Garden friend: The Harbour Harvest festival held at Orton Bradley Park last Wednesday drew 500 children from the schools and preschools in the harbour basin. They spent the day trying out an array of sustainability-related tasks in a series of workshops, including making a scarecrow, which they particularly enjoyed. Jam making and apple-juice pressing were also popular activities. Photo: Gilbert Wealleans. More photos on page 8.

Residents applaud grant for community centre

Christine de Felice CRIES of approval and applause greeted residents association president Jocelyn Papprill’s announcement of a $500,000 grant for the rebuild of the Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre last Wednesday night. Mrs Papprill announced the grant during her president’s report at the Mt Pleasant Residents Association’s AGM. She said it would be added to the $1.4 million insurance pay out the association had received for its former community centre, which was demolished in May 2012 after sustaining severe damage in the February 22 and subsequent earthquakes. The association had also applied for a Lotteries Commission grant, and was hopeful that further funding would come from that, Mrs Papprill said. Both funding applications were submitted together with the draft concept plan for the new facility.

In her report Mrs Papprill said once they had a figure on top of the insurance pay-out they would know what they had to work with and would be able to bring something to the community for feedback and further consultation. “We will cut our cloth according to what we get,” she told the meeting. “The concept plan will be developed according to funds available. We don’t want to build up too much hope.” Concept plans for a new expanded building included a dedicated dance/yoga/martial arts studio, a working pottery space, multiple use meeting rooms and a community lounge together with quality kitchen facilities and permanent support for the farmers market. “We are very excited about this funding as it is the next rung of the ladder towards beginning our rebuild project,” Mrs Papprill said. From late 2014 the association hopes again

to be able to host a huge range of community activities including pottery, karate, art, playgroups and holiday programmes, yoga, dancing and needlework in a new centre, as well as provide a permanent home for the farmers market and the Residents Association. “This new building will be much more than a community centre. It will be the village base that we have never had,” community coordinator Linda Rutland said. In her report to the meeting, Mrs Papprill said through the consultation they got a “tremendous number of fantastic ideas for other projects people would like to see develop around the hill over time”. Examples of such projects included an improved playground area on the McCormacks Bay site that incorporated outside gym equipment, a hill walkway map, a half court for two-on-two basketball and a BMX track.

Pumpkins flourish in Heathcote Valley

Causeway to close for six months THE Main Road causeway to Redcliffs and Sumner will be closed to all traffic for six months while it is repaired by SCIRT delivery team Fulton Hogan. During that time all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, will need to take a detour along McCormacks Bay Road. It will add half a kilometre to the causeway route length but is not expected to create additional delays. Work begins in the second week of the school holidays, Monday, April 29, so people can get used to the detour while traffic is lighter. Two main factors led to the decision by SCIRT and Christchurch City Council traffic engineers to temporarily close the road, SCIRT general manager Duncan Gibb said. These were safety and cost-effectiveness. “Safety for road users as well as the SCIRT crews over the winter, when visibility is often poor, was the most important factor. And by taking all the traffic off the causeway, the project will be completed in a shorter timeframe – at least two months if not more – in time for summer. In turn, the shorter time frame reduces the cost of the project,” Mr Gibb said. The detour route around McCormacks Bay Rd is being repaired in some places before the causeway work starts. Work on the Maffeys Road retaining wall by SCIRT delivery team City Care, is almost complete, which means

McCormacks Bay Rd can be fully reopened. Fulton Hogan will monitor and maintain the detour route once the project starts. “We hope that people will drive to the conditions on the new detour route. If people can be courteous it will help ease the transition for McCormacks Bay residents and business owners,” Mr Gibb said. He said Fulton Hogan and their traffic management team would be monitoring the situation on McCormacks Bay Rd once the causeway was closed to traffic, and had been in discussions with people from the farmers market and others to ensure safety for all parties. “Accommodating cyclists and creating a safe passage for pedestrians may mean that some parts of McCormacks Bay Rd lose a bit of parking,’ Mr Gibb said. SCIRT has advised the organisers of the Saturday morning farmers market to speak to the council regarding extra parking areas on the council reserve. Fulton Hogan may also look into an option of making temporary car park spaces available on Main Road in the (over the weekend inactive) worksite. However, this would have to be managed by a parking warden/traffic manager, which the farmers market would have to supply, Mr Gibb said..

LINWOOD Mini Library has closed while preparations continue for the opening of a new temporary library and service centre at Eastgate Shopping Centre. The mini library at 180 Smith Street closed on Saturday, March 30, at 4pm. However, the temporary service centre on the same site will remain open for longer, closing at 5pm on Friday, April 26. Mayor Bob Parker will open the new temporary Linwood Library and Service Centre at Eastgate, on the first floor of the shopping centre, on Tuesday, April 30. The mini library opened in April 2011 following the closure of the Linwood Library in Cranley Street after the February 2011 earthquake. Unit manager Libraries and Information Carolyn Robertson said the council recognised Shock Absorber Orthotic residents will miss the library service in the time between the Linwood Mini Library closing and the new Eastgate facility opening. some time for staff to set up the new library. “The shelving, furniture and computer equipment from Linwood Mini Library will be used in the new facility. Staff will also need time to set up the 50,000-item collection that was previously at the Linwood Library in Cranley Street “Linwood Mini Library has been a lifeline for many of our customers since it opened last year. Although the small space has been challenging, staff have really enjoyed the increased interaction with customers and are looking forward to building on these relationships at our new library. “We appreciate customers’ understanding while we make the transition to the much larger facility at Eastgate,” Mrs Robertson said. The new library at Eastgate will be open Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Until it opens, the closest alternative libraries are South Library, 66 Colombo Street, and Central Library Tuam, 121 Tuam Street.

Community band seeks Supermarket to be rebranded new conductor Christine de Felice

THE Woolston supermarket, which is currently trading as Woolston Supervalue, is about to change to a New World outlet. This follows the expiry of the current lease and the purchase of the site by Foodstuffs South Island. The new store will be owned and operated by Greg and Rebecca Boock. The supermarket will be closed for three days, from May 1 to May 3, while refitting for the New World brand is undertaken. The rebranded store will open for business on May 4. While it will initially be a smaller-sized New World, plans are underway to build a new store adjacent to the existing supermarket. This may be in two to two and a half years’ time, depending on how well the store goes with the New World brand, Mr Boock said. The Boock family has been involved in the grocery trade for many years. “Grand-dad opened Gardens New World in Dunedin and mum and dad (Maria and Bruce Boock) moved to Christchurch to take over Bishopdale New World before moving to Blenheim New World,” he said. “I’ve worked in supermarkets since I was at school, slowly moving through the ranks from trolley boy to, most recently, store manager at Northlands Pak’nSave. So you could say being a grocer is in my blood. “The [Woolston] opportunity came to us so we decided to go where the store is. I’ve grown up in the grocery trade and it’s a very proud moment to get to this stage. And it will

be nice to have the New World brand back in the area.” Mr Boock was looking forward to getting to know the staff at the Woolston store, working with them and making sure they were happy. He confirmed that the 28 staff currently employed at the store would remain. There may be potential for more roles to be created in the future but this would be determined once plans were complete. He said his new role was also about “getting to know the community”. “We want the community to come in and see us so we can meet them. My wife is involved in the business too – she’s a part-time mum and a part-time supermarket owner. It will be a family store. That’s what’s worked in the past.” Meanwhile, Redcliffs residents may be wondering when their New World supermarket will be operating again. Foodstuffs South Island general manager property and development Roger Davidson said the company could confirm that a meeting was scheduled with the council in late April to discuss infrastructure matters such as traffic lights and safety around the Redcliffs village. “Unfortunately, until that meeting occurs we are unable to provide any further detail. We remain committed to the Redcliffs community and we are very keen to get resolution on these matters so we can move forward with the rebuild as soon as possible,” Mr Davidson said.

Ferrymead Bridge project on track THE Ferrymead Bridge replacement project is on schedule with the demolition of the existing bridge expected to be complete before the end of this month. With the ‘nibbler’ cranes completing the final demolition of the existing bridge, the next part of the work is the pile removal. This is a delicate operation, as the removal process takes place under water. It is expected to be completed by the end of April. Once the older piles are removed, preparation work can start to allow for heavy machinery to move into place and begin the piling for the base of the new Ferrymead Bridge. This is called the staging process whereby land ‘fingers’ are

Home the way we see it

constructed in the water, for the heavy machinery to work from during the piling construction. The work on demolishing the existing bridge began in February 2013, and the temporary bridges were installed in late January 2013. Completion of the new bridge is likely to be by mid-2015, but time frames may have to be adapted if unexpected ground conditions for piling are encountered. The piling process for the new bridge will take about 15 months and start as soon as the existing bridge is demolished. More information on the Ferrymead Bridge project can be found on the Christchurch City Council website, http://www.ccc.govt.nz/ ferrymead.

Change of day for free dog microchipping service THE Christchurch City Council’s free dog microchipping service, which was previously offered each Friday, is now being offered from 11am to noon each Wednesday. Inspections and Enforcement Unit manager Gary Lennan said the process was quick and easy, and recommended for dogs of all ages. “Even if your dog has been registered for quite a while, we still encourage owners to bring them down and get them chipped if they aren’t already. Each chip is only about the size of a grain of rice, and the process of inserting it into the scruff of your dog’s neck is as painless as an injection and only takes a couple of seconds. “Once your dog is chipped, Animal Control officers can distinguish it from any other dog in New Zealand,” Mr Lennan said. “Upon finding a lost dog with a unique microchip identification number, the council can scan it, check its details on the National Dog Database and hopefully reunite it with its owner as soon as possible. “The Dog Control Act 1996 now also requires

1 32

all dogs to be microchipped within two months of their initial registration – which we think is good news for the city. There is a fine if owners fail to do so. “We hope owners take us up on this opportunity for free micro-chipping every Wednesday, because it’s a great way to avoid the heartache of a lost pet at a later date.” The service is offered at Christchurch City Animal Shelter at 10 Metro Place, Bromley, and is for all dogs registered and resident in Christchurch. No out-of-district dogs will be microchipped by the council. “We strongly discourage owners from bringing any unvaccinated dog to the Animal Shelter for microchipping,” Mr Lennan says. “It is very risky to bring dogs to the shelter that have not been vaccinated against parvovirus.” Veterinarians can also microchip dogs at the owners’ expense. Anyone with questions about the microchipping process is encouraged to contact the Animal Control Team on 941 8999.

Flying high: Matt Stanford paragliding over Lyttelton Harbour.

Still Pedalling!

Photo: Supplied

Christine de Felice

ON March 2, 2013, Sumner resident Matt Stanford achieved a world first – he crossed Cook Strait by paraglider. Apart from aircraft and gliders, no other form of airborne propulsion had previously been used to make the crossing, he said, and as a paraglider he wanted to accomplish the feat. “I wanted to be the first paraglider to cross the strait, it was a dream I had.” English-born Stanford started paragliding in 2009. He quit his school teaching job in the UK to go to Nepal, where he spent about six months teaching two days a week at a leprosy hospital in Pokhara, Nepal’s second-biggest town. The rest of the time he spent paragliding. “The foothills of the Himalayas are a good environment for paragliding. During the six or seven months I was there I got about 120 hours’ flying time.” Stanford, who arrived in Christchurch in August 2010, said he had always wanted to come to New Zealand. For a keen paraglider, Sumner was an ideal place to settle; however, the earthquake on September 4, 2010 resulted in the loss of local take-off points for paragliders, he said. “The cliffs launch site at Scarborough and the

access to Castle Rock – we lost those. It’s taken a lot of negotiation to get them back, but we’ve had some success in getting them back.” In 2012, while on holiday in Nelson, he and a group of paragliding friends came up with the idea of trying the Cook Strait crossing, which fired Stanford’s imagination. “I just couldn’t drop it. It was one to tick off the list.” A previous, unsuccessful attempt had been made, and as he admits, it was no easy feat for him, either. “It took 14 months planning and there were several false starts. The weather had to be right. I had to get air space permission to have the air space shut. I could only do the flight on a Saturday or Sunday. I had to get CAA permission to jump out of the helicopter, and I had to find a pilot who was willing to take me. I had to find a place to land on the Wellington side. I decided on the West Wind farm at Cable Bay.” Stanford completed the flight on his third attempt. It involved jumping out of the helicopter at 4000 metres, free falling for 80 to 100 metres before the parachute opened, then paragliding across 30 kilometres of open water.

“I was worried about three things. One, if something went wrong with the helicopter, two that the chute might not open properly and three I wondered if I was going to make it all the way across.” If the parachute didn’t open properly, Stanford said, he would have landed in the water and would probably have been pulled under as the chute filled with water. About two-thirds of the way across he hit a head wind and as a result, nearly landed in the sea instead of onshore. However, he reached his destination safely, where his girlfriend/ground crew Donna Meikle was waiting. His dream was realised. Stanford is using his Cook Strait flight as a fundraiser for World Vision. Now teaching at Hillview Christian School in St Martins, he said he was inspired by the students, who raised $25,000 for World Vision in last year’s 40-Hour Famine. “That was the second-largest amount raised in New Zealand. It was amazing for such a small school.” Anyone who wants to support Stanford’s fundraising initiative can go to the website www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/cookstrait.

Champion band to perform Akaroa marine reserve approved on Anzac Day at Wigram CONSERVATION Minister Nick Smith was in Akaroa on Sunday to announce the approval of a new marine reserve in Akaroa Harbour. “Akaroa is an iconic harbour that is hugely popular for recreation and tourism but its marine life is degraded. I have approved this new reserve around the spectacular Dan Rogers Bluff because it will enhance the area, assist scientific study and benefit the public,” Dr Smith said. The Akaroa Harbour Marine Protection Society Inc. made a formal application for the marine reserve in January 1996. The formal consultation had 2334 submissions in support and 709 objections, with the principal opponents being Ngāi Tahu and recreational fishers. “I have carefully considered the passionate and strongly felt arguments put by both supporters and opponents of this reserve. I have not upheld the objections but have decided to adjust the northern boundary by 55 hectares, reducing the reserve to 475ha, to take account of concerns from customary and recreational fishers. “It is my usual preference to secure some degree of consensus about the desirability of having new areas of marine protection, as was the case with my announcement last month of

five new marine reserves on the West Coast of the South Island. This has not been possible with the Akaroa proposal despite the best endeavours of six ministers over nearly two decades. I concluded, with the support of both the applicant and principal objectors last month, that consensus in this case was not possible and that I needed to proceed to make a decision.”

New town plan needed, residents say

THE Woolston Brass Band will again be performing its annual Anzac Day concert on April 25 at the Air Force Museum, Wigram. The reigning New Zealand champion brass band, it will present a programme with a naval theme this year, but also incorporating traditional Anzac Day tunes. The concert starts at 2pm, and prior to that, an Anzac service will be held

in the museum’s foyer, from 12pm to 1pm, which people attending the concert are also invited to. Concert tickets are $20 for adults, with children admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the Air Force Museum or through Dash. People wanting to attend are encouraged to purchase their tickets for the popular concert as soon as possible.

LYTTELTON residents want their Town Centre Plan to be updated, local resident Kris Herbert says. Ms Herbert said the plan was out of date, which was making it hard for new buildings to be built in Lyttelton’s commercial zone. “The plan’s design guidelines were meant to make sure new buildings fit in with the existing heritage buildings. Of course, most of these buildings are gone and residents are banding together to demand the council move the rebuild forward by updating the Town Centre Plan immediately,” Ms Herbert said. “Extensive consultation following the February earthquake showed there would be a need to update the Town Centre Plan and this has been acknowledged in the Lyttelton Master Plan. But recent articles in The Press have reported that the council doesn’t intend to even start this lengthy process for another couple of years,” she said. “Residents are standing up to demand that the council fast-track this process so that building owners can move forward with a

clear mandate from the community.” An online petition seeking the update has been launched and paper petitions circulated around Lyttelton. “We are so fortunate in Lyttelton that its major sites are owned by people who care deeply about this town – people who have a history with this place and who intend to live and work in the spaces they develop – people with insurance money behind them and people with plenty of creative energy to pour into their projects,” Ms Herbert said. “Lyttelton is unique in its ability to rebuild in this meaningful way. But these building owners cannot wait forever. “Only when the town centre begins to be rebuilt will Lyttelton finally have a real sense of recovery. And it’s clear that Lyttelton’s building owners have no appetite for rebuilding under the current plan.” Ms Herbert is presenting a deputation to the full council at the earthquake forum tomorrow. She will also present the petition, which was expected to have about 500 signatures.

Harbour Harvest Festival Charteris Bay rang to the sounds of excitement and laughter as 500 children converged on Orton Bradley Park last Wednesday. The pupils, who were from the Lyttelton Harbour Basin schools and preschools, were taking part in the Harbour Harvest Festival. Their activities included flax weaving, jam and

salsa making classes, as well as foraging for edible nuts and seeds and solar oven making. Scarecrows and pine cone bird feeders were also constructed during the busy day. Mainland Press social editor Gilbert Wealleans played truant from the newsroom to join in the fun of the festival…

Rafting skills tested at Cass Bay

DRYCLEANERS & LAUNDERERS

Mt Pleasant School

AS the southerly headed north, and the skies cleared, Cass Bay turned on a perfect day for year 5 and 6 students from Mt Pleasant School to test out their homemade rafts against each other. While not technically racing, they were voted on for stability, style, manoeuvrability, and teamwork by their peers and parents, who lined the beach waiting to see who tipped and who didn’t! This was a culmination of a co-operation unit exercise that had been scheduled for the Heathcote River a few weeks ago until the water quality prompted a relocation.

Students shine in touch rugby competition WE had to dig deep and the odds were stacked against us but that made the success all the sweeter when we won the Bays Cluster touch competition. When our year 8s headed to high school at the end of last year, the pressure came on the team to muster enough players to continue with the season in term one of this year. We put the call out to the younger teams and with courage (and skill beyond their years) we made up the shortfall with students from as young as year 4/5. The height differential of the team that took the field each week was a talking point, but they played with huge hearts and we were thrilled to win the competition.

Fortunately, our students are used to playing with a range of age groups, with the seniors bringing younger students into games and helping them play with confidence. Being a mixed competition provided a great opportunity for the girls and boys to play a sport together and they made the most of this in combining well as a team. Similarly, our year 5/6 team went from strength to strength each week and managed to win some tough games to take out the year 5/6 competition. And then a fit few had to step up for the year 7/8 team but they happily took the field and all teams were cheered on by a proud bunch of parents! Our success in the competition made for a great school assembly

with so many students receiving certificates and prizes. The year 3/4 team won most of their games each week, too, and had tremendous fun being a part of the competition – they have inspired our year 1 and 2 students to join in next season.

the spaces of Maori and Pakeha conventions. It is the ‘space between’ tapu and noa, male and female, life and death, past and future. It is a space that is active and responsive. The marks are produced by the paint, which is often from the kokowai stone gathered from Parapara Maunga (mountain). The stone is ground and mixed with binder. The gold leaf started with the journey of telling the history of gold-mining in our area, but it soon became a reflective light that allows the paintings to change with the different lights from differing times of the day to reflecting on them. The materials used are part of the story of the works. They are not ‘landscapes’ but are the whenua, the whenua and its inter-connectedness with the events of people, manu (birds), moana (sea) and plants.

Peninsula Art Auction

Where people once shopped, art works were displayed and auctioned last Sunday evening. The Peninsula Art Auction, held in the former Lyttelton supermarket building, attracted a large crowd of art lovers, which made for lively bidding. The auction featured artists associated with Bank’s Peninsula and was sponsored by local businesses. Proceeds were to be donated to Lyttelton schools. Children and grandparents rocking on SINGER/songwriter Kath Bee will be performing her ‘Grandparents Rock’ concert at Lyttelton Main School next Wednesday. Known throughout New Zealand for her lively children’s songs, Bee is coming to Lyttelton as part of her current South Island tour. Children are invited to bring their grandparents and great-grandparents to the Grandparents Rock concert to sing and dance to the catchy, original music. Bee sings and plays guitar, and is accompanied by Melody White on bass/bvs and Rhys Clarke on drums. She has written a special song for grandparents and will be giving away CDs and balloon flowers, courtesy of Flossie the Balloon Lady, who will also be making bee bracelets and selling them for a gold coin before and after the concert.

Works depict Christchurch as it is now Christine de Felice

AN exhibition of oil paintings by artist Julia Holden, entitled ‘Wish You Were Here’, opened last Friday evening in Redcliffs. The works depict Christchurch as it is at present – suburban houses boarded up and waiting to be demolished, damaged central city buildings, cleared building sites, and are appropriately exhibited in a building that is itself awaiting renovation. Originally from north of Auckland, Holden has lived on Waiheke Island and in more recent years in Melbourne where she gained a Master of Fine Arts from Monash University. She arrived in Christchurch last October. “It was very shocking to see what’s happened here,” she said. “The city is nearing the bottom of the demolition cycle before renewal begins. It’s reached an interesting point. Even in nothing there is something – it tells the story [of what happened in the earthquakes]. “I wanted to give something or contribute in some way. I’m just an artist and I thought, what can an artist do to help? I can make visible the invisible. That’s what an artist’s job is. “How do you convey what’s happened here when there are whole parts of the city and surrounds that have been changed utterly? I didn’t experience it [the earthquake] but I can see the aftermath and feel its ongoing effect on people who lived through it.” The subject matter of the exhibition is not

“looking back”, she said. “It’s current, a portrait of absence. I didn’t know the city previously so I don’t have a viewpoint as to how it was. “I had the concept for the exhibition in the first couple of weeks. As an outsider I was thinking about people, those who were lost, the buildings that have gone and whole communities that are no longer there or have left for other places. I was also missing my friends I’d left behind in Melbourne and Auckland and wanted to send them something that could give an idea of how the place is now, which is where the idea of series of postcards and the title of the exhibition, ‘Wish You Were Here’, came from. Six of the works have been reproduced as postcards, which are being sold as sets.” Holden has set up the exhibition in three rooms in the premises formerly occupied by Mel and Zoe’s in the Redcliffs Village. She would like it to become an exhibition space or community gallery at Redcliffs, as Christchurch has lost so many of its exhibition spaces . “I’ve met quite a few people in the local community and I can see that they are coping well under the circumstances, but are nonetheless stressed and distressed. The gallery would be a reason for people to stop, take some time out and enjoy looking at some art.” ‘Wish you were here’ is open every day from 11 am to 6 pm until Sunday April 21, or by appointment. Contact Julia Holden on 024 788 725.

They also offer scrumptious cakes sold by the slice ultra lemon layer cake, German chocolate cake and hummingbird cake. Vincie started baking at a young age, her grandmother Gretchen Hobbs from Reefton was her inspiration. She was renowned for her baking throughout the district. Vincie started Gretchen’s Kitchen after the earthquakes as she baked in the night when unable to sleep. Her colleagues suggested she take the scones to markets to sell. “Baking for others is a pure joy and it’s where I feel happiest,” Vincie says. She is now branching out with catering finger food and platters for functions, making cakes to order and of course scones for morning teas or in gift baskets as a thank you or presents.

‘I’ve got spare – have a share’ Jocelyn Papprill

SHARING what we have is a great way of building neighbourliness and community. Over the past few years, even before the quakes jolted us all out of our usual way of being, our Mt Pleasant Residents’ Association has been encouraging an element of sharing. One of the activities we championed was the fortnightly produce swap meet, which was held in the sunny courtyard of the now demolished community centre. Back then (about mid-2009) we would regularly have 15 to 20 people turn up to share their spare produce over a cuppa and a yarn. Some would bring vegetables fresh from the garden, while others brought along preserves made with love in their kitchens. Often, there would be a cake warm from the oven to have with the tea or coffee. The group was a lively and diverse one reflecting a crosssection of Mt Pleasant residents. The produce swap meets have continued right through the quakes, stopping only for the winter season when gardens are fallow or producing only small quantities. Once the temporary centre was in place we again had a regular place to meet as the garden in front of the old Major Hornbrook Rd shops was often cold and windy, even for the hardy ones! In recent months the number attending have dropped somewhat to a regular crew of about six to eight attendees to the Sunday afternoon meets. As we near the end of this season the ‘swappies’ are planning to visit each other’s gardens to share gardening tips as well as produce. Should you be interested in joining the swap meet network feel free to contact Jocelyn (jocelyn@mpcc.org.nz) or check out

the information on our website http://www. mpcc.org.nz/your-interests/swap-meets/. Another sharing element encouraged by the association has been the annual Pleasant Day Out, which we established in September 2009. Our recent event was well profiled in a previous Bay Harbour News and we look forward to the 2014 festival. Since the quakes we have appreciated Mt Pleasant School sharing their wonderful grounds and facilities so this event could become bigger and better. It is a great venue for those who wish to camp and recreate the immediate post-quake experience. We certainly appreciate the in-kind support given by various groups and the energy the organising committee puts into the event. We welcome new people to the committee for next year’s event; if you’re keen to help out contact Linda Rutland coordinator@mpcc.org.nz.

BEING part of a volunteer fire brigade is probably different from what you think. To be a volunteer you must be 16 years of age or over. If you’re not yet 18 years old you will need the consent of your parent or guardian. Apart from this requirement, almost anybody can join a brigade, male or female, young and old, those looking for adventure or those just wanting to contribute to their community. There are opportunities for people from all backgrounds within a volunteer fire brigade. For the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade (as for many of the other volunteer brigades around Canterbury) it is often difficult to muster a full crew during the working day.

We would be interested in speaking to anyone who is available during normal working hours, who wishes to give something back to the community and who is keen to learn some valuable skills and join with a great group of people. If interested, come to the station in Wiggins Street, Sumner on Wednesdays at 7.20pm. Recent calls for the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade: February 16 – rubbish fire; February 16 – bonfires on beach; March 9 – investigate smoke; March 17 – power lines arcing; March 22 – vehicle off road; March 30 – boat fire; April 7 – compost bin fire; April 10 – scrub fire; April 11 – scrub fire.

Sumner causeway work starts, McCormacks Bay Road detour The Main Road causeway to Redcliffs and Sumner will be repaired by SCIRT delivery team Fulton Hogan over the next six months. The causeway will be closed to all traffic. Work begins the second week of the school holidays, starting Monday 29 April, so people can get used to the McCormacks Bay Road detour. Two main factors led to the decision to temporarily close the road: •

safety for road users as well as the SCIRT crews

a shorter, more cost effective timeframe, finished before summer.

The seawall bordering the Avon-Heathcote Estuary/ Ihutai will be rebuilt and extended. A new bridge will be built over an existing culvert (channel under the road) as well as two new culverts.

• All road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, need to take the detour. • Waterway recreationalists need to stay away from the culverts and take care along the seawall. • Due to the increased traffic, McCormacks Bay residents will need to take extra care leaving their driveways and crossing the road. • All road users are asked to be considerate and drive to the changed conditions. • The detour adds half a kilometre to the journey.

Outstanding year for cricket club

Aaron's Surf Report

Mark Pearson

THE Diamond Harbour/Kaituna cricket club had another outstanding year in the Banks Peninsula/Ellesmere/ Malvern competition. Although we didn’t win the finals we at least made them, which was important to this very young team. Having lost a few players from last season it was always going to be a struggle to win the big games but the lads rallied together and managed to wrestle the Steve Ryan Memorial Cup off Weedons, only to lose it to Lincoln two weeks later. The club had plenty to celebrate over the season with Henry Nicholls getting a contract with the Canterbury Wizards and cementing his spot in the team. He still managed to play five games for the club this season, which has been great for his team-mates. William Williams made the NZ U19 team and went to Australia for the U19 World Cup and also made his debut for the Canterbury Wizards against Otago. He etched his name in the record books as only the fourth person in the domestic competition to be given out for handled ball, and he is likely the first to be given out for handled ball on debut. Will also broke a Diamond Harbour record by smashing 179 in a 45-over game. There were other great performances during the season. Sam Zwarts snared five wickets for 10 runs against Dunsandel and Cameron Letham took six wickets for 30 against Southbridge/

Leeston. In December 2012, Diamond Harbour entered another phase of its development when it received its new coloured playing gear, kindly funded by the Southern Trust. We would also like to thank Pub Charity for funding our new two-piece and four-piece cricket balls. This season was the first time in the club’s history that we managed to organise a junior section three team and it proved to be very successful. It was managed and selected by Rowena Cameron and she, along with the rest of the parents, did a fantastic job. Thanks also go to Peter Jones and Eddy Norgate who took the juniors for training sessions. Peter also manages

pitch preparation and administration, for which the members thank him. The winners of the senior and junior trophies are as follows: Seniors Batting: William Williams; Bowling: Rob Austin; Most Improved: Mike Simcock; Outstanding Performance: William Williams. Juniors Batting: Caleb Blake; Bowling: Liam Cuthbert; Best Sportsman: Lachlan Smith; Most Improved: Charmaine Cameron. All the juniors deserve recognition, because all have improved significantly over the season. They are Lizzie Blake, Lucy Currie, William Currie, Jake Blake, Mathew Forbes, Alexander Cameron, Archie Kirkwood, Morgan Carter and Jonathan Henderson.

Young basketballer to represent New Zealand Samantha Early

FERRYMEAD resident Kendal Hastie is bouncing with excitement after being chosen for the New Zealand Under-18 women’s basketball team. Hastie, 17, is one of only five New Zealand-based players to make the team, and her selection follows winning silver at the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Oceania 2012 Pacific Youth Basketball Championships held in November last year in La Trobe city, near Melbourne. The Cashmere High School year 13 student has travelled to Brisbane for the Australian State championships, spending a week in training camp before the tournament starts on Saturday. Her mother, Paula Hastie, said Kendal had been playing basketball since she was five, after she went along with her family, including twin sister Caetlyn, to watch their older brother

Kyle play. “She got into it and hasn’t looked back since, she just loves the sport,” Mrs Hastie said. Kendal, who plays shooting guard, said she was “stoked” to make the under-18 side. “I was pretty surprised.”

She has been playing representatively for Canterbury since she was nine and has always wanted to play for New Zealand. “I have kind of already done that for my age group and [I want to] keep going for New Zealand.” She has been training with the Wild Cats Canterbury women’s extended squad since late last year and is in her second year playing for University of Canterbury teams. Later this year she will trial for the Junior Tall Ferns. “I train about six days a week with different teams and just fitness training.” At the FIBA tournament Kendal’s team competed against eight countries, making the finals against Australia. She’s looking forward to facing the Aussies again and plans to keep going in the sport as far as she can.

Changing season coincides with good surf conditions THE change of season has come as a bit of a shock, but at least it has coincided with a good run of surf. The weather and waves over Easter weekend were incredible with hot balmy days and a nice three to four-foot north-east swell – it felt like midJanuary. The following weekend was a different story with cold, grey south-easterlies and the days barely reaching 15 degrees Celsius, but a nice clean two to three feet of east swell made for great surfing. The water temperature has dropped slightly but is still a reasonable 16 degrees. It should remain warm until the end of the month and then drop through May. It’s been busy on the contest scene lately with the Canterbury men’s and women’s champs running at Gore Bay and New Brighton in recent weeks and the South Island champs held in Dunedin over Easter. The Canterbury women’s champs were held at New Brighton Pier on a warm day with messy two to three-foot surf. Local surfers performed well with Alethea Lock winning open and juniors and Kristi Zarifeh coming second in the open and fourth in the juniors. The Canterbury men’s event was held in Gore Bay the week after Easter in two-foot clean surf; the event had been planned for March but was postponed due to lack of surf. Levi O’Connor, of Kaikoura, won the open. Local surfers were well represented

with Harrison Whiteside first in the cadets and Max Marshall fourth. Ben Lubbers from Exit Surf won the masters with Neill Robb third. Neill won the grand masters event. The South Island surf champs were held over Easter at St Clair beach in Dunedin. This year the contest was part of the New Zealand Surfing Tour so it attracted a high-quality field of surfers from throughout the country. The waves were pretty good over the entire weekend with nice, clean, sunny, two to three-foot waves. JC Susan, of Dunedin, won the open. Max Marshall (Sumner) won the cadets with Harrison Whiteside (Redcliffs) second. Neill Robb (Sumner) won the grand masters once again. Luke O’Neill (Sumner) was third in the longboard and Hugh Ritchie of Exit Surf was second in both longboard and the single fin event. Harrison has been selected for a second year in a row to represent New Zealand at the world junior surfing champs. He will travel with a team of 12 others to Nicaragua in June for the event. Harrison’s performances on the New Zealand circuit this summer have impressed the selectors. Nicaragua in Central America is a bit of an unknown surf destination but has some incredible waves and winds that blow offshore over 300 days of the year due to a huge inland lake plus lukewarm water. Good luck, Harry.
