about the chairman With Gratitude for Humble Leadership Thank You to Phill Baker, Outgoing Chairman of the Board
As 2021 comes to a close we have much for which to be thankful. For our Chamber team, the cycles of Board leadership are a shining example of how people, working together, can make a difference as well as give meaning and energy to the Chamber’s mission. It is gratifying to know that, year after year, so many business leaders give of their time and expertise to further the Chamber’s mission in ways that positively impact all of our businesses and organizations. Phill Baker, Vice President at Boyd Insurance & Investment Services, is wrapping up his year as Chairman of the Board. It comes during a year in which Phill celebrated 40 years of service to the firm, his clients, and our community. His steady, thoughtful leadership will have lasting influence. Not a week went by this year that Phill wasn’t personally at the Chamber offices, touching base with our team - and often dropping off a homemade treat from his amazing wife Dianna or a hand-written note of encouragement. He is an incredible listener and follows through, always. His family and his faith are at the heart of all that he does. Phill’s leadership on our Board and Executive Committe has spanned years during which our Chamber and community experienced tremendous difficulties, but powerful opportunities, as well. Our membership has remained strong and committed and Chamber partnerships across our region have flourished. In considering his years of service, Phill shared these thoughts: Favorite Chamber Program: Manatee Young Professionals - I admire the energy and innovation of this amazing group. Many of our current leaders have migrated through MYP and it is very comforting to see so many future leaders being raised up, in part, by MYP. This close knit group truly inspires me! Favorite Chamber Event: The Annual Planning Retreat - It is a time to focus on our community and plan for the future. It is also a wonderful time to have so many local leaders in one place with one agenda: to make Manatee County the best possible place to live, work, play, and own a business. Every year we have many new faces join us at the Planning Retreat and it is good to get to know many of them. Much is accomplished at this signature leadership conference. Of course, the venue allows for a nice get-away for the family, too. Advice to a brand new Chamber member on how best to get involved and take advantage of membership: Attend ‘Biscuits & Benefits’ for a comprehensive and concise Phill and Dianna Baker at the overview of the many Chamber offerings. You will hear about member benefits that will Chamber’s 2021 Annual Dinner & pique your interest. Then jump in and give something a try. There is a fit for everybody and Bartz Award celebration. every business. Consider networking, serving on a committee, attending some of the Chamber’s informative seminars, reach out to students via one of the many Chamber volunteer opportunities in our schools, join in the fun events like the Golf Tournament, etc. You will be glad you did! Why have you chosen to invest so much time and effort to the Chamber’s mission? Connecting with the Chamber was easy. Serving on several committees opened my eyes to the incredible work the Chamber does in and for the business community. Making new friends and business associates naturally followed. Being in the midst of so many community giants motivated me to give my time and talents to the community by serving in the Manatee Chamber. Manatee County is where our family roots are and seeing it continue to become the place I love calls Members of the Boyd Insurance & Investment me to serve this incredible community. It has indeed been an honor to serve as Services team enjoyed networking at the Chairman of the Board. The leadership team in place is strong and well suited to Ship-Shape Showcase at Port Manatee. meet the challenges that lie ahead. Special thanks: It would be nice if new and innovative words could be penned to properly say ‘Thank You’ to the most amazing team at the Manatee Chamber offices. All the best adverbs and adjectives have already been used. So much of the good that comes to the Chamber Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Chairman of the Board and our community is a result of the strong and often brilliant support from the Chamber staff. They embody teamwork, confidence, quality and do so with the greatest of humility, giving the praise to others. How could you not love them all? THANK YOU!

public policy Chamber Advocacy: The Voice for Business The Manatee Chamber’s Public Policy division, with the support and involvement of our members, provides ongoing advocacy and assistance to our local governments and regional authorities. The Chamber’s Public Policy committees meet monthly to discuss the issues affecting our community and develop policy positions providing a voice for the business community and a platform for effective advocacy. Our Legislative Committee pulls together annual priorities from all of the committee work and creates the Manatee Chamber’s Business Agenda. This agenda is the foundation for our state and federal advocacy work. In November, the Committee spent a few days in Tallahassee and presented the priorities to several of our Florida House and Senate representatives as well as members of the Cabinet and the Department of Transportation. To download a copy of the Business Agenda, visit ManateeChamber.com/ Advocacy-Public-Policy or swing by either of our Chamber locations to pick up a copy. With the start of the 2022 Florida Legislative Session just weeks away, we hope you’ll join us for our annual Pancakes & Politics Breakfast scheduled for Thursday, December 9. This signature event, sponsored by Spectrum and Keiser University, is an invaluable opportunity to talk with our elected officials and let views and concerns be heard.
It is critical that government and businesses work together for the benefit of the entire community. The Manatee Chamber, through our leadership and our members, is focused on advocacy on your behalf so that your attention can remain on growing and expanding your business.

Project TEACH
REACH Manatee and its partners are hosting in-person and virtual FAFSA workshops for recent graduates, high school seniors and all those interested in pursuing post-secondary degrees. FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid used to determine student federal aid eligibility, gives you access to federal, state, and college-based sources to help you pay for your education. Filling out this form is a crucial step that students and families of all financial backgrounds can take toward making post-secondary education attainment a reality.
We want you to volunteer for Project TEACH! The Chamber will present the program at all area elementary schools on Thursday, March 10. Project TEACH is designed to increase career awareness among 4th grade students and stress the importance of first impressions. For many students, this is one of the first times they have had a business volunteer in their classroom and the first time they have been exposed to careers other than those of their parents.

Small Business Is Big Business The 2021 Manatee Small Business of the Year Awards was an incredible celebration of small businesses and non-profits in our community. We received 230 nominations recognizing organizations serving Manatee County for quality and excellence as exemplified by growth, productivity, customer service, job creation and overall contribution to the community. Seven award winners were announced from among 90 finalists at our sold-out event in November. “After the challenges of the past year and a half, today’s celebration feels even more important,” said Phill Baker, the Chamber’s Chairman of the Board, during his opening remarks at the event. “Local businesses and non-profits are an integral part of the fabric of our community, creating the unique culture that makes our area a fantastic place to live, work, play, and own a business.” All of the finalists exemplify the diversity, spirit, and community-mindedness that make Manatee County special and so successful. Small employers play a crucial role in building their businesses, creating jobs, growing our local economy, and bettering our community. “America’s progress is attributed to pioneers such as our finalists, people who think big, take risks, and work hard,” said Sherod Halliburton, Financial Access Federal Credit Union, the presenting sponsor of this year’s awards. Congratulations to our nominees, finalists, and award winners! At the Manatee Chamber, small business is BIG BUSINESS!

Healthcare Committee Identifies Resources for Employers: COVID-19 and Stress in the Workplace The COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll on businesses and staff members who may be experiencing levels of stress that they never imagined. “Mental Health Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Update,” a report posted to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) includes the results of a recent poll conducted on the subject of COVID-related stress.
“We encourage everyone, whether they face mental health or addiction issues themselves or know someone who does, to take a look at what’s available through the landing page,” said DOH-Manatee Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Bencie.
Almost half (47 percent) of those surveyed said they can tell that worry or stress related to the coronavirus has had a major or minor negative impact on their mental health. The leading causes of worry included fears of contracting the virus, losing a job and searching for childcare “Previous KFF analysis of the Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey from earlier this year shows the economic downturn has also led to mental health issues and increased abuse in the United States,” the KFF notes in its update.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers tips that Manatee businesses can share with employees who may be suffering COVID-related stress:
“There is also the loss of loved ones,” added Tima Midyette, a health educator at the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County (DOH-Manatee). “Each life lost to this disease can prove devastating to family and friends who choose to deal with the loss either outwardly or in silence.” Midyette recently offered the Chamber’s Healthcare Committee a list of local organizations that employers and employees who may be suffering mental health and/or substance use issues can turn to for help. The list can be found at ManateeCountyFlorida. Now.Site

CONNEC COOK,
rowing up in Guerrero, Mexico, every aftern oon after school, we playe d in my grandma’s house while she was cooking. We are a huge family. I have four brothers and three sisters. It was beautiful to get all of us together. I miss that. My grandma, damazia Medrano, claims that Mexican food is made to share with the peopl e you love. 22 My grandma’s traditional Mexican kitchen is made out of clay, and she uses a wood fire to cook. Everything she cooks is fresh and locally grown. When she makes tortill as from scratch, the process takes days. First, she boils the corn. The next day, when it’s cool, she grind s the boiled corn into dough, using a traditional metate stone. There are machines to do this, but she likes the traditional way. I don’t know anyon e who makes tortillas like my grandma. She uses her bare hands , nothing else, and she makes huge tortillas! You have two, and you are full!
When I moved to Brade nton, I started cooking for my husband and friends. My friend s bring their favorite dishes too. We cook and share it all. I am an artist and own a gallery in the Village of the Arts. This recipe for “The Get Together Tacos de Asada” is one of my friends’ favor ites. There is a powerful connection between food and art, a bodysoul connection. They both bring happiness. Food feeds your body, and art feeds your soul.

PLATINUM INVESTOR
SPOTLIGHT
Brown and Sons: Family, Community, and Service Three words describe the character of Brown and Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory: family, community, and service. Started in 1975 by Chuck and Cheryl Brown, Brown and Sons has served the greater Manatee County community for three generations. As Chuck tells the story, when he wanted to start the business, only one bank was ready to give him the chance at being a small business owner. That investment paid off and Brown and Sons was honored by the Manatee Chamber with a Small Business of the Year award in 1991. 46 years after its start, son Gene Brown leads the business with wife Gina's support along with an incredible staff team. Truly a multi-generational endeavor, Gene’s son Ryan, a licensed funeral director, and daughter Rachel, a Pre-Need Specialist, have joined in the family business working along side Gene's brother David, a Funeral Director, sister Stacey, in administration, and nephew Tyler, who serves as an attendant. It isn’t a business for everyone. It takes a lot of heartfelt compassion, sensitivity, and understanding - every day. In deciding to join his father in the business, Gene said “I saw everything my dad did for us and certain things shape your life when someone does something extraordinary to help you. I knew early on that I wanted to help people.” The family’s priority on community service and involvement is part of their DNA. Gene was elected Mayor of the City of Bradenton in 2020 after serving three terms on the City Council. He is active with the Manatee High Football Booster Club and the Boys & Girls Club. He learned from his father what it means to give to others and how an adult can change the life of a child. The team at Brown & Sons lives by a guiding rule expressed best by one of Gene’s college professors, who served in an Army mortuary during the Vietnam War. "He told me that if you ever get used to it, that if the day comes where the business doesn't bother you, that is the day you need to get out of it," he said. "If you are helping people, yes, you have a job to do, but you must have that sympathy and empathy to help families and friends through extremely tough times." It isn’t easy. During one of the opioid epidemic’s peaks in 2016, a young man had overdosed and his young daughter came into the funeral home. She looked at Gene who, along with Brown & Sons team was helping the family, and said, "This is the man taking care of daddy. I'm going to see my daddy today." The young girl hadn't fully understood yet what had happened to her father or that she was in a funeral home. "I had to slowly
back out of the room and wipe the tears from my eyes," Gene said. "Moments like that get to you. But if we can help one child, one family, then it's all worth it," he said. Brown and Sons serves our community from two convenient, fully remodeled locations and has an on-site crematory at the 43rd Street location. During the pandemic, they have added technology to enable Facebook Live viewings of visitation and funeral services, which has been incredibly meaningful to relatives and friends across the world of the families the funeral home serves. Brown and Sons provides a wide range of services to meet the needs of the families they are privileged to serve: Pre-Planning Burials • Local Burials - at any cemetery • Out-of-town Burials • Direct Burials • Graveside Services Cremations • Traditional Cremation - church or chapel • Memorial Service - church or chapel • Direct Cremation

Welcome to the Chamber Team Deb Cooney Deb has joined our team as our Member Services Coordinator. “I’m a firm believer in the power of networking within a Chamber," says Deb. "I look forward to meeting all of the members and helping them to get the most benefit that they can from their membership." After living in the area for many years, Deb moved out of state to care for her parents. Her love of the area drew her back. She has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Old Dominion University and extensive experience with tourism destination marketing. business after hours It was our pleasure to host the September 14th Manatee Chamber After Hours! Conley Buick GMC Subaru is a 3rd generation family-owned business and is proud to be a part of the fabric of this community. For the Conley family, it’s more than car buying. Our business is built on building relationships, community contribution and impacting lives. As this letter is being written, the Conley dealerships – Buick GMC & Subaru – are in a fierce battle to sell the most vehicles during the month of October. Why, you ask? Is it to capture the vast profits from car sales we are all hearing about in the media? Of course it’s not; not at Conley. The two teams are in friendly but competitive competition to capture bragging rights. You see, each October, Conley donates $100 per car sold during the month of October to Moffitt Cancer Center for Breast Cancer Awareness. The money raised, along with proceeds from a charity golf tournament Conley co-hosts each year, have allowed the Conley family to contribute – as of 2021 – over one million dollars. We are so very proud to contribute to a cause that impacts so many families in and around Bradenton. If you did not have the opportunity to join us for this event and learn a little more about us, stop by Conley Subaru or Conley Buick GMC and see for yourself how WE treat YOU like family. Come see us at Conley Buick GMC Subaru where our customers receive the Conley Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty with their vehicle purchase and 10 years of Roadside Assistance! coffee club The Tidewell Foundation is so very grateful for your sharing in the opening of this Tidewell Family Grief Center in Ellenton on September 30th. We enjoyed hosting the Manatee Chamber members and hope everyone enjoyed the tour and overview of the free grief programs offered by Tidewell Hospice. We are excited about being able to serve this community to an even greater extent through our grief support to adults, children, and families. At Tidewell, we are deeply invested in the well-being of this community and this Center provides us yet another opportunity to support people in their most difficult of days. Thanks to the support of generous donors, all of the grief services we provide to our four-county region are completely free of charge. We’d love to explore how your organization can sponsor or partner with us to care for our community. To learn more, go to TidewellFoundation.org or call us at 941-552-7546. business after hours What a great crowd showed up when Turning Points hosted the Chamber Business After Hours! The Board, staff and volunteers who work so hard providing services to people in crisis in our community proudly showed off the facility where miracles happen every day. Clients of the Day Resource Center benefited from donations of jeans, socks and underwear brought in by generous Chamber members. A mini-tour of Turning Points provided highlights of their amazing rent and utility assistance programs, veteran’s program, and the free medical and dental clinic. It was obvious to all how easy it can be to make a huge difference in our community through financial support and volunteering at non-profits like Turning Points! If you would like more information about how you can make a difference for people in need in our community, or if you would like a more comprehensive tour of Turning Points, please call Margi Dawson at 941-747-1509. You can also invite friends and colleagues to join a tour virtually through an Empower Hour. Go to the events page for more info - TPManatee.org/events. We look forward to hearing from you!
