With the largest membership in the Tampa Bay region, the Manatee Chamber is built upon more than 130 years of business leadership. As we look forward to a strong finish for the second half of 2021, it's important to recognize how far we have come. In this issue of the Current, you will find a recap of our Chamber's 58th Annual Dinner and bestowal of the 4th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership. The evening truly felt like a celebration - a recognition of how much our community and world has overcome during the past year and a half. But, our resilience is built upon much more than just what this pandemic has thrown at us. It is built upon the efforts and leadership of people!
®
The Manatee Chamber traces its roots to 1889 with the founding of the Bradenton Board of Trade. At that time, business leaders had three goals: to guarantee daily steamboat mail service, a telegraph line to Tampa, and the hope of railroad transportation to some point on the Manatee River. For more than 130 years, the organization that is now known as the Manatee Chamber of Commerce has tackled tough issues and worked diligently to build the community we love today. That work is done by business leaders who reach out to connect and collaborate. It is fascinating to me that those original goals of the Board of Trade so clearly tied the economic health of our community to improved quality of life, business-friendly policies, valuable connections, and investment in infrastructure that supports the growth of businesses. Those same priorities are at the heart of our mission today. In June we also celebrated that our Chamber was again listed as #1 on the Tampa Bay Business Journal's ranking of Chambers of Commerce, as measured by the number of firms investing in membership. Our members ARE the Manatee Chamber. From networking opportunities to enhanced visibility to access to experts in many fields, membership delivers plenty of direct ROI. What may be immeasurable, though, is the value of having more than 400 Chamber members participating on almost 20 committees, task forces, councils, and our Board of Directors to shape the future for all of us. Thank you for the investment you and your company make in the legacy of business leadership in our community.

--In her own words: "I am thrilled to be back working in Manatee County and on staff with the Manatee Chamber! I first become involved with the Chamber in 2006 when I served on the MYP Board. I am a 2008 Leadership Manatee graduate and served as President of the Leadership Alumni Association Board. I also served on the Chamber Board as an ex-officio member, representing the Water Management District, and many of the same committees that I’ll be working with in my new role! I can even credit the Chamber for introducing me to my husband, Bill, in 2009!" --Favorite Place in Manatee County: Now that my daughter doesn’t need training wheels, we love biking to Adventure Park in Lakewood Ranch and utilizing the many nature trails around our neighborhood.

Molly has joined us for a summer position focused on REACH Manatee initiatives supporting increased attainment of postsecondary credentials for our current and future workforce. --In her own words: "I am so excited to collaborate with the Chamber this summer because it is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with my community having been away for the last four years while at college. In particular, the educational outreach work of REACH Manatee is meaningful to me because I have now seen the doors post-secondary education can open and want those opportunities available to all of my community members." --Alma Maters: Lakewood Ranch High School (2017) and Duke University (2021), Bachelor of Arts in International Comparative Studies and Global Health, Minor in Psychology --Favorite Place in Manatee County: 52nd Street beach access on Anna Maria Island

An Evening of Celebration and Connection
More than 600 Chamber members gathered to honor business leadership in our region through the Chamber's mission and Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership. Many people commented on it... the energy in the room at the Chamber's Annual Dinner in June was off the charts. With as much uncertainty as our community and world has endured, there was a deep sense of certainty in how much the PEOPLE in our community matter. It was a celebratory evening full of expressions of gratitude and optimism. 2020 Chairman, Ernie Withers, General Manager for MercedesBenz of Sarasota, was honored for his leadership during a year where everything was anything but ordinary. Ernie's steady guidance, deep community connections, and his "heart to help" added to the legacy of the Chamber and our mission in serving businesses and our community.

Phill Baker, Vice President of Boyd Insurance and Investment Services, offered his thoughts as 2021 Chairman of the Board. Phill emphasized the Chamber's ongoing work and recognized the Board of Directors for their determined focus on how the Chamber can continue to evolve in delivering on our mission. He ended with stating, “We learned a lot during the past fifteen months about how we can build an even stronger ecosystem to support local businesses. I am excited about the work ahead and look forward to sharing more successes with you at our next Annual Dinner!” Barry Banther joined us for an inspiring keynote address entitled 'A Heart to Help… The Secret to Your Career, Your Family, Your Life.' Everyone in attendance heard important takeaways from his message and one thought he shared really resonated: "It’s about business, it’s about networking… that’s what brings people to the Manatee Chamber, but it’s not what keeps them there. It’s not
what brought you here tonight, it’s community. This is a Chamber that is uniquely committed to community." Amanda and John Horne, owners of the four Anna Maria Oyster Bars, were honored with the 4th Annual Robert P. Bartz Leadership Award. Bob Turner presented them with this award by saying, “Better Together is the Chamber’s theme this year. There is probably not a better example of that than John and Amanda Horne. Though dynamic individuals in their own right, they are unbelievable together. Imagine -- one plus one equals amazing. They don’t seek recognition, yet their wellintended actions have brought them many accolades. I think the more important thing to them is they have been able to ignite that community spirit in others and that is the essence of the Bob Bartz Award.” Ernie Withers presented the Chairman’s Award to Dr. Jennifer Bencie from the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County for the incredible, tireless work she and her team have carried out in helping our community face and overcome the many challenges of the pandemic. Dr. Bencie reached out to the Chamber early on so that we could be an effective partner to reach businesses and their employees with critical information and resources. Thank you to the more than 600 business and community leaders who were in attendance to celebrate the Chamber’s more than 130-year history of building a positive business environment while enhancing our community’s quality of life. It is because of the investment and involvement of our members that we are able to continue this mission, and we thank each and every one of you!

the Phill Baker, Vicki Bartz, and Bob Turner, who was honored with the 3rd Annual Bartz Award, joined John and Amanda Horne on-stage to celebrate their selection as this year's honorees. The award honors the legacy of the late Bob Bartz, who was President of the Manatee Chamber for almost 35 years and whose leadership profoundly impacted Manatee County.

While our in-person, ceremonial "passing of the gavel" came a little late this year, the importance of 2020 Chairman Ernie Wither's leadership and 2021 Chairman Phill Baker's vision for the Chamber's work has been at the forefront. Our Annual Dinner was a meaningful time to update our membership on the many news ways the Chamber served local businesses during the pandemic and how we will enhance our robust program of work in the future as we respond to new opportunities.

The Humane Society of Manatee County is a 501 (c) 3 not for profit animal welfare organization that was originally formed in 1970, and today is considered as the lead animal welfare agency in Manatee County. Humane Society of Manatee County operates a no-kill shelter, the Second Chance Adoption Center located at 2515 14th Street W. and a veterinary clinic / high volume spay and neuter clinic at 2415 14th Street W. in downtown Bradenton. Each year the Second Chance Adoption Center rehomes more than 1000 dogs and cats through our comprehensive rehabilitation and adoption program. Many of the animals that enter our adoption program are medically challenged or have behavioral challenges. Each animal in our adoption center receives the highest quality care, medical care and behavioral assessment and training to complete the rehabilitation process resulting in a successful adoption into a new loving home.
It was our pleasure to host the May 27th Manatee Chamber Coffee Club! Conley Buick GMC Subaru is a 3rd generation family-owned business and is proud to be a part of the fabric of this community. For the Conley family, it’s more than car buying. It’s building relationships, community contribution and impacting lives.
In September of 2015, Humane Society of Manatee County opened a 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art veterinary clinic and high volume Humane Alliance Model spay and neuter clinic. Our veterinary clinic is open to the public by appointment and provides high quality, low-to-moderate cost veterinary care to ensure that this care is available to all cats and dogs in our community. The services available at Humane Society of Manatee County Veterinary Clinic continue to expand to meet the growing needs of the animals in our community. In addition to the wellness services that have expanded beyond vaccines and basic exams, our clinic now offers diagnostic exams, heartworm testing and treatment, dentals for both dogs and cats, digital radiography (x-ray), walk-in wellness and vaccine clinics and numerous surgical procedures. Current clinic clients can also purchase low cost pet meds, flea, tick and heartworm prevention online or at the clinic.
If you did not have the opportunity to join us for this event, we hope you will stop by Conley Subaru and see it for yourself. The building features artwork by two local artists, a doggie relief area for our furry friends, and many other aspects we are sure you will enjoy.
As we’ve navigated the pandemic over the past 18 months, like many organizations, Conley Buick GMC Subaru has had to adapt. We’ve been unable to host and be involved in many of our normal community events. This is one reason why the opportunity to host the May Manatee Chamber Coffee Club at our new state-of-the-art Subaru building was such a pleasure. We were joined by nearly 100 Chamber members who were able to enjoy the new facility, fellowship with one another and enjoy an amazing breakfast by Cracker Barrel Catering.

business after hours What a great experience partnering with the Compass Hotel by Margaritaville at Anna Maria Sound! The venue could not have been more perfect for Pirates and a touch of Margaritaville! With an unprecedented 137 attendees, there were many opportunities to network. Some great connections were made. The buffet was courtesy of some of our other community partners, which is the only way we can make any of our events successful. The Team Compass we worked with to make this event possible, France Langan-General Manager, James Ingram- Concierge/Food and Beverage and Andrew Wright- Director of Sales, were great to work with and very supportive. We hope that through our involvement with the Manatee Chamber, our community will be reacquainted with all that we do. Thank you!
