Editorial
WELCOME TO
Ladies and Gentlemen, Last year 73.7 million games were sold in Germany – more than ever before. This sales record clearly illustrates the significance of digital games as an industry, but also as the key medium of the digital culture. Turnover, however, did decrease slightly in 2012 due to the transition to a new generation of consoles. This type of downturn in growth, though, is not uncommon for markets in transition. The conditions for dynamic growth are very promising because the indicators regarding the hardware and software on offer are good. In addition, the German consumer environment provides reason for hope: more and more people in Germany are using digital games regularly (2012: 26 million – an increase of five percent compared to 2011). Finally, an essential factor for the stability of the German gaming market is the uniform support for all kinds of business models, platforms and additional services. Germany has been able to establish itself especially in the areas of social gaming, mobile and browser games as one of the top developer countries worldwide. Some of the outstanding games created by German developer studios can be admired every year at the German Computer Games Award. The fact that Germany provides the necessary potential as a location for the industry was recently endorsed by the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology. The industry can look to the future with selfassurance and confidence. With this in mind, I wish you fun and inspiration while reading Key Players.
New markets and Germany’s potential Last year’s forecasts for the gaming industry have proved to be right and the wind of change is still blowing among us. Closed down games, discontinued developments and productions, even shut down studios show where it blew harshest. All of us have read and heard this news. It gets more and more important to have a powerful association for the gaming industry to rely upon. The planned fusion of G.A.M.E. and BIU will provide just that and more. The new association will speak with one voice directly into the ears of Germany’s politicians. They need to help the German game industry in order to prevent it from falling behind international competitors again. High-quality work and bright ideas have always been a key feature of Germany‘s gaming industry and have brought us to the top. We still are in the premiership and it must be our designated target to stay there. Looking through Key Players I see the right people, the expert knowledge, the brilliant ideas. In short: the potential.

THE GER GAMES MA ONLINE- AND BROWSER GAMES
14 million Germans played online and browser games in 2012, making them an integral part of the German games market. This number fell however from 15.5 million in 2011, and with it the revenues from online and browser game fees from 183 million euros to a total figure of 124 million euros in 2012. Browser games refer to internet games which are played directly using the web browser or in a social network. Online games are games which are played mainly or exclusively on the internet and require a previous program installation on the computer. Not included is turnover from the sales of virtual items.

THE GER GAMES MA ITEM SELLING
Virtual items include new characters and virtual weapons for online and browser games as well as additional playing levels for games which were acquired by data media or download. Turnover for virtual items amounted to a total of 226 million euros in 2012. This represents a decline by 3 percent from 233 million in 2011. Against the background of the increasing dynamics of digital business models, the statistical methods used in the co-operation between BIU and GfK to measure turnover of virtual items have been adjusted. For the year 2010, this resulted in an increase in expenditure on virtual items from 73 million euros to 137 million euros. The turnover on virtual items of 233 million euros in 2011 thus increased by 70 percent compared to the previous year. With these adjustments, both growth and changes in user behavior in the segment are realistically reflected.

CipSoft is an independent developer and publisher of online computer games. When founded in 2001, CipSoft’s first MMORPG called Tibia had already been online for more than 4 years. Hence Tibia is now the oldest MMORPG worldwide being online for more than 15 years without any interruption ever since. In 2003 we released our second game, called TibiaME, the first MMORPG for mobile phones worldwide. Both Tibia and TibiaME are still growing strongly until today. In 2013, CipSoft launched their first Prototypes. They are part of CipSoft’s new innovation management. Our vision is to develop and to publish innovative products that are based on new technologies. As developers we aim to realise our own ideas and to develop truly innovative products rather than to imitate existing concepts.

The renowned development studio Funatics Software was founded by gaming industry veterans Thomas Friedmann, Thomas Häuser and Thorsten Kneisel in 1998. Since then, Funatics has been following its central philosophy: »Games mainly need to be fun to play!« As early as 1999, Funatics landed a major coup with a conversion of the tabletop classic »The Settlers of Catan« titled »Catan – The First Island«. Hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic players proved that the game is great fun to play indeed – even over ten years after release, the game is still said to be the best board-game conversion of all time. Just one year later, »Cultures« laid the foundation for one of the most successful product lines in the company’s history: A total of seven titles appeared in the popular »Cultures« series. Funatics has developed several sequels of »The Settlers« partly in corporation with BlueByte, released by Ubisoft. End of 2008, Funatics’ first NDS / PSP title was released: »Tom Clancy’s Endwar«, as well as »Die Siedler – Aufbruch der Kulturen«, which laid the foundation for the first online project of Funatics – »Cultures Online« on www.cultures-online. com. Following this success Funatics has released a new browser game in 2013. »UFO Online – Fight for Earth« is a Unity 3D based browser game, featuring the thrills of a turn-based tactical strategy game and shows high-class 3D graphics. UFO Online has raised frenetic applause in the international press.

Ten years of experience in developing browser games enables us to create high quality games in various programming languages like PHP, Java and frontend technologies like Flash or HTML5 with our international team. Our company policy is to focus on quality rather than quantity. We aim to publish two or three in-house developed games per year and put a high focus on every single one of them. In the future, InnoGames will focus on mobile as well. We have released apps for some games already, and are simultaneously working on several future cross-platform projects for iOS and Android. Because of this, we are especially searching for developers with solid skills in Adobe Air, Cocos 2D-X or C++ mobile. As a growing company, we are always searching for highly motivated developers – frontend and backend – as well as skilled marketing professionals or graphic artists. We offer senior positions as well as traineeships. In our modern office in Hamburg, we live a company culture with flat hierarchies and high team spirit.

Thanks to close collaboration with a wide range of development teams, MORPHICON was once again able to improve their market position in 2012. MORPHICON LTD. was founded in Reading, Berkshire, England in 2004, and established a branch office in Munich, Germany not long after. With the subsidiary MORPHICON MEDIA AG, founded in 2010, we are also expanding into the browser / social games market. MORPHICON is going to further grow its portfolio in 2013 while MORPHICON and PETER GAMES are going to press ahead with the digital distribution of their products and the acquisition of marketing rights for both Europe and worldwide. Since its introduction in 2008, the Peter Games Classics series has become a strong player in the market for budget games. More than 50 titles of the series can now be found in over 1,800 specialist stores and retail outlets all over Germany, and as many as 20 Peter Games Classics titles have made the top 20 of the budget charts so far. Lingoona Grammar Library Each language has its own specific features that usually need to be considered when developing a game (e.g. position of nouns’ adjectives, changes of spelling according to word order, gender and meaning, case forming, etc.). The Lingoona Grammar Library does all of this work automatically, saving valuable development time and resources and without forcing you to use additional toolchains or file formats. Key Features: • API that creates grammatically correct sentences in real-time, using dynamically supplied text blocks and placeholder texts that are assembled and adjusted on the fly before shown on the screen of the user. • Provides developers and translators with numerous options for flexible adaptation of texts and text blocks. • No additional toolchains required to use or translate texts – use the file formats or loaders you are familiar with. • Optional built-in name generator creates proper names from supplied nouns and adjectives. (e.g. for randomized objects, livings, etc.) • Very small, fast and simple API that can be integrated directly into the game (full source code in C++, cross-platform compatible, about 200 KB/language, supporting more than 10,000 requests/sec.) • Available in 6 languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian

»Virgin Lands« embodies the search for new lands, the discovery of the unknown. Founded in 1997, we were among the first studios dedicated to developing graphics for computer games. And to this day, on-going revolutionary developments in both hardware and software mean that we continue to embrace new challenges and possibilities. We are one of today’s top service providers of computer game graphics in Germany, right across the board; from lending a unique style to the buildings of Anno 2070, through to giving faces to the characters of Risen 2. Our portfolio encompasses both big and small productions for games of all kinds: 3D and 2D assets, cinematics, trailers, box artwork and TV spots. You will have seen our work! We set your requirements firmly at the heart of what we do and we place all of our experience at your disposal. We understand games and the flexibility that is needed to create them – and people will see that in your game. Guaranteed.

As I have always been an avid gamer (playing online, offline and tabletop) I really enjoy translating and editing games. I know the terminology of all common platforms as well as the language of the gamers. I translate everything from dialogues and on-screen texts to the manual, the packaging and the website to ensure a consistent and homogeneous localization. For huge projects I cooperate with other freelance translators, and due to this close teamwork we can provide completely translated and edited games projects of almost every size in a reasonable time and with ensured consistency and quality.
• >10 years experience • >9 million translated words • >3 million edited words • Specialization: (MMO)RPGs, Action & Adventure games • Translation of game-related novels, comic books, strategy guides
Anja Weiligmann / Spielworte Freelance Translator / Translation, Localization (English ➜ German)
Anja Weiligmann +49 (0) 2504 / 73 99 601 anja@spielworte.de www.spielworte.de
The language used in-game is a vital component in the enjoyment of a title; a translation may be technically correct, but will strike a false note if it fails to achieve the tone and feel required for the game. Other crucial factors in the success of a game are dialog that sounds authentic, language that is both clear and consistent and a good helping of humor. Besides all this, my love of language and long-standing passion for games will ensure that I provide the right German version for your title.
Key Strengths • 100+ translation projects • Translation of various genres and types of text (dialog, manuals, on-screen text, etc.) • Expertise in console-specific terminology and requirements • Linguistic testing • Knowledge of the market
