Gold Investors
on the cover
As we close out 2022, we asked outgoing Chairman of the Board Rick Bisio, President of The Educated Franchisee and an international expert on franchising, to share a few thoughts about his time at the helm of the Board as well as his two decades of involvement with the Chamber.
Rick led the Board during a year of growth - for the Chamber and our community. His steady leadership, collaborative spirit, and international perspective helped the Chamber build on a 130+ year foundation of the business community responding to the most pressing issues in our region. We surpassed the 2,100 membership mark and brought back several programs that had been stalled due to the pandemic. Here are a few thoughts about the Chamber, in his own words:
Favorite Chamber Event: I would say that my favorite event is the Annual Leadership Retreat. It is a chance to really get to know folks and build relationships.
Favorite Chamber Program: Leadership Manatee is an amazing program and cornerstone to understanding our community. The Big Bank Theory is awesome and I love to see the light go on for these students. Our Holiday Coffee Club is so much fun with the children’s choir. And the golf tournament is a great event with friends. The fact is, the Manatee Chamber has so many wonderful networking and educational events that it really is hard to choose!
How has involvement in the Chamber impacted your view of our community?: Prior to my involvement with the Chamber, I never really understood how interconnected our community is and how hard our leaders work to maintain a positive, forwardlooking community. We are truly lucky to have so many people who are willing to dedicate both time and treasure to making Manatee County as strong as possible.
Why did you choose to give so much time and talent to the Chamber?
For me, the Chamber is the obvious choice. Collectively, we are so involved in so many parts of our community. In addition, I feel a debt of gratitude to those Chamber leaders who wrapped their arms around me 20 years ago and welcomed me both to Manatee County and to the Chamber. I will be forever grateful.
Advice to a new Chamber member on how to jump start their membership: Get involved. Find a Chamber committee that you have a passion for and show up. Add your voice to the conversation and you will be able to make an impact. At the same time, getting involved allows you to make new friends throughout Manatee County. You will get out of the Chamber what you put into
- although we do a lot for our members without them ever needing to attend an event!
Special thanks: I would like to thank the board and the Chamber staff for doing an amazing job this year. I would also like to thank my wife for being patient with me during this very busy year. Finally, I would like to thank Bob Bartz, Marie Pender, and Neil Spirtas. You all were the spark that made this happen.

Chamber Advocacy: The Voice of Business
The Chamber’s Public Policy division, with the support of our members, provides ongoing advocacy and assistance to our local governments and regional authorities. The Chamber’s Public Policy committees meet monthly to assess the issues affecting our community, develop policy position recommendations, partner on initiatives that provide a voice for the business community, and craft a platform for effective advocacy.
The Chamber's Legislative Committee pulls together priorities from all of this committee work and creates the Manatee Chamber’s Business Agenda. This agenda is the foundation for our state and federal advocacy work. This coming February, the committee will spend time in Tallahassee presenting the priorities to our Florida House and Senate representatives as well as members of the Cabinet and the Department of Transportation.
It is critical that government and business work together for the benefit of the entire community. The Manatee Chamber, through our leadership and member engagement, is focused on advocacy on your behalf so that your attention can remain on growing and expanding your business.
Before our State Senators and Representatives head to Tallahassee for the start of the 2023 legislative session in March, we want our members to have the opportunity hear from them directly. Our annual Pancakes and Politics Breakfast is scheduled

Makes a Big Impact
115 hours, 15 days, 440 volunteers, and over 3,000 high school seniors equate to another successful Big Bank Theory program! We focus on helping students strengthen their financial literacy skills to be better prepared for life after graduation.
Manatee County high school seniors at eight schools were given an opportunity to experience a “day in the life” of a 25-year-old with a job and bills to pay. There were more than 130 profiles that were randomly assigned to students with differing post-secondary achievement (think high school diploma vs. high quality technical certificate or college degree), job profiles, family dynamics, and related income levels - and it all impacted their montly budget.
From housing to transportation, food to childcare, students quickly learned the value of having a budget and differentiating between needs and wants. They navigated through 13 stations in all to complete the program.
Students were particularly surprised at the cost of childcare and health insurance. They also had not thought about utilities as being part of their living expenses. Some students were creative and roomed together to save on housing costs and some took a second job to help add to their monthly budget. They also had the option to register to vote and to create their FAFSA ID. Completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a high priority for our community to help more students qualify for financial support to attend college, univsersity, and technical college. This popular Chamber program started in 2010 and would not be possible without the help of our volunteers and sponsors - thank you!
Carman Thompson, with Hancock Whitney Bank, shares financial advice with Manatee High students during the Big Bank Theory program.

Empowers Students to Think about Their Future
REACH partners joined together to kick off the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) enrollment season with the 1st Annual MAPS Training in September at Manatee School for the Arts. The MAPS Ambassador Program aims to empower students to develop plans for post-high school education, engagement, and career success through peer leadership influence and support.
Student Ambassadors and the College and Career Advisors from local high schools met together to gain important information to take back to their peers on the topics like:
• What is the Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID completion goal for Manatee County?
• How can we use social media to promote completion?
• Demystifying FAFSA myths
• Talking to parents about FAFSA
• How mentoring/peer-to-peer influence can affect FAFSA completion
At the conclusion of the sessions, the students gathered together to decide on a theme for this year’s FAFSA completion goal for Manatee County. They chose "FAFSA to the Finish Line!" With these inspiring students leading the way, we will get there!
Thank you to the Manatee Education Foundation, NetWeave Social Networking, North River Youth Coalition, State College of Florida, Take Stock in Children, and UnidosNow for making these training sessions so successful.
Students will serve as peer ambassadors to help their schools "make it to the finish line" with FAFSA completion. Did you know that lack of financial support is one of the biggest barriers to local students attending college and technical school? With federal financial aid, it doesn't have to be!
Best Way to Help High School Seniors and Grads? Free FAFSA Workshops
REACH Manatee has been hosting several in-person and virtual FAFSA workshops for recent high school graduates and current seniors. FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid used to determine student federal aid eligibility and is used by schools for school-based aid. Filling out this form is a crucial step that students and families of all financial backgrounds can take toward making post-secondary attainment a reality.
REACH Manatee is our community’s collaborative effort to work towards increasing the amount of Manatee County residents with a post-secondary degree or credential. Please share this information
employees,
friends, and family. It could change a student’s future and positively impact our future workforce. For more information, please contact REACH Manatee at info@REACHManatee.org and visit REACHManatee.org

Business at the Ballpark
Chamber Expo - Great Networking, Local Business Promotion, and a Stellar Ballpark Atmosphere
Chamber EXPO 2022 – Business at the Ballpark - brought local businesses together to give attendees a look at what Manatee County businesses and non-profits have to offer. Exhibitors showcased their products and services at beautiful LECOM Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Bradenton Marauders.
Along with these exhibitor booths, complimentary tastings and samples were provided by nine different restaurant partners.Needless to say, no one went home hungry! Chamber members provided close to 100 door prizes which were given out throughout the evening, along with a grand prize: the Mayor’s Suite at a 2023 Bradenton Marauders game including 25 tickets and food and drinks.
Every attendee received a goody bag to load up with valuable swag and useful information about local businesses. Chamber Expo is one of our largest events of the year and a valuable way to promote shopping local and "shopping Chamber".

coffee club
We were honored with the opportunity to host the Manatee Chamber Coffee Club at Bradenton Christian School (BCS). Thank you to all who came out to learn about our school and our mission within the community. We hope you felt the heart and vision of our school while on our campus.
Bradenton Christian School is a Christ-centered college preparatory school, which includes dual enrollment, honors, and AP classes. Founded in 1960, it is the largest private Christian school in Manatee County and has a solid reputation for high standards in the community.
The BCS mission is to provide an excellent education rooted in God's Word, and to prepare the hearts and minds of God's children in partnership with the Christian community for service in God's world.
BCS offers Pre-School through 12th grade. We currently have 930 students enrolled. The campus rests on twenty-four acres and includes a Middle School Building, High School Building, Elementary School Building, Center for Fine Arts and Technology, and brand-new Athletic Center.
BCS is a 3A school and is a member of the SSAC (Sunshine State Athletic Conference). Interscholastic sports are offered at both the senior high and middle school levels including Basketball, Baseball, Beach Volleyball, Cross-country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Lacrosse, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball and Wrestling. We also have an awardwinning Fine Arts program with a wide array of music, performing, and studio arts that are offered.
The Bradenton Christian School experience creates well-rounded students who are attractive graduates for colleges and universities to pursue. Outstanding colleges and universities visit BCS annually to recruit our students and several have mentioned how much they love our students.
Go Panthers!

The Humane Society of Manatee County (HSMC) is growing to serve animals in need in our community. Our 10,000 sq. ft. Veterinary Clinic offers low cost spay/neuter (free if qualified), wellness, x-rays, state of the art dental procedures and is proud to announce our latest service: dermatology. The goal is to find the root cause of skin issues and treat to eliminate, not just mask, the symptoms. All of these services are offered at low to moderate cost to pet owners.
The Second Chance Adoption Center finds homes for more than 700 dogs and cats annually. Many of these animals have medical conditions that other area shelters are not able to treat. The dogs and cats in the shelter are cared for until they are adopted, no matter what the time period may be. In addition, more than 1,000 lbs. of food are distributed monthly through our Pet Food Pantry, helping those financially challenged owners with pet food so they do not have to surrender their beloved pets. We are grateful to our donors, volunteers and grantors, whose support allows us to care for the thousands of owned and homeless dogs and cats that come through our doors every year.
Thank you Manatee Chamber members for taking time out of your busy schedules to stop at The Humane Society of Manatee County’s Business After Hours event. We love hosting this event to showcase the continued expansion of our HSMC campus made possible by the amazing support of our community. You, the members, are such an important part of this community and we are so proud to be members of the Manatee Chamber.

A Behind the Scenes Look at Our Cover Photoshoot
It seemed fruitful (and sunny) to photograph 2022 Chairman of the Board Rick Bisio in his element. Rick opened his home, providing an intimate view of his island lanai, his business, and his hobby - horticulture. We chose the blue tiled pool area surrounded by gardens and potted plants, many of which were nurtured by Rick from seed, as the backdrop. It was windy enough to make capturing the perfect shot a challenge, but the warm weather, a festive set, and a few necessary props, made for a successful cover art collaboration.

A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN IN MANATEE COUNTY
EMPLOYERS, Did You Know? Volunteering doesn't just help others. It improves your organization! Employees who volunteer and feel good about where they work tend to:
• Take pride in their company
• Learn better critical thinking skills
• Enhance problem-solving skills
So, if you want a purpose-driven and engaged workforce, consider your staff for volunteering for ReadingPals!
COMMUNITY MEMBERS, Did You Know? In just 60 minutes, you can make a difference in the life of a child. In 2022:
• 50% of children in Florida are NOT ready for Kindergarten
• 47% of students cannot read at a minimally proficient level by the end of 3rd grade
• Early intervention and individualized attention give students the best likelihood of success
In ReadingPals, you will mentor VPK (4-year-old) students at local child care sites to positively influence students' understanding of the fundamental building blocks of early literacy. These relationships that the mentors build with the students enhance a solid social-emotional foundation for young learners.
And that's something we can all feel good about!
