KBZ Bank dedicated to philanthropy The word “philanthropy” is not widely known in Myanmar. Some mistake it for charity, but philanthropy is much more profound, as it is defined by the effort to improve the well-being of humankind. Myanmar, rich in natural resources, is still on the list of least-developed country in the world. However, there are some wealthy people in the country who are engaged in philanthropic projects to promote human welfare. Among them is U Aung Ko Win, chair of the Kanbawza Group. KBZ Bank founder U Aung Ko Win and his family established the KBZ Brighter Future Myanmar Foundation, and since 1998 some of the profits earned from U Aung Ko Win’s businesses have been donated to the health, social and education sectors, as well as to environmental greening activities and natural-disaster relief efforts. Between 2010 to 2015, KBZ Bank spent K98 billion in philanthropic activities. U Aung Ko Win has also revealed plans to emphasise the health sector in future philanthropic projects, especially in rural areas throughout the country where people face issues such as low birth rates, cleft lips and palates, and eye diseases. The KBZ Brighter Future Myanmar Foundation provides aid to people regardless of their race or religion. This dedication to philanthropy resulted in KBZ Bank earning a Euromoney Corporate Social Responsibility Award in 2015. As Myanmar becomes more open through 2016 and beyond, we can expect the goodwill and assistance to be spread even farther in the social, health, education and environmental sectors.
