WEF finds India’s trust quotient on the decline Davos, Jan. 22: India is among the most trusted nations globally when it comes to government, business, NGOs and media. But, it recorded extreme trust loss compared to last year, a survey said on Monday. Coming ahead of the World Economic Forum annual summit, the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer said, globally, people’s trust in these four areas remained largely unchanged from last year. Of the 28 countries surveyed, 20 lie in “distruster territory”, one more than in 2017. China topped the Trust Index among both the informed public and the gen-

An inspector of Kalwakuthy police in Nagarkurnool was slippered by the husband of a fellow officer who caught the two together in his house. Inspector Y. Mallikarjuna Reddy, who is also married, was charged with adultery, trespassing and criminal intimidation. The woman officer is additional SP of the ACB. Her husband had been away from for a fortnight, but returned on Sunday at about 11.30 pm, after being tipped off by the watchman. He found everything normal and went off but returned at 2.30 am to find his wife with Inspector Reddy.
YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday said the party was ready to go with the BJP in the 2019 elections if the Centre announced special category status to Andhra Pradesh. He was speaking to a national news channel. Mr Reddy was repeating a statement he had made earlier, but this comes in the run-up to the elections. Besides, Mr Reddy had a surprise meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi some months ago. Loya was a “serious issue”, the Supreme Court on Monday called for the entire records of the case and said it will examine the materials dispassionately and objectively before deciding whether to order a further probe into his mysterious death. Chandrachud orally observed: “If a judge in the district judiciary has died and there are several media reports urging us to look at it and intervene, it becomes serious enough for us to examine the issue dispassionately. “But we can’t press our hands only on the basis of media reports. The Supreme Court on Monday sought the response of the Centre on a writ petition seeking exclusion of “creamy layer” from among the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes from the purview of reservation as they are taking away the benefits due for the poor and downtrodden strata of SC/ST. A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud issue notice on the petition filed by Rajasthan based Samta Andolan Samiti and nine members of this society who belong to the poor and downtrodden strata of the SC/ST. The petitioners said they are approaching this court for protection of their fundamental rights as the creamy layer in the SC/ST Communities are siphoning off of the reservation benefits given to them by the state government as well as the Central government. The 2008 Gujarat bombings mastermind Abdul Subhan Qureshi has been arrested by the Delhi police following an exchange of fire, days ahead of Republic Day, the police said on Monday. Qureshi, co-founder of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and linked to the Students Islamic Movement of India (Simi), was arrested from Ghazipur in East Delhi on Saturday. The Ahmedabad bombings were a series of as many as 21 bomb blasts that had hit the city on July 26, 2008, within a span of 70 minutes. The 20 disqualified AAP MLAs on Monday withdrew their application from the Delhi High Court challenging the EC’s recommendation in the office-of-profit case, saying they would file a fresh plea after examining the notification for their disqualification. Justice Rekha Palli allowed the MLAs to withdraw their plea. Advocate Amit Sharma, appearing for the EC, also said that in view of the government notification after the President’s assent, the applications have become infructuous. After receiving a formal approval from the Union law ministry, the CBI is now preparing to file an appeal in the 2G scam case wherein all the accused were acquitted by the trial court in the High Court. A special CBI court, presided over by judge O.P. Saini, recently acquitted all 16 accused, including former communications minister A. Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi in the 2G scam case. The Union law ministry, sources said, also advised the Central probe agency to file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad high court’s decision in the Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case. The High Court acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the double murder case. Hemraj's wife had also moved the Supreme Court last month.
