment challenging to say the least, and we as recruiters are having to find new and innovative solutions and investing in additional resources. Every day for the last few months I have been having conversations with existing and prospective clients about recruitment plans, and I have been working hard to dispel the myth that there are great candidates on the market who are desperate to take opportunities for low pay rates. The good news is there are still candidates out there looking for work, but it is a sellers’ market, and to attract these people we are going to have to come up with standout product offerings in terms of pay rates!! With the annual Christmas recruitment drive just around the corner, those that choose not to will be left behind Only time will tell if this shortage of staff can be attributed to the furlough scheme, 12-months of lockdown or post-Brexit Britain; irrespective of the reasons why, the fine art of recruitment is as challenging as ever for companies and agencies alike and this is placing ‘Pressure on Pay Rates’ more than ever before. The FT gathered data on more than 4,000 European companies. The top 300 ‘Climate Leaders’ achieved the greatest reduction in greenhouse gas emission intensity between 2014-2019, measured according to tonnes of carbon emissions per €1 million of revenue. The figures show that Go-Ahead cut its emissions intensity by 7.5% every year from 2014-2019. This has also over a period of
significant international growth, with the company beginning operations in Germany, Ireland and Norway, as well as expanding in the UK. The group is one of only two bus and rail operators in Europe to make the list. Go-Ahead is the largest electric bus provider in the UK and has committed to run a zeroemission bus fleet by 2035. In addition, all Go-Ahead’s UK premises – including rail stations and bus depots – are powered by renewable electricity such as solar, wind and hydro power. All companies on the shortlist had to have a CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) rating of at least ‘B minus’. Go-Ahead received ‘A minus’

The Group has pioneered other innovative technology, such as air filtering buses, which clean particulate matter from the air, and geofenced buses that automatically switch to zeroemission in city centre areas with poor air quality. Katy Taylor, Go-Ahead’s Chief Customer & Strategy Officer said: “We’re pleased that GoAhead has been recognised for cutting carbon emissions. We will continue to ensure our buses, trains, depots and assets are as sustainable as possible – for the good of the planet and our passengers.” “However, we can all play our part in helping reduce emissions further. We need people to switch their journeys away from the car and to choose walking, cycling and public transport instead. That will have the biggest impact on reducing the UK’s overall carbon emissions.” www.morebus.co.uk

Fantastic passwords and where your children can find them How witches, wizards and superheroes can help your kids stay safe from cyber-villains, plus other parenting hacks to encourage your children to use secure passwords While many of today’s parents grew up during an age where the internet and the world wide web were just in their beginnings, for today’s kids the virtual world is all but inseparable from the real one. That, of course, presents its own set of challenges for parents to tackle, such as how to teach their offspring proper cybersecurity habits, without it seeming like too much of a boring and tedious task. None is more important than teaching them how to protect their online accounts since they’re likely to create quite a few of them. So, teaching them proper password hygiene early on will carry through into their adult lives. But since you’re going to be dealing with children it’s important to make the lessons accessible, understandable, fun, and easy to remember. To mark World Password Day, which takes place on the first Thursday of every May, we looked at some ways you can make password hygiene for kids fun. Passwords are fun you say? Passwords are the first line of defense keeping anyone unauthorized from having access to your precious data. And while many people might agree that creating a strong and secure password is a no-brainer and everybody should do it, multiple statistics, surveys, and breaches have shown that hardly anybody follows this advice. You need not look further than the annual lists of the most common passwords, which are consistently topped by poor password choices, such as “12345” and “password”. Now, should you show the passwords on the list to your kids, they’d probably call them funny and easy to remember. Funny? Maybe. Easy to remember? Sure. Dangerous? Definitely! But that’s not a habit you want to foster. Instead, you can show them how to avoid the common pitfalls of password creation and teach them how to do it properly with a fun twist. You can start off by telling them that passphrases are a lot safer and you
can make a game out of creating one. This could involve incorporating an inside joke that only the family knows into the passphrase or aspects from their favorite books or films, for example “MasterYodaIs0.66MetresTall!”. As you can see it includes all the characteristics of a good passphrase – length, a combination of upper- and lowercase letters, special characters, and numbers. Alternatively, you could also combine a number of things they like together, such as their favorite book and food – “HarryPotterAnd5DinoNuggies!”. One key thing to remember to tell your kids is that they should never share their passwords with anyone because passwords should always remain secret. Gotta remember them all? Now that you’ve taught your children how to create a unique and strong passphrase it’s important to keep in mind that throughout their lives, they will be creating countless online accounts. And unless you want to burden them with creating a unique one each time and then remembering it, which will be nearly impossible as the passwords pile up, you’ll have to introduce a solution that will simplify the process. Enter the password manager, an application specifically designed to store all your login credentials in an encrypted vault and to generate complex passwords for you. This means that your kids won’t need to keep creating, memorizing, or filling out complex unique passwords, for their online accounts; the manager will do it for them. All they will need to remember is that one unique master passphrase you came up with together.
Multifactor authentication the undercover spy way By now your children should have their accounts secure and password management down to a tee. However, to keep their accounts safe, it is necessary to add an extra layer of security. That’s where multifactor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA as it is more commonly known), comes in. Generally speaking, one of the most common 2FA factors used is automatic text messages that you receive whenever you try to log into an account. Unfortunately, it by far is not the safest since mobile numbers can be spoofed and text messages can be intercepted. Therefore, it’s better to opt for one of the safer methods, such as an authenticator app or a hardware solution such as authentication tokens. When it comes to either physical tokens or authenticator apps it’s easy to dress up their use in a fun way for kids to understand. They’ve probably seen a cartoon or kid’s movie where the protagonist is a schoolkid by day and superspy by night. So, you can explain that an authenticator app is a special tool that sends spies a unique code that only they have so they can access sensitive information that is classified as top secret.

Up your social media game
Battens' Family Solicitor appointed visiting fellow at Bournemouth University
The team at Dorset Tech have been discussing how businesses should up their game on social media. Founder Chris Ryu says: "If you are a business owner then it’s impossible to ignore the impact social media could have on your business. If you aren’t aware of this then you need to get acquainted fast as you could be missing out on potential new business. If you already spend money on advertising in say magazines, local papers or radio stations then it’s worth investing some of that budget into an online social media campaign. "Whilst it’s not the most complicated task to carry out, social media marketing does require you to work in a certain way so you encourage and entice people to read your posts, view your site and more. Here at Dorset Tech we know a thing or two about social media marketing so we thought we’d put a little brief together to educate you on the basics." Don’t Over Post This is one of the most important things to remember. Resist the temptation to just post for the sake of it. People will quickly get bored if you just post anything and everything. Once or twice a day is enough for most standard accounts. Obviously there are exceptions to this but this all depends on what industry you are in.
Use Humour For many they see social media as a form of escapism. A place to go to get away from the rigours of the day. For this reason alone always try keep humour involved, even in the lightest format. It’s a good idea to every now and then post some humorous posts also, just don’t post any offensive topics. If there are trending topics which are funny then try get involved and use hashtags.
Keep It Simple People quickly read through social media content. Usually whilst grabbing 5 minutes at work etc. So keep posts short and informative. There is a reason Twitter limits character lengths. Short and snappy posts will always be read more then long ones. If you are posting links to somewhere else then keep your post short but explain the links content. People browse social media they don’t tend to visit to read.
Run Competitions If you are a business or retail outfit then every now and then run competitions. For example if you own a Lodge in the country, run a share and like competition for one night s stay as a prize. You’ll be amazed at how quickly it will grow. People love a freebie and it’s so easy to like and share on social media that people will get involved. If you a retail outfit then you can do the same with a prize instead.
Encourage Participation People love a good debate so every now and then encourage a debate. Post an open ended question. Ask for opinions. Post choice questions, maybe even a poll. Keep it simple though and fun if possible.
Use Analytics Make use of the various free tools to give you feedback on people interaction with your posts. This way you can see what works, what people like and what doesn’t work. Most platforms give you access to free stats but you can also buy paid platforms too if you really want to get into the finer details of the activity your posts are generating.
Variety Is Good Don’t just post about your business or industry. Add variety to your posts, maybe some humour. Some posts can be images if you feel people would be interested. For example here at Dorset Tech we post about web design, general tech talk, geeky stuff too. We like to keep it varied and not all sales or business related. Use Hashtags Always include hashtags in your posts. Not too many though. We see some with 5/6 hashtags used which is too many. Always use the most relevant ones and try use keywords that people are searching for. See what’s trending maybe as you may be able to use these if they are relevant to your business. Don’t use popular hashtags for the sake of it to get traffic as it won’t convert if the wrong traffic. 2 or 3 hashtags is normally enough. Avoid long silly ones too like #hereismysitecomevisit etc. 1 or 2 keyword phrases are usually enough for a hashtag. 50
July 2021 | Dorset Business Focus
Pay Attention to Trends Keep an eye on what is trending, maybe there is something relevant to your business. For example if you make cakes there was a huge trending story recently about 2 rival big chains falling out over a chocolate caterpillar cake. This then became an online social media viral hit with some very funny posts back and forth.

Her ongoing commitment to the high quality education and practice that Bournemouth University provides to its student social workers, gives them real life understanding of practice and procedure in the courtroom, including Court scenarios and issues which affect how cases are litigated by the Local Authority. Explaining her role as visiting fellow, Georgina says: “We consider real life scenarios, considering dealing with vulnerable parents, parents with learning difficulties and remote hearings (which has been a topical issue owing to the Covid19 pandemic). My appointment and continued involvement with Bournemouth University is to equip its student social workers with the skills that they will need, when in practice. I hold Bournemouth University in high regard, so to be appointed as a Visiting Fellow is very much a privilege, as well as an exciting opportunity to be a part of shaping the social workers of tomorrow.” Bournemouth University said: “The Social Work department at Bournemouth University is proud of its links with practice to ensure that education on qualifying and CPD courses is not just current, but practice based. Our Senior Lecturer Tilia Lenz is leading the Law and Social Policy unit for BA and MA courses. To ensure a holistic preparation for statutory Social Work is offered to our students, we are very pleased about the close collaboration with Georgina Bacon.” www.battens.co.uk
Use Visuals Images can say a thousands words in a split second, they are perfect for social media, hence why Instagram is so popular and growing all the time. People love looking at other peoples photos and images. You don’t have to post images with every post but it does help, as long as its relevant. This month I wanted to celebrate the Highway Code turning 90 Research from the AA found nearly three quarters of drivers (72%) think the Highway Code should be updated with more information on smart motorways, according to research by the AA Driving School. Drivers were asked what changes they think should be made to the Highway Code this year as it marks its 90th anniversary. Six in 10 drivers (62%) said they wanted to see more information on electric vehicles, including charging infrastructure and road sign meanings. Currently there is no official section with guidance on electric vehicles, despite the government’s push for drivers to buy more ecofriendly vehicles. A further 60% said they wanted the Highway Code to include more guidance on behaving around vulnerable road users like electric scooters and cyclists. The latest government figures show the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured on Great Britain’s roads has increased by 8% since 2009. In 2019, cyclists accounted for 14% of casualties and 6% of road deaths in Great Britain. The Highway Code was introduced in Great Britain in 1931 when there were only 2.3 million vehicles on roads, but more than 7,000 people died in road accidents each year. According to the DVSA, the first edition of
the Highway Code did not mention the use of mirrors and it advised drivers to sound their horn when overtaking. The Highway Code is currently undergoing a review to improve road safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. Last summer, the AA submitted evidence to the review and broadly supported the government’s proposals, but shared concerns around the lack of clarity and guidance on some of the proposals. Earlier this year, the AA also submitted evidence to a separate review into plans to include guidance on smart motorways, one year after the government was first advised to do so by the Transport Secretary. Robert Cowell, Interim Managing Director of AA Driving School said: “Our research shows drivers want the Highway Code to be brought into the 21st century to keep up with the growing demand for electric vehicles, and concerns about education on smart motorways.
“Drivers in 1931 wouldn’t believe the ways in which road safety and technology has developed over the last 90 years. “We hope that with this milestone anniversary the Highway Code will keep up with the times and keep drivers safe and informed of the latest developments. If we want drivers to choose electric vehicles or feel safe around electric scooters, we need the Highway Code to guide them from the outset.”

Chris loses his hair for the HealthBus Charity the HealthBus provides a mobile health facility that travels to areas where people sleep rough, providing basic health care, a GP service and access to addiction and mental health support services. The service provision is designed to be appropriate and accessible, supporting people as they move away from rough sleeping. Their key to success and unique selling point, is that they take healthcare to people that are on the margins of society, disengaged and in many cases dehumanised by wider society. Apprenticeships are for people of all ages – whilst traditionally training was for those aged 16-24, this is no longer the case and it’s a great way of reskilling as you get older. Apprenticeships are available in most industries – The Institute for Apprenticeships has a catalogue of available job roles. Apprenticeships are for new and existing staff - Apprenticeships are available from Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) to Level 7 (Masters level) and can provide continuous development for staff throughout their working lives. Apprenticeships can be for degree educated students – if the Apprenticeship is materially different to the degree, funding is often available.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job with a structured package of training that allows employers to develop sector specific skills by either upskilling current employees or recruiting new ones.
•
86% of employers said they helped develop skills relevant to their organisation.
•
78% of employers said they helped improve productivity*.
•
74% of employers said they helped them improve the quality of their product.
Key Facts
•
An apprentice trains ‘off-the-job’ for 20% of their working hours – this could at your premises or as part of day release to a local training provider.
•
You’ll need to pay your apprentice at least £4.30 per hour for the first 12 months.
•
For large employers who have an annual pay bill of £3 million or more, they can use their Apprenticeship Levy Tax (which you’ll be paying whether you have apprentices or not), to pay for training and assessment costs. The government tops this up by 10%. You can then use these funds to pay your training provider.
How to set up an Apprenticeship
What about incentive payments?
To start your journey today visit –
•
https://findapprenticeshiptraining. apprenticeships.education.gov.uk/ What Funding is Available? •
For most SME employers, the government will pay 95% of training and assessment costs, meaning employers pay a balance of 5%. The value of the 5% will be determined by the type and duration of the apprenticeship. In certain cases, the government will pay 100% of the training costs.
In response to the Coronavirus pandemic, incentive payments have been increased to £3000 for new apprentices of any age, who join your organisation before the 30th September 2021 and £4000 for those aged 16-18 years or under 25 with an education or care plan. The incentives can be used as you see fit.

Dividing Pensions on Divorce Pensions on divorce can be complicated to value, and there are a number of things to think about when considering the division of pension pots says Trethowans Solicitors. It’s easy to overlook the pension assets when you’re faced with a divorce or breakdown of civil partnership, as there are so many other things to think about at that moment. As well as dealing with the immediate issues, such as where you, your children (if you have them) and your ex-partner will live and how you will meet your ongoing immediate expenses, it is also vital that you consider your position on retirement. Pensions can be a very valuable part of the ‘matrimonial pot’ (the assets that have built up during the marriage). When you divorce, if you do not consider the pensions properly you are unlikely to get a fair outcome and may find yourself in financial difficulty later in life. Pensions can be shared on divorce just like other assets and can sometimes be the most valuable asset that exists. They can be complicated to value so there are a number of things you ought to be aware of when starting to consider the pension pot. What do I need to consider when splitting a pension on divorce? The first step will be finding out how much the pensions are worth, which will mean requesting full information from your pension providers. You then need to exchange this information with your ex-partner and consider if you are going to need expert help from an actuary or financial planner on how they could be shared. It will be important to get expert assistance if one of the following situations applies:
•
The pensions add up to more than a cash equivalent value of £100,000
•
If there are any defined benefit pensions
•
If the pension values add up to less than £100,000 but make up a large percentage of the overall assets in the case
•
If any of the pensions are public sector pensions such as Armed Forces, Teachers, NHS or Police Federation – you could miss out on a lot if you just accept a cash equivalent valuation of a defined benefit pension
•
If you have defined contribution pensions with extra benefits – there are some pensions with guaranteed annuity rates for example that may make the true value of the pension higher than that which is indicated by the pension statement
•
There is a significant age gap between you and your ex
•
If you are considering offsetting capital for pension
•
If one of you has a serious medical condition diagnosed by a medical professional which is likely to impact on how long you are likely to live
•
Where there is a choice of pensions to share, as some pensions lose significant value when they are shared
How can pension assets be shared? There are three ways you can share pension assets: • Pension sharing order • Pension attachment order • Offsetting a share in pension for another asset You should seek legal advice to ascertain what would be the best option for your particular circumstances. You could seek to divide the pensions according to the income they will produce, which will be more suitable if you are older and/ or if you have significant pension funds. It will be important to think about what both your income needs will be when you retire. Or you could divide the pensions according to the cash equivalent valuations, which may be appropriate if the marriage has been short, or if the pension pot is not large enough to justify the cost of an expert working out the division needed to equalise your incomes in retirement. If you separated some time ago but did not dismiss your claims for a pension order with a financial consent order it may not too late to get some advice. Or if you are separating now and are not sure what to do about looking at the pension pot, please do not hesitate to contact the family team at Trethowans on 0800 2800 421 or www.trethowans.com.
Your unique space Becks Neale Designer & Brand Consultant asks if you think of your business as a garden? – a space bespoke to you, that you can create exactly how you want it. Plan & prepare the ground First off you need to put pen to paper and draw out your ideal space – in words and in sketch form, so you have something tangible to refer to, authentic to you. • What are your key values? • Who is it for? • How should it feel? Then prepare the ground ready to sow your main idea. This will likely include cutting back some ‘wild thorns’ and removing the ‘rocks and stones’ in the soil (caused by imposter syndrome). You have the tools you need. You are enough. Your talents, skills and values are what make you and your purpose unique and attractive. Test your limits. Work to your strengths. Remember you also have specialists around you to help you when you need them, to support and guide you with what they do best, freeing up your time to do what you do best. Sow one seed There is always that temptation to plant all of your ideas – for maximum instant impact – but believe me, hold back! Pop the other ideas in seed packets to revisit later. 54
July 2021 | Dorset Business Focus
I had so many ideas and things I wanted to do when I first started out. Each idea felt really connected with each other so they initially made sense working on at the same time, but in reality each idea had completely different needs: •
audience
•
'growing conditions'
•
amounts of exposure 'to sunlight' (in the spotlight)
To successfully grow, each individual idea needs a lot of consistent attention and nurturing. If you are growing lots of ideas all at once, your time and energy available for each one is diluted. The duplication of types of tasks is multiplied many times over as they each need something slightly different. For example identifying and learning the best platforms for reach and discovery. If you have very different audiences, what do they each need to know and hear? Think about your brand tone of voice, your ideal client’s interests, the types of information and follow up they need etc. Without ‘cloning’ yourself or developing a dedicated team to focus on each idea, you will likely end up completely overwhelmed and exhausted. Remember, your other ideas are never lost or forgotten – you have a system in place to safely keep your new ideas as and when they appear, /company/dorset-chamber/
ready to inspire you. You can revisit your seed packets of ideas in the future once your main idea is tested, adapted, working, established and flourishing. Focusing on one idea allows you to evolve and establish your brand over time. Keep working the ground. Don’t wait for ‘perfection’ to launch. Start sharing with others what you are creating early on; your vision of what you are working towards and why. Provide unique insights behind the scenes. It may inspire others to take action or even be the spark of something new.
