#ManateeStrong It's Not Just a Hashtag - It's Who We Are
By Jacki Dezelski, IOM, President | CEO
You may have noticed that this issue of the Current magazine arrived in your mailbox a bit late. It was scheduled to be at the printer on almost the exact date of Hurricane Helene's arrival on the gulfcoast of Florida. We were able to "stop the presses" as the saying goes and then, within two weeks, pivot once again as Hurricane Milton came ashore with a direct hit in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
Unprecedented, once in a lifetime, devastating... the list of descriptors of the combined impacts of Debby, Helene, and Milton continues to grow. But, the list of descriptors of our region's response is just as long: prepared, generous, strong, giving, perseverance, kind, helpful, committed, resilient.
Full recovery is not a sprint, but we are here for the marathon. The incredible efforts of so many governmental agencies, businesses, non-profits, and individuals have already resulted in incredible progress. But, once the national spotlight has moved on to another issue, I know that our local community will be here to make sure every business reopened, every job saved, and every neighborhood cleaned up and rebuilt is celebrated and supported.
On the Monday after Milton's landfall, our Chamber team was ready to begin our phone call outreach to every key contact for our 2,100+ member businesses and organizations. In just 4 1/2 days, we made our way through more than 1,600 of those outbound calls, skipping only those members who had already told us that they fared well and wanted us to focus our calls on those who needed it most. While the conversations were heavy at times, so many were uplifting and reassuring. Our members wanted to know how to help - help their fellow business owners, help their employees, and help their neighbors. Many wanted to know how to volunteer, where to donate, and how to focus in on "shopping local" with businesses navigating a difficult recovery.
We sent multiple mass emails to our members during the four weeks of Helene and Milton (did you see the meme renaming them Hellton - it might stick!) and updated our ManateeChamber.com/stormrecovery web page countless times. Many members reached out with helpful information or offers to assist. THANK YOU!
I participated in more than 50 Emergency Operations Center phone calls led by Manatee County government with representation of top level leadership from all six cities and critical emergency-related industries like emergency shelters, healthcare, utilities, transportation, infrastructure, state and federal response leaders, and many others. It is incredibly impressive how well these professionals respond - before, during, and after a disaster - and how well the communication and coordination between so many agencies and entities is handled. There are so many THANK YOUs that need to be shared!
I'll end with the headline at the top of this page - #ManateeStrong. It's not just a tagline, it's who we are. Together we are stronger. Together we will rebuild. Together our future is even brighter.
Welcome to the Chamber Team!
Tonya
Tonya is responsible for managing many of the Chamber’s networking opportunities and events, including the Annual Dinner, golf tournament, business expos, and special events. Having resided in Manatee County for most of her life, she dedicates her free time to several boards that support local non-profit organizations. In addition, Tonya is a passionate supporter of the Buccaneers and appreciates exploring all of life’s adventures with her friends and family.
Disaster Resources for Businesses ManateeChamber.com/stormrecovery
The Manatee Chamber is dedicated to supporting our members and the broader community, especially during challenging times. We are committed to providing essential resources, timely information, and unwavering support to ensure the safety and resilience of our community. Together, we navigate these challenges, fostering a spirit of unity and preparedness.
Within 48 hours of Helene's landfall, our storm recovery web page was populated with up-to-date information and resources. Our Chamber team was reaching out to members and participating in critical disaster response meetings and efforts. Two weeks later, our response efforts were taken to a new level with Milton's landfall in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
As we stand with our business community through long-term recovery efforts, please let us know if there are additional resources to share with our membership or if there are needs that are not being addressed.

#7 - Manatee Chamber Supports Renewal of the 1-Mill for Schools
We support efforts to strengthen and enhance our public schools and the School District of Manatee County. After careful consideration and discussion, our Board of Directors has voted to endorse the continuation of the 1-mill to continue the significant progress made. Students' success directly impacts the future success of local businesses and our economy. Every dollar generated by continuing the millage stays in Manatee County, benefiting our students, teachers, classrooms, and school sites. Continuation of the 1-mill improves student learning by:
• keeping high-quality teachers in Manatee County through competitive pay to attract and retain teachers as well as school support staff and paraprofessionals
• extending the school day by thirty minutes of additional instructional time for students, which equates to an entire additional year of instruction for students in our system for their full K-12 years
• increased STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), visual and performing arts, and athletics programming
• expansion of early literacy programming
• increased school safety and security
• assisting public charter schools
We supported the initial referendum on the 1-mill in 2018 and the continuation of the 1 mill in 2021. Our District has made laudable progress since the adoption of the 1-mill, including a ranking of 25th out of 67 districts in the state in 2022 (the highest ranking in the history of the District – notably up from 41st in 2016). In 2024, student scores went up in Reading, Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies - and the district had 24 “A” schools –the largest number of “A” schools since 2012.
A high-quality, safe, effective, and adequately funded education system is foundational to individual success, business growth, and community vibrancy.
General Election
# 8 - Manatee Chamber Supports Adding a 6th Penny to Tourist Tax
We support adding one penny to the Tourist Development Tax, which is levied when someone stays in a local hotel, vacation rental, Airbnb, or other short-term housing for less than six months. The tax is paid primarily by visitors to Manatee County, but the funds generated are spent on infrastructure and amenity improvements enjoyed by all, including residents.
The Chamber has supported past increases to the tourism tax. Sarasota, Pinellas, and Hillsborough Counties have already passed a 6th penny increase in their respective tourist taxes. Revenue generated by the tourism tax supports important assets and enhancements like beach renourishment, arts and cultural amenities, piers and docks, recreation and sports facilities, special event venues, and more.
What Is It - In Florida, the Tourist Development Tax (TDT) is collected on all short-term rentals (six months or less), including hotel/motel accommodations. A county's revenue and sales determine its tax eligibility rate - up to 6% - but residents vote on the increases.
Who Pays It - The tax applies only to tourists/visitors when they make a short-term rental transaction in Manatee County. Residents will benefit from all funds collected and will only ever see the tax if they stay in a short-term rental.
How Do We Benefit - Funds collected from the TDT are used for community projects that improve quality of life for both residents and visitors, everything from beach and shoreline renourishment to cultural enrichment efforts.
What's the History on the TDT - Manatee County first enacted the tax in 1980 and the most recent increase was in 2009.
• Early Voting: Monday, October 21 through Saturday, November 2, 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM Daily

Volunteers Needed for the Big Bank Theory
Help High School Seniors Strengthen Their Financial Literacy Skills through a Fun, Hands-On Activity
The Chamber's Big Bank Theory program teaches teens the importance of budgeting, saving money, and prioritizing spending decisions. During the program, students are engaged in a handson, real-life financial simulation that introduces them to the realities of being financially sensible. They gain valuable experience paying bills and making daily decisions that are essential to being a responsible adult. Making wise financial decisions and learning the importance of budgeting is one of the many reasons the Manatee Chamber partners with the School District to offer the Big Bank Theory.

business after hours
It was truly a privilege and an honor to host September’s After Hours event at our training facility. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who made this gathering a success and a memorable experience.
First and foremost, a heartfelt thank you to our incredible Mom for her tireless support and countless hours of help with nearly every aspect of the event. A special thank you goes out to Heather Koester for her engaging ambulance tours, Lily O’Connor, our lead instructor from Integrity Medical Training, Tyler McKinzey, our EMS Educator with Beyond the Sirens. Your expertise and dedication to education made a significant impact on our interactive workstations. We are also incredibly grateful to our recent EMT graduates, TJ and Glenn, for their invaluable help at the Stop The Bleed station.
We would be remiss not to acknowledge Ernie Withers, who not only assisted with the CPR station but also continues to champion CPR education and defibrillator distribution through his foundation, Defibrillate Manatee. Your commitment to saving lives is inspiring and deeply appreciated. To the Chamber staff, whom we consider rockstars, thank you for your unwavering support and the outstanding work you do to assist us and all the chamber members. Your dedication is crucial to the success of our community events.
We hope that everyone who attended learned something new, made valuable connections, and enjoyed the fantastic food provided by our friends at Apple Spice. Your participation and enthusiasm truly made the event special.
September holds a profound significance for us as we honor the lives lost on 9/11, those who continue to fight for their survival, and all the brave individuals who stepped up to help in every possible way. We remember our Dad, who we lost last year due to medical complications from his work at Ground Zero. His courageous battle was faced with a smile and a sense of pride in his sacrifice.
Our motto has always been L.E.T.S. Save Lives together. If you’re interested in arranging a class for your staff, family, or community, remember that we are happy to come to your location. For more information on our classes, please reach out to us at 941-727-3664, email us at Info@letscpr.com, or visit our website at www.letsavelives.com. With heartfelt thanks, Rick and Ruth Landes
