Aura- Evaporative Cooler Design
AU RA Graduation Project Department of Industrial Design- SADA Summer 2017
“ How can we design an
application for an evaporative cooler making it user-friendly and informative?
Evaporative coolers are a type of cooling unit which are extensively used in Pakistan. They are available in different sizes and with different interfaces.
These interfaces are usually hard to understand and hard to use. They are confusing, with no clear differentiation between the uses of different knobs. There is a lack of app-control or remote control as well when compared with Air Conditioners.
PROBLEM

DESIGN ITERATIONS
FINAL DESIGN
The proposed application is a user-friendly one which is fairly simple to understand and use. The evaporative cooler provides real time data to the application through the use of a microprocessor and sensors. The application uses a cool color palette in reference to the main purpose of the unit: cooling.
APPLICATION
The new design of the evaporative cooler as well as the accompanying app are intuitive and user-friendly.
Most of the interface is made of symbols for easy comprehension regardless of the language the user speaks. Advanced options are given for scheduling as well as weather settings.

“ How can we redesign an electric kettle using morphological development as a strategy?
A Marks & Spencer electric water kettle was purchased and studied through sketches in order to familiarize oneself with its form and different parts. An operational sequence diagram and a block diagram were made to understand the function of different parts of the kettle and how are they used.
After the initial ideation (see next page), different combinations of the iterative designs of the kettle were sketched out in order to come up with different forms of the kettle.
PROBLEM
“ ”
Morphological development strategy was used for the ideation process. Each part of the kettle was considered separately in its form and then different iterations of its form were made. This part of the project was done in pairs.
IDEATION
FINAL SKETCH
ELECTRIC KETTLE This kettle was procured & disassembled. Then each part was studied and measured; and 3-D modeled in Rhino accordingly.

PROBLEM
“ How can we re-purpose
Inspiration was taken from truck art and a small scenario was built as to what the repurposed HiLux should look like.
INSPIRATION
Personas were created in order to identify the key stakeholders and to understand them better. Then interviews were conducted with people who were key stakeholders; online surveys were also conducted to understand user needs and preferences.
RESEARCH
”
The business plan is such that the cars take different routes and sell local crafts to the people. There is a variety of crafts and products and the car is restocked every day. The business plan employs cultural and social sustainability since its promoting local craft as well as creating new employment opportunities.
SOLUTION
The final design of ‘Dastard-The Craft selling Car’ is such that it opens up to be a shopping display. Ergonomics and aesthetics have been paid special consideration. The business plan is such that these cars will be run under an NGO who will provide the logistics.

“ How can we make serving and storing chutneys fun and convenient?
Chutneys are traditional dips made in the subcontinent to be eaten with all kinds of snacks and meals. They are usually sweet & sour in taste.
Chutney bowls being small; are often tripped over during placement of larger dishes on the dining table or in the refrigerator, causing spillage and hard-to-clean stains.
PROBLEM
These chutneys are usually homemade and stored in circular jars or bowls. The circular shape takes up space both in the refrigerator and cabinets.
“ ”
Inspiration was taken from tin lunch containers used in South Asia to take to work/ offices. The process was iterative.
IDEATION
Jars detachable from the storage frame and hangable on the frame of the larger serving dish
Trica chutney jars fit in a refrigerator door easily
Trica consists of triangular glass jars for storing & serving chutneys; serving glass dishes, wooden lids and detachable wire frames.
