Iconic race finish stays at pier BY KYLE KNOWLES

New Brighton will again be home to the finish line of the Coast to Coast in 2016 and beyond. This year was the first time the famous race finished in New Brighton after previously ending in Sumner. The finish line will be set up outside the New Brighton Library by the pier on the weekend of February 12, 2016. Organisers have also locked in New Brighton past 2016 but could not confirm for how many years. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen said it was “wicked.”

Mr Zaanen was a big part of this year’s event, he was the transition manager at the finish line. He said it was a big part of the summer events calendar for the suburb and to have it confirmed the Coast to Coast was returning was a massive boost. “The events calendar we’re working on at the moment is fantastic. New Brighton is the place to be and is the new events centre outside of the city centre. There is a lot of energy and effort in doing both and that’s bloody exciting.” There are already plans to improve the finish line experience but details on those improvements were not available. Entries are already open for next year’s Coast to Coast with prizes up for grabs for people who enter before July 31 including a $5000 sponsorship package. Suspects identified BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Police say they have identified three suspected shoplifters a Dallington liquor store manager locked in his premises. Detective Wayne Boyd told the Pegasus Post that they were closing in on a 17 and 18-year-old, and a man in his 40s. They have been identified from security camera footage from the Woodham Rd Liquor Store. On Wednesday three men allegedly stole a bottle of vodka from Mr Singh’s premises, before being locked in, and then breaking out of the store. Mr Singh said: “I thought if I locked the doors, they would be frightened and give me back the bottle.” But the men disappeared with the vodka after one of the men was alleged to have threatened Mr Singh with a knife. On Thursday Detective Boyd said police expected to find two of the suspects “in the coming days.” “The shop had really good CCTV footage, which enabled us to identify them (the suspects). I wish every dairy and liquor store had CCTV as good as that.”

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board has been recommended to grant the Portsmouth St Kidsfirst Kindergarten $2960 to go towards their food Friday programme. The kindergarten initially requested $5480 for the programme from the board’s discretionary response fund. $15,000 has also been recommended to be granted to the New Brighton Project group for wages.

This year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal has raised more than $250,000 for Canterbury’s rescue helicopter. This is part of $1.5m raised across the country. All donations from the Westpac Chopper Appeal are distributed back to the 16 rescue helicopter services across the country, meaning money raised locally, stays local. Westpac’s director of corporate affairs, Sue Foley, said the total raised is an outstanding effort. “New Zealanders have once again shown their support rallying behind their local rescue helicopters,” said Ms Foley.

“We’d like to thank all of those who generously dug deep and donated, along with everyone who was involved in the fundraising events in their communities. “The helicopters provide such a vital service that saves lives on a daily basis. It’s important for us to continue to play our part and raise awareness as well as much-needed funds to keep them in the air.” Westpac employees were also crucial to the success of this year’s result with fundraising initiatives organised around the country as well as hitting the streets to collect $128,000 on the nationwide Chopper Street Appeal day.

Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust chairman, Murray Weakley, said: “We are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of locals and could not be prouder to be part of this community. We would like to thank every person and group who gave as well as the support from Westpac through the chopper appeal every year. Shirley Boys’ High principal John Laurenson says stand-downs are used to help students at the school. Last week the Pegasus Post revealed east Christchurch schools’ suspension statistics for 2014. The figures showed in 2014 Shirley Boys’ stood down 38 students, suspended 11, excluded four and expelled one. This is compared with 45 stood down in 2013, 11 suspended and three excluded. Mr Laurenson (right) said like all schools he would like to see no students taken out of school but sometimes these are tools that are used to help students. “It allows us to bring in wrap around services and social welfare services to help students. Things have changed, once upon a time we got rid of the problem but now we deal with it differently. A stand-down is one weapon of an arsenal of weapons we use to get things sorted out.” He said of a school of about 1250 to only have 38 stand-downs, which is only three per cent of the roll, was very good. “They are not necessarily bad kids. The main reason for a standdown is it’s a clear line in the sand, it allows time for kids to get out of the environment where they could

be leading other children. It’s not he’s a bad kid, it’s just a kid that needs correction. Every single human being at some stage needs to be corrected”. Mr Laurenson said the one expelled student was helped into a new school instead of simply being turfed out of the education system. Schools are not obliged to find a student over 16 years of age a new school but in this case Mr Laurenson said Shirley Boys’ did. This is the definition of an expulsion where as an exclusion means the school is obliged to find that student a new school because they are under 16. “While it may be that some schools try and remove difficult students as soon as they turn 16, in our case we try and meet our social and educational obligations, by retaining students.”

Dairy parking restrictions looked at BY KYLE KNOWLES A Burwood dairy owner is fed up with people parking in front of his store all day and has successfully lobbied for parking restrictions to be considered. Ever since the redevelopment of Burwood Hospital begun, owner Dipak Kalidas has had to put up with cars using the parking bay outside his Burwood Foodmarket as an all-day car park. He believes it is construction workers at the hospital who are parking there.

He said it was annoying and has cost his business money. “There’s plenty of parking further away but I don’t know why they park here. There’s always cars parked there.” He said customers have nowhere to park and will drive straight past. Mr Kalidas asked the city council for help but nothing could be done initially. He has opened up the back of the dairy to allow customers to park there but said it wasn’t as easy for customers to simply pull

into the bay. The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board will now consider whether to approve 10min parking restrictions in the parking bay outside the dairy. Mr Kalidas was relieved the restrictions were being considered. “Yeah, really happy because this will continue to happen until the hospital is built.” It has been recommended the community board approve the restrictions for the parking bay at tonight’s (Monday) meeting. It will cost $300 to install the signs.

Project director, Bryan Spinks said parking at Burwood Hospital is for staff, patients and their families. “It is a contractual requirement that contractors are not allowed to park in the staff or public parks on the site. However, some additional temporary parking has been made for some of the contractors and others are parking on the roads.” He said the Canterbury District Health Board had not received any complaints about contractors parking in surrounding areas.

Woolston Auto Surgery owner Roydon Smart said it seemed “crazy” to close the Ferry Rd shop because it served a lot of people. “The Woolston post shop is so busy, often it’s queued out onto the footpath.” Earlier this month, New Zealand Post revealed plans to expand postal and banking services in Ferrymead, which will see the Woolston branch close. NZ Post is looking for a tenant to fill the post shop building to run the postal services, but people wanting to use banking services and bill pay will have to travel to Ferrymead or Eastgate mall. Mr Smart has been in contact with Kiwibank and NZ Post to outline his concerns and has been handing out pamphlets to local business owners and residents to make them aware of what is happening. “I’ve had a business here since 1979, now they are moving the post office; always used this one. Now I’ll have to drive to do my banking, because with money you have to take it to the bank. It’s a super busy post office, it all adds up to be a stupid, selfish decision.”

Community to benefit from food factory The Food Factory Shop in Wainoni and Ferrymead is giving back to its community by donating $600 every month to local groups, organisations and individuals. The shops, started its Our Community fundraising scheme in May. Every month, jars are displayed in both shops, each representing a group. Any time a customer makes a purchase, they are given a token to vote. The customer then chooses who they want to support by placing the token in one of the jars. At the end of the month, the tokens are counted to see which group comes in first, second and third. Birthright Christchurch, an organisation that supports single

parents and caregivers, had the most tokens in June, winning $300. Manager Rhodora Sagles said it was wonderful to receive the donation. “The money will go towards our parents’ groups, which we facilitate twice a year. Speakers from various agencies share new practical skills and information. The sessions have been very helpful to single parents because they offer support and friendship, all while learning new things.” The Food Factory Shops are bakery and food outlets, which sell seconds, trials, dated, short dated, cancelled export orders and deleted line products from Baker

New netball gear for Linwood College Linwood College scored big this season, with new gear for the school’s growing number of netball players thanks to the ANZ netball grant scheme. Teacher in charge of netball, Courtney Flay, says the grant, which includes 20 balls, will be a big help for the school’s four new netball teams. “Netball was non-existent when I took over the project in 2014. That year, we started the season with one team and now, after lots of hard work, we’ve got five. “We’re really excited that the sport is growing so quickly but it’s tough to keep up with the demand for new gear. Winter gardening Susan Sanders, section curator of the central rose garden in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, is hosting a demonstration on the intricacies of the rose pruning process. Ronald McDonald’s new board member A Christchurch lawyer has been appointed as the newest member of the Ronald McDonald House South Island’s board table. Julie Hands has been bestowed the Institute of Directors’ First Steps in Governance Award, giving her an internship position on the charity’s board. Institute of Directors’ Canterbury branch chair Janice Fredric said the judges were impressed by Ms Hands’ ambition, focus and leadership potential. “Julie is an exceptional young woman who has already taken on a range of leadership roles in both her career and the community. Her breadth of skill and empathy for the cause will make her a real asset to the Ronald McDonald House South Island board.” Ms Hands, a resource management and commercial solicitor for Duncan Cotterill, says the award is an honour. “The board seems as though it has a great dynamic and there’s a lot of diverse knowledge and experience there. Extreme cold causes problems BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER The extreme frosts of the last week have resulted in a number of calls to properties where hot water cylinders have leaked and caused flooding in the building or where sprinkler systems have frozen solid and leaked. I can certainly understand, turning the hot water tap on in the kitchen at home first thing in the morning has resulted in slushy ice in the sink. We were fortunate enough though not to have our pipes freeze solid enough to split. There were also a number of car crashes caused by black ice. If it looks wet at all on those -5 deg C mornings then the road is almost certainly frozen solid. We all need to drive accordingly. It’s probably therefore a good time to mention the metre/heater rule again. This is a mantra the Fire Service has invented to give a rule of thumb about anything combustible near to something that could set it on fire. The drying of clothing in front of a fireplace or heater is fine except for the human tendency to want things to happen quickly causes us to place the damp clothes too close. We like to see the steam rise. Then the phone goes, or tea needs to be cooked or the kids do what kids do and attract our attention. Placed closer than a metre that steam will rise until no moisture is left. The clothing will keep on heating. It might scorch. It might ignite. The metre/heater rule simply saves this from happening.

New diabetes exercise group starts in Christchurch

ype 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.” For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese. Creating smiles for cancer patients GL Health Cancer has the ability to rob those affected of more than their physical health. “I am a ‘people person’ with an outgoing personality. Well, I used to be. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my demeanour changed, and it wasn’t long before my treatment became a lonely and nerveracking journey,” says Miretta, a Look Good Feel Better workshop participant. That’s why Look Good Feel Better exists. The national charity supports Kiwis at a time when they need it most, by providing an opportunity for participants to claim back their personality beyond being a cancer patient - and learn practical tools to combat the ongoing visual and emotional effects of therapy. “It truly was a morale-boosting makeover, I felt like one of the group instead of a patient. It boosted and improved my selfesteem – and felt so darn good!” Miretta says. “It’s often the first time many women will be seen by others without their wig or be touched by a person that isn’t doing so for medical purposes,” Clare O’Higgins, Look Good Feel Better’s general manager, says. “I rarely let people get close, other than those who are dear to me, but the women there all

Some people think an oil and filter change is servicing their car. We see a number of customers who are getting 12 minute oil and filter changes done and think their car has been serviced. Certainly this part of the service is better than nothing. I recommend that our fully trained mechanics service your vehicle. If you really want the quick alternative, we will match the price using cheaper oil and filters. Give me a call and I will be happy to discuss the alternative.
