on the cover The Importance of the Business Voice For more than 130 years, the Manatee Chamber has convened business people to research, discuss, debate, and formulate priorities for where policy needs to head at the local, state, and federal levels. In fact, it was the desire for business priorities to be heard that led to the formation of the Bradenton Board of Trade, one of the founding organizations of what is now the Manatee Chamber, in 1889. Those business leaders had three priorities: to guarantee daily steamboat mail service, a telegraph line to Tampa, and the faint hope of railroad transportation to some point on the river. It is telling that today, our priorities continue to include issues related to the infrastructure necessary to support business and economic growth. The Manatee Chamber continues to tackle tough issues and work diligently to build the community we love and create opportunities for jobs and growth. The "we" is all of us... your Chamber membership investment supports this important work and we could not do it without the involvement of more than 400 members on our 20+ committeess, task forces, and boards. And, if not the Manatee Chamber, then who will bring the voice of business to the table at all levels of government? Thank you for your support and membership!
Florida Legislative Recap on Business Priorities The focus of the Chamber’s public policy work is to build a positive business environment by advocating responsive legislation and regulatory practices as well as implementing programs to improve our area's business and tourism climates. Thanks to significant input and involvement by our members, we provide ongoing advocacy and serve as the voice of business, working with elected officials and agency staff at the local, state, and federal levels on issues affecting our community.
Chamber priorities for 2022 include workforce development, affordable housing, infrastructure, taxation, water quality, and more....
Our 20+ Chamber committees and task forces meet regularly to assess issues, develop policy positions, and provide a platform for hearing from our members on how we can effectively advocate. Several months ago, members of the Chamber’s Legislative Committee spent several days in Tallahassee, just prior to the start of the Florida Legislative Session, meeting with our locally elected representatives in the Senate and the House of Representatives, legislative staff, and policy heads from the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. We shared the Chamber's priorities and urged their consideration of local concerns. Fast-forward to March and our state government wrapped up its regular 2022 Legislative Session, approving the largest budget in state history totaling $112.1 billion. It includes substantial investments in education, environmental, and health care spending as well as pay raises for state employees. Overall, the 2022 regular session included: • 3,735 Bills filed • 1,896 Amendments filed • 4,324 Votes taken • 39 Floor Sessions, and • 285 Bills passed both chambers of the legislature

A number of Manatee Chamber priorities successfully made it over the finish line, including much needed financial assistance towards homeownership and other related housing programs. The legislature budgeted $100 million for a new revolving home loan program aimed at our hometown heroes including our firefighters, law enforcement officers, teachers, and nurses. They approved extending important tourism support via VISIT Florida, improvements to water quality, expanding telehealth, as well as significant post-secondary investments in STEM as a way to grow our workforce. Other legislative priorities headed to the Governor include expansion of broadband access in underserved areas and investments in infrastructure. The Chamber's Legislative Committee serves as a key resource by sharing perspectives from their industries as well as considering the impact of issues on the entire business community and our area's quality of life. This committee meets primarily in the fall to develop our State and Federal Business Agenda, which then goes to the Chamber's Board of Directors for review and approval. The committee is often called upon to research and discuss a new bill or a new issue that has come up suddenly through the legislative process. The commitment of these members make our Chamber stronger and enhance our ability to quickly respond to requests from elected officials, government agencies, and our members. We will start developing our 2023 Business Agenda this fall, in preparation for the next legislative session (scheduled to start in March 2023). We need input from our members on issues that impact our community, policies that are barriers to continued economic expansion, and proposals that create an environment to support our members' ability to grow their businesses. For more information on the Legislative Committee or other committee and task force involvement, contact Tara Poulton at TaraP@ManateeChamber.com or 941-748-4842, ext. 124.

Chamber Members Make a Big Impact through Project TEACH On March 10, Chamber members and other volunteers headed back to the classroom thanks to Project TEACH, visiting 147 classrooms and reaching more than 3,000 fourth grade students. Now in its 29th year, Project TEACH (Teach Everyone About Career Horizons) is designed to help students begin to think about what they would like to be when they grow up. While many students can easily imagine being a doctor, veterinarian, star athlete, video game designer or even a YouTube influencer, there are many career choices right here in our community that they haven't learned about yet. We want attention on diverse options like high-tech manufacturing, skilled trades, business services, law enforcement, business ownership, hospitality, and so many others, too. The morning started with an Orientation Breakfast at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature and then volunteers headed to their classrooms. As an ice breaker they discussed the importance of first impressions, which was a fun segway into talking about their careers. The students then created businesses cards for their dream jobs. An important aspect of the program is to get the students to start thinking about what type of education they would need to get that dream job. Post-secondary education is important and with the great educational options in our region, students do not have to travel far to receive a great training and find a career. Special thanks to the Manatee Education Foundation for serving as the presenting sponsor and the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature for the beautiful backdrop for the Orientation Breakfast. If you are interested in volunteering for programs like Project TEACH or would like to be more involved with the Chamber’s education and workforce programs, please contact Tara Poulton at TaraP@ManateeChamber.com.

Chamber Hosts Job Shadow Day with USFSM Students The Manatee Chamber partnered with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus for a Student Shadow Day in February. It was an opportunity for students to be matched with a business leader in their future industry or occupation. They meet for a one-on-one discussion about career pathways, best practices, and other workforce and career development related advice. Students were able to ask questions, receive relevant feedback, and grow their network. February’s job shadow cohort involved students interested in medicine, accounting, banking, and cyber security. Our business partners spent the morning talking with students and providing a real world look at their industry. USF Sarasota-Manatee college senior Dakota Helgager learned about clinical research at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, senior accounting student Wendy Zabala Espinosa explored the world of budgets, inventories, and administration at the accounting and advising office of Carr, Riggs & Ingram. Students also received advice around remaining flexible, taking advantage of opportunities, and the positive impact (both personally and professionally) of community engagement. “It was interesting to see how the department works together with the community, and what’s behind the scenes,” said

I have par ticipated in Project Teach for over 8 years now. Each time it’s unique and different working with a new class of fourth graders. Their passion and enthusiasm is exciting. They are at an age where they are open and eager to please. To think I have the privilege of potentially influencing their future is a tremendous honor. The Big Bank Theory is another dynamic program for High School Seniors. Watching the light bulbs go off in their heads how being an adult is difficult and expensive is invaluable. Knowing that you are preparing them for the shock life has in store for them is important.

Chamber Annual Dinner Honored the Legacy of Business Leadership in the Greater Manatee County Region It was an evening of celebration that honored business leadership and the power of the mission of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce. Our 59th Annual Dinner offered valuable opportunities to connect, celebrate major accomplishments, and recognize the contributions of those who invest in our community in ways that build upon a legacy of business leadership. We honored outgoing Chairman of the Board Phill Baker for his many years of service to the Chamber. Phill's year at the helm was marked by a focus on helping local businesses respond to challenges and setting a vision for the Chamber's continued work in areas like supporting young professionals, building stronger partnerships, and connecting our members to resources. Phill's remarks at the Dinner included a challenge for us all to look within our own organization to find ways to lift up emerging leaders and encourage them to embrace opportunities to make an impact.
Mac Carraway, Carraway Consulting, was honored with the 5th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Oustanding Leadership. He is pictured with Chamber President|CEO Jacki Dezelski.
Rick Bisio was welcomed in as our 2022 Chairman of the Board with a ceremonial passing of the gavel. Rick called upon members to identify new ways to engage with the Chamber through committee participation. He recognized the incredible history of the Chamber and its place among the largest Chambers of Commerce in Florida - a state that, were it a country, would have the 15th largest economy in the world! The pinnacle of the evening was the presentation of the 5th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award to Mac Carraway. The honor recognizes a community leader who has made an impact in Manatee County well beyond their own company or organization. Mac was honored as a humble leader who has quietly led and influenced important initiatves on water quality and environmental stewardship, Forward Manatee efforts in support of the half-cent for infrastructure, and education, among many others. Mac is a past Chairman of the Board of the Manatee Chamber and was appointed by two Florida Governors to serve in leadership roles. Colleagues mention his wise, thoughtful counsel and incredible character as shining attributes. Congratulations and thank you, Mac!
Rick Bisio presented 2021 Chairman of the Board Phill Baker with the Outgoing Chairman's plaque in honor of his dedicated leadership.
And thank you to our members - the heart of the Manatee Chamber. Together we are stronger and together we can create an even better community in which to live, work, play, and own a business.

coffee club On behalf of the Manatee River Fair Association’s Board of Directors, it was our honor and pleasure to host the Chamber's January Coffee Club. Each year, the fair provides an opportunity to promote our agricultural industry and heritage. We wish to express our sincerest appreciation to our sponsors, who graciously provided monetary support, as well as in-kind service support that was necessary for us to present this year’s fair. We would also like to thank to our staff, community volunteers, as well as you, the citizens of Manatee County, for your support and dedication in making our 106th Manatee County Fair a tremendous success. Every year, countless hours of time and resources go into producing this annual event, which provides exceptional agricultural and artistic exhibits, an exciting midway, a wide variety of quality musical acts, as well as a multitude of ground and strolling acts, which entertain both the young and the young at heart. As we begin the preparations and planning for the 2023 Manatee County Fair, we invite you to consider partnering with us as either a volunteer or sponsor. We hope you enjoyed the January Coffee Club, and we look forward to hosting again next year. It was our great pleasure to host the Manatee Chamber Coffee Club in February. The friendly faces, delicious breakfast, and terrific door prizes made this an event to enjoy. General Manager Duane LaFollett, Vice President of Customer Relations Jeff Toale, and their team were on site to ensure Chamber members felt welcomed and were well fed. A big thank you to Sarasota Catering, Sugar Cubed, and Coffee Time Services for providing the delicious breakfast and beverages. Robert Toale & Sons Funeral Home at Manasota Memorial Park, part of the Dignity Memorial Network, has been dedicated to providing compassionate care to families for over a century. We offer funeral, cremation, reception, and cemetery services. Many families choose our location because of its close proximity to the Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch areas. Families plan services in our chapel or on the memorial park grounds including the Botanical Garden for Cremation. Our personal services have been nationally recognized as being the best and we strive to deliver the highest of care for every family. Please call us if we can ever be of help to you and your family. business after hours “Welcome to the DJ Swamp” was the theme of the evening as members and colleagues came together to celebrate 2022’s first networking social of the year. A welcome speech was given by John LaCivita, President of Willis Smith Construction, and he discussed the upcoming projects that the Willis Smith teams are building within our community. He invited everyone to experience the Downtown Waterside project just recently completed by the Willis Smith team in Lakewood Ranch. The most exciting news of the evening was the celebration of Willis Smith Construction's 50th anniversary. Chamber members enjoyed a mouth-watering barbecue dinner catered by TK Grill (Traveling Kitchen) and a fabulous sweet treat made by “Bite Me Cookies”. Members won outstanding door prizes, enjoyed siting by the fire at the Ash Hole while sipping on the spirit of their choice, and enjoyed ringing in the New Year!
