Dear friends and art admirers, This year, the MakeDox Festival for Creative Documentary Film begins its second decade of life in the sphere of culture in the Republic of North Macedonia. As by now, in this eleventh festival edition we will put all our efforts into bringing as much rich and high- quality film program as possible, especially at this time when we believe that the offer of cultural contents are

Greetings

exquisitely significant for the mental health and spiritual development of people. Therefore, this year, MakeDox has decided to determinedly stand on the side of life while carrying on with celebrating creativity, above all in documentary film, and creating conditions and possibilities for this pursuit in the real as well as the virtual space of Kurshumli An. Unfortunately, this year, the physical space for film screenings and travelling is limited, however, we have still decided not to give up and accept the challenge that this pandemic has placed in front of us. So while working in silence and with dedication in our cultural realm, one that though necessary in these moments of crisis, is yet most severely affected, we tried to provide new spheres for film journeys and break through new spaces where, through the MakeDox film program, we can hang out, discuss, debate and enjoy together. This way, we can all participate in the process of spiritual recovery and exchange of support during these times. We believe that this way we can return culture, which is now placed behind the curtains of social life, to the right place in our lives, feeling that it is something that is essentially necessary especially during these hard moments of fear, sadness and insecurity. We are highly aware that the Macedonian audience, just like any person anywhere, feels the need for social touch which is one of the main reasons for organizing festivals and participating in a common ritual of film watching on a big screen, that is, celebrating creativity together. Nevertheless, the digital form of the festival allows us to open new possibilities for different and rather far-reaching implications of the festival and documentary films on all of our citizens. Namely, while going through a situation of health crisis and preparing a festival in quarantine, we have been feeling the moments of silence around ourselves and our city, some of us even experiencing police curfew for the very first time. Spontaneously, these experiences have enlightened a spark from deep within us, the poem “In Silence” by our dear poet Aco Shopov, which has inspired us to delve on and listen to the hardest and most simple of things, facing the invisible with hope that it will open new gates to worlds and spheres that are yet undiscovered. For these reasons, the 11th edition of MakeDox is dedicated to sound and silence, the look beyond things visible and will be held under the motto “Merge with Silence!” 4

In Silence If you carry within you things unsaid, things that thrust through and bite bury them in deep silence, silence shall bring them to light. Aco Ĺ opov, Merge with Silence 1955

When the Sky Is Not a Limit

The end of the second decade of the new millennium marks the beginning of the second decade of life for MakeDox, bringing along the hope that it will continue to be exciting and full of versatile authentic film stories that talk about people, events, times - present, future, past… Times in a time of tempest or if I may, tempest in times that face and witness abundance of occurrence through the creative force of the authors… the state of human spirit and the challenges that They, the Human, encounter… Here I note - in the epicenter of historical events, love, social turmoil and conflicts, ambition, raw capitalism and excessive consumerism, joy, incurable diseases and death, wars, exodus and genocide, justice, (un)natural disasters, silence... Therefore, this year MakeDox decided to dedicate the Country in Focus Program to The Netherlands, a country with a rich history of documentary film that appreciates this cinematic form in a special way. This approach is clearly visible in the program sections of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, today’sbiggest and most popular festival for documentary films in the world. Every year, we get the chance to indulge into the creativeness and the inventive visual narration of the respective authors that almost never fail to move something that lies deep within us, inspire us to contemplate or let out a scream or a laugh but always keep us awake… For this reason, for this year’s 11th edition of MakeDox, unfortunately in conditions of health and financial crisis, we have selected a dozen Dutch documentaries that have woke us up and encouraged us to share them as soon as possible with others, with our dear audience which we believe that like us, in this time of tempest gets more hungry with each day for culture, true values and does not shy away from facing society, nature and ultimately itself. Why “The Sky is Not a Limit”? Very simple- Dutch documentary filmmakers don’t cover only topics from the “Nether (low- lying) land (region)”. On the contrary, this country discovers its film “gems” throughout the entire world as nomads on a quest for hidden treasure. With an exquisite documentary sensibility, in which the visual landscape contributes the audio (music, soundscapes, speech, silence) and vice versa in an incredibly functional way, these authors have created and keep on creating one of the most significant documentary film opuses for human civilization. The films that take part in our program confirm this notion. The film "They Call Me Babu" by the director Sandra Berends, through the story of Alima, an Indonesian woman who works as a nanny in a Dutch family, deals with the past, i.e. the time of colonialism in Indonesia. With the help of carefully selected archival material, the film takes us through the history of the now independent Republic of Indonesia, which after 350 years of Dutch colonialism and Japanese occupation during World War II, managed to fight for its independence. In Dutch, 'babu' literally means 'lack of a mother', as Alima herself explains the word in her own way. The director John Appel in his latest documentary "Once the Dust Settles" takes us to three geographical locations on our

planet Earth: Amatrice, Chernobyl and Aleppo, places that have experienced severe (un) natural disasters. Today, unfortunately, it can be freely said that they are symbols and may be considered as natural warnings about how we should treat nature, natural resources, the historical and cultural heritage if we still intend to live and survive on this planet. The theme in “Punks” is increasingly present in rich and highly developed societies. Why? The director Masya Oms goes to a small French village and through a direct and honest film narrative she introduces us to a group of young boys, delinquents, who are temporarily staying on a remote rural farm in France. Working there together and facing themselves, their parents and the environment, with the help of a counselor, they hope to be able to regain their lives in their own hands. From a small village farm, we continue our Dutch documentary tour on a luxury voyage, a boat cruise with Baron Ronald Bush Reisinger of Innerin. In “The King of the Cruise”, the director Sophie Dross subtly explores the human need for constant affirmation of their greatness and recognition, even though this was given to the baron at birth. Yet Baron Ronald Bush Reisinger of Innerin, telling his extravagant life stories about his decadent vacations on the most expensive cruisers, wholeheartedly opens his soul to the average viewer so they can see the other side of the coin and the difficulties which a baron faces while living immersed in conformism and wealth.

And so, while I sat enveloped in silence, writing the text for this Country in Focus: Netherlands Program that features an abundance of colorful tulips and ‘greenery’, dark alleys with red lanterns and clogs that can be heard from afar, light engraved in a wide array of paintings from the world’s most renowned master painters, a breakdown of silence happened. A Facebook notification that says that Dutch were also great inventors who used juniper berries to prepare and therefore, invent homemade gin. So, let’s raise our glasses high and give a toast to this marvelous “Nether Land” with gigantic documentary film heritage and a great admirer of documentary film. And a toast to good health! May it return all around the world, so we can be safe and sound while watching the films of the Country in focus Program in silence, whose authors have prepared for us like a majestic gin cocktail produced and prepared by the Netherlands. Here’s to health! Here’s to us! May documentaries live long and prosper… Petrula Veljanovska

"Little Man, Time and the Troubadour" by Ineke Smith introduces us to a different atmosphere ... An atmosphere of war survivors, lost home, grief and pain of the little man in his homeland and neverending hope for better times. The film follows the fate of Abkhazianborn troubadour Sipa Labakua, who was forced to flee to Moscow with his family in the 1990s when the Soviet Union collapses and the war in Abkhazia begins. He tells his autobiographical story along the way, in his puppet show in post-war Abkhazia, and poetically raises the most bitter questions of our civilization: What is a home? "Together" by director Carmen Cobos is a personal drama in which the director, in an authentic way, recounts her painful confrontation with the time when her longtime partner and producer was diagnosed with a terminal disease. In the film, she amazes us with her courageous openness and vigorous camera surveillance of the whole process of sadness, anger and refusal to accept the situation, up to the moment when she comes to a state of reconciliation and acceptance of the disease as part of life. The film "The Last of the Mohicans" by the director Max Ploeg, which was part of the IDFA Student Program Competition, follows the life story of Tonywho, despite being stuck in debts, does not give up his desire to help the poor like her, driving her mobile grocery store all day long throughout the Dutch town of Tilburg. Following her commitment and patience to survive honestly and with much effort, in this time of dominant cruel capitalism, you cannot remain indifferent and resist a dose of optimism that justice will be served for the little man. The wealthy Baron Ronald Busch Reisinger is a striking and popular guest on a luxury cruise ship. He tells the most fantastic stories about his life to his fellow passengers, who hang on his every word, but sometimes have no idea what to make of this portly figure—or so it seems. Ronnie is apparently not only a Scottish baron, but also the king of a piece of land in Africa. Behind the facade of cruise luxury and decadence, however, there is a great deal of emptiness and loneliness.

The troubadour Sipa Labakhua travels to the land of his birth, Abkhazia, with his puppet theatre. The autobiographical, at times almost surrealist play he performs is based on the fate of his father, his hero. He was an idealistic politician who was forced by the war with Georgia to flee with his family to Moscow, where he couldn't find his niche. Now, his son has returned home. He shares his concerns with his audiences and meets local inhabitants. Driven by the questions "What makes a country? What is home?", he collects memories and reflections of a colourful community that includes nationalist Abkhazians, immigrants and artists.

Cuba is well known as a so-called time capsule. The very place where the New World was discovered has become both a romantic and a warning window into American and world history. Both the beauty and the decadence of the 50s have been preserved through economic embargoes and isolation. The island allows us a glimpse – bleak or optimistic – into the planet’s future: in the case of global energy scarcity, cultural or financial crisis, large parts of the world could face a similar kind of existence.Through encounters with (extra) ordinary people, the director takes us on a new journey, entering the thoughts and dreams of Cuban society in an era of transition and change, placing his characters at the center of a far bigger, planetary narrative.

Main Program

Max Richter’s landmark 8.5 hour work “Sleep” explores new ways for music and consciousness to interact, a “personal lullaby for a frenetic world…a manifesto for a slower pace of existence.”Centring around the open-air concert in Los Angeles, as well as footage from the sold-out performances in Berlin, New York and Paris, we are plunged deep into the artist’s life and process, transcending the work to explore his legacy. Personal reflections from Max Richter, and visual archive from his longterm creative partner Yulia Mahr help build this intimate and groundbreaking visual story which studies the universal experience of sleep that unites us all. This story is a rare expression of a global community, unified - both a meditative respite from and a protest against the rush and chaos of the modern world.

Even though China does not celebrate Christmas, there are over 600 Christmas decoration factories in Yiwu, China open all year round. There are no high-tech machines, just people from all across the country working really hard putting glitter on baubles, pom poms on Christmas hats and assembling Father Christmases. With rising wages, the workers in Christmas factories can now afford the newest iPhones, but they still live in crowded dormitories, work long factory hours and breathe in chemical fumes and glitter particles. The film portrays a place where communism and globalism intersect and transform one another. .

Young Peyangki lives and studies in a picturesque monastery deep in the mountains of Bhutan. A few years have passed since the king allowed TV and internet into the country, and now the structured daily rituals of candle lighting and recitation of prayers compete with the powerful lure of smart phones. Privately, Peyangki is passionate about love songs and falls in love on WeChat with a young singer from the city of Thimphu. Disinterested in study and often reprimanded by his masters, he sells medicinal mushrooms to make enough money to leave the monastery in search of “the one he dreams of night and day”. Will he succumb to romance and the temptations of the city or return to his pious life in the monastery?

People are hard at work extending the railroad in a remote Georgian mountain village. When they’re done, the new Silk Road Express will run through here. But before this high-speed connection between China and Europe can go anywhere, a tunnel has to be dug—a tunnel that goes right through a mountain where villagers have their fields and pastures. There are promises of prosperity and progress, but in the dreamy atmosphere of the fairy-tale village, the coming of the express train feels more like a nightmare as no one knows if the houses will have to be knocked down or not. Language and communication problems between the Georgian and Chinese workers lead to fierce arguments, and ultimately a tense strike. The gorgeous, disengaged shots perfectly reflect the surrealist atmosphere of a changing world order.

For two decades, the Enache family - nine kids and their parents - lived in a shack in the wilderness of Bucharest Delta: an abandoned water reservoir, one of the biggest urban natural reservations in the world, with lakes and hundreds of species of animals and rare plants. When the authorities decide to claim back this rare urban ecosystem, the Enache family is evicted and told to resettle in the city - a reality they know nothing about. Kids that used to spend their days in nature have to learn about city life, go to school instead of swimming in the lake, and swap their fishing rods for mobile phones. A heartbreaking and thoughtful study of gentrification, seen through the eyes of a family trying to adapt to the new life they never asked for.

Susanne Kovács knows that her paternal grandparents survived the Holocaust and fled to Denmark to begin a new life. That’s all she knows. The Hungarian couple kept their own story under lock and key throughout their lives and focused on immersing themselves into Danish everyday life as quickly as possible. All perfect, seen from outside. But the unsaid did not fade - it grew and finally began to darken the present. When, as a young woman, she decides to ask questions, she meets only rejection. May she dig up times against her grandmother’s will that are haunted by so many ghosts? Isn’t it better to remain silent after all this time? Who is allowed to speak and with whom? Which version of the truth is right? A courageous investigation of her own family story that makes it clear that at some point it’s no longer about guilt, but about forgiveness.

Conjuring reality and wonder, this film takes us to a seemingly different era, by exploring the world of Radio Belgrade. One of Europe’s oldest radio stations and a true institution of the city, the station still broadcasts original programming and helps keep history, culture and critical thought, as well as ever-relevant questions about ourselves and the world, from slipping out of memory and mind. Set at the intersection of an observational documentary and a unique sensory experience, the film documents the everyday scenes at the station - this unique cinematique landscape made of sounds, words, notes and echoes doubles as a love letter to radiophonic art and its disarming insight into what makes us remember, understand, think, discover, and feel.

The way we look is not always a personal choice, but it is often a matter of how we are supposed to look. Society likes to use boxes and labels. Ideally, a woman is slim and shaved; a man does not wax his legs. What role does our hair play in our lives, and why have we stopped loving it? This hybrid audiovisual essay with performative moments presents various perspectives on hair.

Between the 60s and the 70s hunger forced around 150.000 people to leave the South-East of Italy. In Gagliano there are those who chose to leave and those who stayed. In 1973 Nardo gave up his dream of becoming a filmmaker and opened the Bar 2000, which is still in the center of Gagliano. One of the regulars at the bar is Mimmi. He left very young and worked in the Gotthard Tunnel. The experience in the tunnel left him with the tragic memory of the death of a friend. This film is an intimate tale of the daily lives of long-time friends Nardo and Mimmi. It takes place on a summer day when present and past are interwoven through experience and memory.

While the first guests are waiting outside in the cold, the Opera House of Kyiv is slowly awaking. The Orchestra is rehearsing and the preparations in the cloakroom are ongoing. All of a sudden the people from the outside are flooding the corridors and halls of the Opera. People of all ages and classes join together on this evening to become a big homogeneous audience. The Longing Saudade

An outsider struggles through the wild nature of the Sierra Maestra. This is how director Otávio Almeida describes The Crossing himself. The harsh journey through the highest mountain range in Cuba leads over a vast lake. Nature becomes increasingly dominant in this stark, high-contrast black-and-white film, which unfolds without dialogue, but is supported by an expressive soundtrack filled with sounds of nature.

Director: Otávio Almeida

An old Brazilian legend says that ‘Saudade’ was created by the African gods so that the enslaved people won’t forget their beloved ones and where they come from. Triggered by the disease of her father, the afro-Brazilian director Denize Galiao explores her deepest feelings for her home and her roots which she does not want to lose after 20 years of living in Germany. The word ‘Saudade’ which cannot be translated into any other language is the red line through the story of a family that lives between two different cultures.

Sound Shapes Film, Film Shapes Sound — Workshop with Vladimir Rakić

The British “Sava”, the Macedonian “Ironman”, the Bulgarian “Voev: Greetings to the Gods”, the Slovenian “Metabolism” and the Swiss-Serbian “Dida” are the six documentary projects in different stages of production selected for this year’s sound workshop with Vladimir Rakić. Through a series of group and individual sessions held from the end of June until the end of August, the filmmakers, editors and/or sound designers of the selected film projects question and reflect on the role that sound and music play in the entire documentary filmmaking process - as well as on the role that the film plays in shaping the sound - so that they could use them more skillfully and enhance their film narration in a fresh way. The results will be presented during the last workshop session, at the MakeCoProDox Forum in August. The workshop is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands.

Less is More — Masterclass with John Appel

Less is more has been John Appel’s motto ever since he completed his film studies. Not surprisingly, it is also the title of his masterclass! This masterclass is about the art of storytelling. It is about dealing with all kinds of limitations, obstacles and mistakes in documentary filmmaking - and turning all these into advantage. About the power of restriction but also about the art of silence - creating silence in interviews and using silence in storytelling. All backed up by clips from his and from other people’s work.

Biography: “I make films based on a combination of thorough research and intuition. During my research I’m not just looking for facts, but above all for the vulnerability of people, which is what I call emotional research”, says John Appel who has directed more than 40 documentaries for cinema and TV and has been the cinematographer on numerous films. In 1987 he graduated from the Netherlands Film Academy with his documentary Radio Daniëlle, a portrait of a local pirate radio station which won the Best Student Film Award. In 1993 he made his first documentary for cinema Johnny Meijer - Body and Soul. In 1999, his film André Hazes - She Believes in Me not only opened IDFA but was also awarded with the IDFA Award for Best Feature Length Documentary and became the greatest documentary hit in Dutch cinema over the last 60 years. His filmography is comprised of award-winning titles - The Last Victory (2003), The Player (2009), Wrong Time, Wrong Place (2012), The Voice of Holland (2018) and Once the Dust Settles (2019) - which bring closer stories of ordinary people and lonely heroes, filled with daily life drama, melancholy, memories, death and consolation. He is mentoring filmmakers from the Middle East within the Close Up International Co-Production Training Program and is also a guest lecturer at the UBB University of Cluj, Romania.

MakeCoProDox Forum #2 Solidarity as a creative tool in times of crisis

In anticipation of an economic crisis, the cultural sector and the film industry are often most affected by budget cuts. Only by acting in solidarity and increasing regional co-productions can the Balkan countries increase the number of funded projects during the reduced funds. This year, the avid need for creating and consuming cultural content has, for the second time, inspired us to organize the CoProDox forum that will unite filmmakers and support the future creative work in the culture sector through solidarity and collaboration. MakeCoProDox Forum is a forum whose main goal is to develop a strategy plan to increase documentary film co-production between the Balkan countries. The Forum welcomes representatives from 12 regional film agencies, 3 Scandinavian film agencies and 10 projects in final stages of production. The first documentary film co-production forum took place within the 10th edition of the Creative Documentary Film Festival MakeDox. In the framework of the 11th edition of the MakeDox festival, we will welcome the key personalities of the documentary film industry from all over the world and will introduce the possible ways of 84

collaborations and try to make the funds in the region to collaborate on a longer time scale. Our objective with this project is to establish a new alliance sector in the Balkan region for the first time, as the only way to amortize the consequences of the crisis. Within the online sessions we will present the problems that regional countries are facing largely due to the crisis, and try to find possible ways of overcoming them, while emphasizing their not specific regulations dedicated to supporting the development and production of documentary films.

Doc-Talks Under the Fig Tree

The day is slowly going away and if the mind becomes silent for a moment, and takes the body along, you may hear the words of the song which the muezzin sings in a language indecipherable for many of us. But what does it say, really? To slow down, to let go, to lighten up our heavy steps while walking down the cobblestone alleys in the Old Turkish Bazaar in Skopje, rushing toward the An in order to escape the scorching August heatwave. Suddenly, a relief! Behind the massive stone walls a cool breeze embraces us, our thoughts become clear, water is flowing in the center… All is well. We hear the sound of children’s laughter and a distant echo of dogs barking. It’s just a few minutes before 6 p.m, so that means that it’s too early for screenings for it’s still daylight. However, it’s time to talk, to listen and then talk and listen a bit more... We are sitting in a circle. For a moment we become silent, all of us are here and we may begin. А summer scent is gently spreading in the air- black Turkish tea, wild figs and watermelon. The tiny metal spoon is making a swirl, melting away the sugar cube. Ching, ching, the spoon goes, announcing the beginning

of our discussion. We are talking about characters who live lonesome lives in the middle of mountains, ice deserts and oceans, then for some others who found luck midst unfortunate, next we turn toward the new forms of communication and technology, then we are listening about the craziness of going shooting when everyone tells you that you shouldn’t, then someone shares their aches and pains about the time when realizing that their entire recorded material had simply vanished, then we hear about the joy to see that all the nonsense finally made sense when revealed on the film screen… Dear dreamers, this year we will, once again, talk under the shadow of our fig tree. We are, just as you, aware that nothing can replace the daily festival discussions held live in the backyard of Kurshumli An. Having in mind this year’s state of emergency, we intend to proceed with these talks accompanied by filmmakers and anyone interested, yet in a different atmosphere but same level of enthusiasm and thirst for exchanging stories. May we live long and have stories to tell! МakeDox +

Debate on Sexual Abuse

Kristina Lelovac (Firstborn Girl) Speakers: Meri Cvetkovska (HERA) Kalia Dimitrova (Meduza)

(Caught in the Net- Vít Klusák, Barbora Chalupová)

The film "Caught in the Net" is a brutal, explicit encounter with the abuse and violence that lurk over female minors in cyberspace. With this debate, we will attempt to deconstruct online predators in our local context but also, once again, remind ourselves that introducing comprehensive sexual education in school curriculum is crucial for tackling any type of gender- based violence.

Kristina Lelovac is an actress and associate professor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Skopje. As an actress she performed in independent theatre productions and performances, film and television projects and has collaborated on interdisciplinary research art projects. At the moment she is working on her Ph.D. thesis in the field of Theatre Studies. A New Visual World with No Restrictions and Borders

Connecting and exchanging ideas and positive energy, as well as building collaborations, has always been a great challenge for people. Today, when the borders are closing while the virtual space opens new windows to connect with the world, and especially with children’s ever-lasting fresh perspective, people are looking for new forms of communication and inspiration to discover new spheres of cognition and creation.

We truly hope that we will satisfy their desire for new visual experiences but also keep their attention through our festival digital platform which is user- friendly not only for them but also for their parents and grandparents.

Therefore, this year - as any other before we won’t be leaving behind our youngest and dearest, those curious eyes eager to play and discover new worlds and we have prepared a Youth and Kids Program for the 11th MakeDox edition. With this program, children’s ideas, desires and dreams will travel smoothly from the Caucasus through the Balkans up to the Nordic countries. We have tried to create this new visual world with no restrictions and borders together with Icedocs Documentary Film Festival from Iceland, our old friends from CinéDOC Tbilisi Documentary Film Festival from Georgia and one of the most renowned International Animated Film Festival "Animateka" from Slovenia.

Exhibition

Beam of light through the lens, poetry of reality Collaboration between MakeDox and the Biology Institute - Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

We love wandering and dreaming, sure we do. Is there anything nicer to wish for ourselves while in this world? There are times when we can hardly grasp all that reality around us may offer colors, smells, sounds, flavors, textures, streams, laughter and cries, gaze, light, darkness, vastness, defiance, doom, serenity, warmth, cold. Whirlwind that thrust and never stops… We feel that our eyes are hungry, that the mind is restless and the body tireless. We wander and wonder what’s beyond all things visible, who speaks through these voices, what’s beneath the surface. And finally, what should we do with all this vigor? Some would say ‘I just take my camera and go shooting!’ Others grab their pen or brush (better said, lap top) and don’t leave their room for days, while some interpret the world through sounds and voices… And what about the curious scientists, those eager souls who observe and experiment with the fragments of reality? Those who with unreserved commitment translate this world in their laboratory premises, then leave us speechless, astonished, puzzled, horrified but almost always saved. What a joy to have science! When one is scientifically literate, one sees the world through a different prism, delving into the layers of the great story. The story of humanity is a story of ideas, beams of light that break through darkness. One such story is this year’s collaboration of MakeDox and the Institute of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje which have jointly created the visual

identity of the 11th festival edition. By presenting microscopic images of the onion and its inside, our creative collaborators introduced us to their fantastic and for us barely familiar world and reminded us, once again, why the onion is the symbol of our documentary story. We started talking about the lens - a tiny piece of glass that revolutionized civilization in the 17th century with the then newly invented optical instruments and changed the world(view) and knowledge entirely. We are glad that we can share this admiration though it seems like we’re standing on opposite sides when it comes to professional interests and profiles. The light through our film lens captures the images of life in front of us, exposes a new layer above and beyond existing layers - another story to tell. The beams through the microscopic lens penetrate further, disperse the clouds above things visible, the thought of human mind’s splendor moves you, its age-old tendency to enlighten other, unknown dimensions. The talk on the lens stops but once we get back to our office in the Old Bazaar, we continue discussing and then look for the definition in a dictionary. So it goes - lens, a transparent body enclosed by smooth spherical surfaces or one spherical and the other flat. Lens, a transparent body through which light is refracted. Light, may it fade away so that we could dream more. What a joy to have science, what a joy to have film!

Night Stories

The docu-nights at MakeDox prove that where words fail, music speaks… When the day is done, after hours of working, indulging into film screenings, or maybe digesting personal stories, we stop for a moment to rest and feel that the An is also taking a breath. Then, the film canvas turns black, so our menu offers a hot spot that links directly to emotions - we dwell upon them, feed their inside, share them or let them go wild… It’s time for our version of Scheherazade and 1001 Nights, our bedtime stories. While the guitar, the oud, the kemane and the accordion echo around, one should just carefully listen, and they will hear all the stories that were once told in the dark nooks of this place - all the adventures, misfortunes, boastful lyrics of personal praises and hard fates. And all those who played here prompted by joy, delight, grief or for the sake of shelter or bread. See you at night, in the stories…

MakeDox Traveling Cinema

Those who can dream and imagine are always on the road, traveling. Just so, this year, we never doubted, not even for a moment, whether traveling is or is not a good idea during a pandemic. Of course it is! Do we need anything more than a cosy spot, a white wall or stretched canvas, a projector and a film? Plus, that’s something we can do anywhere - in the living room, in front of our building, on rooftops or terraces, in the small nearby towns or villages, in grandma and grandpa’s backyard... Let MakeDox and its creative documentary stories take you anywhere you want. Stay there as long as you feel like it and don’t think about returning until that day comes. Maybe we’ll carry on down the road, maybe we’ll stop if something captures us, maybe we’ll even find that very thing that was missing in our story this year... Most importantly, we take our time and go kindly. Our traveling caravan and the donkey are always near us, ready to start a new journey. May our dreams never stop, may the road unravel on! 92

FestDocs Network

It is a perfect moment in history to start new collaborations with already acclaimed European festivals from Germany, France, Spain. Festivals are meant to be celebrations of life and a meeting place for creativity, a market where opinions and ideas are exchanged and where collaborations come to life. Festivals are necessary for filmmakers to meet their audience, to celebrate films. Since documentaries usually take a long time before they reach their viewers, festivals acknowledge the filmmaker’s achievement and mark an important moment in the film completion process. This is why it is important to establish strong festival bonds and even more in times of social crisis. Now it is time to strengthen the ties, help each other with advice and thus support the art of filmmaking. At the moment, one such network is the Fest Docs Network which helps us to make the best of the online festival edition to take advantage of the new online reality. Moreover, it gives us the opportunity to engage

documentary filmmakers from faraway places to understand the differences of the European realities. Fest Docs Network started spontaneously between the German Doc.fest Munchen, the French FIPADOC from Biariz, the Spanish DocsBarcelona and MakeDox which decided to join their creative forces and different festival experiences so as to bring to the screen films from France, Spain, Germany and the Balkans, France, Spain and Germany before audiences that don’t have the opportunity to see realities from these countries. Which is why we will organize screenings locally but will also cross borders to reach the audiences from rural and other urban areas. This collaboration strengthens our festival markets and seeks possibilities for co-production of documentary films. We’ll therefore involve all three festivals in the CoProDox Forum pitching session and will discuss our future plans as a network, exchanging films from all the countries and attending each other’s festivals being one of the next logical steps. MakeDox in Classroom introduced the documentary film into formal education. With the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), we have published two toolkits consisting of 19 creative documentary films for high school teachers in Macedonia. Today, this program is implemented by 140 trained Sociology and Civic Education teachers in 80 high schools throughout Macedonia, reaching at least 30,000 students every year since 2013! We are Visual! Education and Audio-Visualization of Human Rights (WAVE) is a twovolume story. In the first volume we were looking for ways to bring closer documentary stories to teachers and students aged 12-16. Supported by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), we have published a set of 12 documentary films and a handbook for their use within the formal and informal education. Last year we closed the second volume: training of 139 educators and NGO representatives who implement this program in 56 cities and villages across the country. We reached the end of this story in December 2017 when we organized the international conference “Audiovisual Education – future or present” which gathered around one hundred of participants from Macedonia and abroad, including 80 teachers and students, eager to share their experiences and talk about the need of introducing audiovisual content in today’s education system. Youth Film Clubs is a story we began telling together with the Youth Educational Forum. The media clubs in Skopje, Bitola, Resen, Debar, Gevgelija, Kumanovo, Veles, Kichevo, Negotino, Struga, Tetovo and Kratovo were the first to host small temporary cinemas and vast discussion forums. Nowadays, young people’s horizons widen and strong opinions soften as a chopped onion in a heated pan in a few more youth associations and organizations in Macedonia.

ACTive is a regional creative documentary film school open to the young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia. This fantastic story that we’ve told twice so far, together with “Pravo Ljudski” from Bosnia and Herzegovina and “DokuFest” from Kosovo, inspired 11 short doc stories, signed by 30 ACTive participants. Last year, we planted the DocuSprouts seeds for the third time. DocuSprouts is a project aiming to provide education and film literacy to young people, namely high school students aged 15-19 years. It seeks to offer a program - in an informal way, outside of the schools - to young people through which they will not only get acquainted with the basic stages of documentary filmmaking but also get hands-on experience. Driven by the idea of active youth participation in the creation of new cultural values, DocuSprouts recognizes and brings together the weak points in terms of culture availability among young people allowing for new cultural initiatives to emerge. Over the four sessions that take place during MakeDox Traveling Cinema, the film festival and during the autumn and winter months, the future young filmmakers acquire knowledge and develop skills in the field of documentary filmmaking mentored by MakeDox creative team members and acknowledged docuprofessionals from abroad. So far, three short documentaries have been produced by young people for young people, conveying their messages to a wider audience and at the same time motivating the young audience to proactively contribute to the development of the cultural scene. So far, through MakeDox in Cinema, we have shared 75 exceptional documentary stories with nearly 15,000 primary school pupils in Skopje.

COFFEE AND ONION We often stretch our film canvas at the most unexpected places - in the middle of a meadow, in a library, at a playground and sometimes even in some old or new cinema, garden or backyard. Last year, we launched a collaboration with the multimedia venue “Film and Coffee Kotur”, whose menu also offers “Coffee and Onion”. So far, we have screened 10 documentary films but we are looking forward to seeing you at many more screenings and “Coffee and Onion” hang outs soon.
