MAKING MALVERNIANS

Welcome from the Headmaster

Welcome to the first edition of Making Malvernians, a regular newsletter which aims to share the exceptional achievements of our pupils across the global Malvern College Family of Schools. In the past we have featured the accomplishments and careers of our alumni after their time at Malvern College but of course, a Malvern education is impactful from the moment a pupil joins one of our schools. Our philosophy is very much based around a holistic approach to education with a common delivery throughout all our schools, so it is no surprise to see outstanding levels of performance from Malvernians across a wide range of academic, co-curricular and other activities, both on and off campus.

Whilst our pupils achieve every day in a variety of different ways, we are naturally delighted when we hear of attainment, selection, or awards at national and even international level.

Making the Cut

Arianna L, from Malvern College

Hong Kong (L6), has continued to reach the highest pinnacles of the junior golf world. Following a summer of intense training and competition in the US Girls’ Junior and US Women’s Amateur Championships she secured top finishes in multiple events and together with her Hong Kong teammate, Sophie Han, Arianna led Hong Kong to win the Team Championship at the Junior World Cup well and truly putting Hong Kong Golf on the world stage. It is a latest in a long line of successes for Arianna who has already won the FCG Callaway World Championships and both the Singapore and Hong Kong Junior Masters in 2022. The LPGA surely awaits…

Making Malvernians is intended as a celebration of these achievements and an illustration of the Malvern Qualities in action.

Congratulations to all the pupils featured in this first edition and to the teachers, coaches and parents who have all played significant roles in their achievements. We very much look forward to hearing about their future successes.

Economic Excellence

Budding economist Clancy L from Malvern College Qingdao won the Individual Gold Award at the China National Economic Challenge (NEC 2023) going one better than his Silver Award in 2022. The NEC is organized by US based Council for Economic Education and aims to raise the critical thinking and problem solving skills of students in the fields of politics, business and finance. Since it was introduced to China in 2016, the NEC has involved 300 schools and 15,000 students. These awards go alongside the gold and silver individual awards he also won in the Critical Thinking category!

International Recognition for Malvern Cricketers

Malvern College has a long tradition of nurturing the talents of first class cricketers (including current professionals Jack Haynes and Tom Kohler-Cadmore) so we are delighted to introduce our latest two prodigees, JT L (Malvern College UK) and Abubakr (Malvern College Hong Kong) who have recently been selected to play for their respective countries. Abubakr was selected to represent the Hong Kong Under 16 National Cricket Team as they competed against teams from Singapore, Indonesia and the Maldives in the ACC East Zone Under 16 Cup hosted in Malaysia. JT meanwhile was recently selected for the England U19 Cricket Youth squad to play in Quadrangular Series and played in Vijawada, India during November 2023, a tournament that also featured Bangladesh. JT also made his ‘List A’ debut for Somerset this summer participating in 3 Metro Bank One Day Cup group matches. Look out for those names in the IPL one day!

It has been a remarkable year of success for our team of gymnasts at Malvern College Egypt with several of the team achieving medal success at both Cairo Regional and Egyptian National Championships. Top of the list of performers have been Twana M and Farida S who both secured the age group Gold Medals in their respective Rhythmic Gymnastics categories, Fatima EZ achieved age group Gold Medals in Artistic Gymnastics events at the National Championships. Fatima was also ranked in the Top 10 overall nationally. These achievements follow in a long line of success for Malvern College Egypt gymnasts and are testament to the incredible dedication of these athletes and their coaches to reach this level and great examples of the Malvern Qualities in action. We look forward to tracking their future careers.

The Art of Performing

Libby J, currently in the Lower Sixth at Malvern College UK has been selected for the prestigious National Youth Theatre (NYT) following workshops and auditions in Bristol. Only 500 from 6,000 screened applicants are selected for the Acting Course at the NYT, an institution which lists Dame Helen Mirren, Daniel Day-Lewis and Orlando Bloom amongst its alumni. Libby has been a regular on the Rogers Theatre stage including playing the role of Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’.

On the other side of the world, Charlotte from Malvern College Hong Kong placed an impressive second in the ‘Impromptu Jazz’ Under 16s category whilst representing her country in Auckland, New Zealand at the Northern School of Performing Arts annual international competition.

Putting Malvern in the Picture

Malvern College UK sixth-former Mwangi M won the BSA Supporting Excellence Awards 2023 for Best New Artwork for his piece called ‘Malvern Displaced.’ Students were asked to reflect on the 3 times that students at the college have been displaced since its founding in 1865 (twice for World Wars and once for Covid).

Mwangi left his home in Kenya in 2021 to study in the UK and was soon able to use his talent for art as a powerful means of storytelling. He has already been offered a place in the Foundation Programme at the prestigious Central St Martin’s School of Art (part of the University of Arts London) so as to develop his skills in a range of fine art disciplines.

Eloise S from Malvern College Qingdao has retained her title as National Champion in the field of Calligraphy winning the 3rd annual Yandetang ‘Hard Pen’ competition. Eloise is a remarkable talent across multiple disciplines having also won a string of English Speech, Fashion and Fine Arts competitions at both provincial and national level.

Scientific Breakthroughs

Science is very much part of Malvern College’s DNA with a string of Nobel Prize Winners and even the UK Chief Medical Officer, Professor Sir Chris Whitty amongst our noted alumni. It is no surprise to see our current cohort of young scientists continuing to pioneer beyond the classroom:

Cora Z, from Malvern College Hong Kong won the Silver Award at the 2023 YP Hong Kong Science Fair for her wearable device called ‘Myo’ which is designed helps to alleviate upper arm pain following vaccinations. Over three days, Cora explained her prototype to delegates at the exhibition which attracts 20,000 visitors including high-ranking political figures. She was also interviewed by several media outlets and offered an internship with HK-based Rice Robotics. Cora received a total of 13,000 HKD for her efforts, and an eye-catching trophy. There was also a teacher leadership award of 4,000 HKD and the Malvern Design department will receive a 75,000 HKD development award.

Also from Malvern College Qingdao, Amanda X was part of the China Team which placed second at the International Space Settlement Design Competition. This event requires high school students to simulate the experience of working on an aerospace design team in creating a proposal for the establishment of a colony on another world. Amanda too is no stranger to accumulating academic recognition having also secured a Gold award In the Australian national chemistry competition.

Meanwhile, Molly L from Malvern College Qingdao has received an individual Gold Award at the 2023 iGEM (International Genetic Engineering Machine) design competition which challenges students to ‘push the boundaries’ of synthetic biology to tackle the issues facing the world. For the event students are required to build and test their own designs using interchangeable biological parts! This is the latest in a long list of awards for Molly in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics Olympiads and competitions from the UK, Australia and the United States.
