Falling in love with Italy is easy to do, and when you combine that with an indian wedding, it was a clear winner that this wedding had captured our editorial teams’ hearts. Weddings right now are a challenging industry, changing faster than ever before, and Indian weddings add a whole other layer of complexity. Multiple vendors, changing locations, and the need for new skills drove weddings in 2021. “Working in Weddings” means something entirely different than it did a decade ago. My team and I are constantly discussing these changes, gathering around a tables when we can, mostly over zoom, and constantly on email, chat and WhatsApp. There has been a lot of feedback, now more than ever, that we want to start to imagine a new kind of wedding industry, one that would help brides and vendors collaborate in a better way. We have read more than a thousand bridal questionnaires & submissions, spoke to brides all over the world in all different demographics, and the one underlying theme we saw is that brides and families will not let anything gstand in the way of their wedding day. So, no matter how many iterations of this virus we see, brides, families, and vendors

And, if you get close enough to your screen you can almost hear the waves crashing. The age old advice of “maybe you will meet someone at the wedding” paid off for these two, when sparks flew and it is still unclear who initially approached whom. Akshay had grand plans for his proposal to Naomi, but after a few details went by the wayside, the classic combination of a knee, a beach and a ring once again worked it’s magic. Fortunate enough to make a trip to Bombay before COVID was everywhere, Naomi had her eye on a one of a kind look. Her personal style is more reflective of neutrals & dark colors so the idea of wearing traditional, bright bridal colors didn’t feel natural to her. After mapping out stores and revisiting places with lenghas that really made her heart sing, she went with a piece that made her find her bridal flare. Her outfits became the cornerstone of the event decor and all the designs were centered around them. The bride always had her heart set on an outdoor ceremony. A fall wedding in New York didn’t make it possible so the team of designers brought the outdoors, indoors for an ultra dramatic look. A few larger trees came together to create the central canopy, and were flanked by dozens of branches, greenery, and loads of cream and white mixed flowers. Soft lighting created the ambiance and everyone was blown away by the transformation of the ballroom.

“We both played equal parts in wedding planning which made us feel like we had a shared project and true partnership. We both brought our strengths to the table and added creative elements to our events that reflected our personalities. For example, my husband's a gamer, so he put together a playlist of video game jazz covers for our cocktail hour, which also featured custom cocktails named with Gujarati puns (Majama-rita anyone?) that made everyone smile.”

When you know, you just KNOW. This couple knew from the moment they were engaged they wanted to have a destination wedding in Cancún because it's where they took their very first trip together. Although the Pandemic threw off their original plans of getting married in December of 2020, the couple took a gamble and bet on May 2021 in the hopes of increasing chances that everyone would be vaccinated and be able to safely attend. And, much to our delight they won! Working with Shaadi Destinations to choose Generations Riviera Maya/El Dorado and coordinate guest travel and itineraries made their dream wedding a reality. The Shaadi team was extremely flexible and very helpful with moving around dates, party locations, guest arrivals and departures and the list goes on and on. It is a challenge to reschedule anything these days, let alone an entire destination Indian wedding! Generations/El Dorado is an one of a kind property in Riviera Maya, located a bit further south from the hectic Cancun Hotel Zone. Featuring existing South Asian motifs the resort is the perfect backdrop for Indian weddings. To add to the list of ease, they have a wonderful on-site Indian Restaurant, Haab, that catered all of the Indian food items for their wedding. Generations/ El Dorado is known for Chef Kaushal who uses fresh ingredients grown on site. It was important to the bride to make sure that her bridal outfits matched the overall theme and decor for each event. The Sangeet was filled with many bright colors so an outfit from Aisha Rao became the natural choice. The bride’s wedding lengha was a beautiful shade of deep crimson with peach and green floral accents that matched the floral decor of the mandap. For the reception, she donned a dusty pink lengha that had mirror work which danced under the fairy lights. What a breath of fresh air! Congratulations to the beautiful pair!

This wedding is as dreamy as dreamy gets. The couple met on the dance floor of their respective best friend’s wedding and after some good old fashioned social media flirting the couple started dating. A special snorkeling spot in Maui lead to surprise proposal on the beach and the bride resoundingly said yes. Leaning in, the couple worked with a local Italian wedding planner, Bespoke Unique Weddings and Events to help with venue sourcing and selecting local vendors. They only brought their DJ and photographer from the states as they had already worked with them in the past. The couple added some sweetness to their celebration with a traditional Italian wedding cake and gelato bar. Yum! “At Haldi, my marathi family was insistent on doing a Lezim entrance for me, where all of them do a Lezim procession to welcome me into the Haldi stage. Being more of a lowkey person, I was hesitant, but am SO GLAD that I said yes. It was so fun and unique since Kunal's side is Gujarati and had never seen anything like it. They loved it so much that they had us do another Lezim procession to bring Kunal into his Grah Shantak ceremony later that day!”

These two are sweet. And we say that, not just because they met in college while getting ice cream, but because along their dating path of tough exams, job interviews, successes, disappointments, and milestones, they realized they are each other’s home. The bride’s best friend and a photographer asked the pair to model for her portfolio and suddenly in the middle of posing in a variety of dips and twirls, the groom got down on one knee and popped the question. Family and friends surprised them shortly after and tears of happiness were running down their faces. Planning a wedding in the fall of 2020 was tumultuous due to the uncertainty around the pandemic, and what began as an optimistic guest count of 400 pared down to 150 people. As difficult as it was, and as heartbroken as they were, they were determined to make the most of it! The couple picked their priorities and built their wedding celebration around them. At the top of their list was an outdoor ceremony and a pleasant, destination type experience for their family & guests. A minimalist mandap allowed the venue to show off it’s 360 degree view of rolling hills and trees. Rustic and simple details were immersed throughout and the couple created a unique experience that was very reflective of themselves. The bride knew she wanted to wear a saree for the wedding because of her Kannada/Marathi background. With travel to India out of the question, she relied heavily on our relatives in India and Whatsapp video calls with designers and shops. After several early morning / late night calls she selected a dark coral saree, which sometimes showed more red or pink or orange depending on the camera and lighting! A bit stressful to say the least but when the beloved saree arrived it turned out absolutely gorgeous! This inventive bride was adamant about DIYing the signs, pamphlets, and other stationary herself on her iPad. The effort and time were well worth it and she created her own custom wedding stationery suite. For her Garba, her creative brain took over again and perused the aisles of Home Goods finding several statement pieces giving the wedding a tailored, personalized style. Congratulations Sachi & Kunal!

After chatting for months on social media Lisa & Devan met in Austin for the weekend and sparks flew. Countless dates, phone calls, dinners, walks, and coffees continued until the bride’s birthday trip in Arizona. As the sun was setting, Devan proposed on the Horseshoe Bend trail. Giving a nod to tradition, the bride settled on an ivory lengha with red detailing. Traditional kundan jewelry and bangles completed her quintessential bridal look. In the evening, they made a turn for something more modern with a chic black tie reception. The wedding was overflowing with small, thoughtful details infused throughout. The guests enjoyed personalized welcome cards, cocktail napkins, a treasured jenga block guest book, and an adorable squad of little ones created a warm and inviting ambiance into the couple’s celebration.

When the algorithm put together his “filmi” eyes and her beautiful smile it was love at first swipe for these two Dil Mil members. The first love marriage in both their families, it wasn’t until the third time they rescheduled their wedding, that they finally got to take the walk back down the aisle in July of 2021. The bride dreamed of doing her bridal shopping in India and the way the moons aligned she got only 48 hours to get through it! Luckily her best friend and mom had come to India a month before to pre-shop for her arrival. With her mother narrowing down the shops, and the bride deciding on a traditional feel with two different colored dupattas, the hunt was on. (And, would make a great reality show might we add!) As soon as they entered House of Ghunghat the wedding angels began to sing. She tried on an outfit and could tell by glistening eyes and wide smiles all around she had found the one.

This wedding was all about the guest experience. The crafty groom personally built a haldi swing for the bride and also a "Tequila Made Me Do It" wall for the mehendi where a hand came out of the wall to greet you with tequila spritzer. The Haldi Party, was centered around a pool party theme and they ensured guests remained cool in the sun with a snowcone truck on premises. Finally for the Sangeet the bride surprised her groom with one of their favorite singers - Mickey Singh!

A scavenger hunt to all of this couple’s most memorable places lead to a proposal at their favorite local hiking trail, the Giant Stairs at Palisades Park. From there the couple set their sights on a magical wedding in Portugal in 2020, but like many couples, COVID-19 derailed their plans. Led by the trustworthy team of Shaadi Destinations, the couple settled on the Dominican Republic. Turning a dream into a reality wedding in 60 days is no small fete. This decisive couple made decisions and made them fast. The mandap took center stage to capture an airy, casual island vibe. Rattan chandeliers, white gauze and fresh florals came together to set the mood. The bride donned a gorgeous Anita Dongre's bridal lengha with a touch sparkle and detailed embroidery, and was happy to have all the decisions done! Warm beaches, fabulous food and one killer party was the best way to celebrate surrounded by friends and family who had been apart for so long.
