Malvern Announces the Formation of the St. Ambrose Team
Middle School Living Rosary Service
The 6th and 7th grade Middle School students participated in a Living Rosary with special guests in attendance on May 18. This marks the first time since the pandemic that this tradition has happened in the Middle School.
During the Living Rosary service, students form the shape of a rosary in the Chapel and take turns reciting the decades of the rosary. The prayer service was offered for the people of Ukraine.
Thank you to our Middle School students and Mr. John Hoey for continuing this great tradition! mp

Malvern Prep Unveils St. Ambrose Team
In mid-June, Head of School, Mr. Patrick Sillup announced the formation of the St. Ambrose Team at Malvern Prep. This newly formed, dedicated group of leaders is responsible for the entire student experience at Malvern Prep. Evolving out of a need to support students both inside and outside of the classroom, the St. Ambrose Team will ensure a more student-centered experience as well as natural communication pathways among faculty members, coaches, moderators, and counselors - ensuring that all students are truly known at Malvern Prep. “We’re really looking to build and strengthen the partnership between our students, their families, and the St. Ambrose Team. We want to learn more about the needs of our students and our families, but we also want our families to learn from this partnership as well and find opportunities to become involved,” said Mr. Ron Algeo ‘87 P‘15, Associate Head of School.
The St. Ambrose Team, led by Mr. Ron Algeo, is comprised of individuals whose experience and expertise will ensure that all areas of the student experience are met for each student in our care. Their key charge will be to ensure that the whole student is educated in mind, body, and spirit. This group will work closely with each other, their colleagues, and our students. “Our students have said to us that the thing they value most is their connections with peers, friends, faculty, and staff. The St. Ambrose Team will allow us to make these connections for students in a really authentic way,” said Algeo. He continued, “This team will really help to mentor other leaders just as St. Ambrose was a friend, mentor, and leader to St. Augustine.”

[Why St. Ambrose? St. Ambrose was the bishop of Milan in the early 4th century and is remembered as the teacher who converted and baptized Malvern’s Patron Saint, St. Augustine. Just as St. Ambrose inspired St. Augustine to become a leader of the Church, the St. Ambrose Team hopes to draw out the natural leadership ability in all of our students through character development, inclusion in ]activities and athletics, counseling, and academic endeavors.
Malvern Prep Receives Historic Financial Gifts
In April 2022 Malvern Prep announced the receipt of a $6 million donation from past parent and Trustee Emeriti Vic Maggitti P‘02 GP‘13‘15‘17 TE. To celebrate this historic gift and to acknowledge and thank the Maggitti family, Malvern held a rededication ceremony of the St. Augustine Sculpture on Tuesday, April 5. The iconic sculpture had been a gift from the Maggitti family 20 years ago and greets everyone who enters Malvern Prep’s campus.
Following the ceremony, the school hosted a luncheon for the Maggitti Family, Malvern’s Board of Trustees, and special guests to celebrate this extraordinary gift.
“Malvern Prep holds a special place in my heart for what it has done for my son, grandsons, and countless other young men,” said Maggitti. “My time as a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman is something I am extremely proud of because of the mission that Malvern carries out on a daily basis to mold young men into men of faith, character, and service. My hope is that this gift will have a lasting impact on many students in the future as Malvern continues to be a leading educational institution deeply rooted in Augustinian values.”
The gift will be used to construct the Vic Maggitti Pavilion which will serve as a center for college counseling, learning support, and administration on Malvern Prep’s Campus. The need for a dedicated facility for counseling was determined by a Campus Master Plan evaluation process. Set prominently between Tolentine Hall and Stewart Hall, it will have a central location on campus facing the academic quad making it easily accessible, allowing students to experience a sense of ease and comfort when seeking to access this very important support structure. Construction for Maggitti Pavilion will begin in 2023.
At the time, Maggitti’s gift was the largest single donation the school has received in its 180-year history. However, just two months later, on June 9, Malvern Prep announced that it has received a gift from The Howley Foundation in the amount of $20.25 million. The Howley gift will provide for a variety of needs at Malvern Prep. Most especially, it will support 40 students with annual scholarships who would otherwise not be able to achieve a Malvern Prep education.
Malvern Prep Receives Historic Financial Gifts
Nick Howley III said, “Malvern has served our family well for multiple generations. This gift will support and expand the Middle School and allow 32 students in the Upper School and 8 Middle School students with limited means the opportunity to attend Malvern and participate in the strong academic and character formation that the school provides.”
Nick Howley, Jr., who passed away in 2000, served Malvern Prep as a trustee and Chair from 1974 to 1980. His sons Dan ‘71, Andy ‘72, Tom ‘74, and Mark ‘78 are all Malvern Prep graduates. During his leadership at Malvern, Nick Howley Jr. was instrumental in the creation of the Middle School. To honor his commitment and impact on Malvern Prep, the Middle School program at Malvern will officially be named the W. Nicholas Howley, Jr. Middle School during a ceremony in the fall of 2022.
“Our father spent a lot of time and energy helping Malvern through some tough times in the 70s and 80s, including the founding of the Middle School. This is something the four Howley boys who attended Malvern, and the other members of our family have taken quiet pride in over the years. Now, more than 20 years after his death, we are delighted that the opportunity has come up to give broader recognition to his work, and the satisfaction we all feel for the school Malvern has become and will be going forward,” shared Andy Howley, a member of The Howley Foundation board and a 1972 graduate of Malvern Prep. He continued, “My brothers Dan, Tom, Mark, and I all graduated from Malvern, and feel great pride in our father’s work for Malvern, particularly the Middle School. We’re excited that this gift will honor his achievements.”
In addition to scholarship support, a portion of this transformational gift will be used to enhance the physical plant of campus in the construction of two new turf fields and a student experience center which will consist of team rooms, a fitness area, academic and classroom space, and offices for staff and administration.
Construction for the turf fields and Student Experience Center is expected to begin in late 2023/early 2024. mp
