A Partner for Your Business and Our Community The End of 2020 Presents Opportunity to Reflect and Look Ahead

As we prepare to bid an emphatic farewell to 2020 it is worth exploring how much we have accomplished together. Thanks to the investment of our members, the Manatee Chamber served local businesses and our community in new and meaningful ways while effectively delivering on long-standing member benefits, too. Like you and your organization, the Chamber is preparing for 2021 with determination and flexibility. I continue to be inspired by the resiliency and tenacity of our members. The strength of our Chamber and our community continues to be the meaningful engagement of business leaders and partnership of non-profits, governmental agencies, and stakeholders in our mission. We have capitalized on relationships and collaborations that have been fostered for decades - and even longer given the Manatee Chamber's 130+ year history. Trust, patience, commitment, steadiness, influence - all of this and more helps us navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities. In the coming year we stand ready to serve you through the power of our mission and the passion of the thousands of people involved with our Chamber. I hope that you will consider engaging in news ways - join a committee, attend an event, do business with a fellow Chamber member. Reach out to me and share your ideas on how the Chamber can deliver even more value for your investment. Numbers cannot tell the story of 2020, but there are several metrics that point to our ability to connect, advocate, and support our members. We have a lot to celebrate! public policy Important Committee Work Continues This year has been a year of adaptation, change, and rethinking how we work, how we shop, how we network, and even how we obtain an education. There are not many facets of our professional or personal lives that have not been impacted in some way by evolving health and safety guidelines and the changing landscape of an ongoing pandemic. At the Manatee Chamber, public policy committees moved from in-person meetings to a virtual format without skipping a beat. Although many of us will remember this move to virtual by the endless reminders that “you’re on mute” and “please type your questions in the Q&A function”, it is important to also remember that our members continued to talk about critical and consequential topics impacting our business community and our quality of life. Chamber committees on transportation, natural resources, downtown redevelopment, healthcare, education and workforce and legislative issues held more than 35 meetings during this time to discuss existing, ongoing issues while working through the impact of COVID on areas like transportation funding, disaster resources, small business resiliency, and our healthcare programs and priorities. Committee members provided expertise, resources and experience to ensure our focus on issues impacting the business community. Members remained focused on and dedicated to community issues and ways to support other businesses while dealing with the very real impact of COVID on their own business. For instance, the Small Business Council continued to meet on a monthly basis to determine how to best serve and support the small business community during uncertain and unpredictable times through education, recognition and advocacy. Together, with the Technology Committee, 23 seminars and webinars were produced to provide area businesses with information on federal business relief, social media marketing, employment law, mental health in the workplace along with other timely and relevant resources. As we move into 2021, the Manatee Chamber will continue our mission to build a positive business environment while enhancing our community’s quality of life. This next year will continue to challenge us in new ways, but it will also bring opportunity. Many new avenues and partnerships, perhaps not imagined a year ago, have been forged to continue to focus on priorities and issues impacting the business community. We will continue to collaborate and forge ahead on work underway with existing partners while we welcome new partners including a new mayor and new council members in the City of Bradenton and our area beaches, new commissioners in Manatee County, new legislative delegation members, and new school board members.

The More You Know Funding Assistance Webinar Available

The Manatee Chamber recently held a webinar on best practices for businesses in receipt of federal business relief. Topics included how, and when, to apply for PPP Forgiveness, documentation requirements for payroll and expenses, and accounting practices for federal relief funds. This webinar is recorded and available at the Manatee Chamber’s Library of Recorded Webinars.

Manatee County Infrastructure Tax Updates

In 2016, Manatee voters approved a half-cent sales tax for infrastructure investments. These funds are dedicated to be used for major road updates, public safety, law enforcement, parks and preserves. Manatee County has a dedicated website containing featured projects, budget documents and an interactive map and dashboard. Residents can easily track projects in close proximity to businesses or neighborhoods and review project schedules along with costs and funding sources. This site also contains meeting and reporting information on the Citizens Oversight Committee for Infrastructure Sales Tax Advisory Board which was established to provide ongoing, regular citizen review of the expenditures from this funding. For more information click below:

Government Meetings and Agendas

All of our local governments post council, commission, and board meeting dates and times along with agendas and other supporting documentation online. These listings can provide valuable, accessible information on topics and issues that are important to you and your business. Meetings are open to the public, but also note that many of these meetings can be viewed via live stream or recorded video. REACH Manatee:

Connecting Employees to Education Funding The Manatee Chamber ihas stepped into the backbone organization role for REACH Manatee, a local collaborative focused on increasing high-quality credential or degree attainment for area residents. This creates an opportunity for our members to play a variety of important roles in ensuring this community vision is achieved. One example is helping our businesses' employees tap financial aid dollars for their children’s education, as well as for their own.

and receive individualized support as they complete and submit the online FAFSA form. The next workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Participants can enter the workshops, hosted by local nonprofit UnidosNow, using this link: ly.unidosnow.org/2020FAFSA which uses a Zoom platform but does not require an account and registration is not required. Additional workshops will be available in early 2021. To learn more, visit FAFSA.gov or ReachManatee.com/Upcoming-Events.

According to state agencies, each year Manatee County high school students leave millions of dollars on the table by not completing the federal financial aid form known as the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This application connects students to Pell Grants that offer up to $6,300/year in college support. These are grants, not loans and can be applied to 1-year technical & trade programs, as well as 2-year and 4-year college degrees. Please help get the word out to your employees with high schoolers that it is essential that they complete this form during their senior year.

Employees interested in pursuing education for themselves can complete the FAFSA and access Pell grants. A common myth is that these grants are only for recent high school graduates. In fact, all adults are eligible for this secondary education funding. If you have employees considering enhancing their workforce skills or earning a degree, encourage them to visit fafsa.gov or meet with the financial aid officer at their college of interest. Another great resource is CareerSource Suncoast, which offers a variety of workforce training funds for both workers and for employers: CareerSourceSuncoast.com

REACH Manatee partners are currently offering free one-on-one FAFSA assistance via virtual help sessions with college financial aid officers and trained volunteers from the community. High school seniors and their parents can get their questions answered

To learn more about REACH Manatee and how your organization can play a role in this important initiative, please contact Deborah Chapman at DChapman@ReachManatee.com or visit ReachManatee.com.

A Winter Wonderland Cover Behind the Scenes

Our 2020 Chairman of the Board, Ernie Withers, got into the spirit of the holidays during our photoshoot with Chamber member Sylwia Ok Photography. Ernie embraced the role of "cover model," just one of his many duties as Chairman of the Board. Ernie entered the winter wonderland of Sylwia's beautiful photography studio and was a natural in front of the camera. 2020 has certainly seen its fair share of challenges. Ernie has helped the Chamber navigate through a pandemic, and he, along with the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Chamber President|CEO Jacki Dezelski, and the entire Chamber staff team, is charting the future for the next chapter of the Manatee Chamber. Thank you, Ernie, for your service to our business community as Chairman of the Chamber and happy holidays to all!

Give the Gift of Local

The Chamber Is a Champion of Local Businesses and Encourages You to Be One, Too!

J o in a Chamber C o m m it te e SPOTLIGHT: Small Business Council CHAIR: Justin Phillips, Minuteman Press of Bradenton WHEN IT MEETS: First Friday of the month at 8 AM OVERVIEW: The Chamber offers a wide variety of programs designed to enhance the profitability of small businesses. The Small Business Council serves in an advisory role on program development, including seminars and webinars and the Small Business of the Year Awards. Committee members focus on supporting small businesses through learning opportunities, networking, recognition, and support. WHO SHOULD JOIN: Members interested in working to support and grow small businesses CONTACT INFO: Kim Dalglish | KimD@ManateeChamber.com 941-748-4842, ext. 121

Small business owners live and work in our community. They are our families, our neighbors, and our friends. These businesses create jobs, support our nonprofits, sponsor little league teams, run for office, and work to build the fabric of our community. Although we celebrate Small Business Saturday every year in November, the reality is that these small businesses need our support the other 364 days of the year. This is particularly true now as COVID continues to profoundly impact small business. According to a recent report by McKinsey & Company, almost a third of the small businesses surveyed “were operating at a loss or breaking even prior to the crisis.” Adapting to the existing crisis and looking to the future, many businesses will have to make significant changes in how they operate to continue to stay open through changing health and safety guidelines and customer expectations. Most of these changes and needed investments come at a time when these businesses have less access to working capital and decreased revenue streams.

"Small business isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s for the brave, the patient, and the persistent. It’s for the overcomer.” — Anonymous As we move through the end of holiday season and turn toward the new year, keep these small businesses in mind for your ongoing personal and professional needs. While innovations in technology and creative financial solutions are a part of the formula to survival, our participation as consumers of goods and services is an essential component. Those same small businesses that were quick to sponsor baseball or donate a prize now need us to remember them when we buy a holiday gift, grab some coffee or order takeout. As consumer shopping behaviors have changed, many local businesses have modified traditional business models to offer curbside service, delivery or online shopping. Owners have worked hard to reinforce consumer confidence in their ability to provide the goods and services in a safe and healthy environment. As always, if you need recommendations, please contact the Manatee Chamber to make that connection.

"Serving on the Small Business Council allows me to actively support our community’s small businesses while learning new things, building lasting relationships and advocating for business related issues on a regular basis." -Justin Phillips Minuteman Press of Bradenton

Federal CARES Act Grant Dollars Continue to Flow Into Our Local Economy The Chamber Has Served in a Navigator Role to Help Businesses, Non-Profits, and Individuals in Partnership with Manatee County Government

Through three rounds of applications for grants designed to help businesses recover from documented losses related to COVID-19 and the Governor's Safer at Home orders, Manatee County Government has received more than 1,500 applications from businesses. 896 applications were submitted for the small businesses grants in Round 3 alone. As the County team works overtime to review each one, the Manatee Chamber is assisting by serving as a "navigator". Since September 24, we have logged more than 1,200 phones calls with applicants and potential applicants for the small business, non-profit, and housing assistance grants. With so many partners working together, as much as $70 million will flow into our local economy through this Federal relief program. In addition to the business assistance, grant funds are supporting important programs and resources through area non-profits. To highlight just one area of impact, there have been critical food distribution programs funded including Mayor’s Feed the Hungry, Feeding Tampa Bay, Meals on Wheels, and numerous faith-based food pantries. Have a question about the grant programs? Call 941-745-6271.

Vice President, Public Policy & Workforce Partnerships How Long Have You Worked at the Chamber?

Nine months. I began working here in February, a month ahead of COVID, so it has definitely been a different kind of first year experience.

Early Bird or Night Owl? Early Bird. Favorite Chamber Event or Program:

Politics and Pints and the annual legislative trip to Tallahassee and/or D.C.

Most Used Phone App: Stitcher. What is Your Favorite Quote?

Is your website

MOBILE FRIENDLY?

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” -Theodore Roosevelt

Favorite Manatee County Spot: I can’t pick just one! Robinson Preserve, Emerson Point, Little Manatee River State Park - and of course the beaches.

Dream Vacation Destination: Bali, Indonesia, or Australia. What Tugs at Your Heart?

I’m not sure if this question is asking what makes me cry or makes me laugh. I’ll go with the latter and say - I love spending time with my family (including the four-legged ones), a good live music show , the Florida Gators, and getting outdoors. And, of course, office supplies.
