iew of Maitland from the riverbank (with apologies to Jan Vermeer and View of Delft) is an exhibition which has been developed at Maitland Regional Art Gallery for a

variety of reasons.

Last year, in the James Gleeson retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia, I came across Gleeson’s painting of Delft, with homage to Jan Vermeer. I had seen this painting earlier in a private collection, and felt that Gleeson had not only captured his vision of Delft but also created an amazingly surreal new image of Delft which was a unique painting in its own right and not merely an adjunct to another artist’s creation. On viewing the painting again at the National Gallery and, this time, amidst a large collection of other paintings by Gleeson, I also realised that one painting could express a sense of the whole oeuvre of one artist. This led me to wonder whether a number of paintings of the same image by different artists and gathered together as an exhibition could make a statement about the image, the artists, and their art practices? Last year, as well, there was a revival of interest in Vermeer and his art. This primarily came about because of the novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring, followed relatively quickly by the film with the same title. A small retrospective exhibition of the work of Vermeer in London and several reviews of acclaim also assisted to place the artist in the public view and in my mind’s eye. Finally, it also became evident to me that certain views from the northern bank of the Hunter River at Maitland, where I live, evoke a similar feeling to the one painted by Vermeer at Delft, more than 300 years earlier. Like Delft, which had suffered a calamitous disaster, “the thunderclap”, a major fire which destroyed much of the city prior to its painting by Vermeer, Maitland has also been traumatised by many floods, the last some fifty years ago, again, ruining much of the original city. Out of these thoughts a project emerged. Twelve artists, all committed primarily to figurative elements, were selected and invited to visit Maitland and paint the City as viewed from the riverbank. The artists were encouraged to capture and deploy some of the elements they observed in the Vermeer painting. They were only able to look at a copy of the Vermeer painting of Delft and, with this in mind and viewing the city, they were to paint Maitland. This was not a simple exercise in copying or mimicking another artist’s painting. It was a commission for a group of artists to paint the City of Maitland as seen from the riverbank, employing their individual skills, perspectives and styles to create new paintings that could be hung in a group exhibition. Each artist was given a canvas of the same size as the one employed by Vermeer when he used his camera obscura method. The artists were then invited to Maitland to spend time at the riverbank to craft their paintings either in preparation or in a completed form ready for the exhibition. As the artists are all primarily studio based, asking them to paint, by and large ‘en plein air’, in itself offered a challenge and promised that the final works of art would make for a memorable exhibition.


The artists came to Maitland over two weekends, and spent time painting at the riverbank. Members of the public were invited to wander amongst the artists and look at what they were doing. Some of the artists commenced their work rather quickly, while others took their time and began to do early drawings and get a sense of the place. None of the artists complained, and it was a rather wondrous sight to see canvases, oils, acrylics and other artist’s paraphernalia scattered on the riverbank. I am not sure what Vermeer had experienced while he was painting at Delft and whether people were mingling on the riverbank as he was working. Here at Maitland there was a cacophony of people and much liveliness, which created a memorable experience for both those painting and those watching. I would like to believe that, for all those involved in the exercise of painting at the riverbank, the one off experience was challenging and enjoyable. Perhaps it will never be repeated again, and maybe it was an exercise in creativity. In either case it culminated in this exhibition, View of Maitland from the riverbank (with apologies to Jan Vermeer and View of Delft), accompanied by this catalogue. This catalogue is both a record and a memento of the exhibition. It records the exhibition and will therefore remain a memento for those who did and those who did not experience the time at the riverbank or indeed view the twelve paintings. Most importantly, the catalogue enables the newly established Maitland Regional Art Gallery to allow the public to enjoy twelve leading contemporary Australian artists. The exhibition and the catalogue provide an opportunity to record, both in paint and in print, Maitland at a time when it is growing, developing and taking a real interest in cultural pursuits and the visual arts in particular. Suzanne Archer Born Guildford, Surrey, England. Studied Sutton School of Art, England (1962-64). Arrived in Australia 1965. Joe Frost Joe Frost was born in Sydney in 1974. Primarily a landscape painter to date, his work is a summary of the places and sights of his everyday life. Frost works between observation and memory, and his vision is founded equally on the common look of things and their special appeal to his aesthetic sense. Frost studied at the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts, gaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.1) in 1995 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2001. He teaches at the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts and the National Art School. He was awarded the Young Artists’ Painting Prize at Berrima Art Society in 1997, an Australian Postgraduate Award in 1999 and a Residency at the Cite Internationale Des Arts, Paris in 2001. Emma Lohmann Born in Maryborough Queensland in 1970, Emma attended Maryborough State High School where she developed an interest in art, and in particular, painting. She attended the National Art School, Sydney from 1988-1990 and attained a Diploma in Arts (Fine Art). In 1990 she won the Goulburn City Council Art Prize for painting and in 1992 she was awarded the Waverley Art Prize. During that year she was included in the group exhibition “Small Works-Wide Visions” at Downlands College in Toowoomba, QLD. In 1993 she held her first solo exhibition at Legge Gallery, Sydney, which was the start of a long and fruitful association: this year she will have her 12th solo exhibition there. During 1994 Emma was fortunate enough to be awarded the Moya Dyring Memorial Studio from the Art Gallery of NSW. This provides the recipient with a three month studio in Paris, France. Whilst in Europe she was able to visit many major art museums such as the Louvre and Pompidou in Paris and the National and Tate in London. Also during 1994 her work was included in an exhibition of up and coming artists called “Fresh Art” at the SH Ervin Gallery, Sydney, curated by Ann Loxley and Felicity Fenner. In 2001 Emma returned to Paris for a two month residency at the Cité Internationale Des Arts and exhibited in the summer group exhibition at the Cité. As in 1994 she was able to produce a body of work which she subsequently exhibited at Legge Gallery in an exhibition titled “Images from Abroad and at Home”. Claire Martin

Claire Martin grew up living on air force bases all around Australia, returning frequently to the outer Melbourne suburbs where she was born. Ten schools in five states, hers was a life on the move, enjoyed on the fringe of towns and semi rural districts. She graduated from National Art School in 1974 Newcastle. Living and exhibiting in Newcastle, Sydney and Goulburn between 1980 and 1990. Returning to live in Newcastle in 1990, and with three other artists, she formed the experimental art co-operative ‘the pakhunters’, staging anonymous art ‘events’ and exhibiting regularly in innovative spaces around Newcastle. Receiving an enthusiastic public reception and reviews the Newcastle Region Art Gallery invited the group to exhibit in 1992. Her solo work evolved into the playful and ironic domestic collages (encaustic coated knits and chenille) shown in Sydney at The Tin Sheds in 1994. Elements of realism emerged in large encaustic wax paintings employing singular images within the abstract ground; a chair, fish, magpie, various everyday images acting as visual triggers to memory and experience. A shift to urban realism started with a series of pastel drawings observing the winter light on quiet suburban streets, exhibited in a solo show at Maude Space Glebe 1997. The view point turning from the urban interior life to the quiet streets outside. Invited to exhibit by Newcastle Region Art Gallery 1999 and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery in 2001. She has had regular solo and group shows in Newcastle and Sydney. Represented by Nick Mitzevitch Gallery in Newcastle until he left to become director of NRG 2002, and Brian Moore Gallery in Sydney until 2005. She is represented in private and regional gallery collections throughout Australia. Alexander McKenzie

Alexander McKenzie born Sydney 1971, studies include City Art Institute (COFA), Julian Ashton Art School and the Charlie Sheard Studio School Sydney. Alexander received the inaugural Brett Whitely Scholarship to the Julian Ashton Art School in 1993 and the Breraton prize for draughtsmanship from the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1994. He travelled widely from 1995 onward living, painting and studying in London, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy and Spain. Currently teaching at the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery School in southern Sydney Alexander’s work has been exhibited widely in Australia, the UK and the US. Collections include The Royal Bank of Scotland, Macquarie Bank Australia, the Park Hyatt Melbourne and private collections in London, Scotland, Hong Kong, Miami, Dublin, Sydney and Melbourne. Alexander McKenzie employs traditional and archival techniques in his work; his nature is allegorical allowing the intrusion of human occupation into the landscape to hint at the narrative. Peter Pinson After winning the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship in 1968, he travelled to Europe where he worked in the Sydney University studio in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. This was the first of many Artist-in-Residencies he has received, including two others at the Cité. In London, he studied Zen at the Buddhist Society with Christmas Humphries, and undertook a research Masters Degree in General Studies at the Royal College of Art. He subsequently completed a PhD at Wollongong University. In 1986, Peter Pinson was appointed ‘Official Military Artist, Australian Defence Forces’ - the first such Australian appointment in peace time. His career in art education included a period as Chief Education Officer at the National Gallery of Victoria 1974-77. After his retirement in 2004 as Professor at the College of Fine Arts, the University of New South Wales appointed him Emeritus Professor. Peter Pinson has undertaken a number of curatorial projects including the Elwyn Lynn Retrospective Exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and survey exhibitions of the late work of John Passmore and of Sydney Abstract Expressionism, both at the Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Sydney. He has written widely, including Craftsman House monographs on Rodney Milgate, Emanuel Raft and Elwyn Lynn. He has been a Member of the Australian Watercolour Institute since 1983, and President 2003-06. Leo Robba

Born in Brisbane in 1962, Leo Robba is an artist whose landscapes, both urban and rural, explore a sense of place. Robba’s paintings objectify and create a sense of nobleness that belongs to a long tradition. This nobleness is not built on some grand notion but the daily lives of the wonderfully ordinary and our tentative relationship to nature. Judith Ryrie Even though Judith is Sydney based, her long time interest in rural Australia has its roots from her birth in Dubbo. Judith continues to have a passion for rural Australia, particularly the Monaro. Taught by Roland Wakelin on leaving school, Judith’s focus on the graphic side of art led her to Sydney College of the Arts, where she graduated after four years with a Bachelor of Arts, Visual Commuication Degree, majoring in Graphic Design. Prior to this Judith had studied for three years at East Sydney Technical College in Art. Judith worked in graphics for a while with clients such as the Sydney Opera House and Musica Viva but now is a full-time artist. Judith exhibits at Artarmon Galleries in Sydney. She first exhibited with Artarmon Galleries in 2000, “Thirty Artists Past and Present”, then in 2002 in an “Exhibition for three artists” and this was followed by a joint exhibition in 2004. Most recently, in September 2005, she exhibited at Artarmon Galleries in “Land: 4 Visions” and her work was hung in 2005 Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize at Campbelltown. Her style is graphic rural realism and her medium is oil.

John R Walker Born in Sydney and now a Braidwood resident, John R Walker, a four times Archibald finalist, is a professionally practising artist who has exhibited regularly for more than 25 years, both nationally and internationally. Utopia Art Sydney has represented his work since 1989 and he has had a number of solo exhibitions in the USA. Over the past eight years, Walker’s work has increasingly focused upon painting signs for the experience of walking in the landscape. Judith White

Judith White was born in Sydney, trained at the National Art School, gained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Sydney University’s New England campus, and is a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute. Judith has been a practising professional for 30 years with 34 solo exhibitions in the eastern capital cities of Australia, and in Nagoya, Japan in 1993. Major commissions include, the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, Walker Corporation, Southern Pacific Petroleum/Central Pacific Mineral P.L, JLW Sydney, Attorney General’s Department of NSW, and in 2004 Judith was commissioned to complete a major work for the refurbished Hilton Hotel, Sydney. Judith has won over a dozen major awards including the Mosman Art Prize twice, the Margaret Fesq Memorial Art Prize twice, the Manly Daily Art Prize, the Maitland Art Prize and in 2004 the Fleurieu Peninsula McLaren Vale Prize. recent solo exhibitions 2006 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000
