Discover Georgia’s Blue Ridge Experience.

Exploring Antiquing Biking

Surround yourself with beauty, relaxation and natural fun in Georgia’s Blue Ridge, only 90 miles north of Atlanta but a million miles away from the traffic, stress and anxiety of the city. With 106,000 acres of national forest, Blue Ridge is the antidote for what ails you. Rent a cozy cabin or a luxury mountain home overlooking peaceful ridges and valleys, or beside a rushing stream or the crystal clear Toccoa River. You may never want to leave the cabin, but you should take the time to explore the authentic mountain towns of Blue Ridge and McCaysville and shop in surprisingly upscale specialty shops and galleries that line Blue Ridge’s Main Street. Treat yourself to a massage at a local day spa or in your cabin. At the end of the day, chill out by the fireplace or enjoy a fabulous dinner at one of our wonderful restaurants; the choices of dining spots are simply amazing. Your experience in Georgia’s Blue Ridge will bring you back again and again and some day (like us) you might just decide to stay.

“Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” - MARGARET LEE RUNBECK

L

aunching a new magazine has been, by far, my most rewarding professional experience, and I am thrilled to share with you the second issue of Healthy Travel. The staff and I are grateful and humbled by the buzz for our new magazine; I sincerely appreciate all of the handwritten notes and emails from new fans and readers. Getting to live my passions—travel, health, fitness and wellness—and call it “work” is the ultimate gift. In this summer issue, we’ve compiled a few amazing warm-weather getaways, including Chicago, Scrub Island, Sonoma and our favorite off-season ski resorts in Canada. Each destination offers health-focused travel at its best. If you need a little romance, make plans to visit Dos Brisas, a luxury ranch in Texas, where you’ll indulge in spa treatments and haute cuisine. We’ve also showcased top farmers markets, summer glam style and beauty must-haves for the beach bag.

Summer truly is my favorite time of year, and I’m fortunate that my three children are a little older (16, 14 and 12), so our travel experiences are becoming more adventurous (and easier!). Family vacations have evolved, and resorts now are filled with creative outdoor healthminded activities for all ages; we’re confident you’ll find the right trip for your family in this issue—a vacation that will provide a lifetime of memories and laughter. Please continue to send us your thoughts, comments and questions via social media (Twitter: @alisonlewis and Facebook: facebook. com/healthytravmag), email and snail mail, and send along your favorite healthy travel finds, too. Thank you for reading, and cheers to an adventurous summer!

Why A Destination Race? “Training and running in and around the same places can get old,” says runner Sean McCrary of Dallas, Tx., “Planning a destination marathon allows you the opportunity to experience a new place and new people who all share something in common.” For Anna Belyaev of Western Springs, Ill., it's more about the magic of the run. “You are instantly transformed from tourist to a runner who is part of the local and universal pack. And, you don’t miss anything,” shares Belyaev, “the taste of the air, the way the light transforms the view, the sounds of the city winding up or down.” Sunni Thompson of Atlanta, Ga., adds, “It’s also a great reason to visit every amazing local restaurant without feeling guilty about what you’re eating."

VISITING Scrub Island is

like going back in time. Located on a previously uninhabited swath of land in the British Virgin Islands, it’s the ultimate privateisland retreat. The island is so remote and pristine, in fact, you’ll never so much as feel the compulsion to whip out your phone, tablet, or lap top between sips of rum punch and Caribbean sunsets. Though the island may feel like a world away, getting there is as hassle-free as the resort itself; hop on a flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, catch a short connection to Tortola, then board the resort’s private yacht for the 10-minute sail to Scrub Island. Just three years old, Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina boasts fifty-two guest rooms and a handful of villas, not to mention world-class dining and spa services. Still need convincing? Here are our top reasons to disconnect on Scrub Island.

BREATHTAKING BEAUTY. Prepare to be stunned by the postcard vistas of Scrub Island. Icy blue water laps at the soft sand beaches as you gaze at the horizon, where the sea meets green-top mountains that seem to sprout from the ocean floor. Lush tropical foliage forms a frame for the photos you’ll be snapping between naps in a palm-shaded hammock or private nook at the beach.

views during your treatments at Ixora Spa. For the daring or young at heart, Pavilion Beach features a water trampoline. Poolside at Scrub Island’s Marina and Pavilion Beach. More breathtaking views of Pavilion Beach.

SWEET SUITES. Generous-sized rooms and villas, filled with warm, rich woods and bold Caribbean color, will encourage lazy mornings. Spacious outdoor terraces, King-size beds, Egyptian combed cotton sheets and down bedding, and L’Occitane bath products are but a few of the lavish amenities found here. You may be tempted to stay inside all day if not for the views outside your window.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES. There are three private ones at Scrub Island, each offering something different. Beach-hop until you find a favorite, but North Beach, which features 1,000 feet of shoreline, chaise lounges, a sparkling pool and the One Show Beach Bar, is often the first stop for guests. Beside the marina is Pavilion Beach, perfect for relaxing near the multilevel main pool, Jacuzzi and restaurants. Water activities and snorkeling are plentiful here, or simply drag your lounge chair into the water to stay cool while you daydream. Before kayaking over to the couples-friendly Honeymoon Beach for a superprivate afternoon, pick up a picnic lunch from the on-property gourmet market.

INCREDIBLE SPA TREATMENTS. Lots of places promise relaxation, but Scrub Island is the zenith of chilled-out bliss. The Ixora Spa, set on a hill that looks over the clear Caribbean Sea, features a full-service menu of treatments, an infinity pool and a relaxation deck. The Eterno Massage is a must-book, incorporating deep-tissue pressure with heat and lavender oil. Full- and half-day packages are available, too. Ahhhmazing.

IMPECCABLE SERVICE. From the moment you step off the ferry on to Scrub Island, the gracious and friendly staff will cater to your every whim, providing complimentary rum punch upon arrival, a private launch to Trellis Bay and concierge service. Whatever your needs, the people at Scrub Island will take care of it.

A stunning evening view of Scrub Island. The kid's pool provides entertainment for the young. Beachside activities like yoga help adults reach a state of zen. Explore the underworld with Dive BVI. Gourmet beachside appetizers at One Shoe Bar.

FINE WINING AND DINING. With more than 20 years of experience as a chef and restaurateur, Italy-raised Davide Pugliese now serves his fresh, inventive recipes to lucky resort guests. Some favorite offerings: homemade muesli, watermelon carpaccio with fresh beets, and grilled salmon with a guava glaze and sweet potato mash. The main restaurant, Caravela, serves traditional dishes made with fresh island ingredients. Tierra! Tierra! cooks up appetizers, salads and sandwiches with American and Caribbean flair. Try the Jamaican jerk salad with homemade avocado dressing or a mango-papaya salad with grilled shrimp and drizzled with tropical vinaigrette. Order drinks to enjoy poolside; we’re fans of the ting (a Jamaican carbonated grapefruit beverage) and dark rum. On a night when you really want to indulge, opt for a private dinner for two served anywhere at the resort.

AWESOME WATER SPORTS. Check out Dive BVI, located in Marina Village, to find an adventure that suits you. Exotic marine life is plentiful here, so don a mask and snorkel the surrounding bays, coves and reefs to spot yellow frogfish or experience the best scuba around. Also available: sailing lessons for kids and island-hopping excursions. Charter a boat for a deep-sea fishing trip, or board a catamaran for a Champagne sunset cruise. If you want to stay closer inland, try the beachside water trampoline, kayak the shallow beach waters or paddle board for an afternoon.

THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. As perfect for a romantic vacation for two as it is forfor a fun-filled family getaway, Scrub Island offers the best of both worlds, whether you choose to plug out or plug in, adventure or relaxation, multicourse dinners or beachside burgers. And despite being located in the middle of an isolated slice of paradise, its calendar of events includes music festivals, regattas, winepairing dinners and steel-drum music dance parties. The only question we have is, why aren’t you packed yet?

CANADA is known for winter sports, but during the off-season, ski resorts remain a hub for outdoor adventures and spectacular scenery. Summertime is when the snowy white faces of mountains turn green; the back bowls become mountain biking and hiking trails; and gondolas transport hikers instead of skiers. Bonus: you can leave behind your parka. Whether you're zip-lining, hitting scenic paved trails or taking advantage of an extra-long ski season, Canada’s off-season offerings are as fantastic as they are fun. And they’re all easy trips from major cities (also worth a visit in their own right).

Whistler Blackcomb WHISTLER BLACKCOMB , near Vancouver, British

Columbia, is perfect for adventure-seekers, offering everything from low-key golfing to mountain biking, zip-lining and glacier skiing. It’s also home to some of the finest restaurants and spas in North America. “Whistler Blackcomb's terrain is just as awe-inspiring in the summer as it is in the winter,” says Michelle Leroux, the resort's public

Whistler boasts about 25 miles of paved scenic trails, as well as MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK , the No. 1 lift-accessed downhill bike park in the world, featuring nearly 5,000 vertical feet of trails and a wide range of wilderness trails. Home2 Suites’ Inspired Table offers fresh fruits, yogurts, hot and cold beverages and a three-cereal dispenser labeled “Healthy,” “Healthier” and “Healthiest.” The communal table is equipped with digital docking stations for a place to surf the Net before setting out to explore Charleston.
