Genau auf einem solchen Gipfel stehen wir. Wir haben unseren Mount Ten bestiegen. That’s exactly where we are now. We’ve climbed our tenth mountain aptly Gemeinsam mit Freunden haben wir in den vergangenen zehn maloja-Jahren den mal named Mount Ten. We have been on a journey the past ten years, accompanied steinigen, mal überraschenden, mal steileren, mal flacheren, auf jeden Fall immer by our many friends. At times this journey as been rocky, steep, full of surprisaufregenden Weg hinauf gemeistert. Und gemeinsam mit ihnen wollen wir weiter- es and other times level, but overall it has been wonderful and exciting. We plan marschieren. Nach einer kurzen Rast. on continuing along this path together, but before doing so we’ve taken the time for a short rest. hoW It begaN

maloja: UNsere Werte, uNser LebeNsgefühl uNd wIe vor zehn JahreN alles begaNN maloja: our values, our outlook oN lIfe aNd the Way everythiNg begaN teN years ago

maloja ist nicht einfach nur ein Name, es ist ein Lebensgefühl. Dafür, dass Du schöne Momente mit Freunden teilen sollst, damit sie perfekt werden. Dafür, dass Du nie Deine Neugierde aufs Leben verlieren darfst. Dafür, dass es nicht viel braucht, um Besonderes zu erleben – eben nur ein bisschen Mut, gewohnte Wege zu verlassen und Neues zu wagen. Für dieses maloja-Gefühl steht ein Erlebnis, das uns bis heute prägt. So hat alles angefangen … Es gibt nur dieses Foto. Im Internet haben wir’s entdeckt, dieses BilderbuchPowderfoto. Ein Snowboarder, wie er durch die Luft segelt, um ihn herum nichts als Pulverschnee und weiße Kuppen. Klein steht’s unter dem Bild: Maloja. Dort muss es entstanden sein. Gehört haben wir davon noch nie.

E: maloja is not just a name, it’s a way of life. It’s the feeling of wanting to share beautiful moments with friends thus making those moments even more perfect. The desire never to give up being curious about the many things life still has in store for you. The understanding that it doesn’t take much to discover special things but merely enough courage to leave the beaten path and take a risk on something new. This maloja feeling was discovered in one life changing experience that keeps us invigorated today. This is the way it all began. We had stumbled upon an image on the Internet, a simple image depicting a snowboarder flying through the air on a powder-laden day with sugarcoated mountaintops. Aside from this imagery there was a very small text that simply read: Maloja. We figured this must be the place where it had been taken. Stumped, we had never heard of this place before, but it’s mystic allure etched its way into our memories.

Trotzdem fahren wir hin. An unserem letzten Tag von einer Woche im Engadin, in diesem herausragenden Winter 2001. Bei mehr als einem halben Meter Neuschnee – und wir in St. Moritz mittendrin. Doch uns zieht es ins unbekannte Maloja. Den Ort, von dem wir nicht einmal wissen, ob man dort skifahren und snowboarden kann. The story goes on. The winter of 2001 was exceptional and we were enjoying So manche gute Entscheidung im Leben erschließt sich eben nicht sofort. Zum Glück ourselves in the Engadin Valley of the Swiss Alps. On the last day of our week war unsere Neugierde groß genug. stay we received more than half a meter of fresh snow, however we were in the middle of bustling St. Moritz hardly the place for fresh tracks. In the back of our minds we remembered the image of the snowboarder in the unknown place called Maloja, a place we were unsure of at that time if you could actually access to ski or snowboard. Many a good decision in life is not immediately disclosed as such. What luck we would be in for that day as we followed our curiosity deeper into the mountains.

Maloja liegt 17 Kilometer von St. Moritz entfernt. Tatsächlich bietet das verschlafene Örtchen perfektes Powder-Gelände – einen steilen Hang, von Föhren durchsetzt, einen weißen Puderzucker-Teppich, alles unverspurt. Nur – wo ist der Lift?

„Gut, dass Ihr da seid“, ruft uns der „Liftler“ in seinem Graubündner Dialekt entgegen. „Dann schalt ich doch mal an.“

Was wir dann an diesem Hang erleben, ist Geschichte. Geblieben ist das Bild vom unberührten Tiefschnee Positive Unruhe macht sich breit, als wir den Tellerlift zwischen tiefverschneiten Nadelbäumen, das Gefühl entdecken. Auf die erste Freude folgt Ernüchterung: von purer Lebenslust und in den Ohren noch unser Der Lift steht still! Aber wie wir da zweifelnd durch den Jubel, der über den Berg hallt. Ein perfekter Tag an Schnee in Richtung Hang stapfen, geht auf einmal die einem alten Tellerlift irgendwo im Oberengadin. Tür zum Lifthäuserl auf.

E: It turned out Maloja was located only 17km away from St. Moritz. And yes, the sleepy place offered perfect powder conditions, a steep grade, interspersed pine trees, a sugary white blanket of snow that covered everything and not a single track in sight. But was there a lift? How happy were we when we discovered the rope tow. The immediate onset of excitement was followed however by a sense of disillusionment. The lift on this day was not moving! What else to

do but start hiking the slope and as we did so a door began to creak open on a tiny shack which once open presented a lift operator. “Good to see you“ he called out in his deep local dialect. “Looks like it’s time to rev up the engine.“ What we experienced that day on the slope is history. The picture embossed in our memories is one of virgin snow, deep and soft amongst the pine trees, the feeling of pure joy for life and in our ears the cries of glee that echoed through the hills. A perfect day with an old rope tow somewhere in the Swiss Alps.

Maloja ist danach im Freundeskreis zu einem geflügelten Wort geworden, zum Inbegriff für etwas Gutes und Schönes. Hat das Essen gut geschmeckt, hat’s maloja geschmeckt. Wann immer ein Gipfel, ein Trail oder ein Moment schön war, war es maloja. Das Erlebnis am Tellerlift wurde auch zum Inbegriff dafür, dass es sich lohnt, eigene Wege zu gehen. Es braucht nicht viel, um einen perfekten Tag zu gestalten. Dazu gehören nur etwas Mut, Fantasie und gute Freunde. Als wir uns 2004 aufmachten, die Marke zu gründen und der Firma eine eigene Unternehmensphilosophie zu geben, konnten wir viele dieser Erkenntnisse unmittelbar einfließen lassen. Es war nur konsequent, der Marke diesen Namen zu geben. Das Lebensgefühl „maloja“ treibt uns an, damals wie heute.

E: Maloja soon became a coined phrase in our circle of friends, the equivalent of anything heartfelt, true and beautiful. If the food was good it tasted maloja. A peak, a trail or just a certain moment in time that felt good, it was maloja. The moment shared at that simple rope tow became our paradigm for going your own way. It doesn’t take much to create a perfect day, just some courage, imagination and good friends. When we started in 2004 to create the mission for our own brand we looked to the revelation we experienced on that fateful day in 2001. It seemed only right to name the brand maloja. For us life is simply "Maloja"! And Maloja continues to shape, inspire and direct us today.

rosI's mooNrIde Es gibt Geschichten, da muss man das Happy End vorwegnehmen – weil es einfach zu schön ist, um es ans Ende zu schieben. Deshalb gleich jetzt die frohe Botschaft: Rosi geht es prächtig. Mehr als acht Jahre war sie uns ein treuer Begleiter, hat so manchen maloja-Messestand bereichert oder die Hauptrolle einiger Outdoor-Events übernommen, bevor sie sich auf ihre letzte große Reise machte. Okay, sie ist ein Schluckspecht, stur, eitel, groß, dick und alt. Aber – sie ist auch ein Schmuckstück. Eine eigenwillige Dame eben, die man einfach lieben muss. Die Außergewöhnliches leistet – wenn sie es gerade für richtig und wichtig hält. Die auf den Straßen die Blicke auf sich zieht – wenn sie ihren Edelkörper mit acht Meter Länge und drei Meter Breite dann mal in Bewegung setzt. Abende könnte sie mit ihren Geschichten füllen – wenn sie nicht so viele für sich behalten würde. Und jetzt: Die amerikanische Oldtimer-Lady hat es sich auf der Insel La Palma bequem gemacht, sich bestens eingelebt und wird allseits bewundert von jedem Besucher, der den – inoffiziellen – CampingPlatz auf der Insel findet. Rosi's letzte Reise war gleichzeitig Ihre längste. Von Rimsting nach La Palma, 4.536 Kilometer in 14 Tagen. E: Rosi Facts: She drinks too much, is stubborn, vain, huge, fat, old, an absolute gem and a willful old lady whom you can’t help but love. She is capable of tremendous feats if and when she feels up to it. She really catches looks in the street when she decides to put her eight-meter long and three meter wide luxury body into gear. She could entertain you all evening with stories, if she didn’t insist on keeping them to herself. One story we would like to tell, in-part because we were there is about Rosi’s final journey from Rimsting, Bavaria to La Palma in the Canary Islands, a journey of 4,536 km covered in a fortnight. No other had the opportunity to get to know the stubborn old lady better than Maloja team rider Daniel Schäfer, her owner, occupant and confidante. This is a summary of Daniels life with Rosi and a testament to why you can’t help loving her. Sometimes the ending is the best part and this is why we decided to tell this story backwards. So keeping with the structure, we can tell you that Rosi is keeping well. The fat American old lady now calls the Island of La Palma home. Having adjusted well she is admired by those who pass by her where she now resides on a campsite yet to be deemed “official”.

sechseINhalb toNNeN eIgenwIllIgkeIt Gerade einmal eine halbe Stunde war die fünfköpfige Gruppe um Daniel, seine Freundin Biggi, Teamfahrerin Dana, den Fotografen Michael und Martin unterwegs, gerade einmal 30 Kilometer weit sind sie gekommen – und Rosi mag nicht mehr, springt nicht mehr an. Sie hängt eben an ihrer oberbayerischen Heimat. Ein paar nette Worte genügen – dieses Mal – um Rosi zu überzeugen: Sie macht sich auf die Reise. Doch soll das nur ein Vorgeschmack auf ihre sechseinhalb Tonnen Eigenwilligkeit sein.

Diejenigen, die Rosi schon sehr viel länger kennen und mit ihr das ein oder andere Abenteuer erlebten, haben Daniel ja gewarnt. Der aber hat sich in die 39 Jahre alte Dame verliebt. Dass sie – man munkelt’s – einst eine Größe im Rotlicht-Milieu war, im Sperrbezirk für Skandale gesorgt und alle brennenden Sehnsüchte gestillt hat: Das macht sie nur umso interessanter. Daniel will die Rosi einfach haben. Aus gutem Grund.

a stubborn sIx and a half toNs E: At barely 30 kilometers into this epic 4,000+ kilometer journey Rosi decided to throw in the towel, her engine quit and she refused to start. It appeared that she was too attached to her Bavarian home and wasn’t ready to move on. Some sweet talk was all that was needed and she agreed to start back up again. This first strike by Rosi was only a small taste of things to come. Those of us who had previous experiences with Rosi warned Daniel of the stubbornness of this six and a half ton lady. Like most that feast their eyes on this old lady, it was love at first sight for Daniel. He was her latest victim as she has been a known heartbreaker since 1975. From the first glance Daniel caught of her in the Maloja parking lot he knew they were meant to be together. Legend has it that Rosi was once a first lady of the Red Light district, where she developed a scandalous reputation for breaking hearts guided by desire, thus making her allure all the more powerful.

„Du musst fINdeN, wo’s raucht …" Startschwierigkeiten gibt’s auch auf der Reise nach La Palma ständig – in den denkbar ungünstigsten Momenten: zum Beispiel im Tunnel von Marseille – wo unsere Dicke zudem kaum durch die Öffnung passt und Alarm auslöst – oder auf einem steilen Pass in der Sierra Nevada – wo sie den spanischen Himmel kurzeitig ordentlich verdunkelt – oder direkt in der Auffahrt auf die Fähre – wo sie fast den Zeitplan durcheinanderbringt. Sie braucht eben immer mal wieder ihre Pause. Irgendwann aber hat Chefmechaniker Daniel, die Rosi durchschaut. “keep aN eye out for smoke …" E: In the most unlikely and quite possibly the worst moments, jump-starting was a regular call of duty on our travels to La Palma. Such an example took place in a tunnel in Marseille, when our fat old lady had barely fit through the tunnel opening, stalled and set off the tunnel alarm. Next was on the steep Sierra Nevada pass where once underway she darkened the Spanish sky with charcoal colored clouds of smoke and another memorable moment when she gave up on the loading ramp of the ferry boat. We can only gather that she needed a good good break down every so often. Daniel, also chief mechanic, who was soon coined “MacGyver” in his getting to know her was able to see right through the issues that troubled Rosi. His protocol was “Keep an eye out for smoke, find the fire, fix it.”

eIN gemütlIches heIm … Den Winter über verbringen der maloja-Teamfahrer und seine Freundin Biggi auf den Kanaren, genauer gesagt auf der Insel La Palma, dem Trail-Paradies für Mountainbiker. Dort bietet Daniel in seinem Moonrider-Camp geführte Biketouren an. Das Problem: Ihre Wohnung können die beiden im Sommer, den sie im Chiemgau verbringen, nicht behalten. Die Suche nach einer Bleibe geht also jeden Winter von vorne los. Und nie können sie sich richtig einleben. Bis Daniel die Rosi gefunden hat. „So was hab‘ ich mir schon immer gewünscht.“ Ein gemütliches Heim also in der zweiten Heimat. Irgendwie nur muss das Acht-Meter-Schmuckstück aus Blech, Rost, Metall und Farbe dorthin kommen. Nur wenige von uns haben daran geglaubt, dass sie es auf ihren eigenen vier Rädern schafft. Weil wir Rosi zu gut kannten. Auf einigen Messen hat sie uns als maloja-Bus seit 2006 begleitet – und immer wieder ihr störrisches Wesen gezeigt. Einmal sollte sie die Mannschaft von der malojaHeimat Rimsting nach Garmisch-Partenkirchen bringen – und hatte ganz offensichtlich nicht so viel Lust auf diesen Einsatz. Drei ADAC-Einsätze (den ersten nach drei Kilometern), viele nette und auch einige böse Worte braucht‘s. Dann läuft sie prima.

a cozy home … E: Daniel had to have Rosi not just for himself but to share Rosi with his girlfriend Biggi on their yearly winter pilgrimage to the Canary Island La Palma a trail paradise for mountain bikers. Daniel operates a guided tour company called Moonriders Camp, however the rent he and his girlfriend have had to pay in the months that he is not there is far too expensive to justify keeping it when he is back home in Bavaria. Due to these high costs they have to find a new place to stay every winter and have never had a chance to feel quite at home. That is until Daniel feasted his eyes on Rosi. “She has everything that I have always wanted to have.” A cozy home away from home. Daniels challenge was figuring out how to get the eight-meter gem comprised of rust, iron and layers of paint to La Palma. We were all too weary of this big undertaking, as we had gotten to know her all too well. In 2006 she was our tour bus for several of our trade shows and she managed to demonstrate her stubbornness at every opportunity. Looking back at one of those instances we recalled a time when she was to bring the Maloja team from Rimsting to Garmisch Partenkirchen and it seemed she really was not in the mood for this adventure. After three calls to the emergency road service (the first after only 3km), a fair amount of sweet talk and some choice words we we able to complete this small journey. mehr als eIN gebrauchsgegeNstaNd „Mensch, so ein Wohnmobil wollte ich schon immer mal haben“, sagen die Leute auf La Palma, wenn sie Rosi erblicken. Maloja-Teamfahrer Daniel Schäfer freilich sieht in ihr nicht einfach nur einen Gebrauchsgegenstand. Sie ist sein Zuhause. Zumindest wird sie’s bald, wenn er sie noch ein bisschen auf Vordermann gebracht hat. Und sie ist jetzt schon eine enge Vertraute geworden, mit der er wahrlich einiges erlebt hat. Denn die Fahrt bis zu ihrem Altersruhesitz auf den Kanaren verlief alles andere als reibungslos.

Not just a thINg E: You often hear “Wow, I always dreamt of having such a vehicle“, when people pass by or stop in to visit Rosi. Daniel of course doesn’t regard her as just a vehicle, a camper, or a thing; she is after all his home, or at least she will be as soon as he puts the finishing touches on her. Rosi is a loyal companion with whom Daniel has shared a lot of adventures. Their history is long, but most recently on her final adventure she managed to cause Daniel and several other Malojans quite a lot of grief as they piloted her to her final destination, a seniors home on the Canary Islands.

Nur haben halt nicht immer klare Spuren zum Problem geführt. Manchmal, da hat Rosi einfach gar kein Zeichen von sich gegeben. Kein Rauch, kein Stottern, kein Klappern, kein Garnichts. Sie blieb einfach stumm. Und das war das Schlimmste, der Tiefpunkt. Der kommt etwa 15 Kilometer vor der Überfahrt mit der Fähre im spanischen Cádiz.

E: Sometimes Daniel's protocol worked, other times it failed miserably. Rosi is a tricky girl and reading her was not always black and white. No smoke, no sputtering, no clanging, no nothing. She sometimes sat in silence and those moments were the worst and often the lowest points of the journey.

Gefeiert wird die Rosi bei ihrer Ankunft am Strand: Die Surfer lieben das amerikanische Schlachtschiff. Scheinbar gefällt ihr der Ruhm. Rosi bewegt sich keinen Meter mehr weg. Auf einer Reise, die geprägt ist von Hoffen und Bangen, von Betteln und Beten, die Dame möge die Strapazen durchstehen – da liegen die Nerven kurz vor dem wichtigen Ziel, der Fähre, blank. Keiner glaubt mehr dran. Ein letzter verzweifelter Startversuch. Und tatsächlich: Rosi schnurrt – beziehungsweise kracht und scheppert. Aber Hauptsache, es rührt sich was! One “silent treatment” happened at a beach about 15km outside the ferry terminal of Cádiz, Spain. Stopping in for a rest at the beach, Rosi attracted many new admirers as the

local surf community had fallen in love with her American warship type qualities. The attention seemed to go to her head and when ready to depart Rosi did not budge, not an inch. The nerves of Rosi’s occupants were stretched beyond their limits at this point in the journey as so many previous moments had been filled with hope, fear, cajoling and pleading that she make it to the end of this final tour of duty. All hope seemed to be devoid, but with one final attempt to resurrect the old lady a miracle took shape and she began to purr. More along the lines of rattle and other odd noises, but at that moment she was at least doing something.

fInally there!

Mit dem letzten Schnaufer schließlich läuft Rosi in ihrem Altersdomizil auf La Palma ein. Keinen Meter will sie sich mehr bewegen. Macht nichts – jetzt wird sie erst einmal von Daniel rundum gehegt und gepflegt. Türen, Fenster, Boiler, Dusche, Gasherd, die beiden Kühlschränke: Alles in dem geräumigen Heim will auf Vordermann gebracht werden. Und dann? Wer weiß. Wer weiß schon, wozu die Dame noch alles fähig ist – sofern sie die Lust dazu hat. Und dann unternimmt sie sicher noch einen kleinen La-Palma-Ausflug. Einfach, um sich bewundern zu lassen. Das liebt doch so eine amerikanische Lady aus dem Milieu.

E: On her last breath she rolled into her senior citizen domicile and this may very well be her final destination. Don’t worry; Daniel is taking good care of her as he is at her beck and call. Doors, windows, water heater, shower, gas oven and her two refrigerators all need to be maintained and polished regularly. With a little extra TLC who knows what she has in store next, maybe a little La Palma excursion is yet to come for fun or for admiration only time will tell, after all adventure is what keeps this classy American lady ticking.

Ein paar Sekunden. Nur ein paar Sekunden schneller – und Hans Reiter hätte sich seinen Traum erfüllt: Olympische Spiele. 1980. In Lake Placid. Doch die Sekunden fehlten. Wurscht, sagt er heute. „Wenn was zu Ende ist, muss man es abschließen.“ So sieht er’s mit 56 Jahren. Als junger Bursch hat er anders gedacht. Oft und jahrelang nach diesem einen entscheidenden Rennen mit den fehlenden Sekunden hat er sich gefragt, ob er vielleicht mehr hätte trainieren müssen. Alles, wirklich alles hat der kleine Hans ausprobiert. Aufgewachsen im Ortsteil Lohhäusl zwischen Traunstein und Siegsdorf, an der weißen Traun, war er mit den Nachbarskindern immer draußen unterwegs. „Du hast Dich ständig bewegt.“ Windsurfen – exotisch in den 1970ern –, Bergsteigen, Klettern, Skitouren gehören bis heute zu seiner Freizeit. Skirennen ist Hans gefahren. Fußball hat sowieso jeder gespielt und Langlaufen, das hat auch jeder gemacht. Dazu versuchte er sich in Nordischer Kombination und im Biathlon. Doch das Langlaufen ist als sein Sport übrig geblieben. Natürliche Auslese, hieß das Motto. „Im Biathlon hab‘ ich nix getroffen. Und beim Springen hatt‘ ich zu viel Schiss.“ Das akribische Training brachte ihm Bayerische und Deutsche Meistertitel ein. Der Höhepunkt: 1978, mit 20 Jahren, holt er die Bronzemedaille bei den JuniorenWeltmeisterschaften. Neun Sekunden fehlen zum Titel. Hans hat’s mit den knappen Entscheidungen. Aber er weiß: Mehr war nicht drin. „Jeder hat seine Leistungsgrenze.“ Bei ihm war sie eben ein paar Sekunden vor Olympia erreicht.

E: Only a few seconds faster and Hans Reiter would have reached his goal to represent his country at the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid. It was just a matter of seconds. “It doesn’t matter,“ he says today. “When it’s over, don’t dwell on it“ his words at age 56. As a young man he thought differently than he does today. For many years after that decisive qualifying race he often asked himself, if he had trained harder would he have gained those missing seconds. Growing up in the village Lohhäusl little Hans was into everything. He and his friends were always outdoors, everyday. Downhill running, soccer, windsurfing (an exotic sport in the 1970’s), mountain hiking/climbing, ski mountaineering were and are some of his favorite sports even today. Growing up at the foot of the mountains meant everyone was into cross country skiing. He took part in Nordic Combined and Biathlon, but resonated most with cross country skiing. “Natural selection” he says. “I was too much of a lousy shot for biathlon and ski jumping scared the shit out of me.” Meticulous training was the key to his achieving the Bavarian and German Championship titles. The peak of his career was in 1978 at the age of 20 when he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, finishing nine seconds short of first place. He has been prone to close finishes, but as he recalls, “There was no more to give. Everyone has a personal limit.” And in his case his personal limit resulted in finishing a few seconds short of making the Olympics.

Nach 13 Jahren Hochleistungssport, ist's 1986 an der Zeit, etwas Neues anzupacken: die Trainerkarriere beim Bayerischen Skiverband. Als Ziel winkt Olympia: „Wenn ich es schon nicht als Athlet schaffe, dann fahr' ich halt als Trainer hin.“ So hat sich das Hans überlegt. Doch es gibt einen weiteren Grund für den Schritt. Das Traineramt fasziniert Hans ebenso, wie ihn der Sport selbst begeistert hat. „Es gehörten ein enormes Engagement, Selbstdisziplin und eine riesige Motivation dazu.“

Olympia als Coach, der Traum hat sich damit erledigt. Vor allem aber geht er: „Weil es gut war.“ So einfach. Es wartet schließlich noch eine Vision.

An der Hochschule in Köln absolviert er nebenbei die Ausbildung zum Diplomtrainer nordisch. Und stellt mit seinen Mitstreitern die Verbandsstruktur auf den Kopf: Stützpunkte werden in Bayern installiert, Trainer für die professionelle Förderung vor Ort geschult. Athleten wie Tobias Angerer und Evi SachenbacherStehle hat Hans auf ihrem Weg nach oben gefördert.

Mit der Eröffnung vor über sechs Jahren erfüllt sich Reiter einen Jugendtraum. Im ersten Stock seines Cafés betreibt Reiter zudem einen maloja-Shop. Auch so eine Vision. Vor knapp zehn Jahren, kurz nach dem maloja-Start, hat er die Marke entdeckt. Er wollte etwas mit ihr auf die Beine stellen.

Eine, in der Zeit (oder gar Sekunden) endlich keine große Rolle mehr spielt. 2008 legt er die Armbanduhr ab – und seitdem nie wieder an. Für sein Café / Bar Weinmüller samt Kleinkunstbühne in Siegsdorf braucht er die nicht.

Irgendwie hat sie zu ihm gepasst, findet er: „Da gibt’s auch Visionen, Kreativität. Bei aller Passion: 2008 verabschiedet er sich aus dem Trainergeschäft. Warum? Und die malojas leben für das Draußen. Das tu‘ ich auch.“ So einfach. Unter anderem, weil es keine Perspektive mehr gibt für ihn. Zum Bundestrainer würde er es nicht mehr bringen, das ist klar.

E: In 1981, a year after his failed winter games attempt, Reiter left the sports association in Bad Reichenhall where he had in his words a “Truly remarkable time” with Fritz Fischer the biathlon double world champion and relay Olympic champion. Reiter had to stay true to his values, “I had to move on, and there is always something new ahead.” After leaving he decided to join the Kaolini Ski Club located in Upper Bavaria, which at that time was the only German club that supported high performance cross country skiing athletes. Peter Schlickenrieder, Olympic silver medalist in 2002 and Jochen Behle, successful national coach and world cup champion were trained at the same club. Reiter spent five years with the Kaolini Ski Club as an athlete where he competed in many international events, but in his words, “It was never enough. I wasn’t moving forward.”

colleagues to turn the crumbling structure of the sports organization upside down and employ new ideals. During this time he accompanied Tobias Angerer and Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle on their way to the top, however realizing that he would not be the next national coach and that his dream of being a part of the Olympics would also be over, Reiter makes the decision to stop coaching in 2008. The real reason for the change was “Because it was time.” As simple as that. Another dream was waiting to be realized.

In 1986 after thirteen years as a high-performance sport athlete it was again time for something new. Reiter decides to shift gears and began his career as coach of the Bavarian Ski Association. With one goal in mind and that was the Olympic Games. “If I wasn’t able to take part as an athlete, then I would make it as a coach.” That was Reiters motivation.

Opening the café six years ago, Reiter has fulfilled a childhood dream. A maloja shop is located on the top floor of Reiter’s café, yet another one of his dreams. Shortly after maloja was founded ten years ago, Hans discovered the brand and wanted to have something to do with maloja. To him its simple “maloja is about dreams and creativity and the malojans live for the outdoors just like I do.”

As a side project he enrolled in the University of Cologne and became a certified Nordic Sports Coach. His new certification enabled him to encourage his

Dreams determined by time and mere seconds were no longer important and in 2008 Reiter removes his wristwatch and has never put it back on. His new dream running his café and bar, which include a small theatre for musical performances does not require a wristwatch.

Der Tag startet um 6.15 Uhr mit – natürlich – einem ordentlichen Frühstück. Gleich neben dem Hotel schnallen die fünf Athleten ihre Ski an und marschieren, beziehungsweise laufen los: Die 3.774 Meter hohe Wildspitze ist ihr Ziel. Den letzten Anstieg bewältigen sie zweimal. Tagespensum: 2.500 bis 3.000 Höhenmeter. Das Mittagessen haben sich die fünf wahrlich verdient, ebenso den Mittagschlaf.

E: Each morning naturally starts with a hearty all you can eat breakfast at 6:15. After which, each athlete straps on their skis and marches, or rather runs off to the Wildspitze their 3.744 meter high goal. The last ascent is climbed twice making their overall daily stint between 2.500 – 3.000 altitude meters. Once they have completed their morning routine they have earned lunch and a nap to follow.

schINden für deN saIsoNhöhepuNkt Bis zu 300.000 Höhenmeter laufen und marschieren die Top Athleten der Skibergsteiger im Stechschritt bergauf – pro Saison. Verständlich wird das, schaut man sich einmal genauer an, was die jungen Männer da in so einem Neun-Tage-Trainingslager im Pitztal leisten: Zwischen 20.000 und 25.000 Höhenmeter bringt jeder nur im Aufstieg hinter sich. Mindestens sechsmal steht jeder auf der Wildspitze. Hinzu kommen noch ungezählte Lauf- oder Radlkilometer. Sie alle schinden sich für den Saisonhöhenpunkt: die Weltmeisterschaft in Verbier im Februar 2015. Ihr großes Ziel: eine Medaille mit der Staffel. maloja drückt euch fest die Daumen.

To put things in greater perspective, we will break down their performance during their nine days at the training camp in Pitztal: The athletes tackle between 20.000 and 25.000 altitude meters on the climb alone as each must reach the Wildspitze at least six times. In Addition each athlete completes countless kilometers of training through running and cycling. They sweat to achieve their best performance at the peak of the season, which would be the world championship, February 2015 in Verbier. The goal is a medal in the relay race and our fingers are crossed for them.

Essen: Das spielt beim Trainingslager der Deutschen Nationalmannschaft der Skibergsteiger eine entscheidende Rolle. Morgens, mittags und abends schlagen die jungen Burschen um Team Manager und Betreuer Bernhard Bliemsrieder ordentlich zu. So ein Buffet räumen Seppi Rottmoser, Toni Palzer, Simon Kurz, Cornelius Unger und Toni Lautenbacher leicht ab. 5.000 Kilokalorien kommen da pro Tag und pro Mann schon mal zusammen. Ja, so ein Trainingslager auf dem Gletscher im Pitztal macht hungrig.

E: Food is an important issue at the training camp of the German National Ski Mountaineering Team. Morning, noon and night the young lads under the guidance of team manager and coach Bernhard Bliemsrieder chow down more than a plateful. Team members, Seppi Rottmoser, Toni Palzer, Simon Kurz, Cornelius Unger and Toni Lautenbacher have no problem finishing off the last crumbs of the buffet. 5.000 calories per day/man is easily achieved as a training camp on the Pitztal glacier can certainly create an appetite.

An Werten festhalten und zugleich neue Wege gehen. Das haben wir uns als maloja zum Ziel gesetzt. In den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat sich an dieser Philosophie nichts geändert. In den Designs dagegen erfinden wir uns jedes Jahr neu. Die Winterkollektion Mount Ten 2015/16 steht für unsere Wurzeln und den Mut zu Neuem gleichermaßen.

E: Stay true to your values and still have the courage to travel new roads, this is what we have defined as our mission for maloja and it has remained unchanged for the past ten years. Redefining our collection each year best represents our testament to our philosophy. The Mount Ten 2015/2016 collection exemplifies our roots and our courage in moving things into the future.

So sehr die Designsprache eine hohe Bedeutung in jeder unserer Kollektionen hat, so steht doch der funktionale Anspruch an erster Stelle. Inzwischen kümmert sich ein 10-köpfiges Team in Zusammenarbeit mit den Designern darum, dass für den Sport die bestmögliche Funktion zur Verfügung steht. Das beginnt beim Entwickeln und Sourcen der richtigen Funktionsmaterialien über die Integration vieler technischer, auf den jeweiligen Sport abgestimmten Details, bis hin zur Ausarbeitung des optimalen Schnitts. Alles muss passen, mehrfach getestet und immer wieder verbessert werden. Eines der Ergebnisse daraus ist der neu entwickelte, zweiteilige Skitouren-Rennanzug. Jedes Detail haben wir in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Nationalmannschaft der Deutschen Skibergsteiger entwickelt.

Design is a very important aspect for all of our collections in which we invest heavily, but most importantly is the technical spec’ing and functionality of the product. A team of ten at maloja is responsible for working closely with our designers to ensure optimal functionality in sport for all products. The process starts with the development and sourcing of specific fabrics and materials, followed by the included integration of countless technical details specific to each sports discipline that leads to developing the best cut. Every detail must have a purpose and is tested over and over again making for constant improvements.

E: Maloja's 3-Layer Mountain Shell is an innovative high-tech material composition, which under the harshest conditions remains flexible, 100% waterproof and extremely breathable. Our goal in creating a proprietary technical garment was met through the combination of a stretch fabric comprised of a thin soft membrane that offers an amazing 20.000 mm water column and a moisture vapour permeability of 20.000 g/m2/24 h. The third outer garment-Layer is comprised of a thin and very lightweight soft to touch fabric that is not only extremely comfortable but completely protects the inner membrane. The addition of the DWR finish is the first line of defence against dirt and water, further allowing the membrane to function at its best. Camouflage of flowers aNd mouNtaINs Fasziniert hat uns das Thema Camouflage. Wir finden, dass es zu einem zeitgemäßen Berg wie dem Mount Ten dazugehört und nicht nur in der Streetwear beheimatet sein sollte. Für unseren Berg haben wir das Camouflage in die maloja-Welt übertragen. So entstand ein Blumen-Camouflage für Frauen und Mädels. Dafür stand übrigens ein Campingstuhl aus den 60er Jahren Pate. E: Mesmerized by the trends in camouflage streetwear we found inspiration in applying mountain aesthetics to breath new life into a tired design. In honor of our Mount Ten collection our interpretation of camouflage was through the use of flowers, which can be found throughout the women’s collection. Coincidentally a camping chair straight out of the sixties was the template for our Mount Ten Camo.
