Fall Preview

August feels like a notable transition month for me as students and teachers head back to classrooms across our region. There is no longer a "summer slowdown" in our area and business community and your Chamber has been hard at work on policy issues, get-out-the-vote efforts, member programming, and several new initiatives. I am excited for our team to share our full fall line-up of opportunities with you. We pride ourselves on being "World Class Connectors" and in the coming months, you will find ways to connect to issues that impact your business, more exposure and visibility opportunities, valuable networking, and volunteer opportunities designed to equip students to be even more successful as our future workforce.

Hundreds of Chamber members just like you have volunteered with the Manatee Chamber's Big Bank Theory program over the past ten years. You will find a brief overview on page 8 and I encourage you to seriously consider giving a few hours of your time to participate. A good analogy is that we recreate the "Game of Life" (you're welcome Gen Xers for that reference!) at each Manatee County public high school and help students navigate the financial decisions necessary in the life of a young adult. Each student is randomly assigned a profile that includes their education level, job, monthly salary, and family profile. Their assignment is to make financial decisions at thirteen different booths that simulate real life. They focus on making choices about housing, insurance, childcare, utilities, groceries, entertainment, vehicles, and more to live within their assigned monthly salary. It is an eye-opening experience for many! We'll need to fill close to two hundred volunteer slots with Chamber member volunteers. We make it easy, and I know you will enjoy interacting with our local students.

We also have a fantastic line-up of Chamber Headliners luncheons this fall, starting with our Superintendent of the School District of Manatee County, Dr. Jason Wysong. I look forward to seeing our members at these monthly luncheons and learning about important issues and efforts in our region. We believe "World Class Connections" include connections to information as well as opportunities to have an influential voice on issues that matter to our members. Check out page 10 for highlights of our August and September Headliners luncheons.

Welcome to the Chamber Team!

Dan manages and executes the marketing and communications for the Chamber, the Chamber Foundation, and Manatee Young Professionals to support and enhance the mission, visibility, all programming and events, goals, and generate results that will improve the quality of life in our community. He received his BS in Exercise and Sport Physiology with a concentration in Business and Psychology from Penn State University, graduating with high distinction. He has worked with the YMCA of the USA, Goldfish Swim School, and recently, the Florida Cultural Group.

Dan is originally from Pennsylvania but considers Florida home. He volunteers with his wife and daughters at the Manatee Performing Arts Center and the music ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Dan Yonko, Marketing & Communications Director

On the Ballot: Manatee Chamber Supports Renewal of the 1 Mill for Schools

Referendum Item Will Be on the November Ballot in Manatee County

The Manatee Chamber supports efforts to strengthen and enhance our public schools and the School District of Manatee County. After careful consideration and discussion, our Board of Directors has voted to endorse the continuation of the 1 Mill to continue the significant progress that has been made. The success of students directly impacts the future success of local businesses and our economy.

HOW REFERENDUM DOLLARS WILL BE SPENT

Every dollar generated by continuing the millage stays in Manatee County, benefiting our students, teachers, classrooms, and school sites. Continuation of the 1 Mill improves student learning by:

• keeping high quality teachers in Manatee County through competitive pay to attract and retain teachers as well as school support staff and paraprofessionals

All referendum funds are spent right here in Manatee County and used to keep our public schools competitive with neighboring school districts like Sarasota, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Charlotte counties – all of whom have voter-approved additional millage

• extending the school day by 30 minutes of additional instructional time for students, which equates to an entire additional year of instruction for students in our system for their full K-12 years

• increased STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), visual and performing arts, and athletics programming

• expansion of early literacy programming

Increasing Security for Students and Schools

• increased school safety and security

• assisting public charter schools

Recruiting and Retaining Teachers and Staff

Protecting students and staff is the district’s top priority Funds will support School Guardians and School Resource Officers and help the district continue to strengthen strategies for keeping students and schools safe

The Chamber also supported the initial referendum on the 1 Mill in 2018 and the continuation of the 1 mill in 2021 after careful consideration of each proposed ballot item. Our District has made laudable progress since the adoption of the 1 Mill, including a ranking of 25th out of 67 districts in the state in 2022 (the most recent available ranking data and the highest ranking in the history of the District – notably up from 41st in 2016).

A high quality, safe, effective, and adequately funded education system is foundational to individual success, business growth, and community vibrancy.

With a national teacher shortage, school districts compete for the best-andbrightest teachers, as well as bus drivers paraprofessionals, food service workers, guidance counselors and principals It is crucial for school districts to attract and retain highquality employees

Business Volunteers Needed for the Big Bank Theory Program in Seven High Schools

The Chamber's Big Bank Theory program teaches teens the importance of budgeting, saving money, and prioritizing spending decisions. During the program, students are engaged in a hands-on, real-life financial simulation that introduces them to the realities of personal finances. They gain valuable experience paying bills and making daily decisions that are essential to being a responsible adult. And we need you to make it possible! It takes hundreds of Chamber member volunteers to reach every high school and more than 3,000 students. These high school students are our future workforce and your future employees!

If you are interested in volunteering (we make it easy!) please email CareyM@ManateeChamber.com to be added to our volunteer list. Important sponsorships are also available and offer great exposure for your business.

Big Bank Theory volunteers visit Manatee County schools to guide hands-on activites designed to teach high school seniors about financial literacy

The Manatee Chamber named its 2024 Champions of Healthcare at a celebratory awards event on June 20. With a crowd of close to 300, we honored 74 nominees, 21 finalists, and 10 award winners.

“We received tremendous support for the Champions of Healthcare Awards again this year. It means so much to our region that our tenth annual awards drew a lot of attention," said Jacki Dezelski, President and CEO of the Manatee Chamber. "It is an honor to celebrate the important work so many people, programs, business and institutions are doing to support healthcare access and delivery, particularly work that is above and beyond anyone's ‘day job’. The Champions of Healthcare Awards has become a signature program which is a testament to the amazing work being done by so many. We were moved to tears during our awards event as honorees shared their humble passion for service and community members shared stories of how our award winners have made an impact.”

Plans are already under way for next year's awards, and it is not too early to begin thinking about nominating a deserving individual, organization, business, or program for the awards. If you'd like to secure your sponsorship for the 2025 Champions of Healthcare Awards, please contact Carey Miller at 941-748-4842, ext. 113.

business after hours

Hilton Garden Inn would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who showed up to our June Business After Hours event, even though the weather was wet to say the least! It was amazing to see such a huge crowd of Manatee Chamber members turn up to enjoy some great food and good networking.

Hopefully you also made some great connections and met some new people to add to your web of contacts in the area.

Newly renovated Hilton Garden Inn offers 115 sleeping rooms and 1,848 sq ft of meeting/banquet space, dividable into three pieces. We do all our catering in-house, which leaves room for a lot of flexibility. This event was just a taste of what we can accomplish, and we hope to see many of you try us out when the need for space or sleeping rooms arises!

The Garden Grill with our amazing bar is open to the public every day from 5PM-10PM. Please come join us for a glass and a bite! If interested in setting up group blocks, corporate rates or utilizing our meeting space please reach out to Nina Stenberg, Dual Director of Sales for the property, nina.stenberg@hilton.com.

business after hours

Town Square at University Parkway was excited to host Manatee Chamber’s July Business After Hours event in our Adult Day Enrichment Center. Town Square’s adult day program is built on the principle of reminiscence therapy and our 1950s and 60s-themed environment was a great place for people across all businesses to meet, network, and reminisce!

What a pleasure to host so many people and share a little bit of what Town Square has to offer seniors who are struggling with cognitive or physical impairments and provide their caregivers with some much-needed help. Thank you to everyone that attended and for making it such a great evening! For more information, please visit www.townsquare.net.

coffee club

Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County really appreciates the fantastic turnout at the Manatee Chamber’s May Coffee Club. We are so happy we were able to give folks a small taste of what we’re all about and encourage everyone to consider how they can personally or professionally engage in our mission to empower youth to reach their full potential. As discussed, one of our top priorities is providing opportunities for young people, ages 5-17, with impactful programming that addresses life skills and workforce readiness. By the time our 2,500+ members graduate high school, they will not only have a plan for their future but have also gained skills that will make them a valuable employee anywhere they choose to go. It’s a big vision, but one that is achievable by working together with our strategic partners in our community – which includes you!

On another note, did you know that both our DeSoto and Palmetto Club locations are available for rent outside of Club operating hours? (Think of all the possibilities from team building to networking to birthday parties and more!) If interested, please email rentals@bgcmanatee.org.

Thanks again for the wonderful display of community support of the Clubs and we look forward to connecting with you again soon! www.bgcmanatee.org

coffee club

Summerfield Senior Living extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who attended our inaugural Manatee Chamber June Coffee Club event! We’d like to take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on our incredible residents. While many join us for engaging activities and a little help with medications, and daily tasks, nearly all are here to forge meaningful friendships. Every resident here has a unique story to tell—ranging from retired firefighters and a fighter pilot to esteemed professors, published authors, talented artists, and even a former Pentagon secretary. We are proud to attend to and look after such an amazing community of individuals!

Sadly, many senior citizens experience isolation at home or only see loved ones on holidays. If you know someone who could benefit from assisted living or memory care, we hope you’ll think of Summerfield. Reminder: if the person you refer moves in and lives at Summerfield for 60 days, we will give you $500!

Please visit SummerfieldSeniorLiving.com for more information about our community, and thank you once again for sharing breakfast with us at Summerfield!
