FAMILY

Family-friendly Escapes From Hawaii to Virginia, explore the best in family-oriented travel

SPAS HAVE TRADITIONALLY served adults, but today there is an increasing trend of parents bringing children along for the adventure. Family’s spaing together has become so popular, in fact, that spas are finding creative ways to welcome the whole family to engage in activities together. And, because wellness resorts are increasing their offerings to include kids’ clubs and inclusive programs, parents are finding it easier to indulge in a little “me time” during their family vacation. Below are a few top spa resorts that offer both family activities and wellness options— just in time for summer. At one of the finest luxurious family wellness retreats, LANIWAI AT AULANI, a Disney Resort and Spa, offers spa, relaxation and spectacular Hawaiian experiences are available for ages newborn and up. The Hawaiian word laniwai (lah-nee-vai) means “freshwater heaven,” and the spa lives 12

up to its name with more than 150 treatments, including the only outdoor hydrotherapy garden on Oahu. Laniwai offers 15 treatment rooms, two of which are a couple’s room and a flex room for two-plus guests, including families. Treatments include body polish, vitality baths, massage, body treatments, facials and even outdoor choices. Signature therapies include lomilomi massage, incorporating lomilomi “pressure point” sticks and warm river stones; and kilikili, which uses exfoliation and massage with coconut oil under streaming jets of warm waters. Family massages include the Ohana for three to six persons; this style massage incorporates the healing touches of lomilomi for ages 5 and older. The Makana is a soothing therapy for parents and infants (age 1 and below); one parent enjoys a treatment while the other learns the art of baby

massage from a certified practitioner. For teens ages 13 to 17, the Painted Sky offers spa treatments, a yogurt bar, computer stations and other interactive experiences. Teens may also enjoy salon services and the Ohana family massage. If accompanied by an adult, guests ages 14 and older are welcome to relax in the main spa area, which includes Kula Wai, the outdoor hydrotherapy garden. During the Keiki Wahine experience (ages 3 and older preferred), little ones are transformed into modern hula dancers at the salon, which includes a “Minnie Me” manicure and pedicure, hair style (sprinkled with pixie dust at the end), shimmering makeup application and Keiki aloha wear. Parents and children will also enjoy the The Pulu Bar, which allows guests to create signature body polishes and scrubs by blending authentic Hawaiian fragrances, cane sugar, sea salt and oils such as macadamia, kukui and jojoba. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the resort will arrange soft-adventure sports including kayaking, white water rafting, hiking and biking around Henderson, Nevada. CULINARY

A joyous journey of discovery in Champagne By CAROLYN O’NEIL

FOR CHAMPAGNE LOVERS, a pilgrimage to Reims is akin to visiting Mecca. Reims, a center for business and home to many of the most famous Champagne producers, is the largest city in the Champagne region of France. CHAMPAGNE CENTRAL Located 90 miles northeast of Paris (an easy 30 minutes by high-speed train from Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport), Champagne’s climate, chalky soil, and history of multi-generational winemaking combine to produce the region’s uniquely elegant sparkling wine. Reims is where my odyssey to discover all things bubbly begins. Every visit should include at least a peek inside the 13th-century Cathedral 16

Notre-Dame de Reims in the heart of the city. Look for the statue of Joan of Arc on horseback facing the cathedral’s grand Gothic doorway. Then explore the city streets to see the homage to Champagne unfold. Gift shops are stocked with Champagne buckets in a myriad of designs, stacked with glasses built for bubbly and all kinds of accessories to support and celebrate the enjoyment of drinking Champagne. Wine shops and restaurants (even the casual ones) showcase impossibly long lists of the region’s lovely libation. Table linens, scarves and artwork feature area maps and scenes of vineyards and Chateaus. Gourmet food shops specialize in treats that pair beautifully with – you

guessed it – Champagne. The traditional pretty pink biscuits of Reims, made by Fossier since 1756, are a sweet surprise and best enjoyed dunked (quickly) in a glass of Champagne. Lunch at Le Café du Palais, walking distance from the cathedral, features another culinary classic of the region, which pairs beautifully with Champagne. Slightly salty jellied ham served with boiled potatoes, salad and pickles. A beautiful dinner at Veuve Clicquot’s Hotel du Marc in Reims features different Champagnes for each of the five courses. Risotto with white truffles paired with La Grande Dame 2004, pigeon with mushrooms was presented with a vintage rose

left to right The iconic bubbly adds life to a multitude of food pairings. Champagne is an elegant blend of different grapes, most notably Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay. Each Champagne house orchestrates their blending to create a unique taste and style. Chateau La Marquetterie, a Taittinger family property, is the setting for elegant multi-course lunches, each paired with Champagne.

Italy, but Champagne only comes from Champagne. “It’s a consumer protection issue,” says Thibaut le Mailloux of the Comité de Champagne. “We are basically trying to rid the world of using Champagne as a generic term, including its use to describe paint colors or in fashion.”

2004 and a glass of Veuve Clicquot’s demi sec accompanied banana macarons with passion fruit coulis for dessert. CHAMPAGNE 101 The first lessons that come to life upon arrival is the proper pronunciation of Reims (catch the “r” in the back of your throat) and the strict use of the term Champagne. What’s in a name? Just as sweet onions must come from Vidalia, Georgia, to be called Vidalia onions, you can’t call any sparkling wine Champagne—unless it’s from the Champagne region of France. There are many sparkling wines produced around the world such as Cava from Spain or Prosecco from

SO MANY HOUSES, SO MANY BUBBLES While most Americans can name at least a few top brands, including Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Piper-Heidsieck and Taittinger, there are more than 5,000 producers in Champagne; some very big and others quite small. Throughout the region there are subtle differences in the chalk and clay content of the soil, the slope of the vineyards, the sun exposure and the humidity. Add to that Mother Nature’s blessing or whim—creating either a spectacular or so-so year—not to mention the winemaker’s philosophy on blending and style, and you can understand why not all of Champagnes taste, look or even feel alike. Rose Champagne’s, for instance, are created in a spectrum of pinks. “The beauty of rose Champagne is the diversity of the range of colors from copper to pale pink,” says Bruno Paillard of Champagne Bruno Paillard (a variety served in many Michelin star restaurants). Take-home tip: When you’re choosing Champagne from a restaurant wine list or at a wine shop, make sure to take note of labels from wineries you might not recognize to discover a diversity of Champagne styles and prices. BUBBLY HEALTH BENEFITS More than just a luxury libation, Champagne also brims with some

happy health benefits. Just 78 calories in a four-ounce flute, dry or brut Champagne is actually one of the lowest calorie adult beverages you can pour. Other figure-friendly tips to avoid tipping the scales include slowing down to truly appreciate food favorites; a glass of Champagne can help with that. Plus, the bubbles in the effervescent liquid liven up the palate to enhance the pleasure of dining, so you may not only savor foods but also appreciate the nuances, textures and tastes. Mireille Guiliano, author of the best selling “French Women Don’t Get Fat” believes that many of Champagne’s health benefits are due to its trace minerals such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, and lithium (a natural mood regulator). And perhaps Champagne is one of the keys to a long and healthy life. 87-year-old Andre Drappier, of Champagne Drappier says he’s enjoyed sipping bubbly every day since he was 16. “A bottle a day keeps the doctor away,” he says with a smile. BUBBLY VOCAB Vintage Champagne is blended from the wines of a single outstanding year (read: pricier!) with the year listed on the label. Non-vintage Champagne wines are blended from grapes grown in different years to achieve a consistent and unique house style—regardless of vintage variability. Dosage is the step in making the wine where sugar is added. At the dry end of the scale is ‘Extra Brut’ (almost no sweetness added) and ‘Brut’. At the sweet end are ‘Sec’, ‘Demi-Sec’ and ‘Doux’ (which is very sweet). More than 90 percent of Champagne wines are categorized as ‘Brut’. 17

Driving in Scotland’s mountainous southern Highlands was not for the faint of heart, especially at night and during a storm. We had conquered the busy streets of Edinburgh, ventured to the medieval town of Stirling and walked the castle esplanade, and earlier that day left the Kingdom of Fife along Scotland’s east coast. But nowhere did the roads narrow, twist and tunnel beneath dense canopies of trees like it did in the Highlands. My husband gripped the right-side wheel while I prayed we would not scooch one more inch to the left, where a dark, shimmering loch nearly lapped the edge of the road’s shoulder. Ahead, our beacon, Brenda Anderson, lit the way with her SUV. A passionate Scot, culinary expert and founder of Tasting Scotland (+44 [0]141 2394907; tastingscotland. com), Brenda joined us earlier that day to show us a more intimate look at Fife and the country, and now she had insisted on escorting us to our hotel for fear we would get lost. Always seeking the road less traveled, I took it as a sign that we were finally getting somewhere. I was, after all, on a quest to find Scotland’s true bounty and those authentic places that had long been crafting, catching and producing its culinary abundance—something Brenda and other locals referred to as the “Scottish larder.” “Imagine the shelves of a huge country cupboard,” she explained over lunch at Craig Millav bcr’s (+44 [0]1333 730327; 16westend.com), a white-washed restaurant at the edge of the sea in St. Monans. That cupboard or larder would hold the foods that are grown, reared, made or landed in that country. And in Scotland, a country smaller than the state of South Carolina, this larder teems with everything from seafood and shellfish (such as langoustines, crabs, oysters and mussels), smoked salmon, Aberdeen Angus beef, Scotch lamb, grouse and venison to summer berries, rhubarb, farmhouse cheese, Dundee cake and oats. Slurping still-salty oysters and taking bites of a creamy pea mousse, I watched a boat chug into the harbor, moving slowly against the constant chop of the seas. On our first morning in Anstruther, another fishing village in Fife, I was anxious for a run. Bounding over the threshold of our bed and breakfast, The Spindrift (+44 [0]1333 310573; thespindrift.co.uk), I headed toward the North Sea and the mixed-terrain Fife Coastal Path, which runs 117 miles along the coast. The gray sea was underscored by a rocky shore and contrasted by the nearly neon greens of Anstruther Golf Club, just at my right. As compact and bountiful as Scotland itself, Fife is famous for its golf courses—some 45 in all, including St. Andrews—and fishing villages, ancient castles, beaches and pine forests. I passed a stone watchtower at the edge of a green, a World War I memorial for club members. A fisherman on the rocks gathered up lobster baskets, and my mind escaped to our dinner at Spindrift. bread from G.H. Barnett & Sons in Cellardyke, lamb from Angus, Pittenweem oatcakes and Anster cheese from St. Andrews—everything at the table showcased goods procured within arm’s reach. Owners Christine and Ken Lawson sat and talked with us about their simple approach to the menu: Be unwavering about using the best local ingredients. Across the sea I could make out Edinburgh—or was it the Isle of May?—and realized I was seeing another side of Scotland. Something a little less tame, a little more like it has always been. I kept running as the paved path narrowed into a dirt trail. In Pittenween, Brenda took us to the 14th-century Kellie Castle & Garden (0844 493 2184; nts.org.uk), an intimate estate restored in the 1870s and best known for its walled organic garden. Crossing the terrace rumored to have once been an archery lawn, where the exterior walls some 400 years old are webbed with peach, kiwi and fig trees, and walking through the garden door, it was hard to miss that we were about to enter something completely special. Inside, the 1.25-acre garden was a virtual work of art. Maintained by the National Trust for Scotland in late Victorian style, everything grew together but in organized rows. We walked past 25 varieties of rhubarb (including Hawkes champagne), alpine strawberries, edible white roses, apple and pear trees, peas and beans, artichokes, kale (a staple in Scotch broth soup) and even original heritage leaves such as Good King Henry. In the corner, an original summerhouse had been turned into a shop for the garden’s harvest. We continued north up the coast toward St. Andrews, stopping at Balgove Larder (+44 1334 898145; balgove. com), a unique combination of a farmhouse, butchery and café, where we bought soaps and jams. Moments later in St. Andrews, the town was abuzz with students from Scotland’s oldest university and golfers across the historic course. We walked West Sands beach, wide and dotted with seashells, and, like tourists, ran and took photos while humming “Chariots of Fire.” It felt like the dead of night when we at last reached Perthshire and the old farmhouse-turned-boutique hotel, Monachyle Mhor (+44 (0) 1877 384 622; mhor.net). Exhausted and cold, all was made right by our mod, cozy room with wide-plank floors, a fireplace and steam room. At chef Tom Lewis’s restaurant at the family-run hotel, we collapsed into a velvet booth and indulged in a warm dram of whiskey and some outrageously tender Highland beef. By morning, the storm had passed and the view from our window was incredible: green fields rolling uphill into a forest, fluffy sheep out to pasture, snow-capped mountains against a bluebird sky, the woody banks of Loch Voil. We set out for a hike on another narrow path, this one zigzagging downhill, around a bend and out of sight.

FINDING

BALANCE GEORGE HINCAPIE’S LATEST VENTURE, HOTEL DOMESTIQUE, FOCUSES ON HEALTH AND FITNESS By VIRGINIA BROWN

PHOTOS COURTESY OF HOTEL DOMESTIQUE

In the valley of the South Carolina Smokies, just north of Greenville, you will find a quiet terrace. Its path is filled with pebbles, Italian cypress trees and a view that would bring peace to any day. You’ll be among the charming hills of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, but you might as well be in Italy or France. Inspired by the elegance of Europe with modern touches, Hotel Domestique—the latest venture by world-renowned cyclist George Hincapie—is located atop a hill that affords soothing South Carolina mountain views. Upon entering the foyer, guests are greeted by general manager Richard Jardin and several wine options. Join other travelers as you mingle in the two-story entryway, complete with a sitting area and cracking fireplace. Distressed hardwood floors, exposed wooden columns and stone walls round out the feel of the room, while a cozy library, just off the foyer, beckons with luxurious chairs and a bookcase designed in the shape of a tome. Balance is at the core of this hotel experience, which opened last fall. French for “helpers,” domestiques are essential support riders on Tour de France teams, and Hincapie is one of the best. European elegance and top-notch cuisine meet glute-crushing hills in the mountain getaway chosen specifically for its likeness to the mountains of France and Italy and mild year-round climate. A number of top riders make this region their home, including the Hincapie Racing Team, located in nearby Greenville. The hotel’s active Cycling Program includes daily rides for

all ages and skill levels. Seek out advice for the best routes to go it alone, or check in with the on-site bicycle shop that provides travelers with recreational bikes and offers repairs; group rides will appeal to those interested in companionship. After all that cardio, you’ll deserve a culinary treat—and that’s just what Chef Adam Cooke delivers. Recently named one of America’s 40 Best Chefs Under 40, his subtle yet inventive twists on familiar dishes are worth the visit alone. Restaurant 17, named for the number of times Hincapie participated in the Tour de France and also accessible to those not staying on-site, features dishes such as trout with roasted cauliflower, radishes, capers, salsa verde, and a brown butter crumble. Sourcing locally with a focus on the region’s agriculture lends to Restaurant 17’s creative, refined menu. The restaurant boasts indoor and terrace seating. Each of the hotel’s rooms is subtly decorated with a wrought-iron bed, French doors, a flatscreen TV, artwork and draperies in Hincapie’s signature orange. Luxurious baths come stocked with Hermès toiletries and feature riverrock showers; a convenient iPad concierge satisfies specific requests. (864) 516-1715; hoteldomestique.com 45

TOP SUITES

High-style Explore this suite new concept in Dallas IN UPTOWN DALLAS, you’ll find a collection of “mini homes” which exude the vibe of New Orleans, the Hamptons and Seaside, Florida. These luxury one- and two-bedroom suites, The Bungalows, were recently opened by Hotel Zaza. Boasting the comforts of a luxury residential home, Bungalow 8 is the largest at 1,200 square feet and features two plush bedrooms, twoand-a-half bathrooms and a full marble kitchen. A dramatic stairway, brick walls, hardwood floors, and an impeccably furnished dining area round out the room’s refined atmosphere. Situated in the center of the bustling Uptown neighborhood, its quiet, tree-lined location, private parking and an old, Southern-inspired front porch make Bungalow 8 feel more like a gracious private residence. Two 48

stories high, the townhouse-style suite features brick, hardwood and Carrera marble accents throughout; it also includes a spacious living room, full kitchen (with a refrigerator stocked with all the comforts of home, including guest favorite Veuve Cliquot), dining area, guest bath, and two bedrooms with private baths. The mini-home concept also comes with hotel-like perks. A partnership with Dallas’s Platinum Motorcars allows bungalow guests to opt for a chauffeured or personal use of a Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, or Ferrari. (Need we say more?) Other amenities include a butler’s pantry stocked with fresh coffee, yogurts, fruits and juices each morning, and beverages and snacks throughout the day. Three 47-inch flat-screen TV’s are located throughout; kitchen

amenities include Illy espresso machine, Jawbone–Bluetooth audio controls and iHome controls. Design inspiration for The Bungalows came from Hotel ZaZa Developer Charles S. Givens, who employed a hands-on approach to creating the new suites in tandem with local interior design firm Duncan Miller Ullmann. Much of the furniture and artwork was thoughtfully hand-picked from local boutiques throughout Texas. The convenient location of The Bungalows to the hotel allows easy access to its signature amenities including the lively pool, the ZaSpa wellness retreat, and ZaZa’s acclaimed restaurant, Dragonfly. Hotel ZaZa has a fitness center, with personal fitness performance training sessions with a certified fitness specialist upon request. (800) 597-8399; hotelzaza.com
