Leadership, Legacy, and Local

The first quarter of 2023 passed in a flash, but with a lengthy list of Chamber programs and priorities undertaken. You will find highlights of our 60th Annual Dinner and 6th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership, which was held in February, in this issue of the Current. Each year, the Annual Dinner becomes a night of celebration for the many ways our members move our region forward. It comes down to leadership and how willing business leaders are to dig in, tackle issues, create opportunities, and work together. There is a definitive legacy here of this kind of leadership - and it shows.

We also celebrated the graduation of the 39th Leadership Manatee class. These individuals join more than 1,300 past graduates of the program in committing to using their talents and resources to make a difference. Applications for the 2023-2024 class are available now and I hope you will consider applying or encouraging another leader within your organization to do so. The program was started in 1982 with an overarching goal of ensuring our community always has leaders with an in-depth and well-rounded perspective about how Manatee County "ticks" and who are willing to take their leadership to the next level.

Our state elected officials are in the middle of the 2023 Florida legislative session and your Chamber is tracking issues on a daily basis. Major legislation has quickly moved through both the House and Senate and there is more to come. Our advocacy efforts include keeping our delegation and their legislative staff aware of our local priorities. Many issues require long-term attention and we have been a consistent voice of local businesses for many decades. I share my thanks with our Chamber's Legislative Committee, many of whom traveled with us to Tallahassee and attended our Pancakes & Politics event to dialogue with our delegation. We have also been planning a revamped Spring Expo, which will be held on May 11. This showcase event gives our members the valuable opportunity to promote their products and services and is a high-energy networking opportunity for our entire membership. Spring Expo will be held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center and I hope that you will be there so that I can say hello and thank you for placing a priority on connecting, shopping, and growing "local". It matters!

Many of you enjoyed at least one game during Spring Training this season. The economic impact of having Major League Baseball in our community results in tens of millions of dollars for our local economy and we are so proud that the Pittsburgh Pirates have called Manatee County home for more than 50 years. Did you know that the Pirates joined the Chamber before they even played their first game in Bradenton? The late Roberto Clemente built an incredible legacy on and off the field through heart, hard work, and compassion. One quote that sticks with me is "I am more valuable to my team hitting .330 than swinging for home runs." It speaks to me about consistency, dedication, humbleness, leadership - and legacy - and can be a call to action as we work together to grow our economy, enhance our quality of life, and set a vision for the future.

Thank you for all of the ways you are making a difference through steady leadership, creating a legacy, and focusing on local success.

Chamber Legislative Committee members traveled to Tallahassee to share local priorities with our state officials, including the Florida Department of Transportation. Bob Blalock received the 6th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership at this year's Annual Dinner. Everyone who heard the introduction of Bob and his reflections on leadership gained a deeper sense of how important it is to set the course, give beyond yourself, lead with integrity, and not worry about the credit.

Legislative Committee Visits Tallahassee

The 2023 Florida Legislative Session kicked off on March 7. As the Florida Legislature works through Session, the Manatee Chamber continues to advocate on behalf of the business community on priorities that are important to you, including infrastructure, attainable housing, commercial property insurance reform, workforce development, and more. We also support legislation that will continue to reduce the business rent tax, Florida’s corporate income tax, and the Communications Services tax.

Members of the Chamber’s Legislative Committee spent several days in Tallahassee during committee weeks, prior to the start of Session, meeting with Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue and District 1 Secretary L.K. Nandam, our local representatives in the Senate and the House, legislative staff and policy heads from the Governor’s Office, and the Florida Department of Environment Protection.

The committee serves as a key component of our advocacy efforts by sharing updates from Tallahassee, insights from their particular industries, and capitalizing on their relationships with others in the legislative arena. While this committee meets primarily in the fall to develop our State and Federal Business Agenda, they are often called back together to discuss a new bill or a new issue that comes up through the legislative process. These partnerships make our Chamber advocacy stronger and enhance our ability to quickly respond to requests from elected officials, government agencies, and our members.

This session we have already seen a focus on lawsuit abuse reform, attainable housing solutions, and funding for education and workforce initiatives. Session is expected to conclude on May 5.

The Manatee Chamber’s Legislative Committee will start developing our 2024 Business Agenda this fall. This process is

dependent on input from our members on issues that impact the business community, policies that are barriers to continued expansion, and proposals that create efficiencies to support economic growth. For more information on the Legislative Committee, contact Tara Poulton at TaraP@ManateeChamber.com.

Legislators Share Insights at Pancakes & Politics

The Chamber held our annual Pancakes & Politics event on February 27 at IMG Academy Golf Club. Members of our Manatee and Sarasota Legislative Delegations joined us bright and early to share insights on the upcoming session and answer member questions.

Chamber-supported priorities like infrastructure capacity, workforce development, healthcare coverage, property insurance reform, and the attainable housing crisis were discussed as our elected officials prepared to head to Tallahassee. To learn more about the Chamber’s state and federal legislative priorities and to find contact information for elected officials, visit our website at ManateeChamber.com/ Advocacy. Pancakes & Politics was sponsored by Keiser University and Spectrum by Charter Communications.

Tech Tip: Microsoft Making Changes to the Current Free Version of Microsoft Teams

Does your small business use Microsoft Teams free to communicate and collaborate with remote and in office employees? If so, there are some new changes taking effect April 12, 2023 that may affect your data that is stored in Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Office has several subscription tiers for both business and home users. If you are a Microsoft 365 business subscriber, Microsoft Teams is an included application, and these changes should not affect you. However, if your small business utilizes a personal Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase Microsoft Office license these changes could affect you and your data.

Currently, Microsoft Teams free is a free to use video conferencing and collaboration application, however, in April Microsoft will be rolling out a paid tier called Microsoft Teams Essentials. The current Microsoft Teams that is free will be renamed Microsoft Teams Free (Classic). Here is where the major problems could arise. To continue using Microsoft Teams for free (with reduced features), you will need to create a new Microsoft Teams free account, however, you will lose all data that you have stored in your current Microsoft Teams account. As of this writing, the only way to keep the data currently stored in Microsoft Teams free is to upgrade to the Microsoft Teams Essential plan which will cost $4 per user per month. Microsoft has not created a tool to move or migrate that data, which means your organization may need to manually download any documents or videos that you would like to archive. Linked at the end of this article is the Microsoft support page detailing this change.

To clarify, this change should not affect organizations and businesses who pay for a Microsoft 365 Business subscription. However, it may be prudent to reach out to your Information Technology professional or Microsoft to clarify this change to ensure that you will not lose any valuable data.

Microsoft support page detailing these changes: microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/free-classic-retirement Microsoft 365 Subscription Tiers: microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/business/compare-allmicrosoft-365-business-products

Chamber Annual Dinner Honors the Legacy of Business Leadership

Our 60th Annual Dinner was an evening of celebration that honored business leadership in the greater Manatee County region and offered a valuable opportunity to connect, celebrate major accomplishments, and recognize the contributions of those who make a significant investment in our community.

We honored outgoing Chairman of the Board Rick Bisio for his many years of leadership with the Chamber. There was much to celebrate with strong member engagement, the return of several Chamber programs postpandemic, and our Chamber's fifth Florida Chamber of the Year Award!

Jeff Podobnik was welcomed as our 2023 Chairman of the Board with a ceremonial passing of the gavel. Jeff has a long history of leadership with our Chamber and will lead the Board with dedication while throwing in a lot of fun.

The pinnacle of the evening was the presentation of the 6th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award to Robert “Bob” Blalock. The honor recognizes a community leader who has made an impact in Manatee County well beyond their own company or organization. See page 19 for more on Bob Blalock's legacy of leadership and philanthropy.

Thank you to our members – the heart of the Manatee Chamber – for working alongside the Chamber team and board to create an even better community in which to live, work, play, and own a business. Together we are stronger.

He was named 2017 Manatee County Distinguished Citizen and was honored with the Lifetime Spirit Award: Manatee Community Foundation in 2012.

Congratulations LEADERSHIP

MANATEE GRADUATES CLASS OF 2022-23

The Board of Governors of Leadership Manatee recently celebrated the graduation of the 39th Class of Leadership Manatee. Forty-one graduates participated in the seven-month long program designed to expose current and future leaders to the multitude of opportunities and challenges facing our community. The program has brought more than 1,300 business and community leaders together to strengthen connections and build knowledge about Manatee County. For more information on participating in a future class or being a sponsor,  please contact Tara Poulton at 941-748-4842, ext. 124 or TaraP@ManateeChamber.com.

“I loved Leadership Manatee. I didn’t know what to expect coming into it, but really enjoyed the experience. Informative tours and interesting information from community leaders were great but the networking was the best part! I met people in this class that I never would have known. It allowed me to have conversations with people from all different viewpoints which was very interesting. Thank you to the Manatee Chamber for allowing me to be part of this wonderful program."
