Welcome Welcome to the 20th Annual Calhoun Enterprises Celebrity Golf Tournament

I

n the midst of recovering from a recession, the gulf oil spill rendering thousands without jobs to add to the current escalating unemployment rate, we must remember that God is still in charge. We give Him the praise and honor for blessing the Calhoun Family to assist so many with employment and charitable causes.

This is the 20th year that we have presented the Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament which was implemented to be a blessing to Tri-City's economy. With this in mind, it is our goal to welcome you with the best southern hospitality this side of the Mason Dixie. Our co-chairpersons are the legendary Smokey Robinson, Teddy Gentry of the world renown singing group, "Alabama," and Dr. Julius "Dr. J" Erving. Many thanks to our past Co-Chairman, Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield who has served us for seven years. We have been assured that Evander will be riding the course to make sure all is well.

We hope you will take the opportunity, while you are here and not on the golf course, to not only reflect on our past but envision our future

Elton N. Dean, Sr. Chairman

reg Calhoun met Walter and Eddie Payton while playing golf with one of his grocery store suppliers.

The day George Bryan of Bryan Meat Company, introduced Greg Calhoun to Walter Payton, was the beginning of a friendship of a lifetime for the two. During conversation, Mr. Calhoun learned of Walter Payton and Michael Jordan’s endorsements by Hanes, Inc., and asked Payton if he could help him by endorsing his first golf tournament. Thus, the first tournament for Calhoun carried the title “The Walter Payton Charity Golf Tournament” to benefit Sickle Cell Anemia. Payton had expressed that he had several close friends with the Sickle Cell Disease. The tournament was very successful. After Payton’s illness and later demise, the tournament was renamed the Calhoun Celebrity Golf Tournament and still benefits Sickle Cell with the addition of other charities. Although, his brother had passed, Eddie Payton has never missed participating in a tournament. For this, we thank you Eddie Payton. In salute of the dedication of Walter Payton, the Walter Payton Award was established to award a financial scholarship to an exceptional athletic who is also an honor student. This year’s recipient:

Lee Elder

TraiLblazer for all People of Color in Golf

E

lder had grown up poor in Dallas. He was nine when his father, Charles, died in Germany during World War II. His mother, Almeta, rarely left her room after that and died three months later. One of 10 children, Lee was eventually sent to Los Angeles to live with an aunt. As a preteen, he taught himself to play golf by sneaking onto golf courses at night; picked up work as a caddie, and later started hustling for extra money, once playing an 18-hole match cross-handed. Elder readily answered his call of duty when drafted into the Army. His commanding officer at Fort Lewis in Washington State recognized and appreciated Elder's knowledge of the game, partnered and played every free time that they could get to the course. Elder joined the all-Black United Golf Association Tour immediately after his tour of duty in the Army. He was outstanding and dominated the tour, winning five UGA National Championships. In one stretch, Elder won 21 of 23 tournaments. In November of 1967, Elder became one of first AfricanAmerican golfers on the PGA tour. The following year, he captured international attention by tying Frank Beard and Jack Nicklaus for the lead in the American Golf Classic. Beard was out of the playoff after bogeying the first extra hole; but, Elder and Nicklaus dueled evenly for four holes. Nicklaus finally won with a birdie on the fifth hole after Elder narrowly missed a long birdie putt. Elder was invited by Gary Player to play in the 1971 South African PGA Tournament which was the first integrated tournament in that country's history. He accepted with certain stipulations be met to include that the gallery be integrated, and that he and his wife would be allowed to stay at whatever hotel they chose and free to go wherever they wanted to go. His first PGA victory came in the 1974 Monsanto Open, automatically winning an invitation to the 1975 Masters. Elder also won the Houston Open in 1976 and played in the 1977 Masters. In 1979, Elder became the first black golfer to play for the Ryder Cup team. Calhoun Enterprises Celebrity Golf Tournament

Help Elect The First African-American Man To Family Court by Voting Calvin Williams, Circuit Judge, Place 8th

W

ith the support and encouragement of many friends, colleagues and family prayer, I have decided to seek the office of Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge, Place 8, Family Court. I have the legal knowledge, background and experience to fulfill the duties of this position with integrity. In 1985, after graduating Carver High School here in Montgomery, I began a journey of public service. Initially that journey started with my active duty enlistment into the military. Currently, I continue to enjoy military service as a Major in the United States Army Reserves. Having benefited from military service and after deployment in the Persian Gulf War, in 1991 I continued my public service by becoming a Deputy Sheriff with the Montgomery County Sher-

iff's office. While serving Montgomery County, I attended and graduated college and went on to complete law school in 1998. I immediately began to practice law, and some of the first cases that I handled were in family court. Cases which ranged from divorces, custody, guardianship and child support; all having significant impacts on the lives of families. My private practice also involved part time duties as a Montgomery City Prosecutor and in that capacity I had an opportunity to see the destructive effect of domestic violence upon the family. My public service continued after serving in Operation Enduring Freedom, and in 2004, I transitioned into the City Attorney's office, becoming the first full-time Montgomery City Prosecutor.

Hearing a greater need to serve, I became a Deputy District Attorney with the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and quickly became involved with some of the most serious cases affecting our families and community. The need to intervene early into the family and to address problems involving our teenagers became apparent. Over these years of service, I have gained valuable insight into the need to affect and address change at the proper level of our judicial system. It is with this insight, inclusive of legal and practical experience, that I offer myself as a candidate for Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge, Place 8, Family Court. I seek your support, request your prayers and invite your suggestions as I pursue this position.

Sadie's Ball Striking Tips Better Ball Striking is something everyone is always striving for. Here are some helpful hints to strike the ball more solid. First of all, getting into good posture is a must! Feet should be 12-18 inches apart, arms hanging straight down, and the butt of the club about 6 inches from the belt buckle. Your back should be bent over about 30 degrees with the back as straight as you can get it. Try poking your rear end out as if you are butting someone out of your way because they are invading your space. This lifts the chin so the left shoulder now has a place to turn to. To complete the set up, slightly tilt the upper body to the right about 3 to 5 degrees. As you start the backswing, remember to maintain this posture all the way to impact. The best way to maintain posture is to imagine your rear end is pressed against a wall and your rear is holding a piece of paper on the wall. Do not let the paper drop to the ground until after you make contact with the ball. Turn the shoulders and allow the club to turn away. You do not have to reach parallel at the top! The backswing stops when the shoulders quit turning. The downswing starts with the hips and then the shoulders immediately follow to help keep the club on plane. A good check point on the down swing is to point the butt of the club at the ball as the club gets halfway down. Most higher handicappers have the butt of the club pointing between the ball and their feet which is a sign the club is too vertical coming down. This promotes an over the top swing. Impact position is everything! The right foot should be slightly off the back heel at impact and the right knee is slightly pointed inward toward the ball. The hips should be cleared at impact with the belt buckle pointing between the ball and the target. The back of the left hand should be flat at impact and about 1 inch past the clubhead at impact with the irons. Left arm should be straight and left leg should be close to locked. To properly release the club, the right forearm turns over the left with full extension of the both arms. Finish high with the body fully facing the target, the right knee almost touching the left knee, and the right foot completely on its toes. There you have it. If you have trouble please consult your local golf professional.
