Autonomous Communities of Spain
We continue our series with a look at Aragon and Asturias Spain is divided in 17 parts called autonomous communities.
Aragon
Located in northeastern Spain, the region comprises three provinces from north to south: Huesca, Zaragoza, and Teruel. Its capital is Zaragoza. Aragon’s northern province of Huesca borders France and is positioned in the middle of the Pyrenees. Within Spain, the region is flanked by Catalonia on the east, Valencia and Castile-La Mancha to the south, and Castile and Leon, La Rioja, and Navarre to the west. With no coastline to tempt hordes of summer sun seekers, Aragon has remained relatively untouched by tourism. Your average sun, sea and sand tourist would probably struggle to pinpoint the location of Aragon (though most Brits have some vague notion that it was once a powerful kingdom and the birthplace of King Henry VIII´s ill fated first wife). Yet this largely overlooked autonomous region of Spain is teeming with riches ranging from heart-stopping Pyrenean mountain

The walled town, 28 kilometres north west of the city of Teruel, was the only Moorish village in Spain to be handed over peacefully to the Christian armies during the centuries-long battle to oust the Arab invaders. Both Teruel and Zaragoza, the region’s capital city, boast some spectacular gems from their Moorish past. Teruel is the more outwardly inviting of the two cities and has won world recognition as the home of Spain’s finest

Asturias
Asturias is an awesomely beautiful northern region of Spain. A magical place where Western Europe’s few remaining brown bears roam in ancient territory still dotted with the footprints left by Jurassic dinosaurs 150 million years ago. Sandwiched between the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian Mountains, Asturias is one of the Iberian Peninsula’s best kept secrets. The most important cities are the provincial capital, Oviedo, the seaport and largest city Gijón and the industrial town of Avilés.
The coastline has some of the most important Jurassic dinosaur fossils and footprints in the world. Dino-devotees should make tracks for the La Griega Beach where the fascinating Jurassic Museum is built in the shape of a dinosaur footprint. An ancient trail which has drawn pilgrims to the Galician capital of Santiago de Compostela for more than 1,000 years is the famous Santiago Way which passes through Asturias and has been declared a World Heritage Site and Europe’s first “Cultural Itinerary”.
The majestic Picos de Europa (Peaks of Europe) national park attracts walkers from all over the The churches and monuments in and around world and some of its better known trails could Oviedo, the ancient capital of Asturias, are almost be called crowded in August. But the rest of the region remains relatively untouched by modern tourism and the ravages of man, both of which have combined to blight some of Spain’s other areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Oviedo
The region’s unpredictable weather is a major deterrent to the development of mass market tourism, average temperatures are generally only slightly higher than those in the south of England and rain can be expected at any time of the year. The close proximity of the Cantabrian mountains to the sea means this small region has a number of different micro climates and habitats which enable a huge diversity of flora and fauna to flourish. The towering peaks, gorges, valleys, fertile plains and coastline of Asturias are home to a variety of plant life unrivalled anywhere in Western Europe. These diverse habitats are also home to wild wolves, chamois, a unique species of fallow deer, golden eagles and a special breed of Celtic mountain pony known as the Asturcon. Traditional farming methods are still widely practised throughout Asturias and the region’s remote mountain villages safeguard a way of life which has hardly changed for centuries. The village of Bulnes, in the Picos de Europa, was only accessible by mule track until the year 2000 when its splendid isolation came to an end with the opening of a new funicular railway. Much evidence of prehistoric man’s existence in Asturias has been uncovered in numerous cave paintings and burial chambers found throughout the region. Some of these important archaeological finds date back more than 100,000 years. The caves of Tito Bustillo near the pretty fishing port of Ribadesella are a popular visitor attraction with their prehistoric depictions of deer and horses. There are beautiful, unspoilt beaches along this stretch of coastline and the town of Ribadesella is a good place to enjoy the cider bars which are so popular in Asturias.

another collective World Heritage site. The city’s crowning glory is its imposing gothic cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries. It houses many holy relics including the revered “Sudarium” which, according to legend and some scientific studies, was the cloth used to wipe and cover the face of Jesus after the crucifixion. Oviedo offers an entirely different perspective of Spanish’s things. It replaces refreshing Gazpacho with a hearty fabada, Flamenco with the Celtic bagpipe, and Jug of sangria with bottles of cider. Cider houses, or sidrerìas, are scattered all throughout Oviedo, but perhaps the easiest way to get acquainted with the drink is to go to Calle Gascona, a pedestrian road right outside of old town that is lined with sidrerìas. Although the cider tradition also exists in the Basque country, Asturians claim to be the pioneers of the drink and take particular pride in its pouring and production.
historical, the roman baths being one of the most popular. Medeival palaces within the Gijon are also very popular, the baroque Revillagigedo Palace dates back to the 18th century, and the palace is now used to show works of modern art, with successful exhibitions every year. Gijon is well known for its exhibitions and concerts. During the summer, you can enjoy the mixture of culture and party at the “Semana Negra” (Black Week), where you can choose between attractions and good food or chats and meetings with the best comics and novelists. They also have another week to celebrate their “holy boss”, Santa Begoña, on August 15th. It’s a week with lots of concerts and the “Night of Fire”, with 30 minutes of fireworks at midnight on August 14th. You can also find interesting things to do in winter, too. In November, the Gijon International Film Festival turns the city in the alternative cinema meeting point.
Gijon is one of the most important cities in Asturias and is an active industrial centre, a highly traditional port, a monumental centre and a summer resort area. “El Musel” harbour located in Cimadevilla is one of the busiest in Spain today. The beaches near Gijon are NEXT MONTH: beautiful, with golden sands and promenades. We continue our series with the Balearic and Some of the best attractions however are Canary Islands

Kenya - a land of vast contrasts A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to travel to Kenya for the “holiday of a lifetime” a safari, city and beach holiday. I had not given much thought to the areas I would be visiting, other than what animals I was going to see and what the beaches would be like. I was not prepared for the contrast between the rich and the poor.
making it free from 2008. 57% of girls and 65% of boys currently attend secondary school.
We landed in Nairobi during rush hour so had time to admire the views. I was not prepared for the sheer amount of people - in cars, buses, bikes and walking, and for the poverty we were seeing. We drove past the huge rubbish dump that houses one of the biggest slums in Nariobi. The whole area had a depressed and neglected feel to it. Of course just up the road were also the huge colonial style houses with barbed wire on top of the walls and Mercedes and Lexus cars in the driveways. The hotel was a mix of nationalities but there were educated Kenyans attending seminars and business meetings. I had to wonder if they saw the poverty and what was happening in front of their very eyes or had they just become so used to it that it failed to register.
To ensure a child can go to school whole villages will club together to send one child to secondary school, in the hope that they will be able to secure a good job and send money home to the village. Some families will stagger the education with one son attending school while the other works the land and vice versa the next year, which means that sometimes they do not finish their education until they are in their mid twenties. Only 2% go on to higher education.
In 2006, the UK government pledged a £55m grant to the Kenya Education Sector Support Programme (2005-2010)? Unfortunately this money is not getting to the people who need it the most.
The statistics regarding aids and life expectancy are frightening. Over 2.5 million adults and children are infected with HIV or AIDS in Kenya. Over 890,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic. At least 23% of children are underweight. The life expectancy for men is 43 years old and for During the visit we travelled 100´s of miles women is 46 years old. across the beautiful Kenyan countryside and I did get to see the big 5 but I could not forget the In January 2008, the political conflicts within poverty we were seeing along the way - dirty Kenya led to street riots, gang fights and children with tattered clothes, no shoes and thousands dead across the country. A school in Kibera, a slum in Nairobi, Kenya. There are many different schemes to help and one of the most effective is to sponsor a child. The money from this is used to help pay for their schooling, books, uniform and general health care. Some of the schemes are run by Church organisations, some are based in Kenya while others are agencies with headquarters outside of Kenya but with key workers inside the countries.

You only have to type “kids in Kenya” into the search box on your computer tool bar and hundreds of pages will appear. Most will be looking for sponsors for individual children and as part of the sponsorship “deal” you get to write to the child, send small gifts and receive letters and information back. Many agencies will also arrange for you to meet the child should you ever visit Kenya. I would like to believe that all these sponsor deals are legitimate and have the child´s best interests at heart, so make sure you research where the money is going before you part with any. World Vision declare that 85p in every £ goes direct to the project and it only costs 60p per day/£18 per month to make a world of difference to a child´s life. Sos Children´s Villages orphan sponsorship costs £20 per month and they use 100% of the money you donate to help the orphans in their centres. If you are a UK taxpayer and tick the Giftaid box, they use this money to pay for their administration costs. Unfortunately Kenya did have a lasting effect on me but not all for the right reasons! Following are just a few sites I found while researching this article which you may find interesting. www.sunnynumbers.com

In this hilariously funny fish-out-of-water tale, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People tracks the outrageous escapades of Sidney Young (Simon Pegg), a smalltime, bumbling, British celebrity journalist who is hired by an upscale magazine in New York City. In spectacular fashion Sidney enters high society and burns bridges with bosses, peers and superstars. The film is based on Toby Young’s memoir of the same name and also stars Kirsten Dunst, Danny Huston, Gillian Anderson, Megan Fox, Max Minghella and Jeff Bridges. Directed by Robert Weide, the film will be released by MGM Distribution Co. on October 3, 2008. After disrupting one black-tie event by allowing a wild pig to run rampant, Sidney catches the attention of Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges), editor of Sharp, and accepts a job with the magazine in New York City. Clayton warns Sidney that he’d better impress and charm everyone he can, if he wants to succeed. Instead, Sidney instantly insults and annoys fellow writer Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst). He dares to

Singapore Grand Prix Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton big winners in Singapore Grand Prix Fernando Alonso, the former double world champion, won the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix for Renault yesterday but even he was prepared to admit that the real winner, for once, was Formula One itself.
The Spaniard is spot on with that assessment; there is no doubt that the resounding success of Singapore is going to unleash the floodlights for other Asian races - Japan, China, Malaysia, plus possibly Australia. There is also talk of using the Singapore model in Europe for early and lateseason night “spectaculars”. Formula One has hit a new jackpot just when it needs it; races that look better than ever and that can be staged at times that will attract the biggest possible audiences.
The risk taken by Singapore and by Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One commercial rights holder, in staging the sport’s first night race A success it may have been for Singapore but under floodlights on a new street track paid off in the grand prix was an abject disaster for Ferrari champagne style as a packed house at the Marina as Felipe Massa, their championship contender, Bay circuit and millions around the world tuned in to watch the highlight of the season. Never before has the world’s most glamorous sport glistened and glowed, smoked and sparkled, quite like it did under 1,500 spotlights in the Far East where a race complete with smashes, slapstick pitlane comedy from Ferrari and even, dare one say it, overtaking, provided a compelling spectacle against a stunning city backdrop. “It was a great weekend for all of us,” Alonso, who took the advantage of a safety-car interruption to grab his first win since last year, said. “It was a brilliant weekend for Formula One with the first night race. We had a new challenge in front of us and we will be part of history.”

went from an excellent pole position on Saturday to finishing third-last. Not for the first time this season, this was the result of a howler for the Scuderia in the pitlane during refuelling that saw the Brazilian leave with the fuel hose attached to his car. While Kimi Raikkonen, Massa’s teammate, ended up in the concrete wall three laps from the end, Lewis Hamilton, of Great Britain, took a big stride towards his first world title, by managing to resist the temptation to take unwarranted risks and finishing third, a result which extends his lead over Massa from one to seven points with only three races left. “We came through a tough weekend and got some good points so I am very, very happy,” Hamilton said. He never looks happy when he does not win and this was no exception. “It is all about scoring points,” he added. “We came here with a one-point lead and I could see Ferrari were very competitive. I knew it would be tough to beat them and, especially after the start, I could see I was behind.” Like everyone at McLaren, Hamilton is haunted by the disastrous end-ofseason collapse last year in which he surrendered a 17-point lead to lose the title race by one point. He insisted his lead this time will not make him change his more conservative approach in the remaining races. “We are going to approach the next few races exactly the same,” he said. “We have a competitive package to compete with them but I have no doubt it will be a very tough battle.”

If McLaren had a gripe, it was once again with the stewards and what some in the paddock saw as the surprisingly long delay in announcing an investigation into an illegal pit-stop by Nico Rosberg, the Williams driver. The German finished second after being able to improve his track position considerably while awaiting the inevitable penalty. Martin Whitmarsh, the McLaren chief executive, was, however, reluctant to make an issue of it.

bit, but in a car he was really graceful. ‘Graceful’ is not a word that a lot of people associate with car racing, but there sure are guys that are more fluid and smoother than others, and he was good.”
In 1995, Newman was part of a team that raced a Ford Mustang to its GTS Class victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona sports car event, making the actor, then 70, the oldest driver to win the event.
Over the years Newman competed in various types of sports cars on the winding, bucolic road course in Salisbury. Newman often raced in the since-disbanded Trans-Am Series at Lime Rock, winning an event in the division in 1986.
The 1996 racing season was chronicled in the IMAX film Super Speedway, which Newman narrated. He was also a partner in the Atlantic Championship team Newman Wachs Racing. Newman also owned a car NASCAR Winston Cup before selling it to Penske Racing, where it now serves as the #12 car.
“I just love it, so why not keep doing it?” Newman told The Courant in 2003 at Lime Rock, where he was competing in a Trans-Am race. “It’s the greatest form of relaxation for me.”
Barber thought Newman found just that at Lime Rock. “I considered him one of those guys that fully appreciated Lime Rock instead of just taking it for granted, which a lot of people do,” Barber said. “There’s an awful strong sense of entitlement around Lime Rock. Everybody acts like it’s theirs. He didn’t “He was so passionate about racing,” Lime Rock Park do that.” owner Skip Barber said. “Not many people have had more fun going racing than him. But he was serious “He was good for Lime Rock and in turn, people didn’t about it; it wasn’t a lark. He liked to win. He thought bother him. The road racing community was good that of himself as an uncoordinated guy, a stumbler a little way when it came to him.” While Newman could be found even up until 2006 competing on the biggest stages in sports car racing, he also was a fixture at Lime Park Park in Salisbury.

22nd Film in the James Bond Series Quantum of Solace continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Casino Royale. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Persuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined. Forensic intelligence links a Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but fiesty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a woman that has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation. On a mission that leads him Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world´s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exciled General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land. In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene´s sinister plan and stop his organisation.
