WELCOME TO

Ladies and Gentlemen, Highlights and lowlights: though our industry is facing some challenges, the last few years also have been a success story for digital games in many respects – especially in Germany: the proportion of players in the population has increased tremendously. Almost every second German plays digital games today. A few years ago only 20 percent were playing. Digital games are becoming more and more a normal part of everybody’s life, just like books and movies. There are several reasons for this development: One is the ongoing trend that the production and story of new games closely match Hollywood blockbusters. Significantly more realistic graphics, precise motion-capturing and more mature storylines: The games of the next years will reach a level of detail that never before has been possible. This year’s main theme of gamescom »Ready to play – Discover new Worlds« picks up this trend. Combined with the other mega trends of our industry, e.g. towards open game worlds players discover new worlds each time they play digital games with significantly more freedom for the player to experience their own adventure, which is not possible on other media. Mobile and online games are – not only but also – a part of the gaming industry where German developers belong to the best in the world. But why are these games so successful? The answer is easy: the developers make great games and these games are played on platforms people already possess.

Welcome to Key Players! The German games market represents approximately 5.5% of the whole market of interactive gaming content. By this, Germany is one of the leading markets to sell products in the world. Moreover, Germany as a country in the center of Europe provides an excellent infrastructure to market products all over Europe and it is the door to the former Russian federation. It is no surprise that gamescom is the leading trade fair in Europe, and even more, the leading fair in the world. But markets are changing and therefore the digital distribution channels will succeed more and more. The government of Germany released a program called »Digital Agenda«. Its goal: Germany will be the leading digital nation in Europe. The most recent companies in the digital games industry are summarized here in »Key Players«, the well-established compendium of the German games industry. We as the biggest Gaming-Association with more than 70 members assigned are working to reach the goal to create one of the most established and best places to create games in the world.

THE GERMAN GAMES MARKET: AN INTRODUCTION

The German games industry recorded sales of computer and video games totaling 69.5 million units in 2013. This represents a decrease of six percent on the previous year. The turnover of computer and video games software in 2013 in Germany totaled 1.82 billion euros. These revenues are distributed over three core business fields: • Boxed games and downloads: sale of games for PC and consoles as well as mobile games • Online and browser games: expenditures for subscriptions and premium accounts • Downloadable content: expenditures for additional items / item selling

Revenues from computer and video games software totaled 1.82 billion euros on the German market in 2013. With a share of 1.470 billion euros, the classic sale of physical or downloaded games (games for mobile consoles, smartphones & tablets included) still comprises the lion’s share of revenues. Newer business models, such as fees for subscriptions and premium accounts (online and browser games) or expenditure on game expansions and additional items (downloadable content) make up about 19 percent of total revenues.

E H RKET A M SALE OF DATA MEDIA AND DOWNLOADS

The selling of computer and video games – physical or by download – represents the classic business model of the games industry. The consumer acquires a software license that entitles him to use a certain game. During 2013 in Germany 69.5 million games for PC, consoles and mobile devices such as mobile telephones, handhelds or smartphones were sold. This represents a turnover of 1.47 billion euros.

THE GER GAME MA ONLINE- AND BROWSER GAMES

16.3 million Germans played online and browser games in 2013, making them an integral part of the German games market. This number rose from 14 million in 2012, and with it the revenues from online and browser game fees from 124 million euros in 2012 to a total figure of 139 million euros in 2013. Browser games refer to internet games which are played directly using the web browser or in a social network. Online games are games which are played mainly or exclusively on the internet and require a previous program installation on the computer. Not included is turnover from the sales of virtual items.

THE GER GAME MA ITEM SELLING

Virtual items include new characters and virtual weapons for online and browser games as well as additional playing levels for games which were acquired by data media or download. Turnover for virtual items amounted to a total of 209 million euros in 2013. This represents a decline by 7.5 percent from 226 million in 2012. Against the background of the increasing dynamics of digital business models, the statistical methods used in the co-operation between BIU and GfK to measure turnover of virtual items have been adjusted. For the year 2010, this resulted in an increase in expenditure on virtual items from 73 million euros to 137 million euros. The turnover on virtual items of 233 million euros in 2011 thus increased by 70 percent compared to the previous year. In 2013 the turnover, however, saw a decrease for the second year in a row; after a slight drop in 2012 to 226 million euros it dropped further to 209 million euros.

Our Expertise CipSoft is an independent developer and publisher of online computer games. When founded in 2001, CipSoft’s first MMORPG called Tibia had already been online for more than 4 years. Hence Tibia is now the oldest MMORPG worldwide being online for more than 17 years without any interruption ever since. In 2003 we released our second game, called TibiaME, the first MMORPG for mobile phones worldwide. Both Tibia and TibiaME are still growing until today. Our vision is to develop and to publish innovative products that are based on new technologies. As developers we aim to realise our own ideas and to develop truly innovative products rather than to imitate existing concepts.

Funatics developed games for Windows, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. Since 2009, we focus on online games for browsers and mobile computers. Our partners include companies like Ubisoft, Ravensburger Interactive, THQ, gamigo, RussobitM, 101XP and Kalypso Media. We develop our own concepts (e.g. the »Cultures« series) as well as exciting ideas presented to us (e.g. »Panzer General Online« for BlueByte). With our own concepts, we attach great importance to innovative game-play, focusing on fun and high quality. For example, with the Cultures Series, Funatics created the new genre of »Adventure Strategy Games«. Here we manage to combine building strategy game mechanisms with exciting stories and adventures that the protagonists are undergoing. In 2014 we started maintaining and marketing our online games by ourselves with relevant partners.

Our Expertise With Albion Online we want to offer players a true MMO experience whose scope and depth extend to cross-platform play. Whether on Windows, Linux, Mac, Android or iOS, all players will play at the same time on the same main server. The core vision of Albion Online is to deliver fresh, exciting gameplay while at the same time also taking players back to the very roots of the MMO genre. In keeping with this vision, we have completely done away with classes in this open sandbox world. Instead, players are defined by the items they carry and the armor they wear. Another point of emphasis is our belief in the importance of a meaningful connection between player and game; as such, failure in Albion Online truly creates feelings of loss, which in return make any form of victory feel like a true reward.

Lingoona Grammar Library Each language has its own specific features that usually need to be considered when developing a game (e.g. position of nouns’ adjectives, changes of spelling according to word order, gender and meaning, case forming, etc.). The Lingoona Grammar Library does all of this work automatically, saving valuable development time and resources and without forcing you to use additional toolchains or file formats. Key Features: • API that creates grammatically correct sentences in real-time, using dynamically supplied text blocks and placeholder texts that are assembled and adjusted on the fly before shown on the screen of the user. • Provides developers and translators with numerous options for flexible adaptation of texts and text blocks. • No additional toolchains required to use or translate texts – use the file formats or loaders you are familiar with. • Optional built-in name generator creates proper names from supplied nouns and adjectives. (e.g. for randomized objects, livings, etc.) • Very small, fast and simple API that can be integrated directly into the game (full source code in C++, cross-platform compatible, about 200 KB/language, supporting more than 10,000 requests/sec.) • Available in 6 languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian

MORPHICON’s success story began in 2004 in Berkshire, England; shortly thereafter, the German subsidiary was founded in Munich. MORPHICON publishes its entire game portfolio under the label Peter Games which stands for innovative and state-of-the-art interactive entertainment. Thanks to close and productive partnerships with numerous developers, MORPHICON continues to increase its market share. With its subsidiary Morphicon Media AG, MORPHICON expands into the mobile-, socialand browser-games market, while its second subsidiary, workroom, focuses on game design, development and localisation. With Peter Games, MORPHICON pursues the »next-level strategy«: every achievement inspires new challenges. Furthermore, MORPHICON continuously expands the digital distribution of its company portfolio and continues to pursue the purchase of European and global marketing rights. MORPHICON’s next-level strategy has been a tried-and-true formula for the company for many years. The PC games Armed Assault, Arma 2, Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead and Arma 3 that were published by Peter Games in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013 each became number 1 on the full-price games charts in Germany. By introducing the Classics series in 2008, Peter Games has become a major player on the budget market. There are currently over 60 titles of the series in more than 1,300 specialty stores and retail outlets in Germany. The success of the Classics series is proven by 20 titles that have made the top 20 of the budget charts.

Place lime and sugar into an old fashioned glass and muddle (mash the two ingredients together using a muddler or a wooden spoon). Fill the glass with crushed ice and add the Cachaça. A wide variety of fresh fruits can be used in place of lime. In the absence of cachaça, vodka can be used, making a caipiroska. Served on the rocks; poured over ice. Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, made with cachaça (sugar cane hard liquor), sugar and lime. Cachaça is Brazil’s most common distilled alcoholic beverage (also known as Pinga or Caninha). Both rum and cachaça are made from sugarcane-derived products. Specifically with cachaça, the alcohol results from the fermentation of sugarcane juice that is afterwards distilled.

Our Expertise The BIU German Entertainment Software Association is the body which represents the whole entertainment software industry in Germany. With the admission of new members from the rapidly growing markets (browser-, online- and mobile-games) the BIU not only represents the big variety of the entertainment software industry but also 85 percent of the German games market. Gaming in the parliament, a welcome speech at the gamescom opening in 2013 by the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Dr. Philipp Rösler and the laudatory speech at the Deutsche Computerspielpreis (German Federal Game Award) held by Alexander Dobrindt, the Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure are some achievements that show that the BIU is the central point of reference for media, social and political institutions. Furthermore, BIU is the host for Europe’s highlight event, the internationally leading annual consumer and trade fair with a focus on interactive entertainment software: the gamescom. As a host or co-organizer of conferences, workshops and round table discussions, BIU furnishes information about a sector that enhances innovation and entertains a growing audience, currently numbering several millions of customers.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, FFF Bayern continuously supports the development and production of high quality games with a culturally and educationally ambitious approach within the region. The funding is organized in close cooperation with the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology. Since 2009, 54 projects with a total amount of approximately 3 million euros have been funded. With an annual budget of some 520.000 Euros, funding can be applied for: • Content & Concept Development • Prototype Development • Production Applications for support may be submitted twice a year. Dates of the application are published at the beginning of each year at our website. The decisions by the Allocation Committee are published four to five weeks after the application day. Awards The FFF-funded App »FingerPaint Duel« by Cribster was honored »Best German Kids Game 2014« at Germany’s most important Award Ceremony for Computer Games, the DCP in Munich. Our Expertise Is it possible to learn Game Design at a public university? In Germany´s first such bachelor program our students spend a total of 6.300 hours on Game Design, running and completing at least 3 large-scale and high quality game projects in teams. All projects are accompanied by intensive coachings, expert feedback and a strong community. Students also benefit from roomy and versatile work spaces, high-tech equipment (such as a 240m2 Vicom Motion Capturing Studio) and a very close link between education and research. The latter is possible due to well-equipped research and development labs (6 gamelabs), ample research funds and significant partners (such as the Max Planck Institute, various universities, countless small and large sized game companies, and many more). Each year, out of more than 300 applications (in form of creative assignments followed by application interviews) 40 students are selected to study and learn the skills of designing games.

Our Expertise Germany has the world’s most binding rules for the examination and sales restrictions of computer and video games. The Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) is the self-control body of the games industry with internationally recognized testing facilities. The USK has almost twenty years of experience in testing and rating games. The rating process is accompanied and executed by one of the Permanent Representatives of the Supreme Youth Protection Authorities of the Federal States (OLJB) and thereby an authoritative administrative act. Additionally, the USK provides consultancy services for developers and publishers of computer and video games independent from the official classification process. Therefore the client can incorporate aspects regarding youth protection relevant contents in Germany before and during the development process in a more considerate manner and include them in the marketing strategy. Advice can be sought on the design and development of an individual product in line with the relevant legislation. For providers of online game contents, various services are offered to conform to the specific rules of youth protection in Germany. The USK can, for example, offer its members legal protection and active risk management when it comes to youth protection matters online. Companies that decided for a USK membership are, among others: Nintendo, Bigpoint, Crytek, Computec, Gameforge, IDG Entertainment, Upjers, ProSiebenSat.1.
