At MAGX we love TECHNOLOGY. So until it rises up against us in the form of cyborgs and forces us underground like rodents, we will keep embracing it! So, in this issue we introduce to you a really cool new techno-thingy. You may have noticed a little square barcode looking thing on the corner of this issues cover and on some of our advertisers pages. These are called “QR-codes.” “QR” is short for QUICK RESPONSE. Much like the barcodes that get scanned and bring up information on the products you buy, QR-Codes bring up information such as maps, contact info, websites and more instantly! I know what you are thinking. “How am I supposed to scan these things? I’m not a cyborg!” Well you probably have magical cyborg-like powers in your pocket right now. If you are like most of us, you probably have a cell phone with you 24/7 and Chances are that cell phone is a “SMART PHONE” such as an IPHONE, ANDROID phone or a BLACKBERRY. Just download a QR app such as “BARCODE SCANNER” for android, scan one of these and you are now officially techo-cool. It’s easy and fun and soon you will find them everywhere you look. We are forward thinkers. We want to stay one step ahead of all the other local mags, but i’m sure next month all of them will start doing this too. It’s a great way to get more information on something that interests you. Imagine seeing an ad for a concert, soon you will be able to scan it and buy tickets instantly. The possibilities are endless! For now, technology remains our friend. It’s fun, convenient and readily available so enjoy it... before it gets out of our control and blows up the world! Want us to set your Business up with your very own QRCODE? Call us at 956.648.4464! This issue, we bring you the MAGX 2010 REWIND. We have had a great year of awesome interviews. We count down the best for you here. Scan the code and you will be taken directly to the full interview on your phone. So whip out your smart phone, download a QR app and start scanning. According to WIKIPEDIA, “A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists

of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data. Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of twoMAGAZINE X #61 • DECEMBER 2010 • PG.8

dimensional barcodes. QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging). QR Codes can be used to display text to the user, to add a vCard contact to the user’s device, to open a URI or to compose a text message or email. Users can also generate and print their own QR Code for others to scan and use by visiting one of several free QR Code generating sites. Frank C. Hudetz, a US Marketing Services Professional, claims to have invented the idea of mapping bar codes to a URL.

QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards, or on just about any object about which users might need information. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR Code to display text, contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a web page in the phone’s browser. This act of linking from physical world objects is known as a hardlink or physical world hyperlinks. Google’s mobile Android operating system supports the use of QR codes by natively including the barcode scanner (ZXing) on some models, and the browser supports URI redirection, which allows QR Codes to send metadata to existing applications on the device. Nokia’s Symbian operating system is also provided with a barcode scanner, which is able to read QR Codes, while mbarcode is a QR code reader for the Maemo operating system. In the Apple iOS a QR Code reader is not natively included, but some iTunes Apps, for free, are available with reader and metadata browser URI redirection.” Now imagine the possibilities for a second. The QR-Code opens up a whole new interactive world for smart phone users. Now navigation, phone numbers,

pictures, almost any kind of information can be accessed instantly. Imagine scanning a sign that has a QR-CODE as you enter South Padre Island that gives you the weather forcast, the best fishing spots, restaurant / bar specials & reviews, alerts and more. How convenient would that be? And thats not even scratching the surface of what is possible with these suckers. This issue, we have included QR-CODES on some of our advertisers links that will help you navigate to or get you a little more info on their establishments. We included a link on this month’s music interview that pulls up her music video on youtube. We are still experimenting with them to get you the best MAGX experience possible, so sit back, pull out your smart phone and scan away.

presents

IT ISN’T EVERY DAY THAT WE AT MAGX GET A CHANCE TO INTERVIEW A SOUL SINGER BUT, CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SINGER COREY JORDAN IS ONE TRULY UNIQUE ARTIST. SHE DRAWS MOST OF HER INSPIRATION FROM SOUL, R&B, AND MOTOWN. SHE TAKES THE TIME TO ACTUALLY CONVERSE WITH HER FANS VIA FACEBOOK AND TWITTER. SHE LOVES RECORDING COVER SONGS FOR YOUTUBE. SHE’S GOING TO COLLEGE AS WE SPEAK. ABOVE ALL THAT SHE IS A VERY INSPIRATIONAL ARTIST AND ONE OF THE MOST DOWN TO EARTH PERFORMERS I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF INTERVIEWING. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, LOOK HER UP ON YOUTUBE AND ENJOY THE SOUNDS OF JORDAN COREY AND ALL SHE HAS TO OFFER. You are an up and coming star in music, how hard is it to work in the condition of the industry? Many people are starting to realize that we’re goin through a transition in the industry. We’re going from the traditional record label system to a more social one; I already had a good grasp on that coming into to this. Primarily what we’re doing is marketing via social media. it’s the best way to engage with your fanbase which is something I genuinely enjoy. Your sound is a nice soulful blend of pop and r&b, why did you chose this over say a straight pop track? I started writing music at 14. The piano is the first instrument I learned to play which is MAGAZINE X #61 • DECEMBER 2010 • PG.10

what got me into a soul phase. Most of my inspiration comes mostly from soul, motown , and classic rock. When it came time to create this EP I really wanted to capture all those things. The last thing I wanted to do is cookie cutter white girl pop (laughs). So I chose to bring in some of my other background and twinges of genres that I enjoy. Your single “Truth” sounds like it was written from a personal experience. What was the inspiration behind it? With Truth, I was working with an extremely talented song writer. We were going over this song and everything about I just identifyed and clicked with. I think it captures really well the blissfulness of the beginning stages of love.

I’ve seen you on YouTube doing covers from Lady Gaga to La Roux to Estelle; Do you enjoy recording these covers for YouTube? I love doing covers! When I was 16 I was in a classic rock cover band. We thought were super cool. We won a battle of the bands and everything. I like giving odes to my favorite artists and sharing what I enjoy with my audience. It’s a great thing for new artists to do covers it helps you reach a new audience everytime. Which has been your favorite cover you’ve recorded? I love “Valerie”. I have a sick addiction to Amy Winehouse. La Roux was a pretty cool one, we just kind of went into it . I’m so not and electro signer! I didn’t even know how to do it. I went in and I said f*ck it! Let’s do some acoustic stuff on it. It turned out great. It’s sick. What has the experience been like goin from independant writer to shooting music videos and all?

I started it in 3rd grade and I totally hated it. I was super shy. But as theater kid growing up it opened me up to newer genres of music, and for that i am glad I did it. What has been the best show you have been a part of? I’ve done a lot of them! Right now I go to UCSB I was in a soul reggae funk band here. We had this sick show here in Santa Barbara at a small dive. There are some insane shows in Santa Barbara man! It was the sickest show. I really love all my shows though. What do you hope to get out of playing music? I’m hoping to make it a long lasting career. I sort of process things in my life through music. I can’t think of my life without thinking about music. I’m really just hoping to make a long career out of music, music that I love and music I am passionate about.

It’s a really different experience. I’m no longer in my living room. It’s a whole diff experience we went in last August to record and really start promotion and just as it started it has kept goin’. I really love it everything about this lifestyles suits me. You seem to have a HUGE twitter following, do you think it’s important to become personal with your fans? I think so. Especially in this age where you have the ability to do that. I make it a point to comment back when they are talking ot me. You should show them respect. If someone were writing a biography about you, what is one fact you wouldn’t want them to leave out? I really have no clue! One fact for sure is that back in the day I grew up doing musical theatre. Honestly, we had a big discussion about this. We’ve gone to the Arctic (A Beautiful Lie) and to the People’s Republic of China (From Yesterday) for videos. For us, when we make videos, the journey and experience is equally if not more important than the end result. We made the record in LA so we decided to create this visual love letter to our city with the Crank Mob (a critical mass biking club). Jared really dove into that world. We all fell in love with the idea of it. What a cool way to sort of reclaim a public place. The video is really more about the people and the scenes rather than just the band. To shoot LA in a beautiful light at night was just gorgeous. (BUT)... you can’t really just shut down streets in LA and have it be smooth and easy. I can say of all the videos this was the most fun to do. We were just kinda writing bikes downtown LA at midnight. It wasn’t the usual 20 hour days or anything like that. The bikers were especially stoked. We truly took over the streets. I was really trying to become a man. I took a step on my own just trying to live my own life. I made money the wrong way and because I lived that lifestyle I knew that I was coming to a dead end. I didn’t want to live with mom and didn’t really want to impose on friends. So my thoughts were I have a truck and I’m gonna have to figure it out. I was out for 6 weeks trying to find my way. So essentially it was all by choice. I wanted to know how can I become a strong man and stand on my own. I was out all day and night selling mixtapes I pressed. Eventually with the money I was making with my mixes some friends and I decided to pitch in and ended up getting a pretty nice town house.

“Our freshman and sophomore years are when Devaughn and I really started to excel, but it was in our junior year of high school when we started getting offers from Division I schools. Kentucky was the first to offer us a scholarship, but we chose Florida State,” said Darling. I Did! He was a pretty accomplished singer but I was surprised he wasn’t able to play an instrument. So I told him “Dude, you need to learn to play something to accompany yourself.” So I began to teach him a few things on guitar and he picked it up right away. He would just sit on my couch and strum the same chords over and over. I’ve known Jack for about 20 years now. Shit! I’m getting old how did that happen!

This is the first visit to the RGV for Deftones in 10 years. What do you have to tell the people of McAllen?

I think it was Halloween, I was dressed like a woman. Chi was a pimp and I was a hooker. I remember that night vividly. We found a Halloween store in Mcallen and ended up buying a bunch of stuff. I saw a video clip not to long ago of that show. We were filming a movie about that tour at the time. A movie that never came out. (haha) We had a clip of me dressed in make up dressed as a woman rocking on the drums. Thats such a great memory. We’re so stoked to come back. MAGAZINE X #61 • DECEMBER 2010 • PG.15

You’ve played in some pretty big football games in front of 10’s of thousands of people, How does being on stage compare?

The rush is the same. It’s different in the opponent you face obviously. You’re not going against 300 pound defensive lineman, but you are facing an opponent. You’re going against yourself, trying to play the perfect show to please the fans. Trying to please the fans is also something we’re competing with every night.

I didn’t and I kinda wished I would’ve been able to keep a glove. I always do that after I leave a movie, It’s like “ah shoot I should’ve...Why didn’t I keep a Rorshach head?” Now it’s like “darn, I really should’ve kept the glove.” Maybe I could still get at it. I’ve got to tell you man THE GLOVE IS AWESOME. I mean these guys really designed the heck out of it. It is a bit heavy but it wasn’t so heavy that you couldn’t wield it. It was just perfect. It was really detailed and articulated. The thing was kinda pointy you could really hurt someone with it.

amazing. When was the last time you were star struck? That kind of wore off many years ago but i met definitley when I met Rob Halford at night club back in PANTERA days. MAGX # 59 Oct 2010 What can we expect from the new album ,what’s the title and why? It’s a lot faster than the previ-

Many people are comparing it to what we used to sound like and well it’s ridiculously fast but then again some of the melodies are reminiscent of Dusk…and Her Embrace and Cruelty and the Beast which is really good. The new album is called Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa and Dani based the entire album on the character Lilith it really goes on to tell you a story. I tell you what I can do is give you a break down of the tracks at the end of the interview otherwise I would be here for flippin’’’ hours!
