AS IS WHERE IS sales of quakedamaged apartment blocks are hitting the market.

Body corporates are selling blocks of units once their insurance settlements come through because they can’t be bothered with long drawn-out repairs.

The latest on the market is 34 apartments which span 224-242 Salisbury St. They will be auctioned next month.

They are being marketed “as is where is”.

They have been temporarily strengthened so 33 of the apartments can stay occupied.

This reflects a growing trend among body corporates, Courtney Doig and Paul Vining of Colliers International said yesterday.

“This development is strategically positioned within walking distance to the thriving Victoria St precinct and the heart of Christchurch’s newly forming CBD. The complex is situated diagonally opposite Briscoes and a site earmarked for supermarket use,” Mr Doig told the New Zealand Herald.

“It offers significant holding income which will enable sufficient time to plan and develop surplus land.”

In the past 18 months, Colliers has transacted more than $25 million in sales of unit title apartment blocks in Christchurch.

By Bridget Rutherford THERE IS only one person the seagulls of Sumner wait for twice a day – an elderly woman in a red jacket.

Nancy Meherne will turn 86 next month, but that does not stop her from jumping on a cycle twice a day, and riding to Sumner beach, from her Head St home, armed with food scraps.

The scraps are for more than 100 hungry seagulls which have grown quite fond of her.

“I guess some people call me the seagull lady.”

Since the earthquakes, Nancy has noticed fewer shells on the beach, and she suspects liquefaction might have something to do with it.

Before the quakes, she used to walk along the beach and spot about 26 different varieties of shells, but now there are very few, and the seagulls are hungry.

They used to eat the shellfish, she said.

“The seagulls just don’t know what to do.”

So she began feeding them this year.

Rotary club cashes in on real estate

By Andrew King A ROTARY club has found a great way to raise funds – cash in on the property market.

Tomorrow it hopes an open day on a property it has up for sale will again benefit the community.

The Rotary Club of Hornby got into the property game in the late 1990s, and have raised between $300,000-$400,000 from five houses they have sold.

“We decided that we won’t spend any more time standing on street corners making $500,” club spokesman Bob Paton laughed.

“We had to look at different pathways to get the job done.”

Its latest property is in Rolleston – a four-bedroom home in Austen Lane, on the market for $525,000.

The money raised goes to Abbeyfield Societies. The society builds affordable homes for elderly people in Christchurch.

The Rotary club builds its homes using members who are builders and tradespeople, and gets help from suppliers.

The Rolleston house has been built by Devon Construction.

This means that when houses are sold at market rates, good profits can be made which goes back into the community.

POLICE MAY know more today about the disappearance of Korean woman Yoon Sook Chun, who was last seen in 2009.

An interpreter spoke to a woman by phone in Korea yesterday, a person Christchurch detectives have been told could help with their inquiries.

The interview was transcribed into English and Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti said police were likely to know more when they read it today.

He said there was also a second person in Korea who he was trying to contact about the case.

Bryan Barry - trainer at Round 12 Boxing, trainer of Joseph Parker, and brother of Kevin Barry What does a weekend in Christchurch usually look like for you?

It’s getting fairly busy around Round 12 Boxing, so we’re a bit busy at the moment on weekends, and the sport is really growing in the amateur fighter world, which is great. On weekends, I’ll go and watch my son play rugby, then hopefully watch the grandson play rugby too. You’ve got to try to find time for all of that; you make it work if it’s important to you.

You’ll go crazy otherwise. I had a heart attack at the start of the year, so you learn quickly that you have to really slow down, otherwise the pressure gets to you and you can get run down.

Do you have a favourite place in Canterbury?

Oh that’s a tough one. It’d probably have to be Akaroa, anywhere in Banks Peninsula really. My family is from there, so we go over there and through the hills when we can. I haven’t had a free weekend for a long time, we’ve just been so busy with boxing.

Do you have any favourite restaurants or cafes?

Winnie Bagoes, but I have to say that because the guy sponsors us. We go down to the Harewood Tavern for meals and all that, it’s a really good space.

The Rose and Thistle would be my favourite pub; but obviously I haven’t done a lot of drinking this year, you get told to keep yourself in check after heart problems. So I’ve really tried to wind it back as much as possible this year.

Do you catch up on any TV or reading on the weekend?

I’m actually an avid Trackside viewer, so I keep up with that when I can. It’s just nice sometimes to sit down, kick my feet up and have a beer and watch TV. I’ve just finished reading Mike Tyson’s book, I mainly read sports stories, biographies, that kind of thing. I’m not really into reading stuff like 50 Shades of Grey!

What would a perfect weekend in Christchurch include?

A beautiful summer’s day, sitting out with family and friends, out on the deck enjoying each others’ company. You just have to make the most of life, because you never know what’s around the corner.

A LOOK INSIDE . . . HOW TO MAKE AN AWARD-WINNING PIE

Why we eat millions of

Coupland’s Bakeries won the Commercial/ Wholesale category at the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards this week, so reporter Andrew Voerman thought, why not see how they do it?

EACH WEEK, about 100,000 pies leave the Coupland’s Bakeries site in Sockburn, heading out on trucks, to stores as far south as Invercargill and as far north as Tauranga, and eventually into the mouths of hungry New Zealanders.

That means it produces more than five million of the things each year – mince, chicken, bacon and plenty else, soaked in gravy, then encased in a pastry containers, perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

On Tuesday night, the company

took home first place in the Commercial/Wholesale category at the Bakel’s New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards, following on from a second and a third in the first two years it entered.

In that category, the nation’s high-volume bakers (those that produce more than 60,000 pies per week) are judged on the quality of their mince and cheese offering.

So what then, does the company’s managing director, Karel Adriaens, think makes a good mince and cheese pie?

“At the end of the day, the pie has to be hot. People don’t want to eat cold pies. The pastry obviously you want is flaky, you want it a little bit crispy, not too soft, not too dry – the flavour of the meat and the right amount of cheese and the right type of cheese is critical, to get the balance of those three together.”

And head baker Phil Lyons?

“To me, if you’ve got really good pastry, it just really complements everything else. That’s the fundamental foundation of a good pie, having that nice flaky pastry that’s crunchy in your mouth, but then dissolves away in your mouth, you can’t beat it – everyone loves pastry.

“And when you’ve got wellseasoned, cooked meat and cheese – it’s unbeatable.”

“The whole pie process, without going too much into the whole secret side of things, we really focus on the processes and the systems we put in place, and making sure they’re measured and we’re getting the results.

“It’s a big process. A pie might seem like a simple thing, but from start to finish, there’s a lot involved it. We really dissect all those avenues and really look at them and make sure we’re doing the best we can.”

And while the talk of secrets can seem a little cute, reminiscent of Colonel Sanders and his herbs and spices, both Adriaens and Lyons insist it makes a difference.

“Machinery can only do so much,” says Lyons.

“It’s the people that operate them and their skills, and just having that history with the product, it really plays a massive part. The team here have been here for a long time, and they’re really passionate about what they’re doing, being passionate and having those skills, that’s key.”

The Bakels awards are in their

19th year, and when they come around each July, they are often greeted with big helpings of mirth, because it can appear a bit odd at first to take something as humble as a mince pie and assess it so seriously.

But when you think about it, why shouldn’t pies, and pie makers get recognition for their work?

New Zealanders do eat a lot of them, and there’s a lot of interest in where to find the best ones.

A sampling of the guidelines provided with entry forms shows just how serious the competition is.

Lyons’ official title at Coupland’s is research and development manager, and while the recipe for the mince and cheese has remained roughly the same for the last 20 years or so, he has plenty of other products to tinker with.

“We’re continuously trying new ideas and we’ve always got an eye out there. Obviously our reputation as Coupland’s Bakeries is one of the best in New Zealand, we think, and we continuously try to aim for the trends and what’s happening in the market, and what our customers are really wanting.”

Lyons joined Coupland’s only two months ago, and says the company’s success owes a lot to its team-oriented nature.

“It’s hats off to the whole team here, it’s definitely a team effort, from Karel right on down through the whole team, it’s team-focused and we’re working on creating the final product and that’s why we think we’re very good at what we do.”

Adriaens has been a judge of the awards for the last 15 years (though, should it need stating, not in the categories where his pies are entered) and says he has seen plenty of change in the industry in that time.

“The pie industry in New Zealand has improved substantially.

Bakels New Zealand, the instigators of the pie awards, they started that 19 years ago – I started judging 15 years ago, and in the earlier days, 95 per cent of the pies, you’d write off, there was only five per cent of them, we’d judge those were quality.

“Today, it’s the other way around.

It’s 95 per cent of the pies (that are great) – the quality and standard of the pies has improved significantly – and I actually credit the pie competition with achieving that objective, because everybody’s wanting to win it, so the standards have been created within the industry as to what a good pie should look like.”

Home repair audit needed and more

I

n a recent opinion column I declared wholesale change is required at the EQC. Among the issues mentioned were the offspring of senior EQC managers, recruited on eye-watering salaries, with little or no experience.

This week there’s the report about the daughter of top EQC Manager Gail Kettle being removed from a case after complaints about her conduct and expertise.

Nikki Kettle first started work for EQC in 2011 on $75 an hour. Later she set up a building repair company with an EQC colleague. How can this happen? Even now, EQC is refusing to state her building experience.

Nikki Kettle over-rode Fletcher’s engineers who found it likely ground settlement (earthquakes) had created a void under some townhouses. Kettle doubted such voids existed, even though a resident demonstrated how he can stick his tape measure under his concrete pad for 8 metres. What’s really interesting is that Fletcher’s appears on this occasion to have sided with the homeowners. In all the EQC cases I’ve been involved with, never once has Fletcher’s increased the overall cost of an EQC scope of works.

That is really concerning on a number of levels. Initial scopes of works almost invariably under-estimate what’s required.

By never, in my experience, increasing the overall cost of what needs to be repaired, Fletcher’s is doing more than shortchanging homeowners; it seems to go

against all commercial practices and their shareholder interests. You have to wonder about the payment terms.

Our taxpayer watchdog, the Auditor General, reviewed the Canterbury Home Repair Programme in 2013. She said Fletcher Construction gets a margin on the direct EQC repair cost plus the salaries/ wages/costs of its staff. Overall project management costs then were estimated at about 12% of the cost of a repair. The Auditor General found that at the higher end of what was reasonable; she said achieving overall ‘reasonable’ project management costs depended heavily on EQC completing home repairs by its deadline of December 2014.

EQC and Fletcher’s are now nearly eight months past deadline with around 2,200 mostly more complex repairs to complete, not to mention ‘Fletchered’ repairs which need re-doing. My view is this has got so bad it demands a Royal Commission into the Canterbury Home Repair Programme.

The Auditor General could contribute to the case for that. In releasing her October 2013 report she promised a follow-up review on final programme costs.

Hopefully she is reviewing how much Fletcher’s has benefitted from the earthquakes and why, in my experience, it has never once increased the overall cost of an EQC scope of works; why does Fletcher’s keeps winning tenders, like the north/east frame over several Canterbury bids. She might also re-examine how EQC has ‘managed’ conflicts of interest.

How do you produce 100,000 pies a week?

Coupland’s Bakeries managing director Karel Adriaens explains “Putting a pie together, you have pastry and you have meat, which come together halfway through the process.

“The pastry area is where the doughs are made – all the temperatures have to be absolutely spot-on, between 18 and 19 deg C, with the fats and the flours and the dough.

“We then incorporate that into an extrusion line, which actually extrudes the dough out into sheets, it folds the fat, then rolls the fat, folds it, rolls it, folds it, rolls it, until it comes off the end of the line.

“For the top pastry you have about 128 layers of sheeting and that gives you that nice fluffy top. Bottom pastry, that’s a little bit different, it doesn’t have as many folds, it’s a little bit denser, but they go, still, through the same process, we just have to adjust the machine for it.

“Once they come through that process, the rolls of pastry come off on rolls, and that is then pushed through to the

pie line area.

“On the other side of it is the cooking area. We have three big cooking facilities, and that’s where we add the mince, and the ingredients – we do a few tricks there which I won’t elaborate too much on, to get the flavour profiles and so forth – it’s critical that the time and temperature of the mince is consistent to make sure that the cook is consistent as well.

“Then we pump the meat across to the pie lines, we bring the rolls across with the pastry, the pastry then is laid on top of the tins, a system deposits the meat into each tin, then the top pastry goes on, and then there’s a system that takes off the surplus pastry, and then that’s rested, before it goes into the oven.

“Obviously in the oven it’s baked off, in one end and out the other, and then it goes through a cooling process, before it’s de-tinned, then it goes into crates, and then it goes into another cooling process to bring the temperature down to about 7 deg C. “Then it’s ready for the wrapping process, then it goes down to another chiller, which brings it down to about 3 deg C, then it’s ready for the market.”

By Tom Doudney A NASA team will leave Christchurch today having observed the birth and death of stars and the rarely seen passage of Pluto through a star’s shadow.

A specially-converted Boeing 747SP aircraft known as Sofia (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) has spent the last five weeks using Christchurch Airport as a base to make its flights.

The combination of clear night skies, dry winter and airport infrastructure here are particularly useful to Sofia’s work.

Also on offer during this mission was the chance to view the ‘occultation’ of Pluto on June 30, only two weeks before NASA’s New Horizons probe reached the dwarf planet.

The only place on earth to observe this from the centre of Pluto’s shadow was a 30 sq km area in the skies close to Wellington. Sofia had to be there at the exact right time to capture the event which lasted only 2min.

Sofia operations director Michael Toberman hailed the success of the mission, although the data gathered could take up to a year to analyse.

Sofia will be on starlive.kiwi next week and later on demand “We had to relocate, based on measurements from MIT that were relayed to the aircraft a few hours prior to the observation,” Mr Toberman said.

“The scientists were extremely well sited and that we reached our position required to make the observation really demonstrate the capability of the aircraft.”

The observations of Pluto’s at-

mosphere would allow NASA to confirm observations made by New Horizons during its orbit.

Mr Toberman said the team was pleased with what had been achieved during its time in Christchurch, with 14 successful observations of various phenomena made.

This included the large and small Magellanic Clouds (galaxies), protostars in the process of being formed and dying stars throwing material into space.

The observations would help to “give us a better understanding of the universe and how stars and planets form. When a star is dying it ejects material into the universe that can then be used to build stars and planets.”

Sofia will be based in Christchurch for short stints for at least the next five years.

Shaun Stockman Our People Developer with a big heart Shaun Stockman has been a panel beater, car salesman and real estate agent. He is now a big player in central city property development, a family man and chairs a group that helps wayward youth. He speaks to Gabrielle Stuart It must be really satisfying to walk through the city now, and see it develop.

Well, I work here now, so I come through every day. When we first came back to our building in the city in 2013 there was no one else on the street. You might see the odd tourist. But it’s really busy now. It’s a good feeling.

What was it like to lose so many of the central city buildings you developed, in the earthquakes?

I was always very attached to the buildings emotionally. But on the day of the quake I saw people dead and saw people injured, so in my mind I balanced things off.

If it was a fire that took one of my prized buildings I’d be gutted, but here there were more important things lost.

I know this month’s demolition of Westende House, the first building built in the city after the Feb 2011 quake, is still a raw subject – what are your thoughts on it now?

It was for a couple of months, I didn’t even want to drive past it.

I just thought it was an absolute waste of a good building. It was designed and detailed and fitted out well, so it was just a waste.

But you have got to move on, you can’t dwell on it. It’s like a divorce.

You’ve got to make a clean break.

They announced officially in 2013 that it would need to come down, but when did you first know?

Very early on, actually. It was finished on July 12, and on the first or second of August the blueprint was announced. I was told then that there was a possibility we might be able to keep it, but I sort of read the writing on the wall and I knew it was a goner.

Tell me a bit about your background in real estate – what stands out?

I learnt you could never judge a book by its cover. And the variety of people you met, they are the colour and fabric of life.

One month I sold a house on the hill for $880,000, which was a lot of money then, to a couple who were retired farmers. They were a neat, neat couple. They had us over for drinks, and they still stay in touch. At the same time I sold a flat to a lady who had lost her husband, and the house was about to be a mortgagee sale. So I sold

the house for her and found her a little flat, but there was some mix up where she hadn’t been given the right key. So I took the key down to her, and the family were all there, hungry, so I went down the road and got them some pizza.

The family still stay in touch, 13 or 14 years on.

It’s the people I remember, and I still miss that some days in the office when I’m looking at budgets and feasibility. I miss those chats, and taking people to find what they want.

Do you think you could ever go back?

No, not now – I’ve got the tiger by the tail. But some days I would love to, I honestly would.

Going back further still, your first job was as a panel beater – what drew you to it?

It was just because I love cars, and I still do.

What do you have in the garage at the moment?

I have got a Mercedes SL roadster, an Audi convertible and a V8 Mercedes-Benz. But most days I drive a Hilux, just because it is more practical and you can park it in a shingle pit.

How long did you work in panel beating?

It was about four years. Then I got a job selling cars, and then I sold real estate. And I bought my first investment property when I was 24, a wee cottage in Sydenham.

Do you see yourself working as a developer for a long time yet?

No, I’m in my mid-50s now so I think I’ve got probably another five or so active years. Then the family will carry it on. There are three families who own (development company) KPI Rothschild, so our family own that and a lot of other things in Christchurch.

What’s working with your family like?

It’s good, but it does have its challenges. My daughter works here doing financial administration, so I get to see her every day and hear about the grandchildren.

And with family you know you can trust them 100 per cent and they have your best interests at heart.

There seem to be a lot of family businesses working in development here at the moment.

It is interesting, isn’t it? It’s certainly not all the bigs boys with

the big toys, like they said it would be.

When you’re working on a development like Stranges Lane, how involved are you in the process?

I’m all over it. The detail, the finishes, the fittings, the structure.

The whole process.

So what was the vision there?

Glass, raw concrete, steel, timber, all that sort of feel. I didn’t want it too wide, it needed to be intimate, for want of a better word. But I have been to Melbourne and the buildings you see there are something else. They’re organic and interesting. That was the goal here.

Your buildings are a real mix of the heritage and the ultramodern. Is there a style you prefer?

I still like the older buildings, but I am warming to the new ones. I love Stranges.

Do you go there often yourself?

Yes, at least once or twice a week. Often in the evening, and maybe on a Sunday for lunch.

Beside your own projects, what are you most looking forward to seeing built in Christchurch?

Probably the residential developments. I think that will add a whole new dimension to the central city, one that we have never seen before. People will want coffee or want to visit Ballantynes, so it will feed everything.

Where are you living at the moment?

In West Melton. We’ve got 5ha there, with some horses for my wife. She loves horses.

You’ve been a big advocate of the Live Central campaign – do you think you might live in the central city yourself?

Not as long as I’m married, no! My wife loves the country and it is nice living there, but if she said yes I would move to city. There’s something about the bustle of having people around.

I would live here in a heartbeat.

Tell me a bit about your family. How many children do you have?

Four, and I’m about to have grandchild number six.

My first wife and I started young. She was the fifth generation to get married by 17 and have children by 19. And then our daughter started young too, bless her.

And they’re all in Christchurch?

Yes. My son’s a builder, and my other two daughters work in

property management with their mum.

Apart from the cars, do you have any other hobbies?

I mountain bike. I also chair the Cross Roads Youth With a Future Trust, which I have been actively involved with for about 13 years.

Some of the youth are as young as six, and they’re all funded.

How did you get involved there?

I actually went down one night to give a guy advice on his lease. It was quite appalling really because the building two doors down could be bought for $30,000, but this person was being charged the earth. So I went round a couple of people I knew.

One guy said I have a ute I just sold for $7000 and you can have that, and in total we ended up with $40,000. So we bought the building. The landlord actually rang back to talk about the lease and I said we have bad news for you, we’re taking your tenant. He was mortified.

But that was all funded by donations from people, and not wealthy people, just people willing to buy into the cause, and go in there and

make a difference. If you can get one child on the straight and narrow, the impact of that on the future families or their victims is huge.

But people sit in their ivory towers and think they can’t make a difference.

Do you think there’s potential to change things in the east?

I think it’s sadly becoming a them and us situation, with the westies and the easties. The east is really one of the nicest parts of the city, for the beaches and waterways and the estuary, and it could be something amazing in the future.

If there are cafes or tracks or a roller dome built in the red zone it could give it that energy again Do you think that will happen?

Sadly, I don’t think it will. It’s hard enough to get the anchor projects done.

Once you step back from development work, what do you think you’ll do?

I just want to do a bit of travel, and a bit of charity work. Help out where I can and do things for people.

I’ll be ready for some quiet.

CERA on the path to transition The public has one more week to provide views on the Draft Transition Recovery Plan which outlines the changing role of Government in the recovery of Christchurch.

As 18 April 2016 draws closer, it is planned that many of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority’s work programmes and responsibilities will be wound up as they are completed, some will be transferred before then and some will transition to existing and new agencies to continue to support recovery following the end of CERA. A proposal for new legislation to support continuing regeneration is also included in the draft plan.

CERA acting Chief Executive John Ombler says it’s time for change to begin following the groundwork laid by the organisation in the initial stages of the recovery.

“We want to make sure the future direction of this recovery embraces the great work done so far, but has more of a focus on regeneration. We have a

framework that we think addresses the key areas, but we need to hear what the community says before we can fine-tune the plan and confirm the way forward on certain issues.”

Proposals include the creation of a new entity, which may be called ‘Regenerate Christchurch’, to drive the central city rebuild and an approach for reporting on priority recovery issues.

Decisions on the transfer of functions such as psychosocial recovery to the Ministry of Health, and management and clearance of the red zones to Land Information New Zealand, are also outlined in the draft plan.

Restoration proposed for Victoria Square People are being encouraged to let CERA know if the right balance has been achieved in the Draft Victoria Square Restoration Plan.

The draft restoration plan was released last week following feedback from the public that they wanted to see Victoria Square retained as a green, tranquil space. The proposed design focuses on retaining its existing character and enhancing the area to improve accessibility and amenities.

Elements such as the curved paths, the floral clock, all of the trees, the statues and the pou will remain in their original locations while new features include widening paths, installing more seating and lighting, upgrading paving, a punt stop and artwork installations. The draft restoration plan also includes fully restoring the Bowker Fountain.

Community input was considered by the project team, CERA’s strategic partners and an independent reference group, which was specifically established to ensure the community’s wishes were accurately reflected in the design, when developing the restoration plan.

​Blown away by a night at the opera

WHAT A great evening to go to the opera.

It was a Tuesday at 6pm. The streets in town were largely empty – a couple of people scurrying to get home from work – businesses closing their doors for the day.

Gloucester St was particularly quiet.

Some people sat smoking outside a Chinese restaurant. A torn poster advertised a concert long gone, and an older couple peered inside the shop windows down the neighbouring New Regent St. We neared the Isaac Theatre Royal – my three sisters, and one of their friends. “Ooh, this is exciting…”

Outside, posters advertised Puccini’s Madama Butterfly – the opera. Small groups of straggling students entered through the heavy gold doors, and we followed.

It was the final dress rehearsal, and we were the audience. We’d not been inside the building since it was restored.

Inside, a dazzling crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling – emitting a warm light which illuminated the decorative entrance.

Patterned carpet met my heels, and a grand marble staircase twisted upwards, to my left. We followed it.

Upstairs, our entrance was marked with brass letters: “DRESS CIRCLE,” it read.

Inside, the theatre was almost exactly as I remembered it. I hadn’t been there since a performance of

Gilt designs adorned the walls, and elaborate décor twisted around the balconies to the sides of the theatre. Every seat was filled. The stage was set. The lights dimmed.

A quick warm-up of the orchestra, some polite clapping, and we were away.

When the first singer, dressed

in impeccable white, opened his mouth to belt out the first few lines, a shiver went up my spine.

“Why is it in Italian?” my sister whispered in my ear.

“You can read the subtitles, on the screen.”

Soon a group of elaborately dressed Geishas appeared, singing, as the moving set shifted and changed.

New characters appeared and disappeared, warbling and crooning, hitting the most incredibly high notes – still and clear.

I was caught up in the story – fol-

lowing the characters – elbows on knees. Enchanted.

Intermission came as a surprise, then the end – too soon.

The singers finished to deafening applause.

What a performance. We left our seats, snapped a couple of photos under the painted ceiling downstairs, then joined the crowd, leaving.

Effervescent laughter filled the streets as the bubbly young operagoers spilled out the golden doors, leaving the grandeur of the theatre behind.

We were swept up in the current and pushed outside – a sharp breath, and the chilly night air met my lungs. Pulling my jacket tighter to ward off the cold, I did a quick head count of our little posse as the crowd dispersed into the street.

The five of us regrouped, walking away from the brightly lit theatre façade into the deep black of night.

The fairy lights on New Regent St twinkled, the stars above shone… what a beautiful evening to go to the opera.

Māori Language Week celebrates 40 years

THE 40TH anniversary of Māori Language Week starts on Monday.

This year’s theme is “Whāngaihia te reo Māori ki ngā mātua”; which means nurture the language in parents so that it may grow.

This backs up the original ideal of “Arohatia te Reo”, meaning cherish the language.

Celebrations will take place in Christchurch during the week, including the city council’s waiata group performing at libraries throughout the city.

SuperValue and Fresh Choice supermarkets are also celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori by running week-long, in-store colouring competition and events from July 27 to August 2.

Manager of Wairakei Rd SuperValue, Gurpreet Singh said: “We will be putting up colouring posters, also the Maori names for fruit and vege in the produce section, which keeps it interesting for the kids, (and) gets them learning.

We’ll set up tables for colouring, and offer to take pictures and put it online, so they go in the draw for the competition.”

Three winners will receive $250 of Huia books in the colouring competition.

Dump protest meeting planned

The first Māori programme to run on New Zealand television was called Koha, meaning gift, and was first aired in 1980.

However, there was controversy after pākehā presenters started using ‘Kia Ora’ as an opening greeting to their shows, as pākehā viewers only wanted to hear English on television.

The controversy continued when, in 1984, national telephone tolls operator Naida Glavish began greeting callers with, ‘Kia Ora’.

When her supervisors found out, they insisted that she only use English greetings, Ms Glavish refused and was demoted.

There was such a backlash from the public that, prime minister at the time, Robert Muldoon intervened and Ms Glavish returned to her job.

SYDENHAM business owners and residents have a clear message – we don’t want a dump in our neighbourhood.

And the group will try and get that message across on Monday as they take to the streets to protest the opening of a waste transfer station in the area.

The protest demonstration is set to take place at noon, on the corner of Cass and Colombo Sts, outside the shed the station is meant to go in.

In May, Environment Canterbury granted EnviroWaste a 10-year resource consent to discharge odour and dust into the air from the KiwiRail-owned shed.

A city council appointed com-

missioner also approved the consent last month.

Sydenham Incorporated secretary Lorraine Thompson said the group decided to hold the protest at a recent meeting.

“We’ve got to do something.”

She said the group was making signs, and might walk down Colombo St. “I think we’re going to have a lot of people there.”

A petition against the station was started in May and has generated more than 900 signatures.

ECan has received one appeal from Lahmajou Company which makes Giannis flatbreads.

Proceedings of the appeal will now be made by the Environment Court.

Stout glaze for ham

Roast turkey with cashew stuffing

Ingredients 1½ cups Stout, or other dark beer 1 cup Brown sugar, loosely packed 2 Tbsp Wholegrain mustard 2 tsp Ground ginger 1½ tsp Ground cardamom 1 tsp Ground cinnamon

Ingredients 3 Tbsp Olive oil 1 Onion, finely chopped 1½ cups Breadcrumbs, fresh ½ cup Roasted cashew nuts, roughly chopped ¼ cup Fresh parsley, chopped 3.5 kgs Turkey 1 splash Olive oil

Directions Combine all the glaze ingredients in a medium saucepan over a low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat to medium and simmer until the glaze becomes syrupy (about 5min).

1. Preheat oven or covered barbecue to 180 deg C 2. Place ham on a rack in a large roasting pan.

Half fill roasting pan with water and brush ham liberally with a third to half the glaze.

Reserve the rest. Place in oven, or in hooded barbecue.

3. Allow one hour and 20min for a 4 kilo half leg. You will need to baste the ham every 15min.

Ham preparation Use a small knife, score a zig-zag line around the base right through the skin. Starting at the other end of the ham, run the knife under the skin and over the top of the fat layer.

Use your fingers to peel the skin back. The skin should peel away leaving the fat in one piece.

Use your knife to score the fat in a criss-cross pattern, making diamonds about 1.5cm long.

Don’t cut down into the ham flesh.

When you have finished, stud the centre of each diamond with one clove.

Rum and cola glaze Ingredients ½ cup Rum ⅓ cup Maple syrup 1 Lemon, zested and juiced 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard, or hot mustard 1 packet Cloves 1 can of your favourite cola

Directions Mix rum with maple syrup, the zest and juice of a lemon, and Dijon or hot mustard.

Score and stud ham with cloves.

Brush the glaze all over, bake in shallow bath of your favourite cola and baste ham frequently as you go.

Directions Heat oil in a saucepan, add onion and cook for 10min to soften but not colour.

Remove to cool. Combine cold onion with the rest of the stuffing ingredients and season well with salt and pepper.

Heat oven to 180 deg C. Wash turkey and dry inside and out with paper towels. Place turkey in an oven pan. Pack stuffing into the cavity of the turkey and tie legs together with string to keep secure.

Drizzle turkey with a little extra olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Roast for 2½ hours or according to turkey packaging instructions. Baste regularly.

Remove turkey from the oven and rest for 10min before slicing. Serve with gravy made with the pan juices.

Lincoln Uni Div 1 One of New Zealand’s oldest university rugby clubs founded in 1887, Lincoln University Rugby Club is a hot favourite to win in this Sunday’s Canterbury Metropolitan Hawkins Division One Trophy.

o far undefeated, the club is hoping to repeat a success it last had back in 1981.

Nicknamed the RAMS, the team is certain of huge local support from current and past students and their loyal mascot. Lincoln won their place after beating New Brighton in the semifinal last week, laying to rest a jinx that had seen them trip at the semifinal stages for the past two years. Lincoln University flanker Wade McRae won the inaugural Hawkins Medal for the season’s Most Valuable Player. He became the second Lincoln player to win the MVP award in the last three years with first-five Finn Russell, who later went on to represent Scotland, getting that recognition in 2013.

The winning of the Hawkins Cup for the last three years has sharpened the team’s appetite for the division’s big prize and now, their eyes are firmly set on winning the grand final and gaining the Hawkins Trophy itself. Their supporters are encouraged to wear blue and gold and be in good voice for what’s shaping up to be a fantastic game of rugby.

It is wonderful to hear both you and your roses have done well after much upheaval. Do not despair with the latest planting site for your beloved roses. They are remarkably versatile and will happily grow in the heavy soil with clay base. In fact many rose experts suggest that roses will be more successful in a heavier rather than a lighter soil. However it is advantageous to apply side dressings of Daltons Compost or Daltons Premium Flower Bed Mix during the winter months before your first application of rose fertiliser in late October/ early November.

As we enter into the drier summer months, Daltons Mulch & Grow can be applied around the base of the rose plant to help retain moisture in the soil and prevent weed growth.

Some people prefer their curries with just a little hint of spice, whereas others like to totally immerse themselves in a sensory experience that leaves them tingling for hours if not days.

No matter how hot you like it, you can be growing a wide number of your curry ingredients at home. Not only will this make your curries cheaper to conjure up, but the flavours and rewards will be even greater.

Of course, there are some seasonal variances with curryingredient plants, and the ones mentioned here are either able to be harvested or planted now.

Vietnamese mint

(Persicaria odorata – also known as Vietnamese coriander or hot mint) This herb is a base ingredient in laksa and lighter curries. Hardy to the elements, it is the perfect yearround curry crop. Happy in both pots and the garden, the leaves can be used fresh in salads or cooked lightly in creamy broths. The flavour is distinctive with some describing it as a cross between mint and coriander, whereas I find it has a slight aniseed note with a touch of pepper. As the name suggests, it features strongly in Vietnamese cooking.

Gardening Guide Strawberries Strawberries are one of New Zealand’s favourite summer fruits. Although strawberries are frost hardy and can be planted all year round they are best planted through autumn/winter to establish larger fruit with higher yields. A healthy plant is capable of producing fruit for up to 6 months. They require minimal space in the garden or alternatively can be grown successfully in pots and tubs.

Strawberries are one of the quickest of all the berry fruits to produce a crop. The plant is usually only retained for one or two years before it is replaced with a new one. This is because they produce at their best on their first and second year and decline each year thereafter. There is however still hope after you have bought these little gems. Each plant usually sends out runners; these can be cut off the mother plant and replanted to create new plants. By doing this you are guaranteed successful production year after year. sweet flavour of the fruit.

Planting in the garden Strawberries need a sunny, warm, well drained position that is humus rich and slightly acidic. Dig in plenty of compost or Oderings Fruit & Veggie Mix at the time of planting to improve drainage and build up the surrounding soil. Incorporate Super Phosphate or General Garden Fertiliser to encourage root growth, then give the bed time to settle before planting.

Plant strawberries in rows of mounds or ridges; this helps with drainage, prevents root disease and keeps the roots warmer, increasing growth and production. Mound up prepared soil; place a strip of polythene or three layers of newspaper over the top leaving enough excess at the sides to secure down. Using a craft knife make a hole in the top, big enough to plant your strawberry. I find it easiest to make a cross (+) shape so the hole isn’t too big. Place the plant into the hole making sure your roots aren’t crushed (you can trim if needed), so your foliage is sitting on top of the polythene; place rows 20-30cm apart. If using newspaper you can then add mulch over the top, e.g., pea straw, sphagnum moss, etc.

Plant the strawberries at 15cm apart with the crown above ground level. At the start of spring apply Strawberry Fertiliser. This is high in potash and will encourage fruiting; a second application in autumn is also beneficial.

It is as widely used in Indian and Sri Lankan recipes, and can be bought dried (and sometimes fresh) in Asian supermarkets. It is a frost tender shrub, and in most parts of New Zealand, is best grown indoors or in a pot, where it can be moved inside over the winter months. The dark green, glossy foliage is highly flavoursome, and is used as a base ingredient in the early stages of a recipe.

THIS FUNCTIONAL natural-materials willow whisk looks great in the kitchen, and is useful in so many ways.

Use it as a table crumb-sweeper, to distribute oil around your wok or pan, or to whisk up an omelette.

Best of all, when its use-by date is up, simply toss your organic whisk in the compost and create another.

MATERIALS: • secateurs

• slender (4-5mm diameter) willow wands (enough to form a bunch a little thicker than a broom handle) • ruler • scissors • sticky tap • natural fibre, undyed string

Punchy Toyota 86 WHEN production of Toyota’s MR2 ended in 2007, it looked as if the company would abandon forever the idea of rear-wheel-drive sports cars.

However, in conjunction with Subaru, Toyota is back in that segment with a car they simply badged 86, in reference to the sporty Corolla AE86 of the mid-80s.

The AE86 was also known as Trueno, Sprinter and Levin, depending on the markets where it was sold.

The 86 isn’t exactly new, it was launched in 2012 and landed in New Zealand in 2013. The car this evaluation focuses on is a revised model which has had a cosmetic upgrade along with some suspension revisions, both of which have enhanced the model.

I’ve been lucky to experience several 86 drives on my home patch, and in this instance the changes to the suspension are noticeable improvements; compliance, absorption and ride comfort have increased dramatically, yet the changes don’t come with a loss of performance, the 86 is still the affordable sports car that has captured the imagination of followers globally.

The 86 is built solely by Subaru, yet Toyota take the lion’s share of production; consequently, the engineering which has gone into the model is biased toward the Subaru way of engineering techniques. Up front sits a 2-litre, horizontally-opposed (boxer) engine, it drives to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or sixspeed automatic transmission. The test car was the manual and, by far, it would be my choice if I was ever in a position to buy this fabulous little tourer.

As you would expect from Subaru (and Toyota), the 86 is beautifully built, and it is built in a fashion where the aspects of power to weight, weight balance (50:50) and access to oversteer have been a high manufacturing

Fresh engines for Ford Kuga AT FIRST glance you would think not a lot has changed with Ford’s new Kuga.

Well, you’d be right, in appearance it is pretty much the popular SUV which is already familiar on our roads. However, it has had a bit of a cosmetic refresh here and there and given it is not long into its lifecycle, I guess we could expect further enhancements along the way.

All that aside, what has changed is the introduction of new engines, the Kuga is available here with three engine options, all turbocharged. There’s a 1.5-litre petrol engine to kick the range off, there’s a 2-litre petrol engine and a 2-litre diesel.

The test car was the entrylevel model, although some might think the 1.5-litre engine would jeopardise performance; that’s simply not true, Ford is undergoing a massive engineering push to develop small capacity turbocharged engines which they are branding EcoBoost.

I’ve driven several EcoBoost engines in various applications, and have always been impressed with their refined operating nature and incredible power versus economy figures.

In the Kuga nothing has changed, the 1498cc engine is rated at 134kW and 240Nm of

torque, and it’s where those figures are developed that’s most extraordinary. Peak power is developed at just 5700rpm, while maximum torque is available all of the way from 1600rpm to 5000rpm. The result is a fluid flow of power all through the rev range.

Ford also rates the twin-camshaft unit with a seven-litre per 100km (40mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating. The trip computer was constantly hovering around 9l/100km (31mpg) when I was behind the wheel.

These are good figures for a car which weighs in around 1600kg, so they should please the Kuga buyer come fill-up time and you don’t have to be gentle on the throttle to pick up good fuel usage results, the engine is just so lively and responsive it is nice to feel its delivery.

Sure, the Kuga is not a performance car, it is designed for functionality and practicality, but it will whisk through a highway overtake in 5sec (80km/h to 120km/h), and will lunge to

I pushed the Kuga hard through the tight bits, and it has handling ability well beyond its design parameters.

The combination of power and handling stretches beyond the SUV concept, which will please those who like to be well involved as a driver.

Deep down I’m a bit of a fan of European Fords, I’ve owned several over the years, and have always related to the dynamics which provide an entertaining drive along with the practical elements which suit the purpose of the vehicle. The Kuga fits that mould well.

Fisiiahi ready for comeback after injury GLEN FISIIAHI is set for his first NRL appearance in more than 15 months after being named on the wing for the Warriors’ Round 20 game against Manly at Mt Smart Stadium tomorrow.

The 24-year-old speedster’s 2014 season ended with a shoulder injury against Cronulla on April 5 last year, a week after he’d scored four tries in the club’s victory over Wests Tigers.

After recovering from surgery

Fisiiahi made a try-scoring return in the Warriors’ New South Wales Cup side against Penrith in midApril only to have his comeback disrupted by a knee complaint.

Since recovering from that setback, Fisiiahi has scored four tries in three winning appearances for the club’s table-topping New South Wales Cup side to earn his recall.

In 28 NRL matches since his debut in 2011, Fisiiahi has scored 15 tries and had seven in the first five

rounds of the 2014 season before his campaign ended.

He comes onto the right wing for Tuimoala Lolohea, who moves into the centres for the injured David Fusitu’a (knee) while Konrad Hurrell was out of contention after picking up a one-match suspension for a dangerous contact offence when he returned from injury in Saturday’s 24-22 New South Wales Cup win over Illawarra.

Also not considered were veter-

ans Manu Vatuvei (shoulder) and Ryan Hoffman (calf); Vatuvei is expected to return for the round 22 match against the Dragons in Wellington on August 8 while it’s hoped Hoffman will be available to face the Sharks at Mt Smart Stadium in round 21 next week.

Do right by your children A STORY I worked on earlier this week has got me thinking.

It was one about the Christchurch Red under-8 rugby team, whose parents made a statement last weekend, by dressing up as superheroes while they watched on from the sideline. It ran in The Star on Wednesday.

The idea was that if kids are supposed to be playing the game for fun, which they are, then why shouldn’t the parents have fun too – a simple way to reinforce the right reasons for playing and watching kids sport.

It’s a problem that I don’t recall encountering much as a kid, when I played cricket in the summer and hockey in the winter.

There was probably the odd incident here and there, but nothing overly dramatic, and definitely nothing like the brawl in Auckland last month, at a high school

Lincoln Uni’s big chance

By Andrew Voerman SUNDAY’S CLUB rugby final is Lincoln University’s to lose.

That’s how the coaches see it, at least, with Christchurch’s Daniel O’Brien happily accepting the underdog tag, and the numbers certainly stacking up in Lincoln Uni’s favour.

They’ve won 16 games to 10; scored 659 points to 440; conceded only 268 compared to 380; and have a points differential of 391, more than six times larger than Christchurch’s 60.

But the thing with finals is that the form book tends to be thrown out the window, and tight encounters tend to be the order of the day.

That was certainly the case last weekend, as Lincoln Uni edged New Brighton, 17-14, and 14-man Christchurch held off Marist Albion 24-22, in the two semi-finals, setting up Sunday’s encounter at Rugby Park, which will kick off at 3pm.

For Lincoln Uni, Sunday’s game looms as the culmination – for now – of the past three years, a period in which their record reads: Played 51, won 42, lost eight.

They’re unbeaten this season – a 28-all draw with Marist Albion in May was their only blemish – which means they haven’t lost since July last year, when HSOB bundled them out in the semi-finals, the same fate that befell them in 2013.

They finally overcame that hurdle last week, but kept their celebrations rather subdued, making sure to keep their focus on the task at hand, said coach John Haggart.

“We know we’ve got a good side, and we should be in the final.

We’re confident that we deserve to be there, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.

“We’re just trying to keep our heads on our shoulders and not celebrate too wildly about mak-

A n d r e w Vo e r m a n rugby game, which has become this winter’s poster-child, held up as the latest piece of evidence that our sidelines have become a breeding ground for bad behaviour.

On one hand, the incidents that really get blown up in the media, the ones that involve the worst levels of abuse and assault, take place at a handful of games out of the thousands upon thousands each year.

But on the other, everyone you talk to, whether they’re involved in rugby, or in league, or in hock-

ey, or in netball, or in basketball, or cricket, will have a story to tell you; about the time they saw a parent overstep their bounds, and tell someone else’s kid off, or belittle their own kid, or grab them, or any of the litany of possible offences.

You might think that some of those sound incredibly minor, and in isolation, that’s probably a fair call, but built up over time, as parents step in, over and over again, and kids bear the brunt of it, over and over again, it’s a problem.

Go along on a Saturday morn-

ing, to Hagley Park, or one of the numerous others around the city, and you’ll see it – I have, and I did.

Again, nothing worth pulling up, and nothing that’s going to make the 6pm news on Sunday, or be splashed across page one on Monday, but enough to suggest we’re not doing right by the kids.

It’s a real shame, which is why I was pleased to see these parents dressing up and making their point last weekend.

If it makes others stop and t­­­­­­­hink and take notice of what’s going on, then it was worth it.

Round one rematches in league semi-finals

By Andrew Voerman WHEN THE Riccarton Knights played the Hornby Panthers in round one of this year’s club league competition, they were ill-prepared and underdone, says coach Chris Hansen.

Coming up against a Hornby side that had thrashed Halswell the week before, in a game brought forward to celebrate the Panthers’ centenary, they were never in it.

Now, three months later, the two teams are set to meet in tomorrow’s minor semi-final, where the winner will stay alive in the hunt for the Pat Smith Challenge Trophy, while for the loser, the season will be over.

Hansen said the team had come a long away since that opening loss, having bonded well and formed a brotherhood, and there was nothing in it when the sides met for the second time in early June, a game Hornby won 19-16.

The game will be played on neutral territory at Halswell Domain, which Hansen thinks might be of benefit to his team, who have performed better this season when playing away from their Crosbie Park home.

At Crosbie they won three from seven, but on their travels they won five from seven, which was good enough to secure them a top four spot with two weeks to spare.

Hansen said it might be a mental thing, with the team playing with more freedom when on the road.

“They like to defend and play well at home. They might be putting pressure on themselves to be better at home, but when we’re away they haven’t got that . . . so they just play to the best of their abilities.”

In the second semi-final, round robin winners Papanui will play Linwood, looking to bounce back from last week’s loss, and secure direct passage to the final, a prize that will come with a week’s rest.
