The Better Business Council (BBC) is a program of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce that offers referrals for local businesses that are members of the Council, acts as a resource for consumers, and publicizes important scam information. Consumers can contact the BBC for referrals of local businesses. BBC members have been pre-screened and have publicly pledged to adhere to a higher standard of business and we proudly refer business their way.
• License Verification
Not sure if your contractor is licensed or required to be licensed by the State of Florida? Call the BBC or contact the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations at 850-487-1395 or www.myfloridalicense.com.
• Resources for Insurance Requirements
Make sure your contractor carries the correct insurance for the type of job required. Are they required to carry insurance and what type of insurance do they have? Do they carry insurance on their commercial vehicles and/or Worker’s Compensation insurance? The BBC may be able to answer these questions or direct you to the right resource.

It is illegal to hire an unlicensed contractor in the state of Florida, carrying a fine of up to $5,000.
While hiring and unlicensed contractor may provide a quick fix in the short term, it could result in serious and lasting negative consequences. Licensed contractors have taken the time to acquire the appropriate education and the proper worker’s compensation and/or liability insurance and possess the necessary experience for their profession.
It is extremely important to be cautious when contracting for home improvements and repairs. Educate yourself, become an informed consumer, and protect yourself from dishonest persons who will use your misfortune to their advantage.
• Unlicensed contractors often target the uniformed and inexperienced, as well as the elderly.
• They solicit door-to-door, frequently traveling in unmarked vehicles.
• After a storm or other emergency their might be an increase in unlicensed contractor activity in that area, so use extra caution.
• They give a post office box address instead of a street address.
• They are responsible for obtaining the necessary building permits.
• Avoid paying cash and any contractor who requires full payment in advance. Arrange to pay after the contractor completes the work or in agreed-upon installments.
• Do not sign off tat work is completed until all work is finished according to your contract, and the contractor has cleared all permits with final inspection approval from the building department.
• If your contract exceeds $2,500, become familiar with the Florida Construction Lien Law.

What Does is Mean to be a Better Business Council (BBC) Member?
Members of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce who have been in business locally for at least 12 months are eligible to apply for membership. Businesses must submit a completed application including license and insurance information, local references, and a signed agreement pledging to adhere to the BBC “Code of Ethics”. Each application is thoroughly reviewed, all information is verified, and references contacted prior to membership approval.
