The Gallery's 2023 program brings us closer than ever to our community and the creative talent in our region. And while the world spins for another year, we will marvel, season to season, at the power of storytelling that lies at the heart of great art. In 2023 we also hope to make you laugh, for humour is a consistent thread throughout this program.
An early highlight in 2023 is a powerful celebration of story and culture drawn from the Art Gallery of South Australia's collection. Kungka Ku ṉ pu (Strong Women), showcases major contemporary works by celebrated women artists from the A ṉ angu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands –cultural custodians of an oral tradition that epitomises the art of storytelling. In June we hand over our entire gallery to artists of the Hunter region as we explore the lengths of the mighty Hunter River from the Upper Hunter through to the Port of Newcastle and along its tributaries.
In August we crank things up with a project led by artists Ben Quilty and Karla Dickens. Look forward to gutsy paintings, royal inquisitions and kind hearted community generosity.
The humour continues in the beautifully wry observations of Noel McKenna in a major solo exhibition of this treasured artist. There is so much in this program for educators and this year we aim to create a space for teachers and students to get the most they can from this bumper program. In 2023 we open our doors every Monday to students only and will provide a special workshop space each week for senior art students to hang out, study and share ideas for major works.
Our Collection will continue to be viewed and highlighted in new ways and this year we are delighted to be collaborating with community through the Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles and the Maitland Society of Artists. We hope to see you all throughout the year in Maitland. There is much to enjoy throughout our 2023 program.

A RARE SENSIBILITY
VALERIE MARSHALL STRONG OLSEN
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to discover the work of artist Valerie Strong (1933-2011), who was a practicing artist and teacher for most of her life but seldom showed her work in public.
The 70 works in this exhibition, are chiefly from the collection of Valerie’s son and daughter, Sydney gallerist Tim Olsen and Louise Olsen, co-founder of Dinosaur Designs. Dating from 1959 to 2004, the works cross many mediums including oil and acrylic on board and canvas, watercolours, prints and drawings, including several life drawings from the NAS Collection.

Miniature installation artist Tinky has created a puntastic summer art trail especially for MRAG

Throughout her practice Tinky works with miniature figurines and vintage objects to create humorous and playful scenes of mismatched proportions.

YELLOW SUN, BLUE GUM
Yellow sun, blue gum is a meditation on the landscape and a close inspection of place. In this exhibition, the artist's immersion in Glenrock Reserve, reveals the paradox of plein air painting, the tension between painterly activity and sharp attention to surroundings and the peace and quietude of mindfulness. Both can be simple and complex, effortless and arduous. Yellow sun, blue gum provides a sanctuary and a yearning for quiet contemplation.

A LITTLE POTLUCK PARTY PAI TI KONG WITH THE GHOSTS (DOUBLE-HAPPINESS)
In Potluck Party Pai Ti Kong with the Ghosts, Jayanto draws inspiration from a family tradition experienced in everyday life – the ritual of offering food made by his mother. These ceramic food offerings were created whilst in conversation with family and
friends. Navigating personal racial attacks, gender identity, migration and familial narratives, these charged conversations are rendered as a moving still-life ceramic ‘soul foods’ and offered as everyday ritual.

MYTH MAKING
KATE ROHDE AND TROY EMERY
A Horsham Regional Art Gallery exhibition
The subjects of mythology have long provided artists with a rich source of inspiration for depiction and reinvention. For Myth Making, artists Kate Rohde and Troy Emery have sought inspiration directly from the land and ecology of the Wimmera and Grampians regions of Victoria. Returning to their studios they embarked on a journey of collaboration to create a new mythology of Western Victoria influenced by the traditions of European myth making and imbued with their own recognisable, whimsical, and at times dark, artistic practices.
