An Eye on Helping Our Members

As we begin Q2, there is a lot of excitement about our full lineup of opportunities for the Manatee Chamber to offer "World Class Connections" for our members this Spring. We recently hosted a Chamber 101 new member orientation and many members commented on both how much was available to them and how important it would be to encourage others on their team to take advantage, too. Local businesses join the Manatee Chamber for a variety of reasons and benefits - and our diverse offerings mean every member should target what is important to them.

One important connection the Chamber makes for its members is the connection to timely, accurate, and relevant information. In addition to the seminars listed on page 12 of this issue of the Current, we are planning for a second webinar in May (date TBD) on the Corporate Transparency Act and its requirements for small businesses.

The Act, which went into effect on January 1, 2024, impacts millions of small businesses across the U.S. and will require small businesses to report information about ownership of the business. This new Act will affect the majority of businesses in the US.

Key takeaways for upcoming webinar:

• What is the Corporate Transparency Act?

• Understand the intricacies of this act and its potential impact for your small business

• Who is considered a beneficial owner of a company?

• What information must be reported?

• What is the timeline to report?

• Where can business owners get help?

Watch your Chamber Insider email newsletter for information on our next webinar on this topic. If there are challenges your business is facing, opportunities you'd like to learn more about, or skills you'd like to receive training on for your team, we would love to build out even more seminar and webinar offerings for our members. Please reach out to Kim Dalglish at KimD@ManateeChamber.com or 941-748-4842, ext. 121.

Leading with Purpose: MYP's Journey to 25 Years of Excellence

The Manatee Chamber has been committed to offering young professionals opportunities to connect, lead, develop, and serve since 1999 with the launch of the Manatee Young Professionals (MYP). It was the Tampa Bay region's first "YP" program and also had a goal to assist in the attraction and retention of young professionals to the greater Manatee County area.

Current MYP Chair, Cassie White, captured the essence of MYP's mission by relating it to her journey of professional growth. She described how her leadership role has helped her to “get comfortable as a young professional speaking in front of medium to large groups with the support of my peers and teammates." A highlight was an invitation from Janelle (Esposito) VanHoose, the Chamber's 2024 Chairman of the Board, to speak at the Chamber's Annual Dinner in February to encourage Chamber leaders to identify young leaders in their companies to join MYP this year and announce MYP's newest initiative of offering mentoring opportunities.

Craig Warzecha, who chaired MYP from 2021-2022, spoke of the gratification of seeing the next generation take the reins, “The most rewarding part was connecting with the next wave of young professionals entering the community and helping them get plugged in. Seeing them now take over as MYP leaders has been great to watch.”

In the early days, MYP programming focused on building a network of young professionals who could then drive the program's evolution. The two main offerings were networking events and community service projects. The group was strategic in wanting to connect young leaders to community engagement so that they had a role in shaping the future and were building connections that would mean they were more likely to stay in our region.

Chris Pennewill, MYP Chair from 2007-2008, recognized the potential for the program early on and found it rewarding to be “working to build a fairly new organization that we felt could have long lasting impact on the membership and the community.”

The Chamber soon began an effort to recruit more young professionals to serve on Chamber committees to elevate their voice and influence. MYP leaders began participating in the Chamber's Annual Leadership Retreat and regularly surveyed MYP members to track issues of importance. We also dedicate a permanent seat on the Chamber's Board of Directors for the Chair of MYP.

In 2019, to honor MYP's 20th anniversary, the Chamber launched the MYP Awards. The sell-out event quickly became a signature community celebration, with this year's MYP Awards event set for April 11.

When asked about highlights during his time as MYP Chair in 2020, Dustin Fusillo shared, “Collaborating with interesting and motivated people who have a shared interest in serving their business and community” was the most memorable and rewarding part.

In reaching the 25-year milestone, MYP has a generation of history and evolution. Members from across the years have reached the top levels of management in companies, chaired high impact non-profit boards, been elected to public office, and become philanthropists who make a difference.

Reflecting on the lasting impact of the program, Ben Bakker, who led from 2013 to 2015 reminisced about "the longstanding friendships and business relationships made, including meeting my current business partner through MYP."

Mitch Lomazov, who chaired MYP last year, had this advice for young professionals looking to make new connections and grow: “Whether you are a member of Manatee Young Professionals or the Chamber overall, get involved! You will find yourself surrounded by amazing people in our community who will support and encourage you to develop and reach your goals.”

From fostering meaningful connections to empowering leaders, MYP's mission comes to life through the success stories of our members. Thank you to all our past and present members for being part of our legacy.

As Stewart Moon, Jr., MYP Chair in 2016-2017, stated, "My advice for young professionals would be to get involved and get out there - the connections you make are incredible and help you develop both professionally and personally in ways you can't imagine!"

We encourage all of our Chamber members to look within your organization to identify team members who would benefit from involvement in MYP. Find more information at MYPonline.com or by calling Debbie McDermott at 941-748-4842, ext. 117.

education & workforce

Chamber Makes a Big Impact with Project TEACH

On March 14, Manatee Chamber members and volunteers headed back to the classroom, speaking with fourth graders about career opportunities. In total, we reached 153 classrooms across Manatee County in one fantastic morning. One volunteer offered this comment after her time in the classroom, "It was very rewarding to share a morning with students at Harvey Elementary School. They were brimming with curiosity as they asked many questions about my background and profession, as well as the types of educational and personal experiences that led me to choose my career."

Now in its 31st year, Project TEACH (Teach Everyone About Career Horizons) is designed to help students begin to think about what they would like to be when they grow up. While students can easily imagine being a doctor, veterinarian, star athlete, video game designer or even a YouTube influencer, there are many career choices right here in our community that they aren’t familiar with including: high-tech manufacturing, skilled trades, business services, law enforcement, business ownership, hospitality, non-profit management, and so many others. Volunteers shared insight into why they chose their careers and what skills help make them successful.

An important aspect of the program is getting the students to begin thinking about what type of education they would need to land that dream job. Post-secondary education is important and with the great educational options in our region, students do not have to travel far to receive world-class training and find a career. Special thanks to the Manatee Education Foundation for serving as our presenting sponsor once again this year.

One volunteer shared this assessment, "Everyone involved in Project TEACH and the Chamber has been amazing. I have been participating in volunteer and community engagement events for around twenty years. This event was the BEST!!"

If you are interested in volunteering for programs like Project TEACH or would like to be more involved with the Chamber’s education and workforce programs, please contact Jacki Dezelski at JackiD@ManateeChamber.com.

Presented by: Barbara Byrne, L.C.S.W. with Ellie Mental Health

The workplace is often the front line when someone is struggling with mental health issues. Employers have a crucial role to play in promoting mental health and creating a supportive work environment. According to a survey from earlier this year by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 74% of full time employees say it is appropriate to discuss mental health concerns at work, but only 58% say they feel comfortable doing so. This presentation will provide insight into the myths of mental health that prevent us from starting the conversation and suggestions for engaging with and guiding someone to seek resources and professional help.

Fortifying Your Digital Fort: The Top 6 Dos and Don’ts of Password Security

Human vs. ChatGTP

A side by side comparison

Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn't a replacement for the human mind, but it it excels at handling repetitive tasks and generating ideas, freeing up human writers to focus on creativity, nuance, and emotional impact. In the side-by-side article below, we let a seasoned professional write an article on password security then asked ChatGPT to do the same. There are a lot of differences, but the information in each is accurate, well laid out, and each gets the job done.

by Human Time to Research and Write: 1.5 hours

Strong passwords and password management is essential in safeguarding your important and sensitive information.

Don’t use passwords

According to DOT Security, most account hacks are completed using brute force attacks where a computer algorithm tests millions of password combinations until it finds the right one. Short passwords, even extremely complex ones, can be compromised in one of these attacks.

Do use passphrases

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, passphrases that are longer than 15 characters without any added complexity are more secure than short complex passwords. For example: BroomsStoredInACloset! is a much stronger password than @n9Im!3P.

Don’t use the same passphrase or password for multiple accounts

Using the same password or passphrase for multiple accounts can leave these accounts vulnerable if one of them were successfully breached.

Do use a system to create unique passphrases

Creating a system to tailor your passphrase for each account is a simple way to create unique passphrases. Take a phrase like “My Google Password” or “My Facebook Password”, and take the first letter of each word. Next combine it you’re your chosen passphrase, such as BroomsStoredInACloset! Your unique password for your Google account would be MGPBroomsStoredInACloset! and your unique Facebook password would be MFPBroomsStoredInACloset!

Don’t write down your passphrases or passwords

Writing down your credentials on a piece of paper or in a notebook can compromise all of your accounts if someone gains access to it.

Do use a password manager

The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency recommends using an encrypted password manager that stores all of your unique passwords or passphrases. Then secure this password manager with a strong unique passphrase.

Fortifying Your Digital Fort: The Top 6 Dos and Don’ts of Password Security

In today's digitally driven world, safeguarding your personal and sensitive information starts with fortifying your digital fort. Passwords serve as the first line of defense against cyber threats, making it crucial to adopt robust practices for password security. Here are the top six dos and don'ts to enhance your password security:

1. Do: Utilize Complex Passwords

Employ passwords that are at least 12 characters long, containing a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid easily guessable phrases or common words.

2. Don’t: Reuse Passwords

Resist the temptation to reuse passwords across multiple accounts. If one account is compromised, it could lead to a domino effect, endangering all your accounts.

3. Do: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Enhance your security by enabling two-factor authentication wherever possible. This adds an extra layer of verification, typically requiring a code sent to your phone or email, further securing your accounts.

4. Don’t: Share Passwords

Never share your passwords with anyone, including friends or family. Sharing passwords compromises your security and could lead to unauthorized access to your accounts.

5. Do: Regularly Update Passwords

Frequently change your passwords, especially for critical accounts like banking or email. Regular updates minimize the risk of unauthorized access, particularly after potential data breaches.

6. Don’t: Store Passwords Insecurely

Avoid storing passwords in easily accessible locations such as sticky notes or unencrypted files. Instead, utilize reputable password managers to securely store and manage your passwords.

By adhering to these dos and don'ts of password security, you significantly bolster your defenses against cyber threats, safeguarding your valuable personal and sensitive information.

A Legacy of Business

61ST ANNUAL

Leadership

7 th ANNUAL ROBERT P. BARTZ AWARD

2024 Award Honoree

John Vita

Bob Turner

John Vita has earned a very long list of titles: successful businessman, Board member, Board President, and business award winner, to name a few. But rising above these professional recognitions, his titles of husband, father, son, uncle, mentor, coach, and friend are the most important to him.

John is described by colleagues as a humble leader whose commitment to youth in Manatee County, in particular, will leave a lasting legacy. His path to leadership is marked by his Key Club experience as a Manatee High School student - a youth volunteer experience also shared by his father before him - and as the club's advisor for many years as an adult. John has a long history of involvement with Kiwanis and served as President of Bradenton Kiwanis from 2000-2001. Friends mark his legacy this way: "He was not just an advisor, but a mentor, teacher, and friend to all of the members."

John graduated from St. Leo University with a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics. He moved to New York to begin work with Merrill Lynch. In 1993, he returned home to Bradenton to work for Merrill Lynch. Eventually, he was assigned to the Bradenton office where his father worked. In 2008 he began working with Morgan Stanley as a senior vice president and financial advisor.

John is married to Tompie and they raised a son, Reese, and daughter, April. He has given of his time and talents to many organizations including Manatee High Key Club (advisor – 25 years), Bradenton Kiwanis Foundation (chairman), Manatee Wildcats (administrator and coach), Manatee Family YMCA (president), Hernando DeSoto Historical Society (President and Foundation Chair), Manatee High School Alumni Association (president), St. Joseph’s School Board (chairman), Manatee Children’s Services Advisory Board (vice chair) and Leadership Manatee (director).

Congratulations LEADERSHIP MANATEE GRADUATES CLASS OF 2023-24

The Board of Governors of Leadership Manatee recently celebrated the graduation of the 40th Class of Leadership Manatee. Forty-four graduates participated in the seven-month long program designed to expose current and future leaders to the multitude of opportunities and challenges facing our community. The program has brought more than 1,400 business and community leaders together to strengthen connections and build knowledge about Manatee County. For more information on participating in a future class or being a sponsor, please contact Debbie McDermott at 941-748-4842, ext. 117 or DebbieM@ManateeChamber.com.

"I heard so many wonderful things about this program from past graduates. I learned so much about Manatee County. From our county's history to the innovation in the future. I have made some lifelong friends by participating in Leadership Manatee and highly recommend it to anyone interested."

WOW! What an outstanding way to celebrate the year! 2024 has begun with a friendly BANG by celebrating with a few 100 of our favorite colleagues at the DJ Swamp Shack located onsite at Willis Smith Construction! Thank you Nate Carr, Vice President & Shareholder of Willis Smith Construction, for updating our Chamber guests on the landmarks which Willis Smith has just completed and an update on what is yet to come. Everyone enjoyed their favorite spirits and enjoyed the delicious barbecue catered by TK Grill! Jimmey Shelton and his team did not disappoint.

We are so grateful to everyone that celebrated the New Year with us! We look forward to the next adventure together. Cheers!

coffee club

Step Up Suncoast was delighted to host the February Manatee Chamber Coffee Club at our Parkland location. We hope you formed a meaningful connection - whether it was with a professional that fills a gap in your network or just one of our hungry, resident turtles!

It’s always a pleasure to educate others about our array of services and programs. Step Up Suncoast is a Community Action Agency serving the residents of Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee, Charlotte, and Desoto counties. Our programming is focused on empowering individuals and families by providing education and support on their path to self-sufficiency. We develop the family unit with our childhood development, parenting education and support, and speech screening programs. Clients can overcome financial hardships and build independence through Agency services, such as housing counseling, utility and housing assistance, free tax assistance, and home weatherization. Step Up Suncoast’s comprehensive programming has made a positive impact in our community since its founding in 1968.

If our mission resonates with you, we encourage you to donate during the Giving Challenge on April 9 and 10, 2024, or through the Flanzer Trust, which is matching donations up to $3,000 in 2024. Please spread the word about our services! If you have questions about Step Up Suncoast or are interested in volunteering, please call us at 941-827-2887, email us at info@stepupsuncoast.org, or visit our website at StepUpSuncoast.org.
