“As a golfer who grew up in Cincinnati and has been a PGA Member for 23 years, I wholeheartedly endorse this golf book. Gerry takes you on a journey through the history of golf in Cincinnati that you have never experienced before. This is a must read for anybody who loves the game of golf”. Dave Bahr, Golf Professional and eleven-time Qualifier for Professional and Senior Professional National Champion ships; winner of 2018 Horton Smith Award from SOPGA “Gerry Lanham is to be thanked for exploring and discovering much of the forgotten or incorrect history of the early years of Cincinnati golf.” James Cissell Rules Official at over 100 USGA Championships and 40 NCAA Championship “As a lifelong resident of Cincinnati and lover of the game of golf it never occurred to me how limited our knowledge is of the history of Golf in Cincinnati until reading Gerry’s book. His detailed, informative, historical account of golf’s history in Cincinnati is a must read not just for golfers in Cincinnati but all golfers.” -Robert Gerwin II Two-time Champion of Men’s Met and Ohio Amateur; Member of the Ohio Golf Association Hall of Fame

Fitness 101 By: Paul Bodenbach MA., FAFS, FMR, GPS Competitorsedge@msn.com (859) 802-2235 Have you ever had a quick sharp pain in your knee? It’s most common while walking up or down stairs or hills. It can be debilitating for short periods of time. These episodes may increase in frequency and intensity creating longer periods of pain and discomfort which can escalate to greater problems at the knee. In many instances this pain can be caused by increased pressure behind the kneecap (patella). The four muscles (quadriceps) of the front of the thigh come together just above the knee and form the patellar tendon. The tendon includes the patella and is attached on the tibia bone below the knee. To straighten the knee the quadriceps muscles contract pushing the patella against the femur pulling the tibia forward and extending the knee. Over time the quadricep muscles can become tight and shortened. This can lead to increased pressure between the patella and the femur which can cause pain. In many instances a simple stretch will reduce the pressure and relieve this pain. Below are two examples of quadriceps stretches to reduce that pressure.
While performing these stretches one should stay tall through the torso and drive the pelvis forward to feel the stretch at both ends of the quadriceps muscles. The goal of the stretch is to have the flexed knee directly along side of the down side leg. By doing so, pressure behind the knee cap will be reduced along with subsequent knee pain. Need a new or changes in a workout? Contact me and I’ll be happy to help you with that.

A message from Skip Pressler, head of the Maketewah Business Association On Wednesday evening, September 29th, the Maketewah Business Association hosted its eighth “End of Summer Dinner” featuring Maketewah Member, Marty Brenneman. The event began with a social hour, including delicious hors d’oeuvres, followed by a fantastic dinner, prepared by Chef Brandon and his staff. The program followed dinner, with Marty relating highlights of his 46 year career as the voice of the Cincinnati Reds. Marty pulled no punches telling stories about many of his unique experiences and many of the interesting people he got to meet and interact with over his career. Marty concluded his presentation by graciously fielding questions from the audience, until he had to be cut off so we could move on to the second part of the program. As expected Marty was terrific.
Dear Maketewah Members, I hope that each of you had a great start to Fall! We held our member Halloween party this past Friday evening and it did not disappoint! I loved watching the little ones dance like no one was watching out on the dance floor. They had a great time with the costume contest, dance contest, games and just dancing together in general. The haunted house was a hit as well, I giggled watching some of the kids reactions. Priceless! Our Halloween party is also a great time for parents, grandparents and guests to come and enjoy a well thought out and delicious Halloween themed buffet and enjoy some spirits together. It’s overall a great family experience and we couldn’t be happier to see all of the smiling faces and memories being made here at Maketewah! This month we are excited to start out with our Pilgrim golf event that is always a lot of fun. Come dressed warm and ready for a good time. You wont be disappointed! Bring some chili for the cookoff as well! Lastly, be on the lookout for information on our upcoming wine dinner! These are always a great time and Chef Brandon and his team have some incredible dishes planned for you. Also, don’t forget to place your reservations for the Thanksgiving buffet or if you prefer to host Thanksgiving at home, make sure to place your orders for Thanksgiving to-go! Let us do the work and you can take all the credit! We wont tell. Have a great November! As always, I look forward to seeing you around the club! Warm regards, Melissa Paule Membership and Marketing Manager
