Powerful social issue ads that’ll Make all of you stop and think Your skin color shouldn’t define your future!

Deforestation Continues With The Turn Of A Page

6

Many people complain about advertisements as an irritating way for companies to invade our everyday lives and cram their products down our throats, but that’s not all that advertisements are good for. The advertisements in this article are excellent examples of effective advertising strategies for social issue campaigns that let their voices be heard. A well-made advertisement is designed to grab your attention and to remain in your memory long after you’ve left it behind, and that is exactly what many of these social causes need. Getting people to think and worry about various social and environmental issues (or even simply getting them to be aware of them) is important for raising public supporting and affecting meaningful changes. A few of the ads are, in fact, commercial ads, but it’s still nice that they champion socially or environmentally aware causes/products. Just like with commercial advertisements, only having the facts is not enough. They are important, but the ad must also appeal to the observer’s emotions. Many studies have indicated that emotion can have a powerful effect on memory formation, ensuring that memories with emotion will last longer than those without. So, here are some of the examples described over there. Let’s see how useful and progressive can ads be. Are they able to affect on you minds meaningfully while changing you views in a positive way? Interested? So go ahead!

# BRING BACK We are living in an increasingly throwaway society where everything, starting from new TV series to the latest scientific discoveries, is being broadcasted, advertised, and thus, well-known across the globe. Without any doubt, social networks play crucial role in raising people’s awareness about worldwide issues and helping them through their cognitive process. Most importantly, websites, like Facebook and Twitter that are used by large public sectors, can unite people of different races, religion, or ethnicities in order to achieve great goals. Their power and influence over millions of Internet users can be epitomized by recent social media campaign directed to set enslaved Nigerian schoolgirls free. Everything started on April 14, 2014 when armed extremists from Islamist group Boko Haram, translated as “Western Education is a Sin”, broke into Government Girls Secondary School in northern Nigerian town called Chibok. After shooting the guards and setting fire to houses, terrorists kidnapped approximately 300 of the pupils and disappeared in the woods. In their video message, a leader of the group threatened to sell hostages and force them into marriage. As surprising as it may seem, nothing, not even a single word was mentioned about this shocking fact neither on American, nor on European TV channels. Had it not been for Ramaa Mosley’s dedication and commitment, we might have never heard of the massive kidnapping. Being a Los Angeles director and a mother of two, Mosley was horrified after reading about Nigerian girls in African newspaper. “I believe, we’ve been desensitized to what goes on in Africa,” She said. “To think that, in 2014, schoolgirls can be kidnapped from their school is barbaric”. As western media remained largely silent, American director decided to transform her initial feelings of powerlessness and helplessness into action. Mosley knew that hostages’ parents were repeating the mantra: “Bring back our girls!” On April 25, she decided to start tweeting the same sentence. The next thing Ramaa did was creating a facebook page with the same title: “I started shouting it on social media hoping that people would listen and they would shout it back.”

OUR GIRLS As western media remained largely silent, American director decided to transform her initial feelings of powerlessness and helplessness into action. Mosley knew that hostages’ parents were repeating the mantra: “Bring back our girls!” On April 25, she decided to start tweeting the same sentence. The next thing Ramaa did was creating a facebook page with the same title: “I started shouting it on social media hoping that people would listen and they would shout it back.” Over a short period of time her followers increased from dozens into thousands, including influential political figures like Hillary Clinton, who tweeted, “Access to education is a basic right & an unconscionable reason to target innocent girls. We must stand up to terrorism. #BringBackOurGirls." Though, Mosley’s main aim was the White House. On Mother’s day, Michelle Obama spread out the video on youtube: “My husband and I are outraged and heartbroken over the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls…I want you to know that Barack has directed our government to do everything possible to support the Nigerian government’s efforts to find these girls and bring them home.” It seems, Mosley’s dedication has been appreciated: her phrase being used on tweeter more than 800, 000 times, protests being held in the cities of the US and Europe. Still, the media war has only just begun. “It has consumed my entire life since I heard about kidnapping and it will continue like that till the girls are rescued.” Mosley states. After all, in the world where everyone can get popular in fifteen minutes, these innocent victims of the unmerciful society DO deserve to be heard of. In another words, #BRINGBACKOURGIRLS!

For Econ Lovers Since 2009 economic crisis has been raising in some member states of EU, which was caused by the failure of their government’s monetary and fiscal politics. The main cause of the ongoing situation lays in increased austerity measures in countries of recession. Austerity policies and welfare cuts, that were implemented in highly indebted countries, have been heavily affecting population, thus leading to extreme increase of a gap between poor and rich, resulting in high rate of poverty. Number of countries suffering from crisis has been increasing. Portugal, Greece, Ireland, and Cyprus entered the crisis zone lately, due to different reasons. Each country has been implementing different policies to fight the crisis, some of them decided to put emphasis on fiscal austerity measures, while others took more risky decisions, putting the effects of the crisis on the shoulders of government, but still managed to pull it through. Effect of Austerity policies are controversial amongst economists, but the term itself refers to measures, that decrease sovereign debt by cutting government’s spending and reducing social welfare, which definitely is resulting in dissatisfaction of citizens. Besides just dissatisfaction, there a lot more ways it is affecting society: unemployment, disability on health-care system, poverty and lack of social services are the main outcomes of austerity measures, affected countries’ citizens have been facing lately. Furthermore, austerity usually tends to increase economic inequality within a society, since poor people depend more on state welfare. Put simple, welfare cuts affect most directly the lower classes of society. Because of this, voices rise that suggest a new economic and social model which would take the Euro zone out of the crisis by investing in education, public services and infrastructure measures to put people back to work. It is up to the government to decide what kind of measures should be taken to either slow down or stop the process of recession, also it’s government’s duty to come up with the ways, money is supposed to come from. The usual solutions governments come up with are increasing taxation and decreasing number of jobs in public sector, which is resulting in increasing gap between rich and poor and high rates of unemployment, for example in UK by 2016 1 million public sector jobs are planned to be cut out. Such kind of decisions lead to redistribution of wealth between social classes and the outcome of the created situation can only be social unrest in the country. Affected countries are not only dealing with public dissatisfaction, but also undergoing the process of recession. Recession itself can not be predicted weather will be long or short term, but it can definitely be viewed as a result of low quality stimulation of national industries, that are no more able to compete with international ones. Some member states of EU are facing harsh economical issues that could have a destructive influence on their economics in a long run. Dissatisfaction is arising among citizens, while government is putting policies into action, but the outcome still is not good enough. Economical policies in EU did not only fail to bring balance into action, but also arose risks that could worsen already existent situation.

When You Are Hungry Zakaria, Even a Cold Mchadi Is Sugar Once upon a time there was a guy called Zakaria who was living a fairy-tale life. His obsession for food was as truly astonishing as love of Romeo and Juliet. Being fabulously rich, he could afford himself the best cooks in the whole country. Every day our hero was served by various types of delicious food, exquisitely delivered for him. His passion for food was continuous and lifestyle unchangeable until… One day Zakaria found out about the upcoming session of the European Youth Parliament and decided to fill out an application form. After going through the selection process, he got picked for the regional session. Zakaria arrived at the opening ceremony well-prepared, full of enthusiasm and dedication. After long hours of team-building, our glutton got hungry, his stomach started bubbling and he could no more concentrate. That’s why he got extremely happy when lunch call was announced. Going downstairs he could only think about delicious food he would be able to eat. Though, after arrival into the dining room, all his expectations and high hopes crushed down. Looking at salads and cold mashed potatoes stuffed in plastic boxes, Zakaria decided to go straight to the dessert. But, by the time he was able to reach for the plate for cookies, there were no sweets left at all. So Zakaria decided that his priorities were higher than he could actually pull off and preferred to starve until the decent food would arrive. The committee work started. After exhausting hours of intense working process, our hero could hardly move, all he could think of was plate full of different types of delicacies. By the time he was being tortured by his own thoughts about meals, dinner time arrived. Unfortunately, Zakaria’s committee was running late and when he got to the dining hall all of the food was gone expect one mchadi that had a bite taken off it. With extremely horrified and troubled expression on his face, our glutton looked around, checking for any sign of decent food, but he wasn’t able to find any. So Zakaria decided to go off his limits and eat mchadi that was laying in front of him. Touching food with trembling hands, he realized he could eat anything at that moment even if it looked disgusting and grossed him out. Surprisingly, after biting off mchadi, Zakaria realized it was the best meal he had ever tasted in his entire life. Truly, when you are hungry Zakaria, even a cold mchadi is as good as sugar!

Fellow procrastinators, In the 21st century era of technology one thing that unites as all is procrastination. With the popularization of iphones and other Android phones came the popularization of itunes, google store and thus games. As students who have a lot of work to do different games provide a perfect strategy to waste time. Games come and go as if they were living things: growing up, reaching maturity, and then retiring. Farmville, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, Candy Crush and 2048 are only six representatives of the phenomena of addictive games. First few of these games are already long forgotten as they have already retired, but the last two (Candy Crush, 2048) are now, at this moment played all around the world. While playing only few realize the work and effort that has been put into the creation of these games. You, the players, seldom think about what was the inspiration to create 2048 or who were the creators of Candy Crush… So… Candy Crush Candy Crush is a variation of Bejeweled. Each level consists of a board filled with different colored candies and obstacles. The instructions for this game are very easy, you have to crush the candies by aligning them in lines and then tapping on them. Genius isn’t it??? The game was designed by the largest game developer on Facebook, King. Candy Crush was released in April 2012 on Facebook. As the game gained popularity it was made into an app for Iphone and Android phones. At the moment it has 46 million monthly users. As of February 7, 2014, Candy Crush, the most popular app on Facebook, had more than 61 million likes on the application page. It has long ago passed Famrville, the game that once used to be played in every household. Although the inspiration that led to the creation of Candy Crush, remains unknown, it is surprising that Candy Crush has managed to adopt the principles of Bejeweled and acquire all the claims for its popularity. For me Candy Crush was never more than a game my friends played, I never understood what aspect of this game attracted people all over the world. Although I cannot say this with much certainty, I believe that the craving for something simple and almost unique tricked us into thinking that playing Candy Crush is the better way of spending one’s time. 2048 Unlike candy Crush, 2048 was created by a 19 year-old Italian Gabrielle Cirulli in 2014. After its first release the game gained extensive popularity as it is very simple and addictive. The purpose of this game is to slide numbered tile on a grid, combine them and create a tile with the number 2048. At first reaching 2048 seemed impossible to many, but now, only two months after the release of the game many have succeeded into winning the game. What is interesting about this game is the fact that it was just an experiment of the author to find out whether he could create a game in a single weekend. The author himself acknowledged that the game was a clone of Veewo Studios’ app 1024. Cirulli went on to say that he was not willing to make money on something that he didn’t invent, quite a justifiable cause. 2048 is already very popular in the world, Georgia is no exception. It is unlikely that an Iphone or an Android owner hasn’t got 2048 downloaded on their phone. So Candy Crush if the math geeks win over you, don’t be surprised the best way to procrastinate is the simplest one!

Anti-PED

The end,

Have you ever been on anti-PED? If yes, you will probably get my point. If not – you’re both lucky and unlucky. You’re not lucky as you’ve missed so many great parties! And you’re lucky as you still have the first excitement to experience very soon. So, what is anti-PED?? First of all, it is the very end of the session, when you realize that it’s over and you’ve already managed to get an awful PED and now you’re struggling with it. But it’s also a beginning - Beginning of new relationships, out from committee works and General Assembly.

The beginning or The middle? These relationships, these contacts are not obligatory anymore - it’s just one’s free choice. Session is over, you go to your normal life and suddenly you realize, that you’ve started to miss your committee members, your amazing journos, attentive chairs and the most dedicated orgas. And you hurry to anti-PED to meet all those gorgeous, funny, energetic, weird, and eccentric people once again, tell them how much you’ve missed them. You just party around, get closer to some awesome guys and here you are: you’ve just got a few really good new friends!! The middle – it’s the most interesting part. Anti-PED is something in between, somehow it’s the end of the session, somehow it’s the beginning of new friendship.. Aaand… Do you know that feeling of something not so clear, but so desired? Every time I go to anti-PED I know that I’ve had a great session, and I know that there’s still going to be the other one. So, it’s a farewell to something gone and a welcome to something coming ahead. It is the middle, a moment between something great and something even more great!!
