DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

Hello and welcome to the June edition of Dorset Business Focus. This month our lead story is the opening of Kingland in Poole, owned by Dorset Chamber members Legal and General. We think this is a really exciting development and as a Poole resident, I think this is great news for our town. Like so many places across the UK, Poole high street has suffered and this new ambitious and ground-breaking project has the potential to be a blueprint for town centres across the UK. Backed by a package of support from Legal and General, Kingland is now home to a wide range of small independent businesses including a design studio, gallery and a fishmongers. Kingland has breathed new life in to this part of Poole and we know that further exciting developments are planned within the Dolphin. Following the sad loss of Debenhams and the wider impact this would have had in the centre of Bournemouth, it’s also tremendous news to hear that the store will once again become a Bobby’s with a hugely varied and diverse offer for both

residents and visitors to the area. Whilst it’s been a tough time for high streets across the UK, we are going through a period of change and transition and these new developments are great news and will help inject new life in to our town centres. I regularly meet with and discuss the economy with businesses across the area and it’s been fantastic to hear from so many how things are really picking up after a tough 12 months or so. Business confidence seems to be improving and it’s great to see the relaxation of the restrictions taking place within the planned timetable. We will continue to do our absolute best to support our business communities and work with our partners in helping drive economic growth across our county.

The Dolphin Centre safely welcomes shoppers back following reopening of non-essential retail Dolphin Shopping Centre successfully managed the reoccupation of its nonessential retailers after the stores reopened on Monday, April 12 in line with the easing of government restrictions. More than 30 non-essential retailers reopened in the centre and an additional 11 new stores opened their doors for the first time in Kingland Crescent. John Grinnell, Centre Manager of the Dolphin Shopping Centre, said: “We have proficiently managed the reoccupation of the centre three times now over the past year. Each time we have taken learnings from the previous to ensure that customer safety and wellbeing continues to be at the core of everything that we do. “Our shoppers are well-accustomed to the measures we have in place at the centre and continue to adhere to these to ensure a safe environment for everyone. “We saw some initial queues on the first Monday morning ahead of reopening, but it has reduced now to much lower levels. Our extended opening hours for this initial launch period has helped manage the flow of people in the centre at peak times.” Contactless hand sanitiser stations have been positioned throughout the centre, whilst enhanced and more frequent cleaning routines are being carried out daily on frequent touch points. The centre has adapted its layout to reflect social distancing measures. A one-way system

remains in place, along with required social distancing floor markers. In addition, each retailer also has a dedicated team member at its entrance to manage the number of shoppers inside. A mother and daughter from Hamworthy who wished to remain anonymous, visited the centre for first time since lockdown lifted on Wednesday, April 28. The mother said: “We’re finding the shopping experience much better than we thought. People are sanitising their hands and social distancing, everyone seems to be doing the right things. We purposely came down earlier so that it wasn’t too busy. It’s good

to see things getting back to normal.” Rebecca Croad, a local Poole shopper, added: “It’s great that the one-way systems go all the way through the centre and people are respecting this guidance and wearing their masks. The addition of the hand sanitiser stations are brilliant because they are nontouch.” The Dolphin Shopping Centre is open 8am – 6.30pm daily. Shoppers are encouraged to check each retailer’s website for the individual opening hours. www.dolphinshoppingcentre.co.uk

Putting the ‘Social’ back in ‘Social Media’

We don’t normally speak much about the internal workings of the Chamber but the change to social media algorithms this year is something that affects any business using social channels, including ours. Don’t switch off! If you just heard ‘algorithm’ and ‘social media’ in that sentence, please don’t switch off! We can all help each other to ensure all the good news we all have to share reaches the people who follow us, which isn’t the case as it stands. It’s simple: before algorithms social media posts would be seen in the chronological order they were posted in, to followers. Now content is only shown to those who are deemed by the algorithm to be the most interested in the content. However most of us haven’t opted in, and we don’t have a choice – the algorithm decides for us. This means sometimes we / our audience misses information that could really be of benefit. The introduction of algorithms means businesses like ours - and yours - need engagement to keep the information flowing. So what can we do to help each other? Go to ‘settings’ on your channels and opt to see posts from Dorset Chamber first. Engage with us – a few likes, the odd comment and even a share of useful information all helps. It’s incremental; if you engage in a post the algorithm will see it and allow others to see it more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

too… and when they engage, yet more will see it. Get the gist? Members, tag us! We want to hear about your good news and business successes so we can respond and help your social engagement too. Algorithms are putting the ‘social’ back in

‘social media’ by encouraging people to respond and interact with posts, but that really means everyone needs to engage more too. You can find us as Dorset Chamber on Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. See you there!

A further 33 vacancies are currently available, with more to follow later this year. Overseeing the recruitment drive is Head of HR Helen Manley, a recent appointment herself, who says: “With the continued evolution of the eCommerce market, we’re working extremely hard to build the best team possible to support us in our mission to provide a fair, transparent /company/dorset-chamber/

Dorset Chamber launches support initiative for Business Leaders

#GetBusinessDone

Dorset Chamber has launched an initiative to provide support and build resilience amongst business leaders. At a time when the pressure of running a business and managing a team is potentially at its most stressful in our lived history, ‘Got Your 6’ (GU6 for short) has been developed to plug the gaps where the wellbeing of our bosses is often ignored or taken for granted. The initiative has been named after a term used by WW2 fighter pilots where they protected the ‘backs’ of fellow pilots in formation at the vulnerable rear ‘six o’clock’ position. Ultimately Dorset Chamber ‘has the backs’ of those in the business community; member or non-member, who may need some respectful and confidential support. A series of Chamber Board Directors, Ambassadors and members, as well as CEO Ian Girling, have qualified as Mental Health First Aiders (donated by Ouch Training) and are ready to take the next step as ‘GU6 Champions’. Sharing their knowledge and experience, they all understand the pressures of being a leader and will make themselves available for a relaxed peer 8

June 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

to peer chat or for signposting to further help. Believing strongly in the initiative, support has also been provided by south coast law firm, Lester Aldridge, to enable wider awareness of the GU6 service and the overall Health and Wellbeing focus developed by Dorset Chamber, including the forthcoming Fit For The Future Charter. GU6 has been developed by Past President and board member, Liz Willingham, who feels business leaders get forgotten in conversations about mental health. She says; “The wellbeing of our workforces is thankfully now higher on the agenda, and rightly so, but I have become increasingly concerned about the lack of support specifically for employers themselves who are often singlehandedly shouldering huge pressures from their businesses and the teams they employ. It can be a very lonely place. To be in good shape, our leaders need to be effective, resilient, and able to function with clarity”. Matthew Barrow, managing partner at Lester Aldridge, says; “Mental health awareness is something that we are passionate about and the /company/dorset-chamber/

/dorsetchamber

opportunity to support this initiative felt totally right for us. It’s such a critical subject to grasp right now. We encourage anyone to reach out and talk to someone if they feel they are struggling. I hope GU6 can provide real support to our local business heroes.” A dedicated section of the Chamber website hosts a growing bank of relevant resources and information, all aimed at helping our business leaders thrive in a difficult time. Existing and new GU6 Champions are also listed here and can be reached via private message via their LinkedIn profiles or through the Dorset Chamber team. It is hoped the number of Champions will grow and the reach of the support evolves as recovery from the pandemic unfolds. GU6 has been developed with the support of Ouch Training Team, Dorset Mind, and LiveWell Dorset.

Good Oaks Home Care franchise owners mark first anniversary with new office opening Two friends who met working in care have just celebrated their first business anniversary – by opening a new office. Friends Adam Downer, 34, and Sam Jones, 33, met while working in the care sector and started their own care franchise with Good Oaks Home Care on April 6th, last year, providing premium live-in and visiting care to the East Dorset area. Despite the challenges of the last year and having started their business right at the start of Covid Lockdown One, the East Dorset team have been so successful that they opened a new office in Salisbury on 1st May 2021. The new office based at Cross Keys House in the town, is currently recruiting and will be creating 25 new jobs in the local economy: bringing with it Good Oaks Home Care’s award-winning ethos of care and values of professionalism, respect, integrity, dedication and empathy. The team is also Salisbury’s first carbon-neutral franchised care provider – Good Oaks works with company Carbon Footprint to measure and limit their carbon emissions and takes part in tree-planting initiatives both in the UK and the Amazon Rainforest to offset all emissions. In fact, they provide a net gain for the planet – making them good for the community and the planet. The East Dorset team was recently a finalist in the prestigious Home Care Awards category for Best New Franchise

Start-Up, in recognition of their hard work and dedication through the Pandemic. Co-founder Sam worked as a care manager at Good Oaks Home Care in Poole before deciding to partner with Adam and start their own Good Oaks franchise. Sam helps care for his mum who has dementia and Adam helped to care for his father following a brain haemorrhage – the experience started him on his journey to working in care and looking after others. The friends, who both live in the Bournemouth area, said: “We are really proud of what we have achieved in the last year – helping to provide care and support for our community throughout Covid – one of the toughest times we have all been through. Working in care is hugely rewarding, we both met working in the sector and have looked after family members, so we know what our clients and their families are experiencing. “Being there for our clients when they need us most makes us very proud and drives us to want to help more peoplesomething we are delighted to be able to provide with the opening of the new Salisbury office.” www.goodoakshomecare.co.uk/ eastdorset/

The President’s Column by Caron Khan

Sometimes you just gotta say ‘NO’

When we start out in the world of business, fresh-faced and eager to please, we become ‘yes’ monkeys. It’s what gets us that meeting, impresses a client or wins us that big contract. It’s what comes out of our mouths, wide-eyed and bushy tailed, before we’ve even spent a millisecond questioning whether or not we actually want to say yes.

The result

A strung-out people-pleaser who has sacrificed their own wellbeing one too many times!

The cure

Listen to your inner wisdom and if it’s squirming for you to stall just say ‘no’. A big, fat, confident ‘NO’

The question is how do you know when something isn’t right?

L-R Co founders of Good Oaks Home Care Salisbury and East Dorset Adam Downer and Sam Jones. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

It’s pretty simple – if the thing you’re saying yes to is draining all your resources and making you feel tired, depleted and demotivated, it’s time you let it go. Only when you let it go will you be open to the myriad of positive opportunities that await you. The trick is to reengage with yourself and listen to your gut instinct and trust that it’s got your best interests at heart. But these ‘best interests’ are far more important than financial reward or notoriety; they’re your psychological and physical wellbeing – your happiness. By staying true to your inner wisdom and saying ‘no’ to things that threaten your lust for life, you’ll experience a sense of alignment within yourself that will, in turn, boost your happiness, energy and productivity. Why not have a think about all the things in your world that you’ve been saying yes to, despite knowing deep down they’re not making you happy. Once you’ve unearthed the culprits, you just need to muster up the energy and conviction to put your foot down, once and for all. 11

BU ranked in top 7% of universities globally in Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings The rankings assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, with BU placed 74th in the world. Bournemouth University has been ranked 74th in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2021. The rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to protect people and the planet. Universities receive a ranking for each of the 17 SDGs and an overall ranking. BU’s overall score places the university at 19th place in the UK and in the top 7% of universities in the world, with 1,115 universities from 98 countries and regions entering the 2021 THE Impact Rankings. BU was ranked in 8th place globally for SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – up from 10th place last year - in recognition of continued improvements in reducing the amount of waste produced and increasing recycling, with zero waste sent to landfill and stringent procurement policies in place to prevent waste. BU also ranked 13th in the world for SDG 13: Climate Action, up from 34th place last year. The submission highlighted the range of events and activities BU holds to raise

awareness of environmental issues, including outreach events, student campaigns, and professorial lectures. It also commended the work of the university in cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 53 per cent between 2005/6 and 2019/20. BU’s Climate and Ecological Crisis Action Plan has now set a target of achieving net zero emissions by 2030/31, as part of the university’s commitment to protecting and preserving a sustainable environment through research, education and practice. BU was also ranked at 55th and 58th place for SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, respectively. These submissions were supported by BU research which aligns to the SDGs, including an Eating and Drinking Well with Dementia toolkit, which addresses SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, and the Media Action Against Rape project, which tackles SDG 5: Gender Equality alongside SDG 16. In addition to this, it included BU’s contribution to influencing policy such as the work to protect people from scams and commitment to including

the SDGs in the curriculum and research, as led by the Sustainability Academic Network. BU Chief Operating Officer Jim Andrews said: “Sustainability has always been a core part of BU and we are delighted to see this recognised with our position in these latest rankings. “At BU we continually look to embed these important issues into every aspect of our work, and ensure that we’re working for the benefit of our community and the world that we live in. We will continue to work alongside our partners in the sector and in our region, to embed best practice in all that we do and ensure that we build on what we have already achieved. “I’m proud to see the work of our staff and students reflected in these rankings, as these are issues that we all care about, and my thanks go to all members of the BU community for their hard work and dedication.” View the full Impact Rankings 2021 results: www.timeshighereducation.com/rankings/ impact/2021/overall www.bournemouth.ac.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS

Is your dishwasher trying to kill you? Does every device in your home really need to be connected to the internet? And could your smart appliance be turned against you? If you try to purchase a new appliance these days, there is a good chance you will be guided toward the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art, smart appliances first. Whether you are in the market for a new dishwasher, fridge or even toaster, the chances are there is an internet-enabled device waiting to target you, but why the increase in IoT (internet of things)? Do we really crave every item in our houses to be smart, or do these companies have something a little more sinister up their sleeves where they actually just make things smart in order to learn more about us? From the toothbrush that sends you a notification in the form of a graph of how well you brushed your teeth in the morning to the smart fork that senses if it thinks you’re eating too fast (I really am not making this up), we might just be walking into a future of IP-connected mayhem. IoT has boomed in the last decade and while I love a good gadget with a truly smart capability, where should we draw the line? Some devices are arguably being produced with internet capability just for the sake of it. With more and more smart products coming to market as standard, what if I really don’t want an internet-connected washing machine? Does it make my life easier? And what about the security implications of having all these extra IP addresses in the home? Let’s not forget the saying that the ‘S’ in ‘IoT’ stands for security! Data collectors I was recently in the market for a new dishwasher and after lots of research, I found one that came highly reviewed and recommended. It happened to come with smart functionality by default and an app to download for all your smart home needs – apparently. I found a statement in marketing material about IoT dishwashers suggesting that you can take advantage of knowing ‘how long until the wash is done’, though I don’t see that as much of an issue when I’m out and about. I’m not sure about you, but this usually isn’t on my mind when I go out for a walk; then again, I guess they are catering for all people. Such smart appliances are often around the same price as their equivalent non-smart model now too. Now I know I didn’t really need my dishwasher to be smart, but it was the same price and the techie inside me actually wanted to know its capabilities or to see if it could improve my life somewhat, so I carried on with the purchase and installed the app. While setting up the app on my iPhone, I noticed a lot of data was being collected and linked to me, including my location, user content and contact info plus other identifiers. I went through all the settings and discovered a lack of two-factor authentication too, but this is typical with a lot of IoT. Once I’d connected the app to the dishwasher, I wanted to see what type of connectivity I could take advantage of. I played around with the app for a bit and learned what was on offer. I opened more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

the door to load the dishwasher, but I was soon interrupted as I had been sent a notification. I checked my phone and realized that I had been notified that the door had been opened…. I know! I opened it! I quickly turned this notification off, but I soon found the app was not all that intuitive and in fact quite cumbersome. Later that evening and although I could have turned it on remotely, I was standing right next to it as I had just placed the last plate in; although I had my tablet with me, it was far quicker to turn it on physically, and like the reviews said, the dishwasher was refreshingly quiet when it started. However, two hours later, it all changed in the house. I was standing next to my new appliance when the door began to open on its own accord as if it was possessed and was coming after me! Had my dishwasher been hacked and was now riddled with malware being remotely operated in order to kill me?! As the steam rose from the glistening plates, I soon realized that it was in fact the automatic door-opening feature that had sprung into action to improve the “drying performance”. Ok, I overreacted a little, but this strange new spaceship-like feature caught me off guard and made me jump in the process. However, what this ordeal made me question was whether appliances and other gadgets really need to be smart? In this case, I am certain that the app was not, in fact, making my life more streamlined, so I deleted the app and made a conscious effort to stand clear of the door near the end of a cycle. My hypothesis is that companies are in desperate need of our data. Cars have been sending a wealth of information back to their manufacturers for many years now and they are often the first to tell you that you have gone over the 10,000 miles threshold and now require service. This is now the norm for other gadgets

around the home and we are seemingly willingly accepting this. However, this information could be used against us if it were to get into the wrong hands. Malicious actors are constantly attacking websites looking for data and unfortunately some personal data inevitably still gets compromised and ends up on the dark web. Theoretically, threat actors could gain access to this live data in the cloud and even learn our daily habits, which could include when we have vacated the premises. Although I am not aware of any data leaks involving smart household appliances, it is worth noting that these devices suck up a lot of personal data and store it in the cloud for multiple purposes – with, in my personal opinion, very little of this trade-off actually helping the products. This data trove can be seen as currency to some stakeholders and could be targeted so we must limit the amount of data we release in the first place. If your device has to be internet enabled to function, consider reducing the amount of data you hand over to the developers of smart products. Furthermore, use unique passwords or passphrases, enable two-factor authentication where possible, and keep your devices updated to steer clear of as many vulnerabilities as possible. Just consider this: If a malicious actor were to hold my dishwasher to ransom, there is a good chance they would get my money as I really hate washing up that much. So, until smart dishwasher apps come with being able to load the dishwasher, put the dishes in and unload it after a wash as standard, I think I’ll stick to traditional appliance usage in the kitchen for now. Turn Your Intellectual Property Into £££££

The thought of protecting Intellectual Property (IP) can be intimidating for many businesses as it sounds complicated and costly. As a result, many businesses have neither protected their IP or realised full commercial value from it. This means that they are missing out on a tax incentive called Patent Box which rewards patented innovation and reduces the corporation tax rate to 10%. It may be that the patented element that qualifies is minor and it doesn’t have to be rocket science to be patentable but could simply be small technical improvements on existing products or processes. Bournemouth consultancy, Business Cash Enabler, provides a

18

June 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

service to help demystify the jargon around IP to help advise a business if they may be able to realise commercial gain from their hard work in developing IP. Consultant Rob Sowden explains “looking for commercial value in IP is a natural extension of the research and development (R&D) tax credits scheme that many innovative companies benefit from, or could benefit from. Claiming R&D tax credits is only part of the financial reward for innovation. Many companies have not realised the commercial potential of their intellectual property (IP), often seeing IP as merely something to protect; however there are considerable financial gains to be derived from IP. With a simple patent found in the R&D that a business performs, there could be big savings on corporation tax, under the government’s Patent Box relief scheme. You don’t need a whole product to be patented. Even if a minor element is patented then you can qualify with 100% of a company’s worldwide profits from that product qualifying for 10% corporation tax. A simple quick and inexpensive IP assessment can be carried out to determine if a business has

something worth patenting. This often overlooked process could put a business on course for a massive boost to intangible IP asset value resulting in a much higher company valuation. A few key considerations for any business to which this may apply are: • Have you made an R&D claim but never considered patents? • Are you put off because of legal costs? • Are you looking to raise funds? • Do you want to maximise opportunities overseas? • Could a patent look good for funding or exit purposes? • Can you reduce your tax payment thanks to IP? Business Cash Enabler works with experts that combine scientific and technical knowledge along

/company/dorset-chamber/

/dorsetchamber

with IP specialists and tax experts, which ensures that a business is fully benefiting from innovation tax incentives as well as greatly improving company value. This service may be especially beneficial for businesses who have previously claimed under the R&D tax credits scheme but not realised the wider, more valuable potential to create intangible IP asset value, increasing financial reward and long term security for business owners.” For more information visit www. businesscashenabler.co.uk To arrange a free eligibility check email Rob.Sowden@ businesscashenabler.co.uk or call 07732 627085.

Dorset to host ground-breaking schools’ conference on Racism and Inequality A conference for secondary school students on racism and inequality will be taking place in Dorset this September. Lytchett Minster School, near Poole, will host schools from around the country for the groundbreaking event which will educate children in how to understand and deal with issues such as prejudice, bias and injustice. Conference organiser, Beyond This, has to date run two human rights conferences. In 2019, secondary school students from 40 schools around the South West came together to learn about human rights issues impacting our world. In particular, they heard from Richard Ratcliffe and his on-going struggle to free his wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from detention in Iran as well as engaging with issues from modern slavery to climate change. The new conference, FREE AND EQUAL?, will physically take place at Lytchett Minster School near Poole, however the entire conference will be filmed and streamed LIVE to secondary schools across the country. Students and teachers will be able to hear first-hand of the reality of growing up in the UK as a person of colour. They will learn and reflect on how prejudice, unconscious bias and unfair practices continue to perpetuate injustice in society and they will be equipped to dialogue about difference and challenge unfair systems. Beyond This founder and conference director Peter Radford says, “Our society is losing the ability to listen openly and dialogue with people who have a different experience to our own. Due to the algorithms of internet search engines and social media platforms we are increasingly fed viewpoints that reinforce our prejudices in sound

bites that usually exacerbate conflict and distrust and hinder positive engagement.” The conference, being run in liaison with Amnesty International UK and Unicef UK’s Rights Respecting School Award, will aim to inspire change through growing awareness and emphasising the value of every human person: Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Of the many confirmed speakers is Lee Lawrence. Lawrence was 11 years old when his mother Cherry Groce was shot in front of him by police officers in Brixton in 1985. Lee will speak of his own journey in seeking justice and his work promoting Restorative Justice as a means to bring people and cultures together. Also speaking will be Aisha Jawando who plays the lead role in Tina! The Tina Turner Musical as well as experts who will focus on awareness, education and activism in tackling racial inequality. The conference is a not-for-profit venture and the organisers are appealing to individuals and businesses to get involved in sponsoring the event and taking part in the conversation about systemic racism. “Nothing like this has ever been done before in the UK,” adds Radford. “We have the chance here to shift mindsets and promote greater harmony and understanding as well as celebrating the rich and beautiful diversity of our world.” The conference will take place in Dorset on Tuesday 21 September 2021 0930-1500. Details of the conference can be found at www.beyondthis.co.uk/stand-up-conference

Aspire Training Team Reduces Carbon Footprint through COVID19 Reducing energy usage and the consequent carbon footprint, Going Green is an ethos that runs through Dorset based Aspire Training Team. Having introduced energy saving initiatives, recycling programmes and improved efficiencies, the environmental impact has been hugely reduced. In the past year Aspire have made the decision to close their office in Poole in order to reduce their carbon footprint. Due to this decision they’re saving on gas, electric, waste and the number of employees who travel to work has been reduced. In fact, over 50% of their staff now work from home. Due to Aspire’s efforts and sustainable practices their current YTD CO2e (Carbon dioxide equivalent, all greenhouse gases included) is 5,937 compared to their prior YTD CO2e which was 26,411. This means Aspire only need to plant 89 trees in order to become carbon neutral which has reduced drastically from 396 trees last year. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Aspire are also focusing on remote learning so their training team do not need to travel as much, all their portfolios are electronic so there is no need for printing, none of the waste they generate goes to landfill and they’ve introduced e-bikes to promote sustainable travel when travel is required. Cheryl Hadland, Managing Director of Aspire Training Team says ‘We produce a monthly carbon footprint report to ensure everyone across the company is aware of the impact they are making through our activities. We are closer than ever to becoming a carbon neutral company and will continue to introduce new energy efficient action plans in order to reduce our environmental impact on a day to day basis’. Aspire Training Team are one of the South’s leading apprenticeship and training providers offering

a range of courses and apprenticeships in childcare, business administration, leadership and management and customer service. www.aspiretrainingteam.co.uk

How to plan for hybrid working Given the past year we have experienced in the workplace, it is not surprising that hybrid working is increasingly being spoken about as a potential ‘new normal’. However, employers considering implementing hybrid working have a number of things to consider for this to be a success. First off, it is important to implement a system which easily allows you to identify who is in the office, who is working from home, and who is elsewhere (e.g. customer visit or annual leave) each day. This is also important for monitoring annual leave and sickness absence. Employers should review their existing working from home policy if they have one or introduce a hybrid/working from home policy if not, to ensure it is fit for purpose going forward. Employers should also ensure that employment contracts are clear on where an employee’s registered place of work is. In many cases, this will remain the office, and occasional working from home will be a discretionary measure offered by the employer. It is also beneficial for an employer to have a flexible working policy. Some employees may want to apply for a form of flexible working not covered under the hybrid working policy (e.g. reduced hours, or a permanent change to their place of work), and this will set out how such requests are handled. Hybrid working isn’t just an HR issue! Other departments and functions are likely to need to be involved in planning a successful hybrid working approach. These may include IT, to ensure that employees have the necessary technology, Health and safety, as DSE assessments may be appropriate for ongoing arrangements and your Data Protection Officer or whoever heads up data protection issues, to ensure appropriate data management. For help in planning for hybrid working for your employees, ViewHR are here to help – please contact us for an initial discussion. Do you have a retirement plan?

Just because saving for retirement is difficult, it doesn’t mean you should give up; and the current reliefs and allowances on pension contributions should give cause for optimism. If you expect to retire on a final-salary pension and with no mortgage, your perspective on retirement may well be rosy; if you are grappling with debt and worried about having insufficient pension savings, it may be a different picture. For some, the question is not how to retire successfully, but how to retire at all, given that there may be precious little in the way of a state safety net to fall back on. Of particular concern is the group of pre-retirees aged 55–64, only half of whom have given thought to how they will manage in retirement; and only a quarter know how much they have in their pension pot.1 These people may only have a few working years left to build their nest egg. Those able to put some aside really should: people massively underestimate the amount of money they need to save. People also underestimate longevity and therefore how long retirement could last. Many experts are warning that the end of final-salary pension schemes, chronic underfunding of defined contribution pensions, and increasing life expectancy are creating a perfect storm that threatens to destabilise the financial wellbeing of the coming generation of retirees. The solution is to plan You have to ask yourself: how much will I need, and how much can I afford to put away? Then you need to factor in any other sources of retirement income and you can see the size of the gap you are trying to fill. It’s vital savers know and understand all their options for using their pension; but also that they make the most of the current tax breaks while building one. Does your business have a Corporate Social Responsibility policy? We caught up with Kelly Marsden and Tracy Michael from The HR Team to find out more… If you are a business owner, the days of operating solely for profit are gone. Corporate Social Responsibility is all about companies playing their responsible part in society and giving back to society. Companies, customers and communities can and should thrive together. Corporate Social Responsibility is when a company operates in an ethical and sustainable way and deals with its environmental and social impacts. This means a careful consideration of human rights, the community, environment, and society in which it operates. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has many advantages that can apply to any business, regardless of its size or sector. • The potential benefits to your business could include: • Better brand recognition • Positive business reputation • Increased sales and customer loyalty • Operational costs savings • Better financial performance • Greater ability to attract talent and retain staff • Organisational growth • Easier access to capital • CSR Examples Some of the most common examples of CSR include: Community – support local community initiatives, promote local businesses, provide free training, gain partnerships. Marketplace – responsible selling, responsible marketing, fair treatment of customers. /company/dorset-chamber/

Reducing carbon footprints – reduce energy usage, print less, minimise single use plastic, recycle more. Charitable giving – find out what charities motivate employees, provide paid time off, match funds raised. Workplace – achieve responsible business practices. Devote more attention on health and wellbeing issues. Changing Trends in CSR For millennials and Generation Z, socially responsible companies are even more important. They believe companies should be invested in improving society and look for solutions that will assist in those improvements. Companies should share how they are trying to make a positive impact on the world, so the public can see the pro-social initiatives they are making. Showcasing efforts is important to target millennials because these efforts will sway the choices millennials make as consumers. Activism by millennials and all generations will also influence changing trends in CSR. You can expect to see companies taking a public stand against on-the-job harassment and discrimination thanks to the #metoo movement. Diversity in the workplace will continue to expand embracing people of all races, genders, cultures, disabilities, and sexual orientations. For brands of all sizes it's key to pay attention to the issues that your customers are interested in and the impacts your company can make at a community and global level. www.thehrteam.co.uk

Inspire pledges its continued support to three local charities for 2021 Poole-based business and tax advisory firm, Inspire, has announced that it will be supporting three local charities, as part of its fundraising activities this year. First up is Julia’s House Children’s Hospice, a charity that the firm has supported for many years. The Inspire team will continue to take part in a number of fundraising initiatives, activities and challenges for the well-known Dorset and Wiltshire charity. Last year, several of the Inspire team took part in the charity’s virtual Everest Expedition and in previous years have completed various team and individual fundraising challenges. Inspire Founder, Warren Munson was a trustee of Julia’s House for six years from 2015. Inspire’s second charity partner for 2021 is MYTime Young Carers. The Poole-based charity has a mission to level the playing field for the regions young carers, by providing then with support, friendship and opportunities. Having supported the charity for the last six years, Inspire will continue to work closely with the team at MYTime and many of the team will once again be supporting MYTime events and activities, helping to support young carers. A new addition to Inspire’s charity support for this year, is Dorset Mind. With the sad passing away of former Inspire colleague Robin Witt, in December 2020 with a rare form of dementia, the team wanted to raise funds for the charity that helped support Robin and his family. Warren commented: “As a team we’re passionate about giving back and supporting local charities. This year, in particular, it’s very important to us to not only do more together as a team, when we can, but to offer our support in whatever way we can, as everyone starts to return to a more normal life as we ease out of the lockdown restrictions. “Following the sad passing away of Robin at the end of last year, we all wanted to do something to help one of the charities that helped Robin and his family during such a difficult time. Robin was a much-loved and respected member of the Inspire team and we’re really looking forward to doing something in his memory later this year. “We will all be taking part in a number of fundraising and volunteering activities to support our charity partners in the coming months - and with some dedicated more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

runners, cyclists and hikers in the team, there will be plenty of opportunity to get involved!” Caroline Attreed, Corporate Fundraiser at Julia’s House, added: “Julia’s House would like to say a massive thank you to Warren and everyone at Inspire for the fantastic continued support over the last six years. You have enabled us to keep caring for some of the most vulnerable local families, and we are delighted to hear that you have chosen to support us again in 2021 with your fundraising activities. “The situation with Covid has had a devastating effect on our income, and it means so much to know that because of you, the families we care for will continue to receive the support and help they so desperately need.” Founded by Warren Munson in 2004, Inspire’s goal is to establish the firm as a true employer of choice to ensure it attracts, engages and retains the top talent in its profession. New regulations on pre-pack phoenix sales New regulations on pre-pack phoenix sales, catchily-named The Administration (Restrictions on Disposal etc. to Connected Persons) Regulations 2021, came into effect on 30th April. Below, I provide an overview. A phoenix sale is the purchase of an insolvent business by its previous management. The business goes bust, and then re-opens, very quickly, looking much the same as it did before. Understandably, people owed money from the failed business often think this should not be allowed. They are likely to think the new regulations are a step in the right direction. The regulations affect any early ‘substantial disposal’ to a ‘connected party’ and have broad definitions of both. A connected party includes: • The bust company’s directors, including shadow directors and other officers • Associates of the company • Associates of the directors If a substantial disposal is being made to a connected party (or their company) within the first eight weeks of an administration, then administrators need to either: 1. Get creditor approval, or 2. Get an independent report from an experienced evaluator At Frettens, we can act as independent evaluators to buyers from administrators, to assess whether the proposed sale should be regarded as legitimate. In these circumstances, time is of the essence. We aim to turn around an evaluation in two business days, once we have received the relevant information from the buyer and administrator. For more information on the new pre-pack regulations, head to our website to read our comprehensive guide or visit the pre-pack section on our insolvency page. Malcolm also hosts monthly Coffee Break Briefing webinars, which can be found on our Events page. Contact details: Phone: 01202 499255 Email: mniekirk@frettens.co.uk

education with Weymouth College

Just over 12 months ago – and almost overnight – companies had to consider changing the way they had been working. Not just to maintain and potentially grow their market position, but to survive. Many companies nationally have received government support – with over £46.5bn accessed by over 1.5 million approved applicants under the Bounce Back Loan Scheme alone as at 21/3/21. Our Employer Services team saw a large increase in companies looking for guidance to navigate the new restrictions and financial support options and we continue to work closely with local businesses to better understand and actively support the changing and developing needs of Dorset. As businesses reopen, many organisations are diversifying their approach to recruitment to explore the governmentbacked initiatives currently available. Businesses may find recruitment challenging and FE colleges, such as ourselves, play a key role in supporting and developing the suite of services available to help rebuild, retrain and reskill staff for business recovery. Training has a key role in succession planning and many organisations are now aware of the positive contribution investment in staff development can have on business sustainability and growth. As a training provider, we adapted quickly to an online delivery model, maximising courses available to businesses – free of charge – and are now pleased to be looking to the safe return of face-to-face training as a viable option within the training offer available. We have seen particular engagement from the business community with our Mental Health First Aid training – with two cohorts complete and more dates coming online. We will continue to work with Dorset businesses to develop the commercial training offer and apprenticeship support required throughout 2021 and beyond. If you would like to work with us to grow that offer and inform the training solutions you may need, please do get in touch. www.weymouth.ac.uk/employerservices employerservices@weymouth.ac.uk 01305 208709

eCommerce boom continues despite re-opening of nonessential retail -OnBuy founder and CEO, Cas Paton, gives his predictions on the future of retailHas the eCommerce boom slowed down since the re-opening of non-essential retail? Not in the slightest. At OnBuy.com, we’ve seen substantial sales growth with uplifts of up to 250% since non-essential retail re-opened on April 12, which certainly suggests that the brakes have not been applied to the eCommerce boom! Despite non-essential retail re-opening, the Office for National Statistics found that 33% of people will continue doing more of their shopping online once the pandemic has ended. This permanent behaviour change supports what eCommerce businesses, such as OnBuy, have seen in recent months. The pandemic has led the public to change many different habits and behaviours, including how they shop. As a result, I would argue that the eCommerce industry has accelerated faster in the past 12 months than it would have done ordinarily over the next five years. At OnBuy, our business has grown by 13x in just 13 months and average order value has increased by 37% year-on-year since the pandemic began. With growth continuing even since the re-opening of non-essential retail, it’s clear that these shopping patterns are here to stay. Consumers have developed new shopping habits that are arguably much easier and more convenient. While YouGov found that non-essential retail stores were the third most popular place that the public were looking forward to visiting after April 12, it doesn’t seem that this is hindering the unstoppable rise of eCommerce. With the sector only set to continue growing /company/dorset-chamber/

and thriving, the future for eCommerce is exciting and we haven’t even scratched the surface as to what is possible in the space yet. Consumers can expect to see new technology delivering a better online shopping experience and these developments will spill into the physical retail space to reinvent the high street. This omnichannel way of shopping will appeal to all generations who will begin to use the high street as a social destination and will continue to shop online via mobile devices for convenience and ease. Additionally, multi-brand multi-category shopping is seeing a real overhaul. With the closure of many high street department stores, customers are looking for new ways to shop and by offering choice, variety and convenience, online marketplaces present the solution. This is just one of many reasons why I believe that online marketplaces will continue to dominate the eCommerce space for many more years. Click and Collect convenience shopping is also rising and will play a large role in the future of the high street as customers take advantage of the ever-expanding range of delivery options available to them. As you can already see with the likes of Argos, Dunelm, you can check for products that are in stock at your local store and pick them up that same day. The pandemic has changed how we shop, and many of those changes are likely to stick around throughout 2021 and beyond. www.onbuy.com

Dorset LEP secures further £300,000 for business leader support Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has secured a further £300,000 to bring its successful Peer Networks programme to more of the county’s business leaders in 2021/22. Funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), this national initiative is designed to bring small and medium enterprise (SME) business leaders together in facilitated sessions to share experience and expertise. Dorset’s award is equal third highest in England, with only Greater Manchester and Lancashire receiving more, and reflects the success of the inaugural scheme in 2020/21. Lorna Carver, Director Dorset LEP said: “Having worked with our delivery partners to deliver such a fantastic programme of support last year, we’re delighted to be able to keep the momentum going with this significant award for 2021. The size of the allocation we have secured for this year is a direct result of the success and impact of the programme last year.” The Peer Networks programme is administered by Dorset Gateway (Dorset LEP’s growth hub) and will be delivered by three delivery partners; Evolve Members, Dorset Chamber – who were both involved in last year’s programme and - Dorset Business Mentors. Working virtually in cohort groups of 11, sessions are facilitated by experienced business coaches and focus on key areas of business development. Each participant is also supported with dedicated one-to-one support, allowing them further opportunity to digest and discuss aspects of running and growing a business. Dorset LEPs Director, Lorna Carver added: “Feedback from last year’s participants on the value and benefit of Peer Networks to their businesses has been outstanding. It’s a testament to our delivery partners for running such effective programmes. Eligible businesses can register their interest in this programme now and we look forward to helping more of Dorset’s fantastic SME business leaders and decision-makers benefit from this support over the coming months.” Matthew Goode, Director of Marketing at BH Live who was part of 2020’s cohort said, “It’s been a rare opportunity to take time out to reflect on one’s own performance while soaking up new (and old) knowledge and encouragement from a group of peers that really helps maintain focus to drive results and being an effective leader.” Dorset Chamber Chief Executive, Ian Girling said: “These types of programmes build incredibly strong bonds, friendships and trusted support networks which last long after the course has officially finished. The new programme couldn’t have come at a more important time as businesses look beyond the pandemic and to the future.” Warren Munson, founder of Evolve Members said: “In delivering the first phase 38

of the Peer Networks programme we saw incredible collaboration and support being given by the participants to each other.  As a result, as well as some significant commercial outcomes individuals have been able to develop and grow themselves as business leaders.” Alistair Bayliss, Joint Programme Manager for Dorset Business Mentors said: “Growing any business involves solving problems, setting goals, and a plan. Peer-to-peer action-learning sets are a really powerful tool to support this process.  Dorset Business Mentors is delighted to offer two groups: Women in Business and Management & Leadership.”

Taking on the Dorset Three Peaks for Diverse Abilities Two of Pulford Publicity’s directors, Ben and Louis Pulford, will be taking on the challenge of scaling Dorset’s three peaks whilst walking a marathon in one day, in support of the company’s charity of the year, Diverse Abilities. Diverse Abilities is Dorset’s disability charity, supporting adults and children with profound physical and learning disabilities. As with many charities, the pandemic has taken its toll on fundraising over the past year, so the organisation is looking forward to getting people together to take up a challenge and add some muchneeded funds to the coffers. During the event, Ben and Louis will trek to the top of Lewesdon Hill, Pilsdon Pen and Bulbarrow Hill, covering a marathon distance of 26.2 miles across the Wessex Ridgeway and ascending more than 1,530m in a single day - that’s taller than Ben Nevis. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Employability Skills and Young Workers Young workers have been hit the hardest by rising unemployment during the Covid pandemic, with those under the age of 35 accounting for almost 80% of jobs lost in the past year. Official figures show youth long-term unemployment has hit a five-year high, with more than 200,000 under 25s out of work for more than six months. Under 25’s were more likely to be furloughed than any other age group as hospitality, retail and jobs that cannot be done from home and employing a predominantly young workforce was hit the hardest. As we see the country start to emerge from the pandemic and businesses tentatively open and start recruiting it is important that young workers know what employers are looking for and how to make themselves stand out in a crowd of potential candidates. Many employers do not recruit on qualifications alone, which is why developing employability skills is crucial. The most common employability skills employers like to explore are: Problem Solving, Teamwork, Digital Skills, Motivation, Positive Self Belief, Emotional Intelligence, Curiosity, A Love Of Learning, Resilience, communication and Creative Thinking. These skills can be achieved in a number of ways including engaging in part time work, sports, drama and other extra-curricular activities, clubs, societies and voluntary work including the Duke Of Edinburgh Awards scheme. There is also a plethora of online resources to help. So whether you are a young person returning to the workplace or entering the workforce for the first time or the parent of a young person, take the time to consider not only qualifications but also employability skills. It could make all the difference. Written by Nicki Hayton, Branch Director – Dorchester office, 01305 213883 www.mploystaff.com

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / INTERNATIONAL TRADE

The new rules for VAT for the e-commerce Supply chain What is changing?

From 1 July 2021, the VAT rules on cross-border business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce activities will change. The rationale for these changes is to overcome the barriers to crossborder online sales and address challenges arising from the VAT regimes for distance sales of goods and for the importation of low value consignments. New VAT rules for e-commerce will be rolled out across the EU in July to simplify life for businesses that sell goods online, while ensuring a more level playing field with online companies from outside the EU. These rules will be particularly significant for anyone selling goods online or running an online marketplace. The aim is to: • ensure that VAT is paid where goods are consumed or the services paid for are provided; • create a uniform VAT regime for crossborder supplies of goods and services; • offer businesses a simple system to declare and pay their VAT in the EU, using the (Import) One-Stop Shop portal; • introduce a level playing field between EU businesses and non-EU sellers . How can online businesses benefit from the new rules? The EU has developed new online tools where businesses can register and take care of their VAT obligations for all their sales in the EU. This replaces the previous system whereby online companies were obliged to register for VAT in each EU country before they could sell to consumers there. The new system should save EU businesses up to €2.3 billion a year in compliance costs. As of 1 July, businesses will be able to electronically declare and pay the VAT for all their intra-EU sales in a single quarterly return - all while working with the tax administration of their own Member State and in their own language, even when their sales are crossborder. The new platform for businesses and

taxable persons, the VAT One-Stop Shop (OSS), can be used to account for the VAT due on goods and services sold online throughout the EU, reducing compliance costs by up to 95%. Meanwhile, the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) facilitates the collection, declaration and payment of VAT for sellers that are supplying goods from outside the EU to customers in the EU. In practice, this means that these suppliers and electronic interfaces can collect, declare and directly pay the VAT to the tax authorities of their choice, rather than having the customer pay the import VAT at the time the goods are delivered to him. This makes life easier for the businesses, but also protects online shoppers from hidden costs.

Composite goods

New health certificate rules apply to composite goods as of 21st April 2021. Composite products are foodstuffs containing both products of plant origin and processed products of animal origin. The composite products must be produced in EUapproved establishments. There is a transition period of six months for the imports of composite products during which time the old certificate will still be accepted. Where no certificate was required prior to 21 April 2021, then the new relevant certificate or private attestation must be provided with immediate effect. If your composite product already requires an EHC, you will be able to carry on using the current EHC until August or choose to use the new documentation. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Finally, the current VAT exemption for packages entering the EU with a value not exceeding €22 will be abolished. While most non-EU companies play fair, this exemption however meant that some sellers were able to fraudulently declare high-cost goods, such as smartphones, at a lower price only to benefit of this exemption, thus undercutting EU companies who had no choice but to charge their EU customers the full VAT rate on the same products. By eliminating this exemption, European businesses will be able to compete within the level playing-field. In short, these new rules will lead to a speedier, more efficient cross-border online shopping experience for both businesses and customers.

Is your Company Ready for July 2021 ? The government created an easement to enable UK companies to delay import declarations for up to six months, for standard goods. While this is helpful in reducing the requirement for declarations at the UK border at present, it requires importers to ensure they have the appropriate arrangements in place to make the declarations. The Incoterms® rule determines whether you (the importer/buyer) or your supplier (the seller) are responsible for import procedures when goods arrive in the UK. Any rule other than DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means that you, the buyer, are responsible. So, unless you are buying under DDP, you will need to make sure an import declaration is made. protection with Tower Supplies

From a garage in Tower Road, Bournemouth, in September 1983 Jonathan Aris started Tower Supplies. Many years on and the company mission remains the same – make the workplace a better place – albeit this is now achieved through a vast array of intelligent products and solutions that protect people and enhance their environment. From handwritten orders in 1983 we now receive virtually all orders electronically – most through our own online system. A 75,000sq-foot Distribution Centre with tens of thousands of bar-coded products and in-house logo application facility is a huge advancement from the set-up in the early eighties. Tower’s founding customers expected personal weekly deliveries. Nowadays same day despatch of orders made by 2pm from our vast range of stocked items is the norm. Our own brand of “Bear” durable wearable products were introduced and we now have many Tower products in numerous PPE categories. We have evolved with perception of health and safety in the workplace from optional usage rationale when we started, through a mandated PPE requirement era and to now being part of an integral safety culture with customers. The price of a product remains important – main items are a lot cheaper nowadays – but we now support more customers with measurement of the cost-in-use of a product. When we reached our 35 year milestone we took the opportunity to think what our mission – make the workplace a better place – will involve when we’re 50 years old. The incorporation of well-being with health and safety is being recognised already but will increase. The world is more environmentally aware however we believe that the safe, secure and sustainable disposable PPE and workwear will be considered more. Wearable technology and the internet-of-things may revolutionise how we monitor, consumable and replenish products. We’ve got lots to look forward to. Should Flexible Working become a standard option for employees? As the nation began returning to work after lockdown, there have been calls for employers to make flexible working a standard option for employees. Paul Burton, Head of Employment at Frettens, discusses the implications of flexible working for employees and employers. What is flexible working? Flexible working describes non-traditional working patterns that suit an employee's needs, for example; hours which accommodate childcare responsibilities. All employees have the right to request flexible working via a formal application. To be classed as an 'employee', you must have worked for the same employer for at least 26 weeks. The minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss, has asked employers to make flexible working a standard option for employees. What are the advantages of flexible working for employees? Liz Truss believes this step would boost both productivity and morale and improve employment prospects for women - who are twice as likely to work flexibly while they juggle childcare responsibilities - as well as those who don’t live close to big cities. The Government Equalities Office has published a report, ‘Encouraging employers to advertise jobs as flexible’, by the Behavioural Insights Team and the jobs website Indeed. The report said that job applications increase by 30 per cent when flexible working is offered. How to implement flexible working Some employers are already trying to harness some of the positive effects that the pandemic has had on work patterns. PWC is one of the businesses embracing this. They announced in March that employees can work from home a couple of days a week and start as early or late as they like, giving staff much more control over their work. They have said that staff can condense their hours and knock off early on Fridays this summer, as a nod to the testing times everyone has had to overcome. Chairman Kevin Ellis has said he hopes that the changes make flexible working the norm rather than the exception. He wants staff to feel trusted and empowered. How does flexible working affect the employer? We've looked at what flexible working is and why it can work for employees; but do flexible

/company/dorset-chamber/

working practices align with employers goals? What are the advantages of flexible working for employers? According to a 2019 survey conducted by Airtasker, employees are more productive working remotely than in-office workers; working on average 1.4 days more per month. Furthermore, in-office workers were being distracted in the workplace for an average of 37 minutes per day; 10 minutes more than remote workers. Allowing for flexible working can attract more job-seekers and can also improve retention of current employees. What are the disadvantages of flexible working for employers? Flexible working might not work for every business. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon has another intake of 3000 new recruits this summer who need hands on training and mentoring to learn their trade. He said that working from home is an ‘aberration’ which he wants to correct as soon as possible, with young employees needing direct contact and mentorship that can only be achieved in the office. Is flexible working here to stay? Every business is different. But it’s worth heeding Mr Ellis’s belief that conscious planning is needed to ensure that silver linings of Covid are not lost when the economy finally opens up. Now is the time to analyse what has worked over the last year for your business and what hasn’t. We are at a crossroads: the same path won’t suit every business, but everyone should make an active choice about the direction they want to go. An employment solicitor's view Paul Burton, Head of Employment said: “So many more people are working flexibly now since the pandemic started, involving changing locations, for example working from home, or different hours. This includes us at Frettens! I do not believe it will go back completely as it was before the pandemic and therefore employers need to ensure their flexible working policies and practices are up to date with the law and also consistent and fair. We can assist you with the drafting of such policies and advice on good practice.” www.frettens.co.uk

A day in the life of Steele Raymond Trainee Solicitor Taylor Anderson – Sun, Sea and CPSE’s It’s Friday, 6:00AM. I’m not usually up this early but I checked the surf forecast last night and it is pumping. I grab a coffee, my wetsuit and a change of clothes and slip out my flat without waking my flat mates. It’s 6:30AM now, I’m in the sea and spend the next 2 hours surfing Bournemouth Pier and catching up with the other regulars before it’s time to get ready for work. It’s not your conventional morning exercise but if you’re going to live and work on the South Coast making the most of the sea is a must. Usually, I’d go straight home after my session but I have a bit of printing to do in the office this morning so I walk up to the office, shower, get changed and I’m sat at my desk for 8:50 (yes my office is a 5 minute walk from the beach). I’m working in Commercial Property at Steele Raymond LLP Solicitors in Bournemouth. I spend the next hour printing and binding Leases and contracts which I will be taking to a client next week. It’s not the most exciting job but it is a trainee job. After everything in the office is sorted I’m working from home for the rest of the day. I make it back to the flat just in time for the Property Team meeting over Microsoft Teams. We do this twice a week just to make sure everyone is doing ok, monitor workloads and share our good news stories for the week or the weekend to come. It’s nice to share the positive stories, I get a kick out of that and it makes me feel part of a team even though I’m working remotely. After the meeting I check my to do list and spend the rest of the morning finalising a report on title. Once I’m happy it’s in final form I send it to Emma (my supervisor) to check. It’s about 13:00 now so it’s time for lunch, a baked potato, I still feel like a student sometimes then out for a quick walk to get in the sun. After lunch I spend some time checking through my emails and updating a spreadsheet for a project I’m working on, which

involves buying over 50 properties for one client. It’s important that we can convey to the client that we are on top of each file and it’s my job to demonstrate that by keeping tabs on each file and updating the spreadsheet with our progress. In the afternoon I’m answering some Commercial Property Standard Enquires (CPSE’s) for a property sale and drafting the property transfer but I’m unsure on what restrictive covenants to include. I call Emma for some guidance. Whilst she is very busy and doesn’t always answer the phone straight away, she always gets back to me the same day and if she’s not available, I can just call someone else. Even though I’m working from home I feel supported by my supervisor and my colleagues. There’s always someone to ask and I don’t feel isolated in the slightest. At about 4:30pm my mate Alex asks me if I want to go for a bike ride after work. After checking my to do list I’m pretty comfortable there is nothing else that needs my immediate attention today. At about 5:30pm I pack a bag with a few beers and my speaker, and we cycle over to Poole Harbour for the evening to watch the sunset. It’s been a busy week, but as I sit catching up on the week’s events whilst the sun dips behind Brownsea Island I can’t help but think there is no place I would rather be to see in the weekend. Time to go Electric? The tax regime for cars is designed to encourage the use of low emission vehicles and new rates have recently come into force for the current tax year. A diesel, petrol or hybrid company car is taxed as a benefit in kind and for the 21-22 tax year, depending on its CO2 emissions, the tax rate will be between 1% & 37% on the list price of the car. An electric company car is taxed at a rate of 1% going up to 2% from 6 April 2022 until the 5th April 2025. For businesses, a pure zero emission electric car can qualify for a 100% first year allowance when purchased new and unused, with this also now applying to zero emission vans. Commercial vehicles already qualified for 100% relief if falling within the Annual Investment Allowance. Cars with CO2 emissions not exceeding 50g/km will be added to the main pool for capital allowances purposes so attracting an 18% writing down allowance (WDA). Cars with emissions over 50g/km must be allocated to the special pool rate where the WDA is 6%. Companies can also benefit from the new super deduction offering 130% first year allowance on qualifying electric charging points for cars and vans where the charging point is used by their own business. (This is time restricted to 31 March 2023). Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates for pure electric vehicles have been reduced to £nil until at least 2025 with reduced rates for Plugin hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVS). Under existing Law, an electric vehicle will be viewed as a car for VAT purposes and therefore VAT is unlikely to be recoverable on purchase unless only available and used for business purposes. Similarly the existing VAT rules also apply for leasing purposes. Please contact Carla Hobby on 01202 715950 if you want advice on the tax treatment of electric vehicles. www.morrislane.co.uk

Greendale celebrates over 30 years in business by looking forward to new exciting challenges Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, who celebrated its 30th year in business in 2020, is looking forward to exciting new challenges having successfully negotiated the Covid-19 pandemic. With work halted on its sites across the South for a 2 month period as the country went into lockdown in March 2020, by mid-May 2020, Greendale was not only able to re-open sites (having put safe government stipulated procedures in place), but also continue with its expansion plans, and invest in its staff and training. In March 2020, Greendale opened its Winchester office headed up by Contract Manager/Quality Surveyor, Nick Child, taking on the role of Office Manager, with Andy Musselwhite, Director. Strategically, this has enabled the firm to expand its operating area and gain from opportunities eastwards into Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey and the M3 corridor. The commercial sector continues to be strong for Greendale, who reached completion on a number of high profile projects in its’ 30th year, including The Tank Museum, Bovington, and Acre Court housing improvement project in Andover for Aster. Electric vehicles trigger workwear revolution in automotive sector The ever-increasing trend towards electric and hybrid vehicles is demanding the motor trade to revolutionise how they clothe their staff. The automotive sector is rapidly changing, and “traditional car mechanics” are almost a thing of the past. The modern term for a mechanic, is a “Technician”, and with the rapid migration away from the combustion engine, many technicians have already been re-trained in order to maintain electric powered vehicles. However, the typical electric vehicle, (‘EV’) contains a deadly level of electrical charge. Therefore, the automotive sector is having to protect their technicians by re-clothing their teams in new PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) so they can carry out their work safely. Workwear manufacturers have developed many new ranges of head-to-toe protection meeting the rising demand to protect workers exposed to the high voltages now involved in vehicle maintenance. For example; Technician’s eyes need to be protected from potential ‘flash-over’ which can 46

June 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

be caused if an electrical spark is produced. This means that face shields now need to be worn when dealing with an EV. Most EV manufacturers also recommend that insulated rubber gloves should be worn when working near all high-voltage components, not just the vehicle batteries. Standard Latex gloves are not thick enough and do not provide sufficient protection from the shock hazard. It is also recommended that cotton under-gloves should be worn underneath electrical safety to give complete protection. Next, insulating rubber aprons should be worn to protect technicians working with live voltages up to 1 kilovolt. Finally, special ‘dielectric over-boots’ also have to be worn over existing footwear. These provide additional protection of insulation, preventing electric shocks should a vehicle technician encounter contact with a live electric source. Manufacturers have also /company/dorset-chamber/

designed specific non-metallic work boots and shoes to protect workers from electrical discharges up 18 kilo volts. Clearly, the increase in electric vehicles has impacted the new car manufacturers and regional dealerships the most to date. However, the first generation of electric and hybrid vehicles are now reaching the used car market, and many independent garages and repair centres will need to ensure that they upgrade their team’s PPE in the very near future. Workwear Pro Direct have been helping a number of regional automotive dealers to specify and source the correct PPE for use with electric vehicles and are happy to provide free advice to those who need assistance.

Leave your car at home twice a month for the good of the planet, urges MoreBus Switching one in 25 car journeys to public transport would save the UK two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions Public transport and active travel (walking and cycling) are part of the Government’s Green Ten Point Plan. Earth Day (22 April) encouraged individuals to think how they can help to Restore Our Earth. MoreBus, part of the Go-Ahead Group is urging motorists to consider a minor change in their travel habits to make a major difference to the planet this Earth Day. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, Go-Ahead is asking car commuters to consider leaving their vehicles at home just twice a month for the rest of the year and switch their journey to bus, rail or bicycle. Motorists typically make around 600 car journeys annually. Switching just one in every 25 of these journeys to a bus – equivalent to a couple of trips a month – would reduce the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by two million tonnes per year. This is in line with the UK government target for a reduction in 68% greenhouse gases by the end of the decade, and the Climate Change Committee’s recommendation of shifting from private cars to buses. Saving two million tonnes of carbon dioxide 48

June 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

emissions is equivalent to the environmental gain that would be made by switching every single one of the UK’s buses from diesel to zero emission energy sources, such as electricity or hydrogen. Katy Taylor, Go-Ahead’s Chief Strategy and Customer Officer, said: “Earth Day encourages us to think how we, as individuals, can reduce our impact on the world. Taking public transport is not only the environmental option; it is the best one for our own health and that of our communities. If everyone switched to the bus a couple of times a month, we could collectively rebuild our communities and enjoy the quieter streets from last April while avoiding a car-based recovery from the pandemic.“ Private cars account for 55% of greenhouse gas emissions from transport. Buses account for just 3% of emissions, and one double-decker bus has the potential to take as many as 75 cars off the road. In addition to being a benefit to the environment, public transport offers health advantages – people who commute typically get 25 minutes’ exercise a day by walking at either end of their journeys. /company/dorset-chamber/

DRIVEN Steve Bulley Head of Business Engagement at Dorset Chamber and car fanatic

Volkswagen’s first all-electric SUV has arrived and already been awarded the World Car of the Year gong in 2021. Following the compact ID.3 model, the ID.4 is now Volkswagen’s first electric model to be sold globally, and enters into the world’s largest market segment: the compact SUV class. The ID.4 1ST Edition boasts an impressive range of 310 miles from its 77-kWh battery capacity. It also benefits from rapid charging compatibility of up to 125 kW, with the ability to add up to 199 miles of range in just 30 minutes. With 204bhp of power instantly available, the rear-wheel drive ID.4 1ST reaches 62 mph in a respectable 8.5 seconds, although being larger and heavier its doesn’t feel as fast as the smaller ID.3 that I drove last year. Along with the 77-kWh battery in the version I have been driving there will be a 52-kWh power model which will see the range reduce to 213 on a full charge. Inside it’s all display screens. There is 5.3inch driver display a newly developed, 10-inch touch display provides access to a vast array of information. As with the latest bread of modern vehicles there is a distinct lack of physical

Volkswagen ID.4 First Edition

buttons with the touch screen controlling a majority of functionality. I have to say I have always found a physical button reassuring so this took some getting used to. On the road the coupe stance belies the size of the ID.4 which comfortable seats 5 adults and is the size of a Passat saloon inside with a good size boot for luggage or the family day out. The ride on the 20inch wheels was more comfortable than I expected and the ID.4 felt very self-assured on both A and B roads due to the floor mounted batteries. Worried about the batteries, don’t be. Volkswagen guarantees that the battery will still have at least 70% of its original capacity after eight years of operation or 100,000 miles. That’s significantly more than my smart phone after just a year. It is clear that Volkswagen expect to be serious mass players in the electric vehicle market with aspirations to produce 1.5 million electric cars per year by 2025. With the ID.4 and smaller ID.3 I think that number is conservative. The ID.4 First edition is available from £40,800 although a majority of buyers will lease or finance the purchase.

Not sporty enough for you? The new ID.4 GTX is on the way with sports styling and offering 295bhp and the dash to 62 in just 6.3 seconds. Thank you to Breeze Volkswagen for the use of the vehicle. For more information see www. breeze-volkswagen.co.uk or call the Breeze team on 01202 713000. See my review of the smaller ID.3 at www.drivenbysteve.co.uk

Geography really is no boundary! While the world has been locked down and human interaction has been drastically reduced or stopped for large parts of the last 12-18 months, graphic design company Design Pit has managed to secure a new international client. In a crazy year where many businesses were forced to close completely, Design Pit managed to carry on operating and serving clients and then, out of the blue, they received a recommendation and introduction to a law firm based in Barcelona, Catalunya in Spain. "We were recommended to Sayadi Law by a long-time associate and collaborator who is now living and working in Germany. They introduced us to Sayadi Law and we had some super exciting Zoom calls before kicking off with a Rebadge project where we refined their corporate logo." commented Design Pit founder and lead designer, Gareth Robertson. "After carefully crafting the evolution of the Sayadi Law logo into something more refined and balanced, we later began working on how that logo would be applied across their marketing assets. This included letter heading and stationery items, digital assets for LinkedIn, Instagram and email signatures. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

"The client loved the fact that they were dealing direct with me and I was the one actually doing the work. This is something clients really appreciate with Design Pit, they get a direct line to the studio with no account handlers or sales manager to go through. Just straight to the designer working on the job". Because of this, more project work filtered through as the Spanish law form began their relaunch at pace, trusting Design Pit with their identity and brand development. Gareth said: "We created a fully mobile responsive website design that integrated into their existing systems. The site needed to streamline processes and sync with their CRM that drives their business. Our design and build solution was perfect and we pressed ahead with the project. Everything website-wise was delivered within a two month window from design concepts to go live on the web. We also created a booklet that is used as a downloadable PDF from the site". CEO of Sayadi Law, Roya Sayadi commented, “Design Pit went the extra mile to learn about our goals and ambitions for Sayadi Law before creating truly exceptional designs that look

incredible. Our identity is vital as we specialise in intellectual property rights and trademark protection, so it is important that our own brand is strong, eye catching and fit for our audience". In the year of lockdown, this boutique creative company that has recently relocated to South West is proving that geography really is no boundary! And despite being unable to meet face to face, technology has allowed businesses in different countries to reach each other and work on complex and delicate projects that have produced fantastic results!

Dorset steel spans Atlantic A landmark government building designed and made in Dorset has opened in Belmopan, the capital of Belize in Central America. Structural steel firm John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) manufactured steel sections in Christchurch before shipping them 5,000 miles to Belmopan. They were used to construct the Government of Belize’s new headquarters for its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration. REIDsteel – which has exported to more than 140 countries to date – also provided glazing and cladding with innovative panels to give the building a modern and stylish look. Business development manager Pepe Oliva said: “The new headquarters is a very smart building which creates an excellent first impression. “We used perforated aluminium panelling in a variety of shapes and sizes on its façade to create a contemporary yet corporate look worthy of its status as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ new headquarters. “It was a pleasure to work with our local partners on this landmark project in a country and region where we have such strong relationships.”

more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Pepe added: “It is nice to think that steel from Dorset is now on the other side of the world having travelled more than 5,000 miles by sea. “Logistically, it is a tried and tested process with sections fabricated at our manufacturing facility in Christchurch, packed in shipping containers on site and then transported by road to the appropriate port for shipping.” REIDsteel worked with International Environments Limited, the leading design build and architecture firm in Belize on the project for the Government of Belize. The 130-strong firm used 65 tonnes of steel, including 12 tonnes of cold rolled steel, with products from its preferred supplier British Steel. Kingspan Dri-Design panels were used on the exterior. A total of 32 shipping containers were used to transport the sections to Belize where they were assembled by International Environments Ltd. Like REIDsteel’s other structures in the region, the new offices were designed to be earthquake and hurricane resistant. REIDsteel has completed many projects in

the Caribbean and Central America over its 102 years of trading, including the $32.9 million Belize Dollars (£12.7m) Belize Civic Center in 2017. Belmopan is the capital city of Belize and has a population of more than 20,000 people. Belize, which borders Mexico and Guatemala, is on the Caribbean Sea and gained Independence from Great Britain in 1981. REIDsteel specialises in providing entire steel frame and building envelope solutions all under one roof. Thanks to its in-house capabilities and expertise, it is regularly contracted to design, manufacture and supply complete steel structures including the cladding, glazing, louvres and staircases for projects anywhere in the UK, Europe and across the world. They include bridges, hospitals, sports stadia, disaster resilient buildings, defensive structures, churches, schools, industrial & commercial buildings, warehouses and advanced aircraft hangars. www.reidsteel.com

Precision Acoustics named Design Team of the Year Precision Acoustics Limited has been named Design Team of the Year winners in the prestigious British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEAs). The BEEAs recognise and celebrate innovative British engineering design. Precision Acoustics entered the Design Team of the Year category for which nominees had to illustrate teamwork in creating an engineering or electronic product or system. They had to demonstrate the team’s composition and interaction, how they worked within a target budget and how well the team met project milestones, with emphasis on problem solving. Precision Acoustics’ winning entry was the reDRESS project. They had worked in close collaboration with Ionix Advanced Technologies, TWI Ltd and the University of Sheffield, across a period of 21 months.

54

June 2021 | Dorset Business Focus

The goal of the reDRESS project was to construct a reliable ultrasonic testing sensor that offered an alternative to commercially available ultrasonic sensors, which have limitations in terms of temperature and radiation exposure. High radiation, in particular, can cause failure of such sensors. Each partner brought their own areas of expertise, and Precision Acoustics’ input was the design of a radiation resilient ultrasonic transducer range (RRUT) based around piezopolymer sensing elements. The resulting sensor will allow inspections to be made close to the core of nuclear reactors, an extremely hot (>350°C) environment with high radiation

levels. A heat and radiation resilient ultrasonic sensor like this will push the maximum operating window (in terms of temperature and radiation) of piezopolymer and piezoceramic ultrasound transducers for defined periods of time. The BEEA judges said, “As part of the reDRESS project, Precision Acoustics brought together different scientific principles to deliver an outstanding and innovative product.” Gary Livingstone, Managing Director of Precision Acoustics, commented on their win, “Well done to our amazing team at Precision Acoustics. This is a fantastic achievement for all those involved in the project.” www.acoustics.co.uk
