C
os’è l’estate? Ce lo siamo chiesti prima di iniziare questo nuovo numero. Ci sono venute in mente molte cose: luce, nuove energie, le serate in compagnia. Per la designer Claudia Kozub (trovate la sua intervista a pagina 30), l’estate è sabbia bianca, palme, conchiglie sotto i piedi. Tutti elementi che si ritrovano nei suoi interni, mix boho-chic di scandinavo ed etnico. L’estate è anche abbandonarsi alla fantasia e al sogno per questo presentiamo due artiste (Alisanna a pagina 8 e Sara Stefanini a pag 40) che con le loro creazioni impersonificano mondi onirici. Sole, acqua, colore, cos’è l’estate altrimenti? Abbiamo immaginato, allora, di rendere l’outdoor il luogo più accogliente della casa (a pagina 64) e di proporvi tre cocktail superlativi per un party a bordo piscina (p. 68).
W
hat is summer? We have been wondering about it before working on this new issue. Many things came up to our minds: light, new energies, evenings in the company of friends. According to the designer Claudia Kozub (her interview is at page 30), summer is white sand, palm trees, shells below her feet. All the elements can be found in her interiors, a bohochic mix of Scandinavian and Ethnic style. Summer is also loosing yourself to fantasy and dream, that’s why we review the work of two artists (Alisanna, at page 8, and Sara Stefanini, at page 40) who portrait personal and dreamlike worlds with their creations. Sun, water, color, what else can summer be? We imagined, then, to make outdoor the most comfortable place of the house (page 64) and recommended three excellent cocktails for a poolside party. Le radici dell’estetica o, per meglio dire, della poetica di Alisanna sono chiaramente nell’illustrazione: le sue ceramiche e le sue opere in fil di ferro sono prima di tutto (di)segno e racconto. Annalisa Benvenuti, the creative hearth of Alisanna, draws fully from a poetic and dreamlike interior worlds, to put on stage her personal and delicate reality. A reality made of little birds houses, of shapes and stories twisted in burnt iron wire, of illustrated evocation. The esthetic roots, or better the poetic roots of Alisanna are clearly in the figure: the ceramics and the works in iron wire are drawings and tales in the first place. Quite delicate and graceful like good dreams, Alisanna creations immerse in the world, illuminating house corners, adorning walls, making tables beautiful.

Con un lungo lavoro, il soffitto a travi è stato dipinto di bianco per dare luce all’ambiente
After a long restoration process, the beamed ceiling has been painted white to light the space around
Siamo nel cuore elegante e signorile di Modena, in un palazzo dei primi del Novecento caratterizzato da una storia affascinante e strettamente legata alla città. Il palazzo è, infatti, appartenuto al Maestro Pavarotti al quale si deve l’ultima ristrutturazione prima che la proprietà venisse acquistata e trasformata nel b&b “QuartoPiano” cli ck here da Antonio e Alessandro. Patchouli ed essenze mediterranee e una palette di legni sbiancati e colori vanigliati ci accolgono nella zona giorno: “un’area che ha richiesto ingegnosi interventi architettonici” spiega Antonio. La stanza è arredata con un divano di fine Ottocento tappezzato di lino e shabbato, un camino e una libreria creata su misura. Lungo il corridoio si dispiega una serie di oggetti e arredi d’epoca recuperati con passione e creatività dai padroni di casa: una fila di sedie da cinema, vecchie cornici, fotografie, spartiti e giornali d’antan. “Quasi tutto proviene dalle nostre perlustrazioni per mercatini francesi, in particolare da quello di Isle sur la Sorgue”, racconta Antonio.

We are in the elegant heart and distinguished heart of Modena, in a palace dating back to the beginning of last century, marked by a fascinating story intimately linked to that of the city. In fact, the palace was owned by Maestro Pavarotti, the famous opera singer, to which we owed the last restoration before the property was bought by Alessandro and Antonio and c turned into the current “QuartoPiano b&b”. Patchouli and Mediterranean essences and a selection of bleached and vanilla colours are welcoming us in the living room: “an area that has demanded major engineering architectural interventions” explains us Antonio, conceived as a sober house living room. The room is furnished with a latenineteenth century sandblasted sofa upholstered with linen, a chimney and a custom-made library.

Along the corridor is displayed a serie of vintage objects and pieces of furniture, salvaged and amassed with creativity and passion by the owners: a line of cinema chairs, old frames, photographs, musical scores and vintage newspapers. “Almost everything comes from our wanderings in French vintage markets, in particular that of Isle sur la Sorgue”, tells us Antonio. They originate from Provence the portal serving as “head”, the series of suitcases serving as nightstands and the cupboard thinly veiled by a curtain in the “Athlete” bedroom. It may be thanks to the fragrances, or to the various objects stemming from the life tastes, passions and origins of the two house owners, or maybe thanks to their ability to recraft the past and mould it again into something new, but the result is that the QuartoPiano air feels like home. In particular, in the kitchen, tailor-made by the Marchi Group, unexpectedly situated in the upper floor, the mixture between creative recycling and artisan skills stunningly blends. From the curtains, made out old sacks used by the Swiss army, to the glasses’ collection, passing to the wrought iron-legs table to the lighting (Muselli e Viabizzuno), everything sounds like pure poetry. he

Provengono dalla Provenza il portale che fa da testata, la serie di valigie usata a mò di comodino, l’armadio velato da delicate cortine nella camera da letto “Atleta”. Saranno i profumi, saranno i numerosi oggetti riconducibili alla vita, alle passioni e alle origini dei padroni di casa, sarà la loro capacità a reinventarsi il passato… he re Certo è che tutto sa di casa. Specie nella cucina, progettata su misura da Marchi Group che si trova sorprendentemente al piano di sopra. Nella cucina il mix di recupero creativo e artigianalità è superlativo. Dalle tendine fatte con vecchi sacchi dell’esercito svizzero alla collezione di vetri, dal tavolo realizzato con antiche gambe in ferro battuto fino alle illuminazioni (Muselli e Viabizzuno), tutto è declinato come pura poesia.

Seduced by many different styles, Claudia and Neel created their own new one by melting ethnic, organic and Scandinavian minimalism. They choosed it for their house, then for their brand Indie Home Collective. In the following interview, Claudia tells us the secrets and the tools on which the sophisticated and peaceful atmosphere of their brand is based 31
Cos’è l’estate per te? E come la trasporti negli interni che curi? L’estate è spiaggia, sabbia bianca, palme, conchiglie sotto i piedi. Mi piace stare vicino all’oceano, consumare pasti leggeri all’aperto con famiglia e amici. Cerco di portare una brezza estiva ai miei interni tutto l’anno usando grandi foglie e succulente. La nostra casa, così come i nostri negozi, ha i pavimenti bianchi, il che aumenta la sensazione di freschezza e estate. Anche lasciar bruciare una candela profumata al cocco aiuta a creare la giusta atmosfera.

What does summer look like to you? And how do you bring a summer feeling into your interior styling? Summer to me is the beach. White sand, palm trees, crunchy shells under my feet. I love being close to the ocean, and eating simple meals outdoors with family and friends. I try to bring summer into my living spaces/home/stores all year round, by using large fresh foliage and cacti. Our house and stores have white walls and floors so even on a gloomy day it feels bright. Burning a beautiful coconut scented candle always feels like summer.

Lo stile di Indie Home Collective si cela nel mix and match di mobili e oggetti provenienti da tutto il mondo. In particolare ci ispirano i paesi dal mood naturale e terroso come l’India, il Marocco, il Messico, l’Indonesia.

What are your inspiration sources? Travel and researching different countries are our main source of inspiration. The Indie Home Collective look and feel is very much about mixing furniture and objects from all over the world. Countries that inspire us the most and have the most influence on our look are usually places with an organic earthy feel to them. Such as India, Morocco, Mexico, Indonesia. Whenever we travel to any country we try to stay as close to a beach/ocean as possible.
Lo stile di Indie Home Collective si riversa anche nella vostra casa? Sì. In effetti, è proprio dal look dei nostri interni che è nato il brand. Ho sempre amato diversi stili (da quello marocchino a quello balinese, da quello italiano a quello africano, dall’indiano allo scandinavo) e non potendone scegliere uno in particolare, ho mescolato tutto ciò che mi affascinava nei miei interni. Quest’eclettico mélange di stili è in essenza anche Indie Home Collective. Come è iniziato tutto? Ho iniziato a notare che in giro mancavano del tutto negozi con oggetti, mobili e mix come i nostri. In Nuova Zelanda non riuscivamo a trovare ciò che ci piaceva. Poi, un bel giorno, Neel mi dice: “apriamolo noi un negozio”!
Do you have the same style of your stores also at home? Yes, our home has the same Indie Living style as our stores. That is how our brands look initially came to life. Because I liked so many different styles I could never choose just one look for the house. I loved Turkish bath houses for their beautiful mosaic tiles and tasseled towels. Morocco for their silver light pendents & tea pots, plastered exteriors, roses and leather poufs. Balinese, Islamic and Italian gardens/landscaping. Tribal black stone and wooden pieces from Africa and India. Clean minimal lines and cacti from Palm Springs. A modern clean aesthetic from Scandinavia… I then decided to mix all these styles up. And that is very much the Indie Home Collective style. What was your starting point when you conceived Indie Home Collective? The starting point for our first store was after I noticed there were no stores that displayed a collection that we now have. I was seeing some really amazing images come up on Pinterest with some beautiful furniture and accessories and I couldn’t find them in New Zealand to use for my editorial styling work. One day Neel said ‘lets open a store’ and thats how it all began.

Dove e come reperite gli arredi che vendete? Principalmente dai viaggi. Visitiamo fiere oltreoceano. Alcuni giovani designer ci propongono le loro realizzazioni (sostenibili) e inoltre lavoriamo fianco a fianco di artigiani locali per produrre una nostra linea. Qual è il tuo pezzo d’arredo preferito e perché? La mia poltrona Barcelona sulla quale tengo sempre un plaid turco. La uso quotidianamente per prendervi una tazza di tè verde, per meditare o per coccolare uno dei nostri cani. Cosa consiglieresti a chi vuole approcciarsi allo stile indie, eclettico e organico? Attenersi ad una palette semplice e coerente, mescolare oggetti interessanti, sovrapporre texture, inserire nel decor foglie e piante per aggiungere vitalità e organicità.

How and where (fairs, travels‌) do you choose brands and furniture for your store? As mentioned before we travel to many different countries for both inspiration and buying. We also attend fairs overseas and now as our brand is growing and we are getting an international following we get approached by many amazing brands and creatives to stock their products. Where ever possible it is important to us to choose companies/brands that produce products that are ethically made and out of sustainable materials. We also develop some of our own products locally, working with amazing creatives and talented manufacturers here in New Zealand. What is your favorite (and must have) piece of furniture and why? At home its our old Barcelona chair which I always have a turkish throw on. I use this chair everyday. Sometimes its while I’m having my morning cup of green tea, meditation or evenings where one of my dogs squeezes on for a cuddle.

What advise would you give to those who want to get started with this eclectic/ organic/scandinavian style? Keep your colour palette simple and mix up lots of interesting pieces you love with plenty of texture. Add foliage and house plants for colour and a living element.

L’immaginario fantastico di Sara Stefanini, artista del ferro e scultrice del vintage Può il ferro essere forgiato in poesia? Sì a guardare le opere di Sara Stefanini. Con il suo stile rustico e naturale Sara ha dato forma a oggetti che hanno il sapore delle fiabe della nonna e il fascino di un cielo stellato. Da dove nasce l’emozione creata dal fil di ferro? Sì dalle mani e dagli intrecci, ma anche da un andare per contrasti e analogie tipico di certi artisti: animali esotici si trovano accanto a quelli dell’aia e oggetti simbolo dell’epoca moderna accanto ai cestini di una volta.
The imaginary unconscious of Sara Stefanini, artist of the iron and sculptor of the vintage Can iron be forged in poetry? Yes, if you look at Sara Stefanini’s works. Through her rustic and natural style Sara gave shape to objects that recalls old grandmother’s tales and the charm of a starring sky. Where does the emotion created by the iron wire comes from? From hands and twists, of course, but also from the contrast and similarity approach typical of certain artists: exotic animals together with those of the farm, symbols of the modern age close to old fashioned baskets.

Cucumber Mojito Ingredienti 50 ml di rum bianco 7-8 foglie di menta 10 fette sottili di cetriolo 1/2 lime 2 cucchiaini di zucchero di canna bianco ghiaccio soda Preparazione Massaggiate e tagliate il lime a spicchi. Una volta estratto il succo, aggiungete il ghiaccio e il restante cetriolo. Aggiungete il rum e riempite il bicchiere con la soda. Mescolate con un cucchiaino lungo e servite.

Cucumber Mojito Ingredients 50 ml white rum 7-8 mint leaves 10 thin slices of cucumber 1/2 lime 2 teaspoon of white cane sugar ice soda Preparation Slice the lime. Put it into a cocktail glass with washed mint leaves, sugar, 3-4 cucumber slices and start mashing. Once you get the juice, add ice and the rest of the cucumber. Add rum and fill the glass up with soda. Mix with a long teaspoon and serve.

Gazpacho di cocomero Ingredienti 200 g di cocomero 300 g di pomodoro (cuori di bue) pomodorini miniplum per decorare 1 cetriolo 1 scalogno 100 g di feta 1 cucchiaio di aceto di mele qualche goccia di salsa Worcester olio extravergine d’oliva sale Preparazione Pulite tutti gli ingredienti e tagliateli a pezzetti, togliendo i semi. Lasciate da parte poco cetriolo e pomodoro per le decorazioni. Nel boccale di un frullatore unite: il cocomero, i pomodori e il cetriolo e lo scalogno. Azionate e aggiungete man mano l’olio a filo. Salate, aggiungete la salsa, l’aceto e mescolate ancora. Assaggiate e ed eventualmente apportate ulteriori aggiunte. Per servire, passate il bordo superiore del bicchiere in acqua e poi nel sale, aggiungete un pomodorino. Riempite i bicchieri con il gazpacho, decorate con cetriolo, pomodoro e briciole di feta. Servite il gazpacho con dei cucchiaini per mangiare la decorazione, ma il resto del gazpacho può essere agevolmente bevuto.

Watermelon Gazpacho
Ingredients 200 gm watermelon 300 gm tomato (cuori di bue) little miniplum tomatoes for garnish 1 cucumber 1 shallot 100 gm feta cheese 1 spoon apple vinegar a few drops Worcester sauce extra virgin olive oil salt
Preparation Clean all the ingredients and chop them into small pieces, taking off the seeds.
Leave apart a few pieces of cucumber and tomato for garnish. In the tankard of the mixer put together watermelon, tomatoes, cucumber and shallot. While it is mixing add the oil slowly. Then add salt, sauce, vinegar and mix everything for a few more seconds. Taste it and add something more if needed. Before serving, put the glass rim under water and then in the salt, then add one little tomato. Fill the glass with gazpacho, decorate with cucumber, tomato and feta cheese crumble. Gazpacho can be easily drank, but serve it with teaspoons to eat the decoration.

Melone, gamberi e sakè Ingredienti 250 gr di melone 100 ml di sakè 10 code di gambero sale olio extravergine d’oliva fruttato leggero sesamo nero erba cipollina Preparazione Pulite il melone, mettetelo nel boccale di un frullatore, aggiungete sale, un po’ d’olio e la metà del sakè. Frullate e assaggiate la zuppa di melone. Correggete eventualmente il bilanciamento: la dose del sakè dipende dalla tipologia. Riempite dei bicchierini monoporzione e teneteli in freddo. Nel frattempo scaldate una padella con poco olio e fate saltare le code di gambero. Sfumate i gamberi con il restante sakè, salate. Disponete le code di gambero su ogni bicchierino e decorate con sesamo nero ed erba cipollina.

Ingredients 250 gm melon 100 ml sake 10 shrimp tails salt extra virgin olive oil slightly fruity black sesame seeds chives Preparation Clean up the melon, put it in the
tankard of the mixer, add salt, some oil and half of the sake. Mix and taste the melon soup. Balance the ingredients if needed: sake quantity depends upon the sake kind. Fill a few little glasses and keep them in the refrigerator. In the meanwhile put some oil in a pan and sear the shrimp tails. Simmer them with the rest of the sake, salt them. Put one shrimp tail on each glass and garnish with black sesame seeds and chives.
