This is it. The culmination of 5 years of blood sweat and tears (plenty of sweat & tears, only a little bit of blood, see issue #1, pg 24, Sept. 2005)

Let us know what you want to see in here. Keep in mind we are a small operation with a limited budget and most of that budget goes to printing thousands upon thousands of mags for all you readers( and late night pizza runs.) One of the answers I get a lot from the guys (and some girls) is “BRING BACK THE MONTHLY MAGX CALENDAR GIRLS.” I have mixed feelings about this. Every other magazine out there has taken the MAGX CALENDAR GIRL concept and run with it. That’s one of the reasons I stopped doing it. Once everyone else starts copying your formula, you are no longer unique. I’ll think it over though. Any other suggestions? We want to hear them! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A GREAT 5 YEARS! - Ramsey 956-648-4464 Ramsey@magxonline.com

With their brand of catchy POP, HARDCORE, PUNK, and their crazy energy at live shows, They influenced a generation of kids, and everyone from ALL TIME LOW to FALLOUT BOY. Now get ready to see them on SEPTEMBER 9th at LAS PALMAS EVENT CENTER in McAllen TX! We caught up with Jordan Pundik, Vocalist for New Found Glory to dissect his brain and see what makes him tick. Mmmmmm, brains.... MAGX: Who or What inspired you guys to start making music? Jordan Pundik: What inspired us to play was that where we lived, NOTHING WAS GOING ON. We lived in the burbs. We all had a common bond over going to shows, punk, and hardcore. We wanted to do the same thing. MAGX: Looking back on the last 12/13 years of this, what is your favorite part about the whole MAGX • 8

experience? JP: For me looking back, I never thought we would make it out of Florida. But we did. It's pretty amazing that I've been able to see so many different places and things because of the band. MAGX: If you weren't in NEW FOUND GLORY, what do you think you would you be? Astronaut? Jordan Pundik M.D.?

JP: I would have probably continued going to school or something. I was going for graphic design. It was only a semester though. Then we got asked to open up a string of FLA shows for MXPX. Then a 2 week tour with reel big fish. I said "Hey school! Smoke ya later!" MAGX: Of all the NFG songs, which is your personal favorite? Why? JP: My personal fave is "sonny" my MAGXONLINE.COM

grandfather passing away inspired that song. It's close to my heart. Kids come up to me all the time saying that it helped them through someone close to them passing away. MAGX: Is there plans for a new album? JP: Of course! Going to probably start Recording in January. MAGX: Do you guys plan out what your albums will sound like or do you just let it happen? JP: We always let it happen. Were a real band. We obviously have a vision of how we want it to "sound" but that's all studio magic. The songs though are always what feels right and true to who we are. MAGX: What do you do on your down time?

Fave album: my bloody valentine "loveless" Fave album cover: Andrew WK "I get wet" nothing beats a dudes face real big with a bloody nose! Fave song of all time: too many to pick just one!

JP: On my down time, I tattoo, draw designs for bands merch, hang with my lady and dog, go to target, the movies, take care of my house, hang with family, hike, and surf.

Blondes or Brunettes? Brunettes

MAGX: How did the collaboration with Zombie legend George Romero come about for the video "DON’T LET HER PULL YOU DOWN"?

Favorite Movie: Inglorious Basterds

Favorite Food: Sushi

Favorite Comic Book Character: Rick from "The Walking Dead" Most Prized Possesion: My skeleton key on my necklace. Star Wars or Star Trek: Star Wars Favorite ZOMBIE Movie: Lucio Fulci's "ZOMBIE" MAGX • 9

MAGXONLINE.COM

JP: We knew we wanted to have that “cheap “B” movie" look, which isn't a bad thing! It's awesome. I wish we could have made it more gory though. MAGX: So how long would you guys survive if a zombie plague erupted and over took most of the world? What would be the secret to your survival? JP: I think I would know what to

MAGX • 10

do. I've been into zombies and horror for a long time. My secret would be to stay up high. Pack a lot of heat (from breaking into gun shops), and also find anything in the form of a shovel or chain saw or lawn mower. MAGX: If you were granted a super power by some alien intelligence, what would you want it to be?

JP: I would have an invisibility power. That would totally help during a zombie attack too! MAGX: HAHA, Good One! Thanks for your time Jordan! See you at Las Palmas Event Center on Sept. 9th! JP: Thanks man. Look forward to playing a longer set!!!

The Black Veil Brides are one of the fastest rising rock bands today. Their rabid fan base and total devotion to their craft has earned them massive recognition thorough out the industry as well as hoards of fans all over the world. The band in its first form originated in Cincinatt, Ohio. Since then singer Andy Six has relocated to Hollywood, CA in true rock star form to find the missing pieces to the puzzle. In 2009 the band completed its line up and has performed many shows to positive reviews and enthusiastic crowds. The band became wildly famous for the single Knives and Pens which as of August 2010 has recieved over 14,000,000 views on YouTube. In February of 2010 the band began recording their debut album with producer Blasko (Rob Zombie, Ozzy Osbourne). We spoke with bassist Ashley Purdy on the band’s successess, life on the road, and their army of fans. MAGXONLINE.COM

How do you feel your band has done since its first incarnation in 2006? Words can’t really explain it. Every day we are taken by surprise at how many people are into us. Our fans are simply amazing really just seeing how strong our following is becoming. I’ve heard your name was inspired by the catholic church, how so? It’s more of a term from the Roman-Catholic Church when

you are deemed a Black Veil Bride you give up all the carnal temptations of life to marry a church. It’s really just like devotion to your belief. It’s just like rock’n’roll for us. We have literally sacrificed everything for this band and for what we believe in. What inspired the titled We Stitch These Wounds? The name comes from lessons learned. We all have these markings on our faces when we perform kind of like what KISS does. Andy our singer carries a scar MAGX •12

mean it’s not just finding someone who can play but someone who has the look we’re looking for, the showmanship to put on a quality show, and just to fit in overall. tthe lineup we have now For me, the members we have now is almost like an allstar line up. I couldn’t ask for anyone better to play with. What was it like recording with Blasko? Amazing! He goes above and beyond the call of duty for a manager. [Blasko] Coming from a band that was theatrical and very visual he totally understands what we do and where we want to go. He’s fully involved knows exactly what we’re doing. He’s really a perfect match for us. How was the Hot Topic tour?

By: Frank

and stitch on his face. It’s symbolism. It’s almost like remember the past and learn from your mistakes. It’s like a healing process and also a growing process. The band has had a few lineup changes has that affected the band at all? It’s happened, but we’ve only grown from all of it. That’s just something that happens with any band really. Especially one like this one with a direct concept. It takes a while to find the complete right members. I MAGXONLINE.COM

It was the Sacred Ceremony tour, our very fist headlining tour across the US and Hot Topic was gracious enough to get behind it. It was really an amazing experience we saw sold out shows and got to see how our demographic has grown. You have a big festival coming up playing along side HUGE BANDS are you nervous? It is a huge event it’s September 26 we’re playing a festival for KRock in LA. We’re going to be playing alongside acts like 30 Seconds to Mars and Blink-182 it will also be the largest crowd we’ve ever had a chance to play. It’s gonna be amazing to us. I just think that our music carrys enough lines to gain exposure to a totally different fan and enter other genre’s fans. At times though it can be tough people can judge us on how we look and toss our credibility out the

window. We will eventually win them over with our showmanship. Most bands of this generation don’t take the time to have an image, do you feel it is important for your band to have a certain aesthetic? Well yes man. We grew up on KISS, GUNS’N’ROSES, WASP, MOTLEY CRÜE. Those are our influences! It was always cool to see those bands that have an image or concept behind them. It’s something you can identify with go with. When you’re young people look at you are instantly attracted physically. It’s really just the sort of people that we are. The main thing is that rockstars no long exist! The showman ship is gone! I think the last rockstar we’ve had recently was [Marilyn] Manson. All of us have truly been bored with music for the last decade. We wanted to create a band that we would go see.

can call your own. This band isn’t just 5 members, it’s made up of our entire army of fans. We stand up for all people. Our fans are diehard though and we love them so much. We do get many shows where they are crying and tell us their issues. It’s a healthy and safe outlet. What is one thing you would like BVB to be remembered for? I think again just being that band that fans in the world know are their for them. Something that lets them know they are a part of something that’s bigger than themselves. Something they can feel apart of.

There was a quote from a fan’s page “I totally love Andy’s voice. I almost cried when I was watching them last night.” what do compliments like that make you feel? Our fan base means so much to us! We have a younger demographic at the core. So we really try our best to stay active online, hear them out, and try to help them out with some of their problems. We know who we are, we’re the band for the outcasts. We’ll stand up for you. We’ll be the band that you MAGX •13

A dark cloud has come over the animation industry. Wow, sounds like a line from a novel doesn’t it…mustn’t get sidetracked focus, focus. Where was I…oh yes a dark cloud has come over the animation industry. And, this darkness is the result of the loss of a great man that the industry has known for over 19 years and who has been directing since 1997. His death comes to us as a tragic loss. A death that is too soon to be had at the age of 46 Satoshi was still in his prime whose vision of reality and fantasy allowed him to create artistic masterpieces of animation. The images that fell upon the screen were mesmerizing and an eye that showed no boundaries when it came to his directing. Kon was born in 1963 on the island of Hokkaido. He started college wanting to become a painter and debuted as a comic writer at the age of twenty-three while still in college at the Musashino University of Art in Tokyo. He began making animated films in 1990, establishing a style that blurred the boundaries of reality and fantasy. He worked for Katushiro Otomo on the manga titled “World Apartment Horror.” He also worked as a set designer for the

film “Roujin Z” in which Otomo was the screenwriter and mechanical engineer. His early work was strongly influenced by Otomo due to his many years working with him. He continued by working as a screenwriter for the film “Magnetic Rose” which was within an anthology called Memories. In the year of 1997 he made his directorial debut with the film Perfect Blue. A film that dealt with the life of a young singer/actress who her fans felt she betrayed them for going into a field that she did not start in. After the success of his first film he made several others that did as well and put him on the map as a revolutionary in the anime industry as a director. Kon’s work dealt with themes that ranged in the psychological well-being of his characters. In 2003 “Tokyo Godfathers” which was loosely based on the 1948 John Ford film “3 Godfathers” was nominated for an Oscar and had his most comedic story lines. This film explored heavier themes of personal guilt, loss and suicidal ideation. His later films like Millennium Actress and Paprika drew great attention to themes blurred by the boundaries

of reality and fantasy in the story. Examples being that they (the characters) broke the fourth wall and performed actions that could not have been done in the actual real world. His final film titled “Paprika” that was based on the novel written by Yasutaka Tsutsui used breathtaking cutting-edge animation won an award at the Brussels animation festival in 2007 he was working on his first children’s animation titled “The Dreaming Machine” at the time of his death which was brought on by pancreatic cancer. His death was nothing he himself didn’t know was coming he had spoken to his doctor and decided that even after all the medication and treatments he went through knew he was not going to live past the year. He chose to live out the rest of his days at home so he can be at peace and with his family. He stated that his only regret was he felt sorry for his last film and the staff that worked hard on it. He was living on borrowed time and decided to give a “Goodbye” statement on his website which was written in Japanese I’ll be including this statement in a different posting. All, I can say to this

tragic loss is that if you have not seen Kon’s work I recommend you do and look at it the same way we all did who have seen his earlier work and accept the vision this great man had of reality and fantasy all his own. I know that I’ll be doing the same and I know that in my heart what I write doesn’t do him justice I mean the life this man lived can’t be conveyed on a small article. So I say to you that in order to truly understand the man who brought his vision to the screen is to see his works and enjoy them as much as I did and hopefully his legacy will live on and continue to inspire more people to take up the work of anime and express themselves with their own piece of individuality. The cancer may have taken a great man but it hasn’t taken away his vision and dreams of what he wanted to give to us and with that I am happy I was able to see his work and that makes me glad to be a fan of anime. So Satoshi Kon wherever you are I say this in your native tongue arregato gozaimasu and sayonara gomeifuku wo inorimasu…Darth Chew

How could I forget, May 18th of this year. I received the following pronouncement from a cardiovascular doctor at Musashino Red Cross Hospital. “It’s the latter stages of pancreatic cancer. It’s metastasized to several bones. You have at the most half a year left to live.” My wife and I listened together. It was a fate so unexpected and untenable, that the two of us together could barely take it. I used to honestly think that “I can’t help it if I die any day.” Still, it was so sudden. To be sure, there were some signs. 2 to 3 months before that I’d had strong pains in several places on my back and in the joints of my legs; I’d lost strength in my right leg and found it hard to walk, and I’d been going to an acupuncturist and a chiropractor, but I wasn’t getting any better. So after having been examined in an MRI and a PET-CT and

such advanced machinery, came the sudden pronouncement of the time I had left. It was as if death had positioned itself right behind me before I knew it, and there was nothing I could do. After the pronouncement, my wife and I researched ways to prolong my life. It was literally a life or death situation. We received the support of staunch frends and strong allies. I rejected anti-cancer medication, and tried to live with a view of the world slightly different from the norm. The fact that I rejected what was “expected (normal)” seemed to me to be very much like me. I’ve never really felt that I belonged with the majority. It was the same for medical care, as with anything else. “Why not try to keep living according to my own principles!” However, as is the case when I’m trying to create a work [a film], ones willpower alone didn’t do the job. The illness kept progressing day by day.

On the other hand, as a member of society, I do accept at least half of what society in general holds to be right. I do pay taxes. I’m far from being an upstanding citizen, but I am a full member of Japanese society. So, aside from the things I needed to do to prolong my life from my own point of view, I also attempted to do all the things necessary to “be ready to die properly”. I don’t think I managed to do it properly though. (But) one of the things I did was, with the cooperation of 2 friends that I could trust, set up a company to take care of things like the measly number of copyrights that I hold. Another thing that I did was, to insure that my wife would take over any modest assets that I had smoothly by writing a will. Of course, I didn’t think there would be any fighting over my legacy or anything, but I wanted to make sure that my wife, who would remain behind in this world, would have nothing to worry about - and besides, I

wanted to remove any anxiety from myself, the one who was going to take a little hop over there, before I had to leave. The paperwork and research necessary for these tasks, which neither my wife nor I were good at doing, were taken care of speedily by wonderful friends. Later on, when I developed pneumonia and was at death’s door, and put my final signature on the will, I thought that if I died right then and there, it couldn’t be helped. “Ah...I can die at last.” After all, I’d been brought by ambulance to the Musashino Red Cross Hospital 2 days before that; then brought back again to the same hospital by ambulance the day after. Even I had to be hospitalized and undergo many examinations. The result of those examinations: pneumonia, water in my chest, and when I asked the doctor [straight out], the answer I received was very businesslike, and I was in a way grateful for that...

There are many talented local rappers. Then there are some that stand out above the rest, that know that HARD WORK & DETERMINATION coupled with a well-honed craft and sound, will get you to the top. That Dirty Mexican ZOE is one of them. There is a certain HUSTLE that is required to move up in the ranks of HIP-HOP and a struggle that comes along with it. TDM ZOE knows this. His aptly-titled record label MEAN HUSTLE is a statement. A statement that tells everyone he isn’t afraid of HARD WORK and getting his hands dirty to get to where he wants to be. MAGX: Where did you grow up and did it contribute to your love for rap? TDM ZOE: I was born and raised until the age of 12 in Corpus Christi in the projects on the North Side. I won't say that is the reason why I love rap, because I did lived in Mission until I was 18, and most people here in the Valley are into Spanish music. But the truth is, I like all types of music, even Spanish, as long as its real. MAGX: Tell me how you came up in the Rap scene. TDM ZOE: Hard work and dedication! This game isn't easy. It took a lot of sacrifice and even still. I work my life around my job. MAGX: For those who haven't heard you, If you had to compare your style MAGX • 20

TDM ZOE: On every song that I work on, I target an audience. Then, I think of how I can touch that audience. Its poetry to me. I'm not just rhyming. A lot of people are turned off from rap/hip-hop because they think its a bunch of nonsense, I spit conscious rap. It make sense if you listen. MAGX: What upcoming shows do you have?
