Fitness 101 By: Paul Bodenbach MA., FAFS,FMR,GPS Competitorsedge@msn.com (859) 802-2235 Last month in Fitness 101 I discussed a very effective method to stretch the quadriceps muscle group in the front of the thigh. However, there may be times flexibility exercises need assistance to be effective. When muscles get overworked they sustain micro tears. Those tears emit chemicals that can create adhesions which make the muscle fibers stick together. In some cases those adhesions need to be broken down so the muscle fibers can slide normally allowing the muscle to stretch. Massage is the traditional method to breaking down of adhesions. It also enhances blood flow which delivers nutrients for muscle healing while eliminating waist products from muscle breakdown. It would be great to have a massage therapist available each time one finished with their activity. Unfortunately, that’s not a realistic possibility. However, the introduction of vibration massagers a few years ago has made this process much more available. Studies have shown they enhance blood flow creating similar benefits to traditional massage. They’re also attributed to a reduction in recovery time and delayed onset muscle soreness that usually comes 24 – 48 hours after a workout. I use a Theragun therapeutically for my clients on a daily basis with great success.

for reservations contact peg peskin at ppeskin @ maketewah . com

Vibration massagers are easy to use. Just turn it on and apply it to the muscle that you want to loosen. It’s quick and easy. So is buying one. They’re sold in the pro shop. They make a great Christmas gift that everyone could benefit from.

Dear Maketewah Members, I hope that everyone had a truly wonderful and memorable Thanksgiving! The weather has definitely welcomed winter and with that, be on the lookout for emails from Dave and Ted regarding any frost delays, driving range openings, etc. as we progress into even colder weather. I am sure that many of you have seen construction begin on our practice center addition as well as the new paddle ball court. This is very exciting as it is the beginning to many exciting changes! In January, we start on the interior of the clubhouse. Keep in mind that the clubhouse will be closed, however we will have to-go food service set up and new menus coming your way. This is a great way to pick up dinner on the way home and minimize your time out in the cold.. as well to keep your family thinking that you slaved over the stove all day (secret is always safe with us). Speaking of menus, Chef Brandon has a fantastic menu coming out that will be in place for the last 3 weeks of December. Baked Brie for the win (is it obvious that this is one of my favorites?) as well as a number of other items to compliment the holiday sprit this month. Keep an eye out for the new menu! Finally, we have many events planned for you to take part in this month! Make sure to keep an eye on your emails and the website for all event information. All event registrations can be made by emailing Peg at ppeskin@maketewah.com. I wish everyone a magical and warm holiday and look forward to seeing you around the club! Warm Regards, Melissa Paule
