In The Heart Of Northern Norway Malangen Resort serves as an excellent starting point and base camp for those looking to explore the Tromsø region and Senja Island. There are plenty of activities at the resort and beautiful hikes in the dramatic surrounding nature. The resort's location on the map also ensures that several attractions and fantastic natural experiences are easily accessible by car. The resort takes its name from the Malangen fjord it sits beside. The word formation "ang" in "Malangen" predates the Viking Age. The first part of the name, "Mal," likely originates from the Old Norse word for border, "mala." The fjord has historically been considered a place where the Norse, Sámi, and Kven areas of the North converged. With the resort as the starting point, you can experience exiting adventures, and the melting pot of Norwegian coastal culture, Sámi and Kven cultures, along with the urban life in Tromsø, the largest city in Northern Norway. 8

DOG SLEDDING THROUGH THE WHITE SILENCE
L
ead a team of eager huskies through the snow-covered Arctic landscape while admiring the breathtaking scenery. Did you know that Malangen Resort is one of few dog sledding providers in Northern Norway where the dogs are not chained up but instead live two good freinds together in pens? Located near Camp Nikka, we have an intimate group of eager huskies just waiting to take you into the wilderness. We will start the adventure with a lesson about how to manage your own husky team. We drive in pairs (one driver and one passenger) with a chance to swap places halfway. The adventure concludes with a delicious light snack by an open fire. We have built our camp small enough, so there is no room for mass tourism and stress of any kind. You can focus on enjoying one of the best experiences the far north has to offer!
All our dog sledding trips include thermal clothing, a lesson in managing your husky team and a hot meal after we take care of the dogs. Please note that guests will drive the sled rather than ride with a guide. Dog sledding is an activity that requires a certain level of physical fitness and is not recommended for individuals with back or neck injuries or for pregnant women.

UNCHAINED DOGS
The dog yard at Malangen Resort has been designed with the welfare of the dogs in mind. The dogs here are unchained. They live in pairs in pens where they can move freely around. To ensure that the dogs get enough physical and mental exercise every day throughout the year, we have a big yard where they can run and play in groups together. 23

THE SEVEN SUMMITS Seven of the mountain peaks on the Malangen peninsula are about a 30-minute drive, making them easily accessible with transport from the resort. Various routes up the mountains have been mapped by ski touring and avalanche expert Espen Nordahl, who has literally written the book Ski Touring in Troms. Nordahl has combined his own experiences with the knowledge of experienced locals when working out the routes up and down the mountains. These routes and maps provide the foundation for being able to describe the best ski touring options on the Malangen peninsula in detail, as well as for being able to ski up and down the mountains as safely as possible. Guests on Malangen Resort’s “Resort to Summit” follow in the footsteps of some of Norway’s most experienced Arctic mountain skiers.
30
Malangen Resort’s ski touring adventures have been designed in collaboration with Espen Nordahl (b. 1960). He has been one of the most eager ski touring enthusiasts in Tromsø since he moved to the city in 1982. He has worked as a project manager at the Centre for Avalanche Research and Education (CARE) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and as an avalanche forecaster for the Norwegian Energy Regulatory Authority. Nordahl is the editor of the book Safer Ski Touring in Norway. Nordahl has written the book Ski Touring in Troms, which is the bible for the skiers in the ski touring capital Tromsø.

BENTSJORDTINDEN 1,160 M Summit coordinates: 070133 / North 7715622.43, East 641265.42 Starting point: Vollstad. Park by FV. 286, 31 km from Malangen Resort. Vertical metres: 1160 Time up: 3-4 hours Time down: 1-2 hours Best season: January-June Orientation: W-N Steepest gradient: 30–35 degrees ATES classification: 1 - Simple / 2 - Challenging Hazards: Runout zones. Starting zones. Cornices.
A classic summit that can easily be seen from downtown Tromsø. It offers exciting and varied ski terrain and the view towards Kvaløya is magnificent. You have the opportunity to try more challenging alpine ascents and steep descents. This is a great trip until late spring. 1.1.2: Head up through the woods in a southwest direction. The first part might be a little challenging. Follow the east side of a small ridge uphill until you cross the treeline, then take a more westerly direction and traverse up towards Sandhaugen. At an altitude of 500 metres head southeast. Be aware that between 620-650 metres the slope angle is around 30-35 degrees. Enter a great amphitheatre that leads all the way up to the summit ridge. It is possible to take a detour to Durmålstinden (1140 metres) before following the ridge up to the summit of Bentsfjordtinden. The gentlest approach to the summit is from the southwest. There is a short, steep stretch along the ridge just before the top. DESCENT: Follows the same route as the ascent. 1.1.2: A slightly more challenging alternative is to
32
go north up the valley that ends in the pass that lies to the east of the summit. Start in the Skarstad-Hansvold area. Long stretches on this route go through avalanche paths and potential runout zones, and the valley is a terrain trap. Head up to the logging road and continue up along the east side of the river. You eventually enter a large and impressive valley, which you follow upwards. Be aware of potential avalanche runout zones. It gets steeper from 890 metres and up to the pass at 1050 metres. The final part has a 45-50 degree slope, depending on the size and shape of the cornice. Here you should put your skis on your backpack and consider using an ice axe and crampons. Some easy climbing from the pass and up to the summit. DESCENT: This descent is a little more challenging. 1.1.3: If you want a steeper variant, ski a little further to the east down through the amphitheater. From 840 metres, ski down the consistent 30-40 degree chute and get 300 metres of vertical drop. You will eventually reach the tracks from 1.1.2, which you follow back to the start.

Rarely visited, but this is a great mountain for ski touring. The exciting chute, that can easily be seen from Tromsø City, is a good alternative descent. 1.2.1: The first part of the route follows a logging road along Ytterelva, through a relatively sparsely wooded area. As you approach Svartdalen, continue up the valley along the right side of the river. The terrain is easy to navigate, but be aware that you are heading into runout zones from potential avalanches from the mountainside. Continue up the valley and then go northeast and follow a straight line towards the summit. DESCENT: It is most common to follow the same route as the ascent, with variations in choice of line.
1.2.2: A somewhat more spectacular and steeper alternative is to ski down the chute towards the northeast. The chute, which can be easily seen from Tromsø, has a gradient of 40-45 degrees in the wsteepest part. At the bottom, follow the gentle stretch along the east side of Kvitfjellet back to the starting point.

KVANNFJELLET 1,011 M
The large and open slopes on Kvannfjellet are ideal for beginners. But there are also steeper lines to be explored. Skiing through the forest on the last part of the descent is great fun. Once over the treeline, aim west of map point 490 and continue northeast up some hilly terrain. At 600 metres there are some short, steep slopes.
