public policy Chamber Priorities Move through Session
Pancakes & Politics Recap
As the Florida Legislature works through session, we track priority bills along committee stops, analyze proposed amendments, and continue our advocacy efforts to ensure that Manatee County remains a positive business environment while enhancing our community’s quality of life. Throughout the process, we focus on serving as a source of information for our elected delegation and often reach out to you, our membership, for feedback on potential changes to programs, projects, and priorities.
The Chamber held our annual Pancakes & Politics event on February 22. Although the event looked a little different through a Zoom lens, the value of the information shared and the priorities discussed remained the same. Members of our Manatee Legislative Delegation joined us bright and early to share insights on the upcoming session and answer member questions. Chamber supported priorities like liability protections from COVID related litigation, the collection of sales tax on all sales into Florida, affordable housing solutions, investments in workforce education programs and initiatives to meet critical employment needs, and measures to improve water quality were all raised as elected members prepare to head to Tallahassee for the 60 day session. To find out more about the Chamber’s legislative priorities, both state and federal, and to find contact information for elected officials, visit our website at ManateeChamber.com/ Advocacy.
The Manatee Chamber’s Legislative Committee serves as a key component of the process in sharing updates from Tallahassee, from their particular industries, and from their relationships with others in the legislative arena. While this committee meets primarily in the fall to develop our State and Federal Business Agenda, they can be called back together to discuss a new bill or a new issue that has suddenly come up through the legislative process. These kinds of partnerships make our Chamber advocacy stronger and enhance our ability to quickly respond to requests from elected officials, government agencies, and our members.
“These kinds of partnerships make our Chamber stronger and enhance our ability to quickly respond to requests from elected officials, government agencies, and our members.” This session we expect a focus on COVID related legislation both in substantive changes as well as budgetary decisions. Bills addressing liability protection for businesses and employers against COVID related litigation have been filed and are moving quickly through the approval process. 2020 highlighted that the state is not collecting revenue sales tax on all purchases into Florida and legislation has been filed to correct the issue and bring fairness for local businesses. Other areas of focus are education, including workforce development programs and initiatives, along with K-12 funding. Natural resources are a priority, with legislation filed on sea level rise resiliency and Everglades restoration, along with transportation including improvements to existing roadways and planning projects. The overarching issue that our elected officials will have to tackle that has been greatly impacted by COVID is the state budget. The one bill that the Florida Legislature is required to pass each year is a balanced state budget and that will prove particularly difficult this year. COVID brought challenges to many aspects of our economy including reduced consumer spending and a decline in tourism impacts to the state’s revenue sources, leaving our elected officials to determine how to assess and appropriate funds for the multitude of services and programs in Florida.
Casey Welch, USF, Representative Tommy Gregory, Senator Jim Boyd, and Representative Will Robinson joined more than 100 Chamber members via Zoom. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:

tech talk Protect Your Mobile Devices Jason Reed, Computer Science Instructor/Assistant Professor, State College of Florida
In today’s remote workforce, it is more important than ever to protect your company’s sensitive information on mobile devices. Malicious apps, unsecured wireless connections, and lost or stolen devices can compromise your company’s important information. According to the 2020 Cyber Security Report from Check Point Software Technologies, 2019 saw a steep increase in remote access attacks, mobile banking attacks, adware and ransomware targeting mobile devices. In 2021 Malwarebytes Labs reported that a popular and once legitimate barcode scanner app on Android phones was updated to become malware and began spamming potentially harmful links if the mobile phone’s browser. These types of vulnerabilities and attacks are set to increase as we become more dependent on our mobile devices. However, there are some simple steps that your organization can take to help prevent these attacks.
device. Saving login information to your mobile device can allow an attacker to access your banking accounts, company website and other important websites.
Ensure Your Mobile Device Is Secured
Secure Your Wireless Connections
A lost or stolen device can result in an attacker gaining access to customer information, nonpublic financial data, corporate strategies, and intellectual property. To prevent attackers from accessing this important information, make sure your mobile devices are set to automatically lock when not in use. To unlock the mobile device, require a strong password or biometric security, such as a fingerprint to access the device. Also, ensure that your mobile device is encrypted so that the information cannot be accessed and read without the password. Make sure to enable remote tracking and enable the device to be erased remotely in case it is lost or stolen. Lastly, do not save the login information to websites and apps to your mobile
Manage the Apps On Your Device
Apps introduce vulnerabilities that can result in an attacker gaining access to your device and the information on it. To minimize this risk, only download apps that are absolutely needed. Never download apps from an unknown source and only download them from the app store on your device, such as Apple Appstore or Google Play store. Make sure you keep the apps on your mobile device up to date to ensure they have the latest security patches. Lastly, make sure you go through the mobile device and delete unused or unneeded apps on a regular basis.
Unsecured wireless connections to your mobile device can result in attackers gaining access to your device or information. Unsecured wireless networks, like those found at restaurants or coffee shops, can allow attackers to intercept important information as it is transmitted over the network. Bluetooth connections can allow attackers to spread viruses and hack into your phone. To protect your device and information, make sure your device is not allowed to connect to unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Better yet, turn off the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they are not actively being used. If you must use a public Wi-Fi connection, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to encrypt your data going across the network and even then, do not send sensitive information.
Back Up the Data On Your Mobile Device
Backing up the data on your mobile devices is just as important as backing up information on your work computer. Mobile ransomware attacks are on the rise. Ransomware is when an attacker encrypts the data on your device and prevents you from accessing it. The attackers then demand that you send them money to unlock your important information. Regularly backing up your device will allow you to access that important information if you are subjected to a ransomware attack or if your device is lost or stolen. Following these simple steps can help protect your important information on your organization’s mobile devices.

Shadow Day – Bringing Area Students and Employers Together
Small businesses are the HEART of our community.
On February 26, the Manatee Chamber partnered with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus for Student Shadow Day. These events provide the opportunity for students to be matched with a business leader in their future industry or occupation. When they meet for a one-on-one discussion about career pathways, best practices, and other workforce and career development related advice, students are able to ask questions, receive relevant feedback, and grow their network. February’s event involved students interested in medicine, psychology, government affairs, commercial real estate, and sports management. Our business partners spent the morning talking with students and providing critical advice that students cannot find in a textbook or online. We appreciate our partners from Florida Power and Light, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Manatee County Rural Health System, SVN Commercial Advisory Group, and NAMI as well as our ongoing collaboration with the University of South Florida. Students received advice around remaining flexible, taking advantage of all opportunities, and the positive impact (both personally and professionally) of community engagement. Many participants were already working on next meetings outside of the Shadow Day event to continue to build these relationships including internship opportunities. The Manatee Chamber remains focused on building our talent pipeline and supporting workforce development initiatives so that your businesses and our economy are positioned for success. If you or your business would like to be a part of education and workforce initiatives or the Education and Workforce Partnership Committee, please contact Amy Farrington at AmyF@ManateeChamber.com.
Show your support by shopping with Highest Demand Jobs your fellow in Our Region chamber members. The updated “Where are the jobs?” guide provides easy

The Power of Who You Network With and the Relevance to Your Career Matters Take Advantage of These Tips from Local Experts
The Power of a Network – The Strategic Ally Doug Van Dyke | Leadership Simplified
Strategic allies are professionals that we know and who know us well. Plus, they are raving fans. They admire our professional skills and successes, just as we admire theirs. Make a list of your top 15 strategic allies. Cherish, cultivate and at least quarterly, inform them about what you are working on professionally.
Three Strategies to Grow Your Network and Net-Worth Velma Knowles | VelmaKnowles.com
Connect Based on Relevance Connect with people you have a mutual interest with; it’s about quality, not quantity. Know Your Connections as Individuals Relationships take time to develop, but the investment is worth it. People do business with those they know, like and trust. Value Your Relationships Keep in touch and share your expertise. Make more friends and you will build your influence.
Maximize Your Networking Experience Bring your business cards Focus on quality over quantity Listen and learn to see what you have to offer Focus on the relationship, not on “selling” your product or service Write notes on business cards to remember what you talked about Always follow up with those you meet Nurture those contacts to build real relationships
BONUS TIP: Remember value is all about perspective - theirs, not yours!
Why Networking Should Be an Essential Aspect of Your Career Tony Daum, CEO & Head Coach | EXCELLence Performance We live in a world powered by relationship. Networking allows us to show that we care, we listen, and are here to serve. People are increasingly doing business with people they like and trust. Networking lets us showcase that we are committed to building relationships and then doing business professionally.

My testimonial takes me all the way back to the late 80’s. Thanks to Business After Hours networking events, I was able to meet two go-getter individuals that introduced me to two other key accounts that I still have today. coffee club On behalf of the Manatee River Fair Association’s Board of Directors, it was our honor and pleasure to host the January Coffee Club. Each year, the fair provides an opportunity to promote our agricultural industry and heritage. We wish to express our sincerest appreciation to our staff, community volunteers, as well as you, the citizens of Manatee County, for your support and dedication in making each of these fairs even more memorable than the last. Every year, countless hours of time go into producing this annual event, which provides exceptional agricultural and artistic exhibits, an exciting midway, a wide variety of quality musical acts, as well as a multitude of ground and strolling acts, which entertain both the young and young at heart. While the precautions we put in place to address COVID-19 caused our 105th Manatee County Fair to be quite different this year, we are thankful for our community’s support and trust to make this year’s fair a success. business after hours The old adage of “better together” holds true as Willis Smith Construction successfully hosted the very first LIVE Business After Hours event of 2021! While following the CDC Guidelines additional steps were put in place to allow everyone to attend a “Night at the Swamp”. Expanding the outdoor area allowed for social distancing, inviting the Traveling Kitchen to roll up in their Food Truck serving all the guests delicious barbecue and specialty side dishes to only make them ask for seconds. A quick but informative “catch up” with Willis Smith delivered by our very own Nate Carr along with a special welcome from Kim Dalglish as she highlighted future events and thanked everyone for their support. There were awesome gifts, games, and networking for everyone! All in all it was a magical evening under that Stars at the DJ Swamp Shack! Member Testimonial I have attended one Google and two Facebook seminars at the Manatee Chamber of Commerce. Due to the knowledge that I received, we were able to increase our SEO level from landing on page 10 of a category search to landing on page one and being the first or second on the listings. I would highly recommend attending the Chamber seminars. Great information that can help your company achieve success!
