Chamber Receives Grant for Small Business Development as Part of Collaborative Initiative

We are excited to share that Financial Access Federal Credit Union (FAFCU) is investing $400,000 in a collaborative initiative to strengthen community ties and help the region thrive through financial wellbeing, employment opportunities, business growth, and community support. The initiative will partner with three community institutions: CareerSource Suncoast, Manatee Chamber of Commerce, and Manatee Community Foundation to amplify the impact of the grant funds.

FAFCU's strategic alignment with the Manatee Chamber is focused on fostering economic prosperity and facilitating job creation. By enhancing what our Chamber already does really well and providing financial support to extend further into the community to reach more businesses, including small, minority-owned enterprises, these grant dollars will be used to strengthen business resources and create more opportunity for engagement.

FAFCU will collaborate with CareerSource Suncoast to provide tailored services such as financial literacy workshops and a specialized financial wellness platform, as well as access to essential tools, resources, and products crucial for success. Josh Matlock, CEO of CareerSource Suncoast, says, “This funding will not only support our apprentice programs but also alleviate financial burdens for participants, covering vital expenses like childcare, transportation, and the time to attend financial education workshops. Ultimately, it empowers our apprentices to focus on their training, fostering informed, resilient employees who are better equipped to navigate their financial futures with confidence."

Partnering with Manatee Community Foundation (MCF) enhances FAFCU's capacity to support vulnerable populations and deepen its engagement in local causes. “It’s our responsibility to invest in our local nonprofit partners who deliver services that strengthen our region,” says Veronica Thames, executive director of Manatee Community Foundation. “MCF is grateful to FAFCU and excited to work alongside our partners at the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and CareerSource Suncoast. We believe that, together, we can achieve greater gains for our community.”

An important aspect of the Chamber's work will be gathering data and engaging our Small Business Council in determining how best to expand the reach of our "World Class Connections" even deeper into the business community. We look forward to sharing more about this initiative over the coming year.

As we reach the midpoint of 2024, we are preparing for many member opportunities in Q3 and Q4. A quick review of pages 28-30 in this issue of the Current is a reminder of the power of connection with businesses new to the Chamber. We pride ourselves on being "World Class Connectors" - and focus on providing diverse resources and benefits to a diverse membership.

The Chamber's full program of work has been built by members for members. Our Board and committee leaders provide the vision, due diligence, and engagement we need to successfully provide a "World Class" membership experience. Last month we hosted twenty-three of the women and men who have served as Chairman of the Board for a morning of discussion and networking. As we shared information about what our membership is experiencing and the challenges employers are facing, the long-range perspective these leaders brought to the discussion was invaluable. At the heart of it all is a recognition and appreciation for our Chamber members. Thank you for your investment in our mission and work!

Veronica Thames, executive director of Manatee Community Foundation; Mireya Eavey, executive vice president of Financial Access Federal Credit Union; Joshua Matlock, CEO of CareerSource Suncoast; and Jacki Dezelski, president and CEO of the Manatee Chamber, unite in a collaborative initiative aimed at empowering the local community, supporting businesses, and fostering financial stability. Photo by Lori Sax.
Twenty-three past Chairmen of the Board of the Manatee Chamber recently gathered for an annual leadership breakfast at the Chamber's Bradenton office. Each year, we host this gathering to celebrate the legacy these business leaders have built and expanded over many decades thanks to the involvement and investment of our Chamber membership. It was also an opportunity to discuss important issues and priorities for the business community.

Manatee Chamber Supports

Renewal of the 1 Mill for Schools

RENEWAL

Referendum Item Will Be on the November Ballot in Manatee County

The Manatee Chamber supports efforts to strengthen and enhance our public schools and the School District of Manatee County. After careful consideration and discussion, our Board of Directors has voted to endorse the continuation of the 1 Mill to continue the significant progress that has been made. The success of students directly impacts the future success of local businesses and our economy.

HOW REFERENDUM DOLLARS WILL BE SPENT

Every dollar generated by continuing the millage stays in Manatee County, benefiting our students, teachers, classrooms, and school sites. Continuation of the 1 Mill improves student learning by:

• keeping high quality teachers in Manatee County through competitive pay to attract and retain teachers as well as school support staff and paraprofessionals

All referendum funds are spent right here in Manatee County and used to keep our public schools competitive with neighboring school districts like Sarasota, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Charlotte counties – all of whom have voter-approved additional millage

• extending the school day by 30 minutes of additional instructional time for students, which equates to an entire additional year of instruction for students in our system for their full K-12 years

• increased STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), visual and performing arts, and athletics programming

• expansion of early literacy programming

Increasing Security for Students and Schools

• increased school safety and security

• assisting public charter schools

Recruiting and Retaining Teachers and Staff

Protecting students and staff is the district’s top priority Funds will support School Guardians and School Resource Officers and help the district continue to strengthen strategies for keeping students and schools safe

The Chamber also supported the initial referendum on the 1 Mill in 2018 and the continuation of the 1 mill in 2021 after careful consideration of each proposed ballot item. Our District has made laudable progress since the adoption of the 1 Mill, including a ranking of 25th out of 67 districts in the state in 2022 (the most recent available ranking data and the highest ranking in the history of the District – notably up from 41st in 2016).

A high quality, safe, effective, and adequately funded education system is foundational to individual success, business growth, and community vibrancy.

With a national teacher shortage, school districts compete for the best-andbrightest teachers, as well as bus drivers paraprofessionals food service workers, guidance counselors and principals It is crucial for school districts to attract and retain highquality employees

Seminar: What the New Overtime Rule Means for Employers

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) released a final rule that, effective July 1, 2024, expands overtime protections under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for millions of workers by increasing the salary threshold required for an employee to qualify as an exempt bona fide executive, administrative or professional employee from federal overtime pay requirements.

In this seminar, you will learn:

• The new salary thresholds and their effective dates

• What the new 3-year automatic update means to employers

• A review of FLSA minimum wage and overtime requirements, including:

• Exempt vs. non-exempt;

• Overtime concerns; and

• Regular rate of pay, why it is important, and how to calculate it

• The requirements of Florida’s wage minimum law

• Exempt vs. non-exempt employee overtime wages

• What employers need to do to comply by July 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025

• Best practices on how to handle recordkeeping requirements

Join the Manatee Chamber and Bradenton Area Economic Development Corporation as we welcome Tommy Gregory, the seventh president of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), at our July Chamber Headliners Luncheon. Education and workforce development continue to be a priority for the business community. We look forward to hearing from President Gregory as he shares his vision for continued excellence at SCF to meet our thriving region and state's post-secondary, career, and professional development goals.

The college currently serves more than 10,000 college credit students annually across its Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and Venice campuses - with plans for a Parrish campus underway - as well as through an extensive array of online courses. More than 11,000 individuals participate in yearly professional development and personal enrichment programs. After a nationwide search and comprehensive interview process, the SCF Board of Trustees announced President Gregory’s hiring in April. He will start on campus on July 1, and the Chamber and EDC are thrilled that he will address the business community within ten days of starting his presidency.

President Gregory is a senior executive leader with 30 years of experience in various leadership positions, including contracting officer, prosecutor, instructor, course director, general counsel, law firm partner and legislator. He has a strong record of success leading teams and advising senior leaders in high-profile, high-pressure situations. His leadership skills were developed working with and for military general officers, CEOs, fighter pilots, law enforcement officers, astronauts, governors, and legislators. President Gregory is a former commercial litigation attorney in Sarasota and Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the Florida House of Representatives. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Air Force Academy and a law degree from the University of Texas. President Gregory served on active duty in the Air Force for 20 years and deployed in support of Operation Southern Watch, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Building Trust and Serving the Community for Three Generations SPOTLIGHT

There really wasn’t a defining moment, but rather it just seemed like the natural path for third generation Ryan Brown to join the family business, Brown and Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory. According to Ryan, growing up in the funeral home business was decidedly normal. What stands out to him are the values of honesty, hard work, and an unwavering dedication of service to those in times of loss, instilled in him by his parents and grandparents. While growing up he didn’t fully grasp the importance of their work, but he now understands how vital the support and guidance are that they provide. Ryan shares, “I take great pride in helping as much as I can and making it as easy as possible for those in the toughest times of their lives.”

Times have indeed changed over three generations. The biggest of those being the addition of technology to the business and the move toward Cremation as the new normal. One thing that has not changed is the belief that the best way to meet the needs of their clients is to connect with them on a personal level.

Another thing that remains the same as when Chuck and Cheryl first opened the business in 1975 is the emphasis on family. Even though she passed away in 2022, matriarch Cheryl’s presence is still felt. Her portrait hangs just outside the Chapel at the 43rd Street location and the mention of her name elicits fond memories and smiles. One of Ryan’s most treasured memories is while visiting his grandmother at Blake Medical shortly before her death. Ryan and his wife Stefanie were able to share with Cheryl their good news and excitement that they were expecting a second baby. She was thrilled. They did not yet know they were having a girl. When their daughter was born, they named her Piper Honey Brown, her middle name, an homage to Cheryl’s nickname.

business. He hopes to instill the same values for family, hard work, and dedication to service. His advice for the fourth generation is simple, “Always do your best and be ready for anything!”

Brown and Sons has two convenient locations and provides a variety of service offerings designed to meet the needs of each family including:

Interment Services

• Pre-Planning Arrangements

• Local Burials, Out-of-town Burials or Graveside Services

• Direct Burial Services

Cremations
