400m The State Library’s forecourt is a public open space, a grass lawn that is used all throughout the day by people who want to relax, enjoy the sun, eat and talk with their companions and study/read. It is publicly accessible and faces Melbourne Central station. The site visit was conducted on Monday, 16th March, 2020, at 11:50 - 12:10 and 17:50-18:10 p.m. The aim of this exercise was to conduct a site analysis on the different behaviours the people who used the site exhibited. Of those, the most common included facing the street when conversing among groups of three and less, which could support the hypothesis that people look at their surroundings even when they’re conversing or working on their devices, and angling their body slightly towards their companions to feel engaged in the group conversations/activities. Among different activities, mobile and tablet users were the highest recorded during the observation, especially among individuals. The rest of the observations have been recorded in the site study notes.

This sound analysis map presents a subjective, personal perspective of the sounds. Traffic lights and engine noises might sound very loud to me, and the map will reflect just that. The sound intensity and sounds that one picks up on will vary from person to person. This map represents only my personal experience walking through the Russell Street Transect. Also, this map is not a direct substitute for physical infrastructure that exists. For instance, traffic lights that didn’t sound when I walked past them were not recorded. The intensity/ loudness of the sounds are depicted by the size and number of rings on the circles. Throughout the data collection process, the hammering and drilling sounds from construction sites were the most prominent and piercing. Construction sites were scattered all over the CBD, and there was at least one on every street. As we started out early on a Saturday morning, we did not encounter many people, and most cafes, restaurants and shops were still closed. On top of that, the current health crisis has caused the streets to be a lot emptier and deserted than usual. As time passed, there were more people on the streets, which can be observed by analysing the passage of time on the map.
