CELEBRATING DORSET’S THIRD SECTOR
ENHANCING YOUR BRAND THROUGH CHARITY
THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS CONFERENCE
Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone who has entered the Dorset Business Awards, part of our 2023 Dorset Business Festival. The awards have an expert independent judging panel which includes Anthony Woodhouse, Chair of Hall & Woodhouse, Cheryl Hadland, Founder and Chair of Tops Day Nurseries, Martin Edwards, CEO of Julia’s House, Gail Ninnim, MD of Ocean Automotive, Former Sunseeker and Lotus CEO Phil Popham, Chair of the British Chambers of Commerce Sarah Howard, Dorset LEP Chair Cecilia Bufton, Dr Lois Farquharson, Executive Dean of Bournemouth University Business School, and Nicola Newman, LSIP Lead and Board Member of Dorset Local Enterprise Partnerships and Kingston Maurward College.
The awards offer businesses an incredible opportunity for recognition with their customers, suppliers and partners and is tremendous in terms of staff morale. It’s no exaggeration when I say business owners tell me that winning a Dorset Business Award was one of the proudest moments of their life. The judging process
has already begun and finalists will all be invited to a very special Gala Dinner and awards ceremony as our guests in October when we will announce the winners. The awards are a great celebration of the fantastic businesses we have here in Dorset.
The awards are just one part of the wider Dorset Business Festival. Tickets for our conference are selling well, the Gala Dinner sold out on day one and the stands for the expo are also selling well. By popular demand, we have added an extra event, a Business Breakfast Festival opening event at Rick Stein’s in Poole on Monday 9th October with our guest speaker, renowned property expert Lucien Cook of Savills. Early booking is advised and you can see more information on the Festival on our website.
Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset ChamberFinding the right fit is incredibly important on both sides. The choice of charity will often lie within your business and the causes that have special relevance for you. However it is important that your due diligence extends beyond what is immediately available in marketing materials. It is helpful to check that the charity is registered with both the Charity Commission (although not all charities need to register) and with HMRC for gift aid purposes - this will allow the company to claim tax relief against donations.
The Charity Commission Register will tell you if a registered charity has consistently submitted its annual returns on time. It is advisable to review the latest annual reports and accounts. These documents should provide important financial and governance information and describe in detail how the charity delivers its purposes for the public benefit. You could also ask for relevant policies, such as safeguarding. This can help provide comfort that the charity is well-run, and that any potential future issues would be dealt with effectively.
The Register of Charities will also tell you about the charity’s structure - is it a trust, charitable company or a CIO (charitable incorporated organisation)? It is important to note that an unincorporated charity is not a legal entity with limited liability, so any form of agreement would have to be with its trustees.
There are specific rules relating to businesses who market goods/services on the basis that a charity will receive funding e.g. ‘10p on every purchase goes to X charity’. If a business
defined as a ‘commercial participator’ makes such a claim as part of a promotion, they must have a written agreement with the charity. The company must also make a ‘solicitation statement’ explaining how the fundraising will benefit the charity. These rules and other areas of fundraising regulation are outlined in the Code of Fundraising Practice overseen by the Fundraising Regulator. Although not a statutory body, it is good practice for all charities who fundraise in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to register with it. Sponsorships such as ‘charity of the year’ arrangements should also be underpinned by a written agreement and it is important that any payments relating to advertising and use of the charity’s brand are correctly treated for tax and VAT purposes. There are strict rules for charities carrying on a trade that does not fall within their primary purpose - see Charity Commission guidance CC35. For the business, sponsorship payments are different from donations but can be deducted from business profits as pre-tax expenses. Establishing a charity or foundation Charity partnerships become more complex where connected persons are involved. Should your business wish to set up a charity, it is likely that company employees and/or directors will sit on the charity’s board of trustees.
The trustees are the people with the general control and management of the administration of a charity, a responsibility that comes with a wide set of legal duties. All trustee decisions must be made solely in the interests of their charity, with a view
to effectively delivering its purposes. As such, charity trustees cannot personally gain from their position and must manage any conflicts of interests that arise. Unless there is a sufficient number of independent trustees, there may be an unmanageable conflict of interest for the charity when dealing with the business.
The Charity Commission’s Guidance for charities with a connection to a non-charity highlights the importance of the charity being able to operate ‘at arms’ length’ from the business. It is a good idea to have a written agreement between the two, setting out the relationship more clearly and ensuring that charitable resources cannot be used to subsidise the business in any way. This will also help trustees to demonstrate their independence, and that decisions are always taken in the charity’s best interests.

Supporting a charity can be a beneficial and enriching exercise for any business: it offers the corporate sponsor the opportunity to “give back” and “make a difference”, improving staff morale at the same time. If done successfully, this could be an important part of your ESG offering and enhance your brand.
New plans have been approved for a life changing hydrotherapy pool complex for adults with profound and life-long disabilities in Dorset.
It is a major milestone in Diverse Abilities £1million Splash Appeal to build the centre and its state-of-the-art therapy pool.
The development is due to be built within the campus of the charity’s Beehive Adult Centre in Manor Avenue, in Poole, which offers care and support for adults with complex needs.
David James Architects has been a supporter of Diverse Abilities for several years. David James has personally been involved on the panel to drive the Splash Appeal forward and as part of this drive DJA provided a free design service to deliver a much-needed state-ofthe-art therapy pool.

Over 1700 health and social care staff across Dorset have received new training to enable them to better support the autistic community.
The staff, who are all employed by Dorset Council, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, NHS Dorset, hospitals and community health providers took part in an autism training programme which is coproduced and co-delivered by Christchurchbased charity Autism Unlimited.
Autism Unlimited is a leading charity which provides education, training and supported living to children and young adults with autism from across the region.
Autism Unlimited has designed its training around the National Core capabilities
Framework for Autism (Supporting autistic people and/or people with a learning disability – Skills for Health) with two stages:
Understanding Autism, which is an e-learning course teaching learners what autism is and how the autistic community experience the world.
And Autism Acceptance, a face-to-face session which equips learners with strategies and techniques so they can help autistic people feel included, understood and supported.
From 1 July 2022 a new legal requirement was introduced by the Health and Care Act 2022 that all registered health and social care providers must ensure their staff receive
training in learning disability and autism appropriate to their role.
Claire Causley, training manager at Autism Unlimited, said: “Autism is a neuro developmental condition which means an autistic person’s brain works differently.
“Autistic people may act in different ways to others and can sometimes find it difficult to communicate or interact with unfamiliar people in public areas which can be too loud, busy or new to them.
“As a result, accessing important health, care, financial or other support can be a daunting and stressful experience.
“During Autism Unlimited’s training programme learners are introduced to a range of different communication techniques and shown how to adapt the environment from a sensory perspective to allow an autistic person time to process the important information.”

There will also be social and study spaces to allow students to meet and collaborate.
Phil Sayles, principal of Bournemouth & Poole College, said: “Bournemouth and Poole College’s degree-level courses focus on skills that will get students great jobs in sectors like engineering, digital, CGI and health. They are a vital and growing part of what the college
does. Our Degree Centre will provide a dedicated base for our higher-level students and provide excellent technical facilities for learning. “We offer a supportive approach to degree level study, with smaller groups and great support for students. Bus passengers in Dorset will continue to be able to travel on any single journey across the region for £2 or less until 31 October 2023.
Morebus signed up to the Department for Transport (DfT) initiativewhich restricts the cost of a single ticket - at the beginning of the year. An essential part of the Government’s Help for Households scheme, the fare cap was originally set to end on 31 March 2023 but has now been extended for the second time.
“I am delighted to confirm that Morebus will continue to offer the £2 fare cap - in line with the Government’s announcement that the initiative will be extended,” said Andrew Wickham, Morebus managing director.
“It will allow us to continue offering low-cost bus fares and it will help to protect many routes relied upon by local people.
“The aim, in the long term, is to encourage more people to shift their travel habits from using their cars to taking more sustainable methods of transport. One double decker bus has the potential to take up to 75 cars off our roads - and that can have a significant effect on congestion in Bournemouth, Poole, and the surrounding area.
“This summer, we are making significant improvements to the bus services we offer here - and have also extended our popular Breezer routes, with more open-top buses and a fresh new look.
“So, those looking forward to days out during staycations here on the beautiful south coast will be able to take full advantage of the £2 single journey fare cap.”

The Wessex District of the Sea Cadet Corps have been ‘showing their colours’, both literally and figuratively.
The Sea Cadet Corps is a national youth charity that enables young people between ages 10 and 18 to have fun, learn, and develop life skills through a wide range of on the water and off the water activities. Cadets, supported by committed and qualified volunteers, follow a similar ethos, training plan and rank structure to the Royal Navy.
Sea Cadets, Royal Marines Cadets, adult leaders, and supporters gathered for a unique
occasion, the presentation and dedication of a new Wessex District flag or colours. The ceremony took place in Boscombe Salvation Army, Bournemouth, in the presence of the Wessex District Officer Lt Commander (SCC) Lisa Grinter RNR and other district personnel.
The new Wessex Colours were provided in memory of Edward Franklin MBE, a greatly respected former Wessex District Officer, whose bequest made this possible. His daughter, Julia, along with family and friends, joined cadets for the ceremony conducted by Chaplain David Alton (SCC) RNR, who is the
District Chaplain and Commanding Officer (minister) of Boscombe Salvation Army.
Cadets between 10 and 18 years old from across Dorset and Hampshire demonstrated that they were as much at home with smartly attired formal ceremonial as they were with their adventurous waterborne activities. The colour party that took part in the ceremony demonstrated their award-winning skills, adding greatly to the occasion.

In recent years we’ve represented the concerns of businesses to the local councils, contributing to a significant cut in the cost of car parking charges. We played an important role in the establishment of the Weymouth BID, in whose operation we take a keen interest.
Building upon three decades of supporting local businesses, Poolebased Grapevine is taking the next step in the evolution of the company, bringing the team to the forefront as it becomes an Employee Ownership Trust this summer.
Now a full-service IT and communications support provider, Grapevine has come a long way from its early days as a reseller of mobile contracts in 1991. Many of today’s team have been a part of that journey, with 30 year and 25 year staff anniversaries taking place alongside this latest announcement from the company.
As an Employee Ownership Trust, ownership of the business will transfer from the founders to the broader team of 20 staff members, working across the South and South West. The scheme rewards those who have dedicated a substantial amount of time to the company as well as more recent additions, who have each contributed to Grapevine’s notable transformation.

AECC University College is taking an innovative approach to address labour shortages in the workplace by offering Health MOTs to companies and their employees. The Health MOTs, comprehensive health assessments, are designed to help employers identify and address health issues among their employees, ultimately improving productivity and reducing days lost through illness.
The current labour shortage is a growing concern for businesses across various industries. According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (2022), up to 46.5 million working days were lost in the UK in 2021 due to reasons including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental illnesses such as stress, among others. To combat this, companies need to take a
proactive approach in improving the health and wellbeing of their employees to protect against burnout, sickness, and absenteeism.
The Health MOTs offered by AECC University College include a range of assessments, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose concentrations. These assessments are carried out in their new £4.5m Integrated Rehabilitation Centre by highly qualified clinicians who provide personalised advice and guidance to help employees make positive lifestyle changes. This proactive approach to health management is essential in improving employee wellbeing, which in turn leads to a more productive and engaged workforce.

Team members from the independent family brewer, Hall & Woodhouse (H&W), came together to tackle local litter and clean the streets to celebrate the company’s annual Founder’s Day.
Across H&W’s managed pubs, over 200 team members followed tradition to collect as much rubbish and litter as possible to help encourage cleaner communities. The annual event is held to celebrate H&W’s Founder’s Day, the anniversary of the business’s founding in 1777.
Anthony Woodhouse, chairman of Hall & Woodhouse, said: “At Hall & Woodhouse, we treasure the relationship we have with local communities and love finding ways of giving back throughout the year. Founders Sweepers is a great day out that delivers our team a real sense of reward and pride. A feeling of community is a core element of the Hall & Woodhouse experience we aim to deliver across our estate of houses and honouring that on Founder’s Day is a privilege.
“We started the annual litter pick over 14 years ago and have since collected so much litter of all shapes and sizes; from high streets to residential areas, and from countryside to beaches. The team’s competitive nature to dispose of as much litter as possible is a great addition to the tradition.” www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk.

Dorset County Show has announced its chosen Charity of the Year is Dorset County Hospital Charity.
In what is set to be the largest investment in healthcare provision in West Dorset in 25 years, the hospital is planning to build a new Emergency Department (ED) and Critical Care Unit on the site of the former Damers First School. This will significantly improve the hospital’s capacity and transform the experience of patients and their families.
Dorset County Hospital Charity is running a £2.5M Capital Appeal to fund enhancements to the planned new Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit.
Nicki Ralph, chair of the region’s largest annual agricultural show, knows all too well how vital the critical care services at the local hospital are. Her farmer husband, Nic, was admitted last year with total kidney failure and sepsis. He spent nearly three weeks in a
coma in intensive care, 11 of those days on life support.
Nicki said: “This truly is a cause close to my heart. My family are indebted to the incredible support the hospital gave my husband who, without a shadow of a doubt, wouldn’t be alive
today without their unstinting help. All the staff were amazing. They left no stone unturned to find out the cause of my husband’s sudden deterioration.”

Church House were delighted to sponsor the President’s Charity Golf Day at Rushmore Golf Club in aid of the Eloise and Katie Plunkett Memorial Trust.
The Trust was set up in 2003 in memory of Eloise and Katie Plunkett, two young sisters who both died of cancer. It funds small
projects in England and Scotland that make a real difference to the lives of young people and supports causes which are important to the Plunkett family – particularly cancer and Parkinson’s Disease.
Organised by Alice Plunkett, the face of Channel 4 racing in memory of her sisters,
the day featured the great and good from the racing world. Just over £20,000 was raised, to the delight of Mrs Celia Plunkett, the girls’ mother, who attended the day.

O-IM has raised £3,790.36 for Forest Holme, the Poolebased hospice that provides palliative and end-of-lifecare and support to local people with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s, heart disease and respiratory illness. The firm held and participated in a series of events throughout the year including a recent charity quiz held at AFC Bournemouth to raise funds for the hospice.
The charity quiz was a huge success, with teams from local businesses and organisations participating in a funfilled evening. The event raised £1,858.72 for the hospice, which will help ensure that everyone in our community affected by life-limiting illness or bereavement gets the care and support they need, either at home or in its dedicated hospice facility.
Commenting on the success of the fundraising campaigns, Katie Land, business & marketing manager at O-IM said, “We are delighted to have raised so much money for Forest Holme. We are particularly passionate about supporting the local area and the hospice provides an invaluable service within our local community. We would like to thank all those who have participated in our events and have donated so generously”. www.o-im.co.uk
In the peak of summer, on 16th of June, a team of Preston Redman employees took their careers to new heights – to 1,345 metres to be precise. A year of practice hikes around the country culminated in an attempt at the Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon in 24 hours.
The team travelled to Scotland and ascended Ben Nevis in scorching sun and +27 degrees, with breathtaking views at the summit that spanned across the Highlands under the setting sun. Ben Nevis was conquered in 6.5 hours, after which the support team drove through the night to Scafell Pike.
Scafell Pike was met with much cooler temperatures, with the team completing the climb in just over 4 hours. A quick turnaround saw the team begin and successfully accomplish their final ascent of Snowdon, bravely descending the mountain in the darkness and completing the last 4k in a thunderstorm.
Fundraising has been in aid of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and the team were proud to have raised £6,400 for the charity.
Donations remain open until 17 July. You can support their invaluable cause by visiting www.dsairambulance.org.uk/fundraisers/prestonredman-3-peaks-challenge.
Debt recovery specialists, Diane Bantten from Acquit, shares her expertise on ways to minimise the risks of payment issues with clients and customers.
“The reality is that providing you prepare the ground before starting work for your client you minimise the risks of sailing into choppy water when it comes to payment.
“Do you ensure that you have a written contract to which your terms and conditions of business have been incorporated? As part of your onboarding process are you carrying out due diligence? Do you know who you are about to start working with?
“There are several things that you can do however, one of the best tools in your box should be access to Credit Reports. By looking at your potential client and establishing its status you can assess whether the company has a good trading history, whether there is any negative information – i.e. CCJs.
“As a member of Dorset Chamber you have free access to such a report – all you need to do is email Diane Bantten with details of the company registration number, company name
and provided it is a UK company then we aim to have a report in your inbox within 48 hours.
“What next? Ensure that your Credit Control procedures are strident and followed. There seems to be a trend for non-verbal chasing ... email reminders for payment are easily ignored. Far more efficient to pick up the telephone and try and establish why
Dorset’s Douch Family Funeral Directors hosted the prestigious Selected Independent Funeral Homes European Summer Conference (SIFH), from 8th - 11th June, at Christchurch’s Captain’s Club Hotel.
Delegates attended from locations including the US, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and all over the UK.
The conference served as a springboard for an exchange of ideas and best practices within the funeral industry. All attendees had the chance to tour the local area, courtesy of Douch Family Funeral Directors, a tribute to the unique location where they operate.
Nick Douch, managing director of Douch Family Funeral Directors and a former European chairman of SIFH, said: “We were honoured to host this year’s conference.
“SIFH has a rich history spanning more than 100 years old and while it started in the US, is now an international organisation.
“Member businesses are all family-owned and it really is fascinating to talk to funeral directors from other countries to learn and share new trends, best practices, and innovative approaches that shape our industry.”

This issue of Dorset Business Focus Magazine highlights some of the wonderful organisations who tirelessly operate in the third sector in the area.
Delivering vital support services and projects which provide positive impact across the length and breadth of the county, charities and not-for-profits are a vital part of the community and infrastructure in Dorset. But during these challenging times, amid rising costs they need your support more than ever.
The benefits of personal volunteering are well known - increased social interaction, self confidence and sense of belonging. Giving back really does make you feel good. But the benefits of supporting a charity are amplified when a business gets behind a cause as a team.
When a workplace unites to fundraise or support a charity it creates a focus point for the team. A shared mission, goal and opportunity to make a difference. It’s a powerful way to energise a company culture and to support team building. Whether it’s a one off-event, a sponsored challenge, or a series of activities run throughout the year, charity partnerships means the whole team can unite, have a role and be a force for good.
We have written several articles and posts on a range of wellbeing topics recently. The word ‘wellbeing’ can mean a variety of different things such as health, welfare, comfort and happiness.
However we choose to define ‘wellbeing’, a healthy and positive work environment can have a real impact on how we feel about other aspects of our life.
Employers can reinforce this at work, by offering access to benefits which support and promote health, such as health insurance, access to employee assistance programmes, gym memberships and cycle to work schemes.
It can stock vending machines with healthy snacks and drinks, ensure employees working areas have access to natural light, are well ventilated and have appropriate working stations. It can also educate and advise staff on taking regular breaks from their screens and encourage them to take lunch breaks, small changes can have a big impact.
As well as the physical environment we work in, it is important to consider the culture of the workplace. Training programmes and up to date, clear policies outlining what is (and is not) acceptable behaviour in the workplace help ensure consistency and can highlight an organisation’s commitment to employee wellbeing. Reviewing policies and procedures can be very beneficial when looking to introduce new initiatives or address any areas of concern.
Emma Starmer, Senior Employment Law and HR Advisor in the Employment team at Lester Aldridge. It is fitting that countries with whom we share much common history and values offer much for business growth through these new deals. By 2035, the Australia deal could benefit the economy by £2.3bn per year, and the New Zealand deal by £0.8bn per year over the long-term, with benefits likely across the UK.
Our defence and security partnerships with Australia have been greatly enhanced in recent years. And both of our partners are strategic allies in the region of the world with the highest levels of global growth for UK goods and services until the end of this decade and beyondAsia-Pacific. Those ties will grow once the UK’s accession to CPTPP is ratified over the next year.
Combined bilateral trade with Australia and New Zealand amounted to £17.6bn last year. Inward foreign direct investment stock from both countries into the UK is £16.6bn, and in the other direction of a combined £42.1bn in investment. These new agreements offer a step change to grow both our trade and investment links substantially, and procurement opportunities for UK companies in the Australia and New Zealand markets.
Both agreements enhance growth friendly long-term partnerships for the UK - zero-tariff trade on the vast majority of goods, removal of regulatory compliance barriers, co-operation on digital trade to boost services exports and e-commerce sales of goods, strong access to growing services markets in Australia and New Zealand. They also
offer reciprocal and generous business travel schemes, and welcome temporary worker and youth mobility schemes too - extended upwards to under 35s almost immediately with New Zealand, and due to be phased in over the coming years with Australia. These arrangements will allow 18-35 year olds from the UK to live and work in Australia and New Zealand for up to 3 years, and vice versa.
For business, trade agreements are only as good as the benefits which can be realised for businesses large, medium and small. That’s why the new Preference Utilisation Unit within Government will need to work closely with business to ensure maximum take up of these new trade preferences, and generate higher levels of exports in goods and services to Australia and New Zealand.
Business is ready to lead in forging closer links with our New Zealand and Australian counterparts. Not at the expense of our current trading relationships but to add to those. In a time of pessimism about global trade these agreements offer the prospect of a better future. It’s now time to roll up our sleeves and for business and government across our three nations to make it happen.
More information on the UK-Australia and UK-New Zealand free trade deals can be found on great.gov.uk which includes thematic guidance and sector specific explainers.
The UK’s trade deals with Australia and New Zealand came into effect on 31st May 2023 which marks the first entirely new trade deals which the UK has negotiated with key trading partners in the post-Brexit era.
