LOCHAL CONSTRUCTION

keeping the original construction of the lochal. removing the old buildings surrounding the hall.

4 BUILDINGS

four buildings are added at the sides of the lochal construction to create an enclosed space inside the lochal.

BUILDING UP

REMOVING CONSTRUCTION

some parts of the original construction are removed to create a greater open space perception.

WOOD VOLUMES

wood volumes ‘grow’ in between the lochal construction. where the volumes intersect with the construction the construction is removed.

Fontys has two faculties in the city campus: Creative studies and Journalism. there is also room for an extra faculty in the building.

LIBRARY

the library is situated next to fontys. The two are connected with with wooden volumes inside the ‘stadshal’. The main direction of the library is also directed to the ‘stadshal’.

OFFICE/INSTITUTE

the third building is an office building. the main orientation of the building is towards the ‘stadshal’

HOTEL

the last building is a congres center. it has an hotel, institute for working practice and an exhibition space.

1. ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION

the monumental construction of the lochal is an eye catcher, even from a great distance. the stadshal is formed by this structure. new function flow in between the old columns and beams, which sometimes even disappear.

2. BUILDINGS

four massive building shield the stadshal from the sides. these buildings continue the building style of the ns-site.

3. WOOD VOLUMES

the wooden volumes inside the stadshal are living structures. they grow between existing structures and where they meet the wood takes over or follows the repetition.

4. LOUVERS

louvers cloak the wooden volumes, shielding them from sunlight and directing a view. the louvers follow the same rule as the volumes winding through the stadshal. but when they meet the monumental construction they retreat.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE INTERIOR M A I K E L S C H O LT E N

the stadshal is an outdoor public space. it is formed by the old lohal structure and the (new) buildings. the hall opens up towards the city (south) and the neighbourhood (north).

the stadshal is mainly divides into two parts, north and south. the southern part has a more open feeling. it has two large squares where different activities can take place, the northern part has a more dens feeling. in this part courtyards play an important role. there are three courtyards. the first is the open air podium which is situated next to the fontys school. the second sourtyard is for the passerby. it is the begining or the end of a passage way through the stadshal. the last courtyard is one where you can drink your coffee you just bought from the coffee bar. it is a place where you can rest and read a book. the courtyards are formed by wooden volumes that house function related to the fontys school and the library. from inside these volumes you can experience the stadshal beneath by looking through the wooden louver facade or at special point in the facade where the louvers are removed. the wooden volumes and the courtyards give a distorted view of what is inside or outside. this is because of changes in material, height and use of light.

1. BRICK

the brickwork of the buildings next to the stadshal are the same style as the original buildings of the ns workshop. it is a dark red to brown stone.

2. CONSTRUCTION

the main construction is seen from outside and inside. it has to withstand the harsh dutch climate. chestnut wood is a durable kind of wood that can manage the outside climate without any additional protection.

3. CONCRETE

some of the original concrete flooring will remain visible in the stadshal. plants and greenery will grow through and over this concrete. this is to emphasize the contrast between urban and nature.

4. FACADE LOUVERS

birch wooden planks (42x150mm) are mounted on the facade. the wood will be untreated and will act as rain drainage along the facade. due to water and wind the wood will bend in all kinds of natural shapes. the brackets that hold the louvers allow this.

6. FLOOR

the floor beams are made out of chestnut wood, just like the construction. the floors are insulated with durable flax insulation. on top of the insulation there is floor heating inside a thin layer of concrete. the floor is finished with oak wooden boards (24mm)

CONSTRUCTING

8. WINDOWS

(contemporary house, buenos aires) the window frames are made out of black (anodized) aluminum. the color will create a contrast between the window frames and the interior of the library.

CLIMATE

the wooden volumes profit from the climate system of the adjacent buildings. there is extra ventilation possible through the bookcases and a central air duct and through air grids in the windows. floor heating warms the library section. other sections don’t need a climate system.

CONSTRUCTION

the construction is a simple wooden column-beam construction. it is made out of chestnut wood for durability and strength. the main grid size is 4950 x 3150mm. with this size the volumes fit perfectly between the original lochal construction and profits from that stability.
