from the president Your Membership Matters! By Jacki Dezelski, IOM, President | CEO
As the year comes to a close, your Chamber is not slowing down. In fact, our team is working at a meteoric pace to ensure that several of our signature member opportunities deliver value and make an impact as we end 2023 and enthusiastically start 2024. • The Big Bank Theory program will finish strong at Parrish Community High School and help our local students strengthen their financial literacy skills. Overall, we will have reached approximately 3,000 students this year. • Our Pancakes & Politics annual legislative preview breakfast will connect our members with the state elected officials representing Manatee and Sarasota Counties so that the voice of business is heard in Tallahassee ahead of the January 9 start to the Florida legislative session. • The 2023-2024 Leadership Manatee class will complete its StrengthsFinder activity to help each individual capitalize on their unique leadership skills to make a difference in their businesses and our community. • Our Holiday Coffee Club, December Business After Hours, and annual Golf Tournament will offer valuable networking opportunities and offer effective marketing strategies for our members. • Our final Headliners luncheon of 2023 will feature of "State of the County" address with County Administrator Charlie Bishop and members of his County staff leadership team will share how the vision of the County Commission is being implemented and what's on the horizon for the new year. • And, we will host one heck of a picnic at the Chamber's Lakewood Ranch office for our Member Appreciation Cookout; it is an event you do not want to miss! All of this - and much more - happens because you choose to invest in the Chamber's mission with your membership. THANK YOU for making our extensive program of work possible. We stand ready to help you achieve even greater success in the new year. I wish you peace and much joy this holiday season and share my gratitude for all that you make possible.

education & workforce Big Bank Theory Reaches 3,000 Students Manatee County high school seniors were given an opportunity to experience a “day in the life” of a 25-year-old with a job, possibly a family, and a monthly budget full of bills to pay. The Chamber's goal with the Big Bank Theory program is to build awareness of and strengthen students' financial literacy skills. They quickly learned the value of having a budget and differentiating between needs and wants as they found housing, bought a car (or bus pass), and decided between name brand or store brand groceries, among other adult spending decisions they faced. In total, students navigated through 15 stations to complete the program. As they considered their monthly budgets, students were particularly surprised at the cost of childcare and rent. They also had not thought about utilities being part of their living expenses. Some students were creative and roomed together to save on housing costs.
One volunteer shared this observation, "I was expecting the students to be more unrealistic at the beginning of the experience, but they came into the whole program taking it very seriously and making very thoughtful decisions." Another volunteers said, "One student said 'Wow, this adulting is hard!'" And one volunteer shared this interaction: "A student texted a picture of their budget sheet to their parents and said 'How do you guys do it?'" The Chamber has presented the Big Bank Theory program in our high schools since 2010 and this year we reached eight high schools with 3,000 enrolled 12th grade students. It would not be possible without the help of our many volunteers and generous sponsors - thank you!
Students are randomly assigned one of more than 150 profiles and a big "a-ha" moment accurs when they compare their profile to those of their classmates. Their monthly budgets vary significantly based upon their credential or degree and their job. PRESENTING SPONSOR:

on the cover Manatee Chamber Is Hitting It Out of the Park!
Thank You to Our 2023 Chairman of the Board Jeff Podobnik, Pittsburgh Pirates / Bradenton Marauders Favorite Chamber event: Hands down, my favorite Chamber opportunity is the Annual Leadership Retreat. This is an event where you can build lasting relationships while creating the vision for the Chamber of Commerce for the up and coming year. The networking, the speakers, the small group discussions, and the venue - it all adds up to a unique and valuable leadership experience. But, you must be engaged with the Chamber on a committee, council, or board, or through our Chairman’s Circle to attend the Retreat, so it’s a great reason to get even more involved! Favorite Chamber program: Leadership Manatee - Whether you are a lifelong Floridian or newcomer to our region, you will learn something new about Manatee County, develop important connections with other leaders, and find new ways to get involved. How has involvement in the Chamber impacted your view of our community?: 31 years ago Bob Bartz and the Manatee Chamber of Commerce taught me how important our community is for small businesses and all businesses in general. Building relationships and giving back to your community is a vital aspect to growing your business. Advice to a new Chamber member on how to jump start their membership: Simple…Reach out to any of the awesome, professional staff members of the Chamber and have a conversation about who you are and what your core business is all about. They then can guide you on what committees to begin to get involved in. And, it goes without saying, show up to several of the vast networking opportunities that the Chamber offers from Coffee Clubs to After Hours to annual events. Why did you choose to give so much time and talent to the Chamber?: Because it is the number one organization to begin to get involved in our beautiful community that we call Manatee County, Florida. Is there a quote that is meaningful to you when you think about the Chamber and its impact?: My personal mantra this year as Chairman of the Board has been “Go big or go home!” I really do say it all of the time. Not only have I used it to challenge the board and staff team to consider how we can take it to the next level, it is also how the Manatee Chamber has always approached things. There is such a high standard for making an impact and serving our members. This Chamber always goes big! Any highlight from your year as Chair that particularly stands out or of which you are super proud?: When Jacki and I first met in January she was so excited about winning the Florida Chamber of Commerce of Year for the fifth time in late 2022. I was certainly excited for our Chamber, but my first question to her was, “What are we going to do for the staff to maintain this level of excellence?” From that conversation, we developed a leadership/professional development strategy for the Chamber to help them grow as a team and to focus in on ... the Manatee Chamber of areas of personal professional development, too. Special thanks you’d like to share: First, to my wife Amy who stands by me and supports me each and every day and for dealing with all those times that I would say “I will be home late, I have a Chamber event”! Next, a huge thank you to the awesome Pirates Florida operations/Marauders staff that probably enjoyed me being out of the office so much! To my three boys, Tyler ( daughter in law Alex, grandkids Sadie and Hugh), Cooper, and Joshua - thank you all for your support!
“
Commerce taught me how important our community is for small businesses and all businesses in general.

61ST ANNUAL
DINNER and 7th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership
The Chamber's Annual Dinner & Bartz Award celebration brings together more than 500 of our region's top business, community, and government leaders. It is an evening of stellar networking honoring the 130+ year legacy of business leadership in the greater Manatee County region. It is also a celebration of personal leadership and service. We will honor John Vita with the 7th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership. John shared this upon learning that he would be honored with the Bartz Award, "I am honored and humbled to be named to receive the award that was set up to remember and honor the legacy of my good friend Bob Bartz. He was an amazing mentor to me when I first started my practice in Bradenton and grew to be an influential friend in my life. Being a part of the Manatee Chamber under Bob’s leadership taught me about the power of commerce in our community and how, when people work together, we all benefit through the power of business. Additionally, the Chamber provides us all with an opportunity to be excellent business people and to help those who are new to our community, or new to business in general, to thrive." We will also honor Outgoing Chairman Jeff Podobnik, welcome Incoming Chairman Janelle (Esposito) VanHoose, Esq., and celebrate many Chamber accomplishments. We want to celebrate with you! business after hours Feeding Empty Little Tummies was honored to host the Manatee Chamber’s October Business After Hours. Thank you to Clark Financial Partners, Harbor Chiropractic, and Knight’s Mobile Service & Towing for co-hosting this event with us. We had a wonderful turnout from Chamber members, many of whom brought much needed food donations to help fill backpacks for local children. At Feeding Empty Little Tummies (FELT) we are dedicated to ending childhood hunger by providing weekend meal backpacks to homeless and food insecure students. Our partnerships enable us to serve children who would otherwise go 60+ hours with no nutrition. We are currently feeding more than 1,500 students at an approximate cost of $15,000. We welcome your support, whether it’s financial, food, or volunteer donations, as we continue to serve children and as the need continues to grow.

The Cover Shot
News to Share? NEW HIRES PROMOTIONS SPECIAL AWARDS
It's always a "go big or go home" event when Jeff Podobnik is involved and this issue's cover shoot was no exception. The entire team pitched in to get the field game-ready with a trimmed tree on the LECOM Park homeplate. Marty, the Marauder's mascot, had the honor of placing the star atop the team's tree. A huge thank you to Rana Tierney of Roohi Photography for catching the winning cover photo.
