By Jacki Dezelski, IOM, President | CEO
The Florida Chamber Foundation recently released its July 2023 "By the Numbers" report. The data related to employment is likely not surprising to our Chamber member employers. Recruiting and retaining talent remains a challenge as businesses seek to grow and meet the demands of expanding markets across our state. Workforce development and business/education partnerships have been a priority of our Chamber for decades and will continue to be a top focus area.
I maintain that we are very fortunate here in the Manatee-Sarasota region thanks to the strength of our K-12 systems and our higher education institutions. The intersection of businesses, education, and non-profits results in effective, creative, and open partnerships where everyone is pulling together to build a sustainable talent pipeline for our region. Many efforts are underway, including the REACH Manatee collective for which the Chamber serves as a backbone organization to encourage collaboration and innovation.
One way you can support the success of our future workforce is through the Chamber's Big Bank Theory. We created this program as a direct results of our members' concerns related to the financial literacy of the workforce. The School District of Manatee County worked hand-in-hand with us to hone a curriculum that helps high school seniors experience "The Game of Life" on a larger scale than the board game with plastic cars and blue and pink pegs (ok, I am dating myself here as a proud Gen Xer). All high school seniors at our seven public high schools and SCF's Collegiate School will participate again this Fall. We will need more than 300 business volunteers - and we make it easy for you! Please read more on page 8 of this issue of the Current.
Another way you can make a difference is by sharing information about the coming changes to the FAFSA federal student financial aid application. Did you know that adult students may be eligible for federal student financial aid, not just graduating high school students? You may have employees seeking a certificate or degree who could benefit so please share this link with them: https://studentaid.gov/eligibility and see page 8 of this issue for an overview of ways individuals can prepare for the application now. And on a final note related to workforce, you'll find coverage of the Champions of Healthcare Awards and Small Business of the Year Awards in this issue. I suggest it is related because so many of the award winners mentioned their teams, co-workers, and partners as key to their success. For our Small Business Awards many of the judges comments included admiration and recognition of the efforts business owners were making to support their employees and honor their contributions to the overall achievements of the business. Congratulations to all of this year's honorees!
Tech Tip: Meta (Facebook/Instagram) Introduces Threads. Should You Jump on the Bandwagon?
By Kevin McNulty, NetWeave Social Networking
Meta's Threads app experienced an explosive first week, becoming the fastestgrowing app in history with an impressive 100 million users within five days. However, its growth has now slowed down, possibly signaling users' fatigue from the plethora of available social media apps or due to the app's rushed launch. It still lacks a lot of its intended functionality, and users may be waiting to see if that promise materializes. If you were hesitant about joining, it may be prudent to wait a little longer. If you have an Instagram account, your same username is reserved on Threads, eliminating the need to hurriedly create a new account just to grab the name. Wait-and-see may be your best strategy.

Chamber members volunteer in booths like this one to help students work through a monthly budget of expenses during the Big Bank Theory program. Students have the freedom to make choices about entertainment, clothing, dining out and more while also making decisions about housing, transportation, health insurance and other necessary expenses - all while balancing their choices with their randomly assigned "career" and monthly income.
Catherine and Ruben Ferrer and the team at Stronger Moving & Delivery Services, Inc. were recognized with the 2023 Small Business of the Year Award - Category IV. Read about all of our honorees on pages 18 and 19.

Chamber Committees Are the Key to Advocacy
Did you know that close to 20 committees, task forces, and councils directly support and impact the Chamber's public policy work as well as Chamber programs and events? Our members' involvement on committees is the foundation of our success in advocating business priorities to our elected officials and in developing new Chamber initiatives.
We are often asked "What committee should I join?" Our answer is that members should get involved on the committee that covers the topic you would like to learn more about and influence.
Do you want to build more resources for small business success? Join our Small Business Council. Interested in how businesses can support student success and strengthen our workforce? The Education & Workforce Partnership Committee could be a great match. Are you eager to add to the discussion on infrastructure? Join our Transportation Committee. These are just three examples of the efforts you can join as a Chamber member. For more information and to get connected to a committee, visit ManateeChamber.com/committees or send an email to JackiD@ManateeChamber.com.
Welcome to the Chamber Team!

Business Volunteers Needed for the Big Bank Theory: Dates Run October through December
The Chamber's Big Bank Theory program teaches teens the importance of budgeting, saving money, and prioritizing spending decisions. During the program, students are engaged in a hands-on, real-life financial simulation that introduces them to the realities of being financially sensible. They gain valuable experience paying bills and making daily decisions that are essential to being a responsible adult. And we need you to make it possible!
It takes hundreds of Chamber member volunteers to reach every high school and all 12th grade students. These high school students are our future workforce and your future employees!
If you are interested in volunteering (we make it easy!) please email Michele Jones at MicheleJ@ ManateeChamber.com to receive more information.
FAFSA: Impacting Our Future Workforce
Increasing completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a central initiative of REACH Manatee. The FAFSA is required for federal educational assistance and is used by technical colleges, 2and 4-year colleges, and universities to determine school-based financial aid for students. Approximately 4 out of 5 students in Florida use a combination of federal, state, and school-based aid to pay for college. REACH Manatee and the School District of Manatee County will partner again this year to offer nine FASFA completion workshops in January and February.
Did you know that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will not open until late December of this year? It usually opens on October 1st, but due to changes in the FAFSA application it will be delayed this year. Here's how to get ready now for the application:
• Students should ask their College and Career Advisor at their school when the FAFSA workshop is being held and save the date. There will be trained specialists there to help complete the FAFSA.
• Required documents and information needed to complete the FAFSA: These may include your Social Security number, driver's license, federal tax returns (or your parents' tax returns if you are a dependent student), W-2 forms, bank statements, and untaxed income records. Having these documents ready will make the application process smoother.
• Create an FSA ID: The FSA ID is a username and password used to access and sign the FAFSA online. Students, parent(s) or guardian(s) all need an FSA ID. Visit the Federal Student Aid website (studentaid. gov/fsaid) to create your FSA ID in advance.
• Research federal aid programs: Familiarize yourself with the different federal aid programs available, such as grants, work-study programs, and federal student loans. Review eligibility requirements, terms, and conditions. This will help you make informed decisions when completing the FAFSA.
• Review the FAFSA application process by visiting the official FAFSA website (fafsa.ed.gov). This will help you complete the form accurately and efficiently.
"I had no idea rent was so much! That's how much groceries cost? What can I afford with my salary?"
Big Bank Theory volunteers visit Manatee County schools to guide hands-on activites designed to teach high school seniors about financial literacy.
• Explore state and institutional deadlines: Besides the federal FAFSA deadline, each state and college may have its own deadline for financial aid applications. Research and note the deadlines specific to your condition and the colleges you are considering. Apply as early as possible to maximize your chances of receiving aid.
• Complete the FAFSA promptly: Once the FAFSA opens in late December, complete it as soon as possible. Some financial aid programs have limited funds awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. By submitting FAFSA early, you increase your chances of receiving aid and may have access to more options.
• Double-check all information before submitting your FAFSA to avoid errors or delays. After submission, review your Student Aid Report (SAR) for accuracy and make any necessary corrections.

The Manatee Chamber named its 2023 Champions of Healthcare at a celebratory awards event on June 15. With a crowd of more than 300 people in attendance, 57 nominees, 22 finalists, and 9 award winners were honored.
“We received tremendous support for the Champions of Healthcare Awards again this year,” said Jacki Dezelski, President and CEO of the Manatee Chamber. “We celebrate the important work so many people, programs, business and institutions are doing in Manatee County to support healthcare access and delivery, particularly work that is above and beyond anyone’s ‘day job’. The awards are designed to recognize impact, excellence, and dedication. The Champions of Healthcare Awards has become a signature program and this year’s event is a testament to the amazing work being done in our community. We were moved to tears because of the generosity and service we heard about during the program.”
Plans are already under way for next year’s awards, and it is not too early to begin thinking about nominating a deserving individual, organization, business, or program for the awards. If you'd like to secure your sponsorship for the 2024 Champions of Healthcare Awards, please contact Misti Barnes at 941-748-4842, ext. 172.

This year there were more than 200 nominations with 85 moving forward in the award process. The 7 winners were chosen from among the 34 finalists.
Since the inception of this event, the Manatee Chamber has honored more than 150 local small businesses. In 2016, the awards program was expanded to include local non-profit organizations to recognize their operations and contributions to our community, workforce, and economy.
Congratulations to this year’s award winners!

Armed with needle and thread, the staff create products that tell stories. Whether you want to show off your brand or your school spirit, Ohana Embroidery will turn your wardrobe into a canvas, transforming ordinary garments into works of art. Weaving business and kindness together create the fabric of this award winner’s success.

Dr. André Lewis and his team are committed to making your child's visit a pleasant and comfortable one. Customer service is ultimately about connection. Business of the Year Award Winners
Stronger Moving & Delivery Service
Ruben Ferrer, Owner SMALL BUSINESS ~ CATEGORY IV
Stronger Moving & Delivery Service is a professional moving company providing a complete menu of services to clients from residential to commercial settings, logistics solutions like climate-controlled storage, and specialized services for interior designers, retail delivery, and warehouse receiving. The nature of their business requires a specific amount of advanced training and education, usually formal, and their crews are top-notch logistics professionals trained by people with 10+ years of experience.
Owner Ruben Ferrer is known for his extreme passion for his team. He applies lessons he learned from his uncle, who was a well-known musician, to his philosophy on customer service and his team, equating his staff to performers and his customers to an audience. When it comes to moves, every detail is important, and small mistakes matter, even if the customer is unaware.
Whether moving residential or commercial clients, the objective is to always exceed expectations. Ferrer says any recognition the company receives is for the team and the people they’ve helped. He says “simply being nominated feels like a win”. In this case, he has now won twice.
Healthy Teens
Jonathan Evans, Executive Director NON-PROFIT ~ CATEGORY I
Healthy Teens is dedicated to empowering local youth to make positive, healthy decisions and to providing solutions to youth health issues in our community. Their model is peer-based where high school students become Teen Health Educators allowing them to educate and mentor at-risk youth on critical health topics. Healthy Teens is a shining example of success through partnership and collaboration. Local health professionals, business owners, and leadership experts provide pro-bono services to support the Healthy Teens mission. While each component is crucial, this organization has been exemplary in recognizing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. They have developed strong partnerships with local government and several Manatee County non-profits and businesses including the Florida Department of Health, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Manatee County, Hope Family Services, Game On Nation, and Centerstone to name a few.
Healthy Teens is completely youth-centered, partnering teen educators with at-risk teens to increase the likelihood of successful outcomes. Actively collaborating with many local organizations ensures a comprehensive approach to supporting vulnerable youth in our community. Simply put, Healthy Teens provides a community platform so that teens can help other teens.
One Stop Housing
Mark Vengroff, Owner SMALL BUSINESS ~ CATEGORY V
While many companies in our area are focusing on the challenges of recruiting, One Stop Housing is focused on one of the most fundamental challenges of growth - affordable housing. As an industry leader in the development, construction, and management of affordable workforce rental housing, this team not only offers a wide variety of convenient, affordable rentals but also creates stronger communities through transformative multi-family development work.
Their proactive approaches are mitigating the impacts of inflation, so clients are barely affected by price increases. In the wake of significantly rising rental costs, One Stop Housing only increased its monthly rent by $25-50 per unit this past year, keeping to their core values of being affordable/workforce housing.
Along with creating more workforce housing options, this team supports their tenants with resources for success including financial empowerment and health and wellness. Their non-profit, One Stop Housing Cares, provides educational, leadership, and financial support programs for residents of their communities.
As our community keeps growing, and affordability remains a crisis, One Stop Housing continues to step up to the challenge, offering solutions and providing housing security to vulnerable families.

Thank you for your interest in our programs and for the kind words in response to our important work. We couldn't do this without your support and look forward to building new partnerships with you.

These services are designed to assist individuals, families, veterans, and the elderly on their path to financial stability, independence, and good health. Over the past year, Turning Points assisted over 9,000 men, women, and children.
We invite you to join us on our mission. Bring colleagues or friends for tours of Turning Points. We would love to see you again - contact Margi to set up a tour at mdawson@tpmanatee.org.

Peace River Electric Cooperative was proud to host the Manatee Chamber’s June Coffee Club at Rosedale Golf & Country Club. We are thankful to partner with the Manatee Chamber and Rosedale Golf & Country Club to host this event whenever we can.
Peace River Electric Cooperative was started in 1940 by local residents who wanted to provide themselves with electricity. At that time, no investor-owned electric utility would serve sparsely populated rural areas since it would reduce their profits. Over 80 years later, our service area is now divided into 9 geographic districts, extending form Ruskin on Florida’s west coast to near Vero Beach on the state’s eastern shore. We service more than 61,000 homes and businesses in central Florida. Peace River Electric Cooperative maintains approximately 4,200 miles of overhead and underground power lines and have offices in Bradenton, Wauchula, and Indian Lakes. We currently have around 125 employees.
Peace River Electric Cooperative takes pride in partnering with the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and giving back to community through scholarships, charitable donations, and more. Thank you to all who attended the Coffee Club and we look forward to continuing our commitment to serving our community.

Member Testimonial
As a local independent business, NDC has grown along with the Manatee Chamber of Commerce over the past several decades. Being a part of the Manatee Chamber helps give credibility to a new business, and it helped NDC become an active and visible part of our community. Our local community is important to me, and contacts made through the chamber have been a supportive network of local companies and vendors who are also community minded. Local businesses working together not only helps each business, it also helps the community thrive and grow as well.
On a more personal level, some of the connections I have made with other Chamber members over the years are no longer simply acquaintances or colleagues, but people I truly count as friends. I also look to other chamber members when I need a local service for my home. The Chamber has been and remains a network for my business, a resource for my home and connections with other people who are important to me personally.
- Ron Allen, NDC Construction Company & NDC Development Company
