Autonomous Communities of Spain
We continue our series with a look at Murcia Spain is divided in 17 parts called autonomous communities. Spain has fifty smaller parts called provinces.
Murcia
The Autonomous Community of Murcia is located in the South East of Spain between Andalusia and Valencia on the Mediterranean coast. The Autonomous Community consists of a single province (region), unlike most autonomous communities, which have several provinces within the same region. Until recently Murcia has been one of the least developed regions of coastal Spain. While neighbouring Valencia and Andalucia were experiencing an explosion of mass tourism and ex-pat home buying, Murcia remained relatively untouched by this foreign fervour for all things Spanish. It was only the area around the Mar Menor, Europe’s largest salt water lagoon, which attracted the interest of developers during the early “run for the sun” property boom years. But with other coastal areas running out of development potential, investors are now turning their attention to Murcia a region which some industry experts predict will be one of Europe’s biggest growth areas over the next decade.
www.sunnynumbers.com
Murcia and tourism
Murcia may have been overlooked by the package holiday market and foreign investors in the past because the region as a whole is nowhere near as lush and green as either Valencia or Andalucia. Much of it is dry and arid, except for the huertas (family farms) which use ancient Moorish irrigation systems to produce some of the country’s finest citrus fruit and vegetables. But the region has its own special charm, not least because the coastline (so far) remains relatively unscathed by tourism and the major towns and small inland villages are still totally Spanish in character. This may all change in the not too distant future because some major developers are moving in with multi-billion dollar schemes for huge housing complexes and luxurious golf resorts. Murcia already boasts some of the best golf and tourism facilities at the exclusive La Manga Club, alongside the Mar Menor. And with the promise of several more world-class18-hole courses to come in the near future, the region is setting its sights on rivalling Andalucia as the golfing mecca of Europe.
Murcia and its history
But as Murcia looks to a lucrative future, nothing can detract from the beauty of its historic cities the capital city of Murcia, the ancient naval port of Cartagena and the lovely renaissance town of Lorca, crowned with its eye-catching 12 th century castle. All three cities are steeped in history and boast a wealth of fascinating museums, palaces, churches
Sunshine Magazine 5
Cartagena and ancient monuments. The fabulous cathedral in Murcia city is well worth a visit. You can spot it from miles away because of its 96-metre tower which houses no less than 25 bells. Construction work on the cathedral started in the mid 14th century, on the site of a Moorish mosque, and lasted for another four centuries. The city’s 18th century convent church of Santa Ana is another tourist attraction, partly because the sisters of the convent’s closed order bake cakes and sell them to the public through a revolving hatch (to avoid breaking their vow of no contact with the outside world). Other places of interest include the magnificent 19th century casino and the Salzillo Museum which houses an impressive collection of life-sized polychrome sculptures. The figures were carved by 18th century Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo and beautifully painted in bright colours (polychrome means “many colours”). The figures are carried through the streets during the city’s famous Easter processions. For those who enjoy discovering “the real Spain” away from the costas, Murcia is a delight to explore with its traditional villages where life continues much has it has done for generations. The hill town of Jumilla, at the northern end of the region, is famous for its very quaffable, full bodied red wine which has been produced in the area for centuries.
Cartagena
Very few European cities have the rich and monumental history that is possessed by Cartagena.
6 Sunshine Magazine
It was founded almost 2,300 years ago under the name of Quart Hadast. It name as we know it today is derived from its Latin Title Cartago Nova (New Carthage). As well having an abundance of culture Cartagena is also naturally blessed with a coastline that is nothing short of spectacular. One of its beaches Calblanque beach - is part of a nature reserve. The rich legacy of Cartagena stretches along the shores of its marina. It is a maritime legend and was hugely important in the War of Spanish Succession and the in the War of Independence. The Sea Wall marks the boundaries of its historic quarter. Next to this walled historic quarter is the Military Arsenal, Its walls house the only entrance gate to the city still standing. The city’s seafaring history is evident in many areas and through some of its monuments and architecture. Predominantly because of its strategic location and its natural deepwater harbour Cartagena has for many centuries been an important commercial centre and was considered to be one of the richest cities of the ancient world. It still is Spain’s primary commercial port and naval base and is renowned as the birthplace of the first modern submarine (1884) - proudly displayed on the quayside. This submarine was designed by Isaac Peral who was himself from Cartagena, the submarine, though, was in fact built in Cadiz. Cartagena has also been a significant mining area, the nearby mountains being exceptionally rich in metallic ores. The entrance to the town centre is dominated by the Palacio Consistorial or City Hall, a gem of modernist architecture. Amongst the various places

Lorca Castle of interest that are essential to visit are Catedral Vieja (the Old Cathedral) or the Cathedral of Santa Maria; whose remains stand on the steps of a Roman Theatre discovered in 1987. This structure dates from the 1st century BC and is one of the most important in Spain. Many of the pieces found on this site can be seen in the Municipal Archaeological Museum. The medieval Castillo de la Concepcion; whose ruins are surrounded by fine gardens, commands a splendid view of the city and harbor, the Byzantine Wall; which, despite its name, is also Roman, and it is the remainder of the Roman road, and the Castle of la Concepcion; a fortress of Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Castilians. The Cartagena area has some of the finest gastronomy in Spain, based mostly on fish and seafood but also including the area’s locally grown fruit and vegetables. The Murcia region is very important for agriculture and citrus fruits in particular. Some examples include la ensalada cantonal (a salad featuring salted fish), caldero (a traditional fisherman’s dish which is made by boiling rice in fish stock and adding garlic), el pulpo a la plancha, (grilled octopus) and el caldo con pelotas (meatballs in broth). After, it is essential to try an asiatico coffee, (condensed milk, cognac and cinnamon, served in a glass).
Lorca
Dominated by its ancient Thirteenth Century castle the town of Lorca is, these days, a significant commercial centre for the surrounding region.
8 Sunshine Magazine
Situated to the south-west of Murcia, Lorca is perfectly located on the A-7 (E-15) motorway and enjoys excellent rail and road communications with the main cities of southern Spain, both to the south (Granada and Almeria) and the north (Valencia and Alicante). Known as ‘The City of a Hundred Coats of Arms’, Lorca was a dangerous border town during the struggle between the Moors and Christians. The castle which overlooks the town was built by the Moors, and for many years it stood on the frontier between Muslim and Christian Spain. After the re-conquest the castle was re-named Torre Alfonsina in honour of the Castillian King Alfonso X. During the Eighteenth Century a number of Baroque churches were constructed in Lorca and these together with numerous other fine buildings make Lorca a fascinating and interesting place to visit. Amongst the finest buildings are the Ex-Collegiate Church of San Patricio which was built between 1536 and 1780 on the site of the former Church of San Jorge and it was named in honour of the people of Lorca who battled hard to defeat the Moors in 1452 Lorca was named an area of ‘Historical and Artistic Interest’ in 1964 and a visit to the town will leave visitors in no doubt as to the reason for this accolade. Lorca of course celebrates many fiestas and festivals but is particularly renowned for its ‘Holy Week’ celebrations when the streets are alive with local people dressed in elaborate costumes together with galloping horses, Roman carriages and carved religious images.

Horoscopes - April Aries
Taurus
Gemini
Your demands and needs in love continue to remain strong but may not be answered as you’d like for the time being. Matters improve and by May you’re getting exactly what you want, when you want! Remember that a lover does have your best interests at heart, but you may be sending out confusing signals. You’ll experience a surge in personal energy and confidence with the focus on money and possessions.
You continue to lay low this month but you begin to come out of your shell when others show more interest in your needs and wants. Love is tricky and could require you to make some personal sacrifices, after which you more easily and naturally attract others’ attention. It’s a strong time for personal enjoyment and rewards through friends and contacts.
After a busy month of attention to career goals and professional matters, you’re feeling more sociable. It’s a strong month for social affairs, group contacts, and friendships in general. It’s not without its complications, however, but you take pleasure in ironing out problems, particularly when it involves others’ issues! Love on the job, involving a superior, or through business could figure this month
Cancer
Leo
Virgo
Professional matters are especially important in your life this month. While complicated, towards the end of the month, great satisfaction from business affairs is likely to lift your spirits. The fruits of your labor are rewarded. In general, you have more energy to pursue your professional goals purposefully.
Some truly magical moments are likely to occur in the areas of partnering and love this month. Some of you may be meeting creative or spiritual people with whom you find much in common. The month is great for fun, creativity, entertainment, good humor, and adventure. Career matters come into strong focus, although you still manage to balance your life with rewarding extra-curricular activities.
Your connections with other people, and your dependence on them, are brought to your attention with shared finances, power plays, and other “give and take” matters in strong focus now. It’s not a month in which your personal projects, needs, and desires are easily met, or even an issue on the table. You are focusing on your close personal relationships.
Libra
Scorpio
Sagittarius
Relationships start to feel less complicated and you are more able to enjoy your social life. Your goals are clearer and you are less likely to give off confusing or mixed signals to others. There is a strong connection between love and work this month, and if social opportunities through work present themselves be sure to grab them. You could find yourself attracting more creative or spiritual sorts of people these days.
Romantic and creative excitement are in store for you but there is also a lot of work that needs to be done, and you fortunately are in the right frame of mind to take care of business. Money matters that have to do with domestic affairs, real estate, and creative projects are very strong. Your decorating sense is also high, and you are likely in the mood for a home “makeover”.
Playful activities, enjoying hobbies, getting out and about, and generally finding pleasure in life are themes this month. You are also absorbing information like a sponge, so all matters related to learning, teaching, speaking, and writing are expected to run particularly well this month. Fortunate events surrounding your home and family are likely.
Capricorn
Aquarius
Pisces
Your intuition is powerful particularly for financial and domestic matters. This is a month for setting goals and visualizing instead of taking aggressive action. Spending time, and possibly money, on the home and family is likely this month. Try not to overdo or overwork as you are prone to tiredness.
Friends and connections figure strongly and friends may even be of practical benefit in addition to spiritual. Your intuition for making money is topnotch. Enthusiasm for learning brings you rewards this month, and your mind is especially sharp. Communications are strong, and love may even come through them, or through learning environments.
You are busy thinking about, discussing, and organizing your personal finances. However, be sure to put off major financial outlays until the end of the month. Take this time to budget. There will be personal recognition, particularly on the job, and you could find yourself acting on a whim, and certainly confidence is with you now. Career opportunities are strong this year

Scuba diving - Costa Brava
The Costa Brava in Spain is one of the premier scuba diving and sailing destinations on the Mediterranean coast. The Illes Medes are a series of small islands that are popular with scuba diving enthusiasts because of the vast and varied marine life that can be seen there. This place became a protected site in the 1980’s and since then over 1000 species of animal & marine life have been found thus making it a popular scuba diving destination.
Atlantic scuba diving
Although the Atlantic Coast of Spain is one of the most popular surfing spots in Europe, scuba diving in the Atlantic Ocean from Spain is less popular with tourists and therefore less developed. Scuba diving tour operators here don’t always speak English; however, this shouldn’t stop scuba diving aficionados from experiencing the different scuba diving sites this side of Spain has to offer. Main scuba diving centres on the Atlantic side of Spain are San Sebastian and A Coruna. Be aware that the Atlantic waters are colder than

the Mediterranean and that one will probably need a full wet suit when Scuba diving here.

¨S. FACTOR¨- ¨SPAIN¨ has got Talent! Chris Cross has been running a competition at Rumours for the past month called ¨S.FACTOR¨. The competition has been running since February, with the final being held on Friday 24th April. The show is a complete success and is the most popular event around. Every week the acts are judged by a panel of 4 judges and given advice or criticism. Week by week the acts are www.sunnynumbers.com
improving and stepping up their game. There can only be one winner! 1€ per ticket is being donated to the Camposol Fiesta Fund. 13 acts originally entered the competition and each week one of the competitors has been voted off by the audience. The singing ability of each act is outstanding giving the main judges (the audience) a hard job to do. The final should be a night to remember, so don´t miss out! As usual, with Chris Cross running the show, it is fun, hilarious and a great night out! Sunshine Magazine 31
