Jeder, der Berge erklimmt, kennt den Moment: Du stehst auf dem Gipfel, und dahinter tun sich neue, unglaubliche Berge auf, die ebenfalls nur darauf warten, bestiegen zu werden. So ist jeder Berg nur eine Etappe. Und jeder Gipfel die beste Motivation für neue, höhere Ziele.

E: Anyone who climbs mountains is familiar with this feeling: you have reached the top, and suddenly you see new, breathtaking peaks, each one just waiting for you to go up next. In this sense every mountain is merely one step on your path. And each peak gives you the motivation to reach new and higher goals.

Genau auf einem solchen Gipfel stehen wir. Wir haben unseren Mount Ten bestiegen. Gemeinsam mit Freunden haben wir in den vergangenen zehn maloja-Jahren den mal steinigen, mal überraschenden, mal steileren, mal flacheren, auf jeden Fall immer aufregenden Weg hinauf gemeistert. Und gemeinsam mit ihnen wollen wir weitermarschieren. Nach einer kurzen Rast.

That’s exactly where we are now. We’ve climbed our Mount Ten. In the past ten years, accompanied by friends, we went on a journey; sometimes it was rocky or full of surprises, sometimes steep, at other times level – but it was always exciting and wonderful. We want to continue along this path together with our friends. But not before we’ve taken to the time for a short rest.

But how did the journey to the top of Mount Ten that we set out on in 2004 change us? Simple answer: Our roots have grown stronger, our passion has grown deeper.

Unsere Passion für das, was wir tun und für wen wir es tun, treibt uns an. Wir leben für das Draußen, für die Erlebnisse mit Freunden in der Natur, beim Wandern am Berg, beim Klettern am Fels, beim Biken im Wald. Das sind die perfekten Momente, die jeder erleben soll – und die wir begleiten, vielleicht sogar ein Stück weit ermöglichen wollen.

Our passion for the things we do and the people we do them for is what drives us. We live for the outdoors, for adventures with friends in nature, climbing a mountain, climbing a rock, biking in the woods. Those are the perfect moments that everyone should have the chance to experience – and that we want to be a part of, and possibly even help to make possible.

Unsere Wurzeln liegen in den Alpen. Von dort kommen wir. Und dorthin kehren wir für Mount Ten zurück – natürlich auf neuen, eigenen Wegen. Denn wir sind, wer wir sind. Dazu gehört unsere Neugierde auf Neues.

We are rooted in the Alps. We come from there. And we will go back there for Mount Ten – our own new way. Because we are who we are. And we are always looking for new adventure.

WIE ALLES BEGANN – Teil 2 Es gibt nur dieses Foto. Im Internet haben wir’s entdeckt, dieses Bilderbuch-Powderfoto. Ein Snowboarder, wie er durch die Luft segelt, um ihn herum nichts als Pulverschnee und weiße Kuppen. Klein steht’s unter dem Bild: Maloja. Dort muss es entstanden sein. Gehört haben wir davon noch nie. Trotzdem fahren wir hin. An unserem letzten Tag von einer Woche im Engadin, in diesem herausragenden Winter 2001. Bei mehr als einem halben Meter Neuschnee – und wir in St. Moritz mittendrin. Doch uns zieht es ins unbekannte Maloja. Den Ort, von dem wir nicht einmal wissen, ob man dort skifahren und snowboarden kann. So manche gute Entscheidung im Leben erschließt sich eben nicht sofort. Zum Glück war unsere Neugierde groß genug.

HOW IT BEGaN – Part 2 E: There was just this picture. We discovered it on the internet, a picture book image of powder snow. A snowboarder flying through the air, all around him nothing but soft powder snow and white mountain tops. A tiny title under the image: Maloja. That’s where it must have been taken. We’d never heard of the place before. Still, we go there. On our last day of a week spent in the Engadin mountains, in that exceptional winter 2001. More than half a meter of new fallen snow – and we are in the middle of St. Moritz. But we are drawn to that unknown place called Maloja. A place where we do not even know if you can snowboard and ski. Many a good decision in life is not immediately disclosed as such. What luck that our curiosity was big enough.

WIE ALLES BEGANN – Teil 3 Maloja liegt 17 Kilometer von St. Moritz entfernt. Tatsächlich bietet das verschlafene Örtchen perfektes Powder-Gelände: einen steilen Hang, von Föhren durchsetzt, einen weißen, Puderzucker-Teppich, alles unverspurt. Nur: Wo ist der Lift? Positive Unruhe macht sich breit, als wir den Tellerlift entdecken. Auf die erste Freude folgt Ernüchterung: Der Lift steht still! Aber wie wir da zweifelnd durch den Schnee in Richtung Hang stapfen, geht auf einmal die Tür zum Lifthäuserl auf. „Gut, dass Ihr da seid“, ruft uns der „Liftler“ in seinem Graubündner Dialekt entgegen. „Dann schalt ich doch mal an.“

HOW IT BEGaN – Part 3 E: Maloja is located 17km away from St. Moritz. And yes, the sleepy place offers perfect powder conditions: a steep slope, interspersed with pine trees, a perfect sugary blanket of snow covering everything, no tracks anywhere. But – where is the lift? Happy bustle prevails when we discover the platter lift. The first excitement, though, is immediately followed by sudden disillusionment. The lift is standing still! But as we hesitantly start climbing the slope, a door creaks open and the lift warden looks out of his little shack. „Good to see you,“ he calls in his broad local dialect. „looks like it’s time to rev up the engine.“

WIE ALLES BEGANN – Teil 4 Was wir dann an diesem Hang erleben, ist Geschichte. Geblieben ist das Bild vom unberührten Tiefschnee zwischen tiefverschneiten Nadelbäumen, das Gefühl von purer Lebenslust und in den Ohren noch unser Jubel, der über den Berg hallt. Ein perfekter Tag an einem alten Tellerlift irgendwo im Oberengadin.

HOW IT BEGaN – Part 4 E: What we experienced that day on the slope is history. The picture embossed in our memories is one of virgin snow, deep and soft beneath the pine trees, the feeling of pure joy of life and in our ears the cries of pure glee that echo from the hills. A perfect day with an old platter lift somewhere in the upper Engadin.

WIE ALLES BEGANN – Teil 5 Maloja ist danach im Freundeskreis zu einem geflügelten Wort geworden, zum Inbegriff für etwas Gutes und Schönes. Hat das Essen gut geschmeckt, hat’s maloja geschmeckt. Wann immer ein Gipfel, ein Trail oder ein Moment schön war, war es maloja. Das Erlebnis am Tellerlift wurde auch zum Inbegriff dafür, dass es sich lohnt, eigene Wege zu gehen. Es braucht nicht viel, um einen perfekten Tag zu gestalten. Dazu gehören nur etwas Mut, Fantasie und gute Freunde. Als wir uns 2004 aufmachten, die Marke zu gründen und der Firma eine eigene Unternehmensphilosophie zu geben, konnten wir viele dieser Erkenntnisse unmittelbar einfließen lassen. Es war nur konsequent, der Marke diesen Namen zu geben. Das Lebensgefühl „maloja“ treibt uns an, damals wie heute.

HOW IT BEGaN – Part 5 E: Maloja soon became a coined phrase in our circle of friends – equal to anything heartfelt, good and beautiful. If the food was good it tasted maloja. Whenever a peak, a trail or just a certain moment in time felt good, it was maloja. But that experience at that simple platter lift also became the paragon for the value of going your own way. It doesn’t take much to create a perfect day. Just some courage, imagination and good friends. When we started in 2004 to create our own brand and start a company and give it its own unique mission we were able to draw back on these revelations. It seemed right to give the brand this name. The „maloja“ way of life propels us, then and now.

„ClassIcIssIma“ a rIde INto sprINg

Mailand, 20.05.2015. Unser Auftrag: 300km nach Sanremo... mit dem Rennrad immer der GPS Route folgend.

E: Milano, May 20, 2015. Our mission: 300km to Sanremo... on our racing bikes, consistently following the GPS route.

Mailand – Sanremo, bei diesem Klassiker lohnt erst einmal ein Blick in die Geschichte. Wir schreiben das Jahr 1907 als sich am 14. April 33 Rennfahrer auf ihren Stahlrädern auf den Weg machten, den Besten unter sich auszumachen. Gewonnen hat bei diesem ersten „italienischen Klassiker“ übrigens ausgerechnet ein Franzose - Lucien Mazan. Seine Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit damals lag bei beachtlichen 26,6 km/h.

Milano – Sanremo. It’s worthwhile to take a look back at the history of this classical route. The date is April 14, 1907. 33 racing cyclists mount their steel frame bikes and take off on a race to determine the best and fastest amongst them. Of all competitors a Frenchman was to win this first “Italian Classic”, Lucien Mazan. That day he averaged at the remarkable speed of 26,6 km/h.

107 Jahre und ein paar Tage später stehen wir nun in den frühen Morgenstunden auf der Piazza Castello. Mit einigen Espressi zum Frühstück wollen wir die berühmte Strecke bis zum Abend gefahren haben. Die Motivation könnte nicht besser sein. Allerdings wissen wir noch nicht, was es bedeutet die mehr als 300 Kilometer an einem Tag zu radeln. Vor allem so ganz ohne Team, das einem normalerweise den Wind von der Brust nimmt. E: 107 years and a few days later, in the very early morning we stand on the Piazza Castello. A couple espressi for breakfast, and we are determined to have ridden the famous route by this evening. We couldn’t be better motivated. But, at this time, we don’t know yet what it means to ride 300 kilometers in one day. Especially without the entourage of a team that normally breaks some wind.

Um es vorweg zu nehmen: Die ersten 130 bis 140 Kilometer sind die schlimmsten. Es gibt da immer diese imaginäre Mauer vor dir mit der klaren Botschaft: „Du hast noch nicht mal die Hälfte geschafft!“.

E: Straight off – the first 130 to 140 kilometers are the worst. You are constantly riding towards a virtual wall with lettering that says “You are not even half way there!”.

Es geht durch die Poebene auf breiten, rauhen, löchrigen Bundesstraßen vorbei an Binasco, Pavia, Voghera, Tortona, Novi Ligure, und Ovada. Auch wenn der Wind recht gut für uns steht, die Ampeln eher italienisch – will heißen immer grün – bewertet werden und wir bestens verpflegt wurden, sind wir erleichtert als wir den TurchinoPass – mit 588 Meter der höchste Punkt der Route – erreicht haben. Trotz aller Strapazen die Zwischenbilanz bis dahin kann sich sehen lassen. Ein Schnitt von 36,5 km/h steht auf dem Tacho.

The tour takes you across the lowlands of the Po River on wide, rough and porous through-roads past Binasco, Pavia, Voghera, Tortona, Novi-Ligure and Ovada. Even if the wind is favorable and we mostly treat the traffic lights the typical Italian way – namely acting as if they were always green – and we are wonderfully catered for, we are truly relieved to reach the Turchino Pass – at 588 meters altitude the highest point on this route. Despite all the exertions our average mileage at this stage is presentable. Our speedometer reports 36,5 km/h.

Die Abfahrt kommt zur rechten Zeit. Die Fahrt hinunter an die Mittelmeerküste von Genua in strahlender Sonne pusht gewaltig. Wir fühlen uns als hätten wir Startnummern auf dem Trikot.

The descent comes in good timing. The ride downwards to the Mediterranean coast of Genoa in bright sunshine gives us tremendous moments. We feel as if we had bibs with competition numbers on our jerseys. Italy | Mailand – Sanremo

Der italienischen Riviera folgend nimmt auch der Verkehr auf den Straßen wieder zu. Aber wir sind in Italien, noch dazu mit dem Rennrad unterwegs - also freie Fahrt! Dem Ziel immer näher kommend folgen die Steigung nach Cipressa (etwa 20 Kilometer vor Sanremo und auf 240 Meter Höhe gelegen) und der Anstieg nach Poggio di Sanremo (nur noch knapp sechs Kilometer!, auf 162 Meter Höhe gelegen). Im Radsport spricht man nur von der Cipressa und dem Poggio. Einen Kilometer vor dem Finale am Poggio muss Leif mit einem Platten aufgeben und ich habe das Rennen quasi gewonnen. Freunde die zusammen eine so lange Wegstrecke hinter sich gebracht haben, müssen auch gemeinsam ins Ziel kommen. Also umdrehen, Rad wechseln und dann den letzten Kilometer gemeinsam genießen. Am Ende in Sanremo steht ein 33-er Schnitt.

E: We follow the coastline of the Riviera in increasing traffic. But not to forget, we are on racing bikes in Italy – that means we have the right of way! Advancing on our goal we reach the ascent to Cipressa (about 20 km short of Sanremo at an altitude of 240 m) and the climb to Poggio di Sanremo (only six kilometers! and 162 altitude meters away). Insiders refer only to the Cipressa and the Poggio. One kilometer away from the Poggio finale Leif is forced to give up with a flat tire, so I have more or less made the race. But my feeling is that friends who have come so far together need to reach their goal together, too. I turn around, we change the tire, and enjoy those last few kilometers together. In Sanremo our average is 33 km/h.

Was bleibt nach 318 Kilometern? Viel Substanzverlust trotz der Zufuhr von 14 Flaschen à 0,5 Liter und einer Cola. Dazu sechs Power Bar-Riegel, drei Bananen und je eine halbe Pizza - so kommt man auf ca. 3.000 Kalorien mit Getränkepulver. Der Espresso doppio zum Finale war so gut wie lange nicht und die due mezzo litri di vino rosso sorgen dafür, dass wir vor der Rückfahrt noch gut, aber kurz schlafen. Ciao belli! Ciao nazione di bici!

E: What remains after 318 kilometers? Extreme loss of substance, despite consumption of 14 half-liter bottles and one coke. Add six power bars, three bananas and half of a pizza each – makes about 3000 calories including the energy drink packs. The double espresso on reaching our goal tasted better than ever, and before we head off on the return we have a short, but comfortablesleep following due mezzo litri di vino rosso. Ciao belli! be a pushbIker Erfolgreiche Experimente sind die, die kein Ende nehmen. Das Team vom Irschenberg hat im fünften Jahr seines Bestehens einen neuen Namen: maloja Pushbikers. Die Werte des Teams bleiben dieselben: den Radsport lieben, eine Plattform für U23- und junge Amateurfahrer sein, den Bahnradsport in Deutschland am Leben halten. Und ganz wichtig: das Ganze mit Style. In Anlehnung an den „Pushbike Song“ der australischen Band „The Mixture“ aus dem Jahr 1970 wurde der Name kreiert. In dem Lied wird deutlich, dass Radfahren nicht nur Transportmöglichkeit oder ein Sport ist - sondern Lebenseinstellung, Liebe & Style. Diese Emotionen wollen auch wir transportieren; ein weiterer Grund für beide Seiten, die Zusammenarbeit langfristig auszubauen, die vor knapp zehn Jahren begann, als Teamchef Christian Grasmann noch Einzelkämpfer war und wir gerade die erste Kollektion entwickelt haben. Zehn Fahrer gehen 2014 als maloja Pushbikers in die Saison. Vor allem bei Bahnrennen von Melbourne bis Öschelbronn, bei internationalen Sixdays, Weltcups und Weltmeisterschaften aber auch bei Straßenrennen von New York bis Rosenheim wollen sie ihre Botschaften mit Siegen verbreiten – und eines der weltweit besten Bahnteams bleiben. Sei auch Du ein Pushbiker! Dabei geht es nicht um eine Teamzugehörigkeit, sondern um eine Lebenseinstellung.

E: Successful ventures are those that do not come to an end. Now in its fifth year, the team from Irschenberg, Bavaria, has a new name - maloja Pushbikers. The values of the team remain the same: to love the sport, to provide a platform for young amateur cyclists, to keep track racing alive in Germany. And most importantly: to do all this with style. The team’s new name is inspired by the “Pushbike Song,“ released by the Australian band “The Mixture“ in 1970. The tune highlights that cycling is not solely a means of transportation or a sport but a way of life, a philosophy, a passion. This sentiment is shared by maloja – a further reason why the team is delighted to strengthen a partnership which began a decade ago, at a time when team leader Christian Grasmann was still a “lone rider“ and maloja a fledgling company. The alliance between team and sponsor has grown steadily to the point where many Maloja products are now being developed in collaboration with our riders. This year, ten riders will enter the 2014 racing season as maloja Pushbikers. It is their aspiration to remain one of the best racing teams in the world. mouNt TeN: Our roots, our courage to tread New paths An Werten festhalten und zugleich neue Wege gehen. Das haben wir uns als maloja zum Ziel gesetzt. In den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat sich an dieser Philosophie nichts geändert. In den Designs dagegen erfinden wir uns jedes Jahr neu. Die Sommerkollektion 2015 Mount Ten steht für unsere Wurzeln und den Mut zu Neuem gleichermaßen. Bei all den Veränderungen im Design gibt es in der Mount Ten-Kollektion auch eine Menge Kontinuität. Fasziniert hat uns das Thema Camouflage. Wir finden, dass es zu einem zeitgemäßen Berg wie dem Mount Ten dazugehört und nicht nur in der Streetwear beheimatet sein sollte. Für unseren Berg haben wir das Camouflage in die maloja-Welt übertragen. So entstand ein Berge-Camouflage für Männer und eins mit Blumen für die Frauen. Für Letzteres stand übrigens ein Campingstuhl aus den 60er Jahren Pate. E: We are fascinated by the camouflage theme and feel that it suits a contemporary mountain like Mount Ten, and should certainly not only feature on streetwear. We adapted the camouflage theme to our maloja world and developed a mountain-camouflage design for men and a flower-camouflage design for women. By the way, the latter design was inspired by a camping chair from the 1960s.

Jede Jacke trägt im Kragen auf einem Webband den Namen der Strickerin. E: Funtana is a product from a relief project for Armenians, supported by the German manufacturing company Grasegger. 40 hours of work and craftsmanship go into the production of just one jacket. The name of the knitter is sewn into the collarband of each jacket.
