Jede Stadt hat ihren speziellen Charakter. In den Straßen von Graz beispielsweise arbeitet man gern mit Sprühschablonen. Auffallend viele der Stencils vertreten politische oder menschenrechtliche Anliegen. Da zeigt sich dann, dass Graz eine Studentenstadt ist. Auch viel Graffiti-Nachwuchs gibt es, alles gleichsam Nachfahren von NEO, dem Grazer Graffiti-Urgestein, der mittlerweile in der Nähe von Zürich als Tätowierer arbeitet. Und dann ist da noch Permanent-Unit. Das in Graz wichtigste Kollektiv besteht seit Juni 2007 aus Georg Dinstl, Oliver Toman, Simon Lemmerer und Josef Wurm. Jeder bringt andere Erfahrungen mit: Dinstl war Leadsänger in einer Punkband, Toman und Lemmerer haben Informationsdesign studiert, Wurm kommt aus der Graffiti- Szene (Fnord). Die Mischung führte zunächst zu einer breiten Palette an Techniken und Haltungen: Fotografie, Malerei, Grafikdesign, Streetart, Schablonenkunst. Und dann zu einem collageartigen Stil: Gearbeitet wird wie bei einer Free-Jazz-Improvisation, ohne Script, hinter- und durcheinander, und doch ergibt sicher immer eine wiedererkennbare Mischung. Für Permanent-Unit ist Kreativität ein Prozess und nichts ist für die Ewigkeit. Ihr Arbeitsethos formulieren sie selbst wie folgt: „Am Ende des Tages ist es wichtig, etwas getan zu haben, auf das es eine Reaktion geben bzw. woraus Interaktion entstehen kann. Etwas Neues schaffen, das polarisiert, in Bewegung bringt, verschönert, irritiert oder einfach nur jemandem ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern.“ In der Öffentlichkeit tritt Permanent-Unit als Firma mit zwei Abteilungen auf, als „Grafikagentur“ und als „Werkstätte“. Every city has its very own specific character. In the streets of Graz (AT) creative people like working with spray stencils and a strikingly large number of stencils deals with/supports political or human rights issues. Thus it becomes evident that Graz is a city of students. Moreover, there are a lot of young and talented graffiti artists, all descendants of NEO, so to speak, the Graz graffiti dinosaur, who meanwhile works as a tattoo artist near Zurich (CH). And there is Permanent-Unit. This most important Grazbased collective was founded in June 2007 and consists of Georg Dinstl, Oliver Toman, Simon Lemmerer and Josef Wurm. Each member brings in different experiences: Georg Dinstl was the lead singer of a punk band, Oliver Toman and Simon Lemmerer studied Information Design, and Josef Wurm comes from the graffiti scene (Fnord). At first this mix brought about a broad spectrum of different techniques and attitudes: photography, painting, graphic design, Street Art, stencil art. Then it created a collagelike style: The workflow is similar to a free jazz improvisation, without any script, pell-mell, yet always resulting in a recognizable signature mix. For Permanent-Unit creativity is a process and nothing is meant to last forever. This is how they phrase their work ethic themselves: “In the end of the day it is essential to have done something that calls for a reaction or, which fosters interaction. To create something that polarizes, causes a stir, beautifies, irritates or simply brings a smile on our faces.” In public life Permanent-Unit acts as a company consisting of two divisions, a “graphic design agency” and a “workshop”. As a graphic design agency they work for clients such as Red Bull,
dudler und Völkl, die Produktpalette reicht von Logo-, Anzeigen-, Poster- und Flyerdesign über Illustrationen bis hin zu Zeitschriftenlayouts. Als Werkstätte hingegen bemalt und gestaltet man alles, was greifbar ist, von der Hauswand bis zum Auto, von Schuhen über die Innenräume von Bars bis hin zur Schaufensterauslage, oder man nimmt an Urban-Art-Competions wie dem „Art Clash“ in Zürich (Preisträger 2009) oder dem „Write4Gold“ teil, und organisiert das alljährliche Streetart-Festival „Ink On Your Floor“ im lokalen Kulturzentrum Forum Stadtpark. Das alles macht Permanent-Unit immer als Kollektiv. Ihr Auftreten gleicht damit fast dem einer Bande oder einer Task Force. Im Kontext von Urban Art, die vor allem von Einzelgängern geprägt ist, die meist im Dunkel der Nacht anonym agieren, mag solch eine identifizierbare „Einheit“ zunächst merkwürdig erscheinen. Tatsächlich könnte man als Vorbilder für diese Strategie sowohl auf jugendliche Straßengangs als auch auf Musikbands verweisen: Ihre Zusammensetzung kann sich ändern, ihre Lebensdauer ist meist beschränkt, doch in ihrer Durchsetzungskraft sind sie eben unnachahmlich. Eines der ersten Streetart-Kollektive der Geschichte war AVANT, eine Gruppe von fünf jungen Künstlern, die von 1980 bis 1984 die Straßen von New York mit ihren Werken regelrecht überschwemmten. Heute gibt es fast in allen größeren Städten entsprechende Gruppierungen. In Wien zum Beispiel „Die Bande“, welcher Oliver Toman und Josef Wurm neben PermanentUnit treu sind, die „Atzgerei“ und „perfekt*world“. Im Kontrast zur Autorenzentrierung des Kunstbetriebs der Galerien und Museen stehen bei solchen Zusammenschlüssen die gegenseitige Anregung, und die daraus resultierende kollektive Energie im Vordergrund, wie auch die so gewonnene Kapazität, die es erlaubt – wie bei Permanent-Unit – auf möglichst vielen interessanten Hochzeiten gleichzeitig tanzen zu können. Das ergibt immer wieder neue Arbeitsanreize und eröffnet die Möglichkeit, dem eigenen heraklesschen Motto treu zu bleiben: Gestaltet wird, was Gestaltung braucht!
Almdudler and Völkl, offering everything from logo, ad, poster and flyer design to illustrations and magazine layouts. As a workshop, by contrast, they design everything that is really “massive” and corporeal, such as house walls, cars, shoes, the interiors of bars or shop windows; or they take part in urban art competitions such as the “Art Clash” in Zürich (winner in 2009) or “Write4Gold”, organize the annual Street Arts festival “Ink On Your Floor” in the local arts centre, Forum Stadtpark. All this is always done collectively by Permanent-Unit. Hence they almost act like a gang or a task force. In the context of Urban Art, which is predominantly marked by lone wolves who act anonymously in the middle of the night, such a clearly identifiable “unit” may seem odd at first. Indeed, one might refer to street gangs or bands as models for this strategy. Their line-up may be subject to changes, their life cycle may be restricted but their powers of self-assertion cannot be topped. AVANT, a group of five young artists which between 1980 and 1984 was virtually flooding the streets of New York City with its works, was one of the first Street Art collectives in history. Today such groups can be found in almost any bigger city. For example, in Vienna, there is “Die Bande”, featuring, among others, Oliver Toman und Josef Wurm from Permanent- Unit, the “Atzgerei” and “perfekt*world”. As opposed to the author-centeredness of the institutional art sector of galleries and museums mutual inspiration and the collective energy which is produced in the creative process is what takes center stage in such coalitions, as well as the capacities opened up, which enable artists – like in the case of Permanent-Unit – to juggle as many balls as possible at once. And this time and again brings forth new incentives to work and enables them to stick to their own Herculean motto: We design whatever needs design!

Die „Street Art Passage Vienna“ wurde im September 2008 auf Initiative des quartier21 eröffnet, als Weiterführung einer bereits bestehenden Reihe von Themenpassagen im MuseumsQuartier Wien. Die Passagen sind Ausstellungsorte im öffentlichen Raum, die jeweils speziellen Kultursparten (Comic, Klangkunst u.a.) gewidmet sind. Die „Street Art Passage Vienna“ ist zudem ortsspezifisch lokalisiert: zugänglich von der Breite Gasse ist sie die Brücke vom Spittelberg – einem Zentrum der Wiener Street Art Szene – zum 60.000 m² großen Kulturareal des MuseumsQuartiers. Neben der permanenten Gestaltung der Passage durch den französischen Künstler „Invader“ lebt dieser öffentliche Raum von seinem wechselnden Ausstellungsprogramm internationaler und lokaler Street Art- und Graffiti-KünstlerInnen sowie von einer begleitenden Publikationsreihe. Das Street-Art-Magazin „betonblumen“ wird jeweils von den ausstellenden Künstlern gestaltet und kann direkt vor Ort an einem eigens integrierten Blumenautomaten erworben werden. Signierte und limitierte Künstlereditionen der Publikation werden über den Verlag Schlebrügge.Editor, im SUBOTRON Shop im quartier21 (subotron.com), in der INOPERAbLE Galerie (401rush.com) und bei THE HOT DOGS (thehotdogs.org) im 7. Bezirk vertrieben. Die Kunstwerke können einmal pro Jahr ersteigert werden.
In September 2008 the “Street Art Passage Vienna” was opened on the initiative of quartier21 as a continuation of an already existing series of thematic passageways in the Museums Quartier Wien. The passageways are exhibition venues in public space which are each dedicated to specific cultural forms of expression (comic, sound art, etc). Moreover, the “Street Art Passage Vienna” has a site-specific setting: the bridge from the Spittelberg – a center of the Vienna street art scene – to the 60,000 m2 cultural area of the MuseumsQuartier is accessible from the Breite Gasse. Beside the permanent design of the passageway by French artist “Invader” this public venue benefits from its alternating program of exhibitions of both international and local street art and graffiti artists plus an accompanying series of publications. Each issue of the street art magazine “betonblumen” (“concrete blossoms”), designed by the artist who is currently exhibiting, is availabl at an integrated floral vending machine directly on site. Signed copies of limited artists’ editions of the magazine are up for grabs at the publishing house Schlebrügge.Editor, at the SUBOTRON shop in the quartier21 (subotron.com), at the INOPERAbLE gallery (401rush.com) an at THE HOT DOGS (thehotdogs.org) in the 7th district. Once per year the works of art can be purchased by auction.
